"Are you sure about this?"

"Yeah! Of course I'm sure."

"And you've done this before?"

"Why do you have to ask so many questions? Are you nervous?"

"Of course. But I am fairly certain that you are more," Fire Opal spoke truthfully to the other gem, glancing over as Pearl tried to hide his more-than-obvious nerves. "And we both should be. Fusion is... A touchy subject-"

At that, the paler gem clasped Fire Opal's gem-bearing hand in his own, giving it a squeeze. "Détendez-vous, Opal. Please."

And abruptly slapped his right palm onto the gem on Pearl's chest. The latter let out an "oh!" and, over the dull roar filling Fire Opal's ears as their gems glowed, he could hear a faint "is that how you do it?"

Pearl blinked. He shifted from his sudden seat on the ground, raising a hand to brush dirt off his chest and gem and that wasn't his hand. So pale, normally, with fine, strong fingers; replaced with bright orange skin and a large palm with equally large digits. The gem jumped up onto his feet and wobbily stood, now looking and feeling himself over. There was his gem, his pearl, resting in the middle of his chest like always, except now his chest was orange. His eyes darted to his right arm, then his hand, his palm- and there was something new.  A bright orange gem, brighter than his new skintone with yellow tones inside it that made it seem like it was shining. His face broke into a grin at the sight.

"Fire Opal!" He twisted himself around, hands still grabbing at himself. "Pearl!" The gem stopped in his tracks. "Or, no. What is it now?" Again, he looked at the gem on his palm, squinting at it for a few moments. "Citrine!"
