  109. NOTES

  111. A Blue Screen error will come up on the Windows preload when these models boot
  112. with "Compatible" mode instead of "AHCI" that is modified from the BIOS Setup/
  113. Config/Serial SATA menu. This is caused by an absence of a compatible driver
  114. on the Windows preload. Stay "AHCI" mode when you boot Windows preload.

  118. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  119.  
  120. Note:
  121. - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update
  122. the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the
  123. Version Information section.
  124.

  126. Manual Install
  127.  
  128. This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  129.  
  130. Downloading file
  131. 1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up
  132. windows will appear.
  133. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  134. 3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  135. 4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save
  136. button.
  137. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete.
  138. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating
  139. that the download completed successfully.
  140.  
  141. Extracting file
  142. 5. Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges.
  143. 6. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  144. 7. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  145. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  146. 9. In the Select Destination Location window, click Next. If you would like to
  147. select a different folder, click Browse.
  148. 10. In the Ready to Install window, click Install. All the necessary files will
  149. be extracted to the folder selected in the step 9.
  150. 11. Uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then click Finish to
  151. complete extraction.

  153. Delete the file saved in the step 4.

  156. 12. Click Start.

  178. [Windows XP] CLEAN INSTALL
  179.  
  180. Before installing the operating system, install Intel Matrix Storage Manager
  181. Driver, as follows:
  182.  
  183. Notes:
  184. - Be sure to install Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver before installing the
  185. operating system. Otherwise your computer will not respond; it will only
  186. display a blue screen.
  187. - In RAID mode, the following procedures is the ONLY procedure to install
  188. Windows XP successfully.
  189.  
  190. 1. Attach a floppy disk drive to your computer.
  191. 2. Download Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver from the Web site and extract
  192. the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM and copy the driver to a floppy disk.
  193. 3. Make sure that SATA AHCI or RAID is enabled;
  194. 3-1. Power off the computer.
  195. 3-2. Power on the computer.
  196. 3-3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad"
  197. logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be
  198. displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  199. 3-4. Select Config.
  200. 3-5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
  201. 3-6. Make sure RAID* or AHCI is selected. (* ThinkPad W700/W700ds only)
  202. 3-7. Press the F3 key, and then press the F3 key to go back to main menu.
  203. 4. Make sure that Operating System can be installed from Windows XP CD;
  204. 4-1. Select Startup.
  205. 4-2. Select Boot.
  206. 4-3. In Boot Priority Order, set "ATAPI CD0:" to the top of the list, "1".
  207. 4-4. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes.
  208. The computer will restart.
  209. 5. Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive, and restart the computer.
  210. 6. To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press F6.
  211. 7. When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device.
  212. 8. When prompted, insert the floppy disk that you created in step 2, and press
  213. Enter.
  214. 9. - If your system has Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller, select
  215. Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
  216. - If your system has Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller, select
  217. Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
  218. - If your system has Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, select
  219. Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
  220. - If you selected RAID mode in ThinkPand W700/700ds, select
  221. Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/PCHM SATA RAID Controller.
  222. 10. To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the floppy disk in
  223. the drive until the next reboot; the software may need to be copied from
  224. the floppy disk again when the files are copied during setup.
  225. 14. Follow the instruction to complete the Operating System installation.

  228. If you do not have a floppy disk drive, you can install Intel Matrix Storage
  229. Manager Driver by the following alternative procedure (applicable to other
  230. SATA settings except RAID):
  231.  
  232. NOTE:
  233. If you select AHCI for Serial ATA (SATA) in the BIOS Setup Utility before
  234. installing Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver, your computer will not
  235. respond; it will only display a blue screen.
  236.

  238. 1. Power off the computer.
  239. 2. Power on the computer.
  240. 3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo
  241. is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a
  242. password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  243. 4. Select Config.
  244. 5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
  245. 6. Select Compatibility.
  246. 7. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes.
  247. 8. Restart the computer.
  248. 9. Install Windows XP and Service Pack 2.
  249. 10. Download Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver from the Web site and extract
  250. the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM.
  251. 11. Go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE, and double-click install.cmd.
  252. 12. Power off and on the computer.
  253. 13. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo
  254. is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a
  255. password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  256. 14. Select Config.
  257. 15. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
  258. 16. Select AHCI.
  259. 17. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer
  260. will reboot and Windows XP will start.
  261. 19. The Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. Click No, not this
  262. time, and then click Next.
  263. 20. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click
  264. Next.
  265. 21. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Then select Include
  266. this location in the search:, specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM, and
  267. click Next. The Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard appears.
  268. 22. Click Finish.
  269. 23. When the System Settings Change window appears, click Yes. The computer
  270. restarts.

  276. 2. Click Start and Control Panel.
  277. 3. Click Performance and Maintenance and System.
