  5. Today:
  6. Simple and Compound Sentences
  7. Conjunctions in compound sentences
  8. Fixing run-on sentences and comma splices
  9. ---
  10. A simple sentence has one clause (subject + predicate):
  11.
  12. I teach English.
  13. I run.
  14. I am a student.
  15. I have always been interested in teaching English.
  16. ---
  17. A compound sentence has two (or more) independent clauses:
  18.
  19. I am learning English, but I want to learn French.
  20. She likes pizza, but she hates chocolate.
  21.
  22. Compound sentences need a coordinating conjunction between clauses.
  23. One way to remember is “FANBOYS” (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), but “and”, “but”, “or”, and “so” are the most common.
  24. ---
  25. If there are more than two clauses, use just a comma until the end, where you use “and”, “or”, or “but”.
  26. I’m learning English.
  27. My sister is learning French.
  28. My dad is learning Spanish.
  29. I’m learning English, my sister is learning French, and my dad is learning Spanish.
  30. ---
  31. We can also have compound subjects and predicates:
  32. My father and I are studying German. - compound subject (simple sentence)
  33. SSV
  34. I study German and teach English. - compound predicate (simple sentence)
  35. SVV
  36. My father and I study German and teach English. - compound subject, compound predicate (simple sentence)
  37. SSVV
  38. My father and I study German and teach English, and my sister is learning French. (compound sentence)
  39. SSVV,SV
  40. ---
  41. Run-on sentences are “too long”.
  42.
  43. Run-on sentences can be compound sentences without the conjunction or comma.
  44. Comma splices are compound sentences with the comma, but no conjunction.
  45.
  46. You can fix them by adding commas and conjunctions or by making a new sentence.
  47. ---
  48. It was raining, so I bought an umbrella. = Because it was raining, I brought an umbrella.
  49. = I brought an umbrella because it was raining.
  50. (Note: the clause with “because” is dependent, not independent.)
  51. ---
  52. Handout: Try to correct the run-on sentences.
  53. 1 My mother, father, and sister are coming to dinner tonight.
  54. (This is a simple sentence, but the form is “SSSV”.)
  55. 2 I like learning English, but it makes me tired.
  56. 3 My sister was taller than me when we were young, but now I am the tallest. It is fun.
  57. 4 I love school and learning because my teacher is nice.
  58. ---
