Tibia is an international retro MMORPG from 1997 that has gone through constant refinement; it is still updated and played to this day. It has a massive universe that's largely ignored by most players, probably due to the language barrier. The classic, charming 2D graphics and top down view gives this game its distinctive retro feel and sets it apart in today's 3D MMORPG universe. It's a hard game, even though gameplay has gotten more convenient in these last years. Slow and immersive; exponentially better with friends. There's just so much to do and to explore. The dangers are real, and so is the fear of death: the penalty for dying is pretty heavy. This builds a bond between you and your character and makes for some intense gameplay.

There are many game servers, referred to as worlds, that are the same game for the most part but with a completely separate player base. They can differ in the PvP setting; there are Optional PvP worlds where you can only kill other players through formal war, Open PvP worlds where you can kill other players but are limited by the skull system, and Hardcore PvP worlds where there are no limits placed upon PvP and you are allowed to kill anyone and as much as possible. There are also preview worlds and pirate (Open Tibia; OT) servers available. Preview worlds feature doubled experience gain and skill rates and are used to test game design changes and new features before they are released on other servers. Pirate servers are run not by Cipsoft but by players and may feature custom maps and items, experience multipliers, all-new quests, all sorts of nifty stuff.

Windows and Linux are supported. A Flash game client is also available; to play using that client, log into your account and press the Play button next to the character you want to play as.

New players start on a starter island called Rookgaard. There is a tutorial quest which teaches you about the basics of the game, including combat, the use of the shovel and rope, equipment and even what happens when you die. There, you hunt monsters until you reach level 8; at that point, you should choose your vocation and travel to mainland Tibia.

In Tibia, you can become a Knight, the skillful melee fighter, mighty blocker of monsters and absorber of damage; a Paladin, the accurate sniper, swift marksman and master of the arrows, bolts and spears; a Sorcerer, master of fire and lightning, user of powerful attack magic and runes; a Druid, master of earth and ice, healing and nature. Further, at level 20 and up, you may choose to promote your character, advancing him in rank to become an Elite Knight; a Royal Paladin; a Master Sorcerer and an Elder Druid. This has several advantages, such as improved hitpoint and mana regeneration.

Once you're in mainland Tibia, don't forget to do the pilgrimage: ask any city guide for a mission. Through this quest, you can get all of the blessings for a discounted price and even receive a money reward for doing so. Normally, purchasing all the blessings would cost at least 10,000 gold coins, but through this quest they have a net cost of 3,000 gold coins. Blessings reduce the amount of experience and skill loss when you die and also reduce the chance of losing your backpack or any of your items. If you have all the blessings, then you won't lose any of your items, not even your backpack.

The last blessing, the wisdom of solitude, requires a premium account, but will still work effectively even if you are a free player. Do note that one should still be careful even if one's character is blessed; on death, they are spent and to go through the cermonies again can be a quite expensive endeavor. Blessings are for minimizing the damage that you suffer should you die; the best option is always not to die in the first place.
