INT. SUNDERER – DAY
Soldiers of the NC are cramped in the back looking eager to bored to jazzed, but only one of them looks nervous:
JOHN ‘HIGBY’ MATTHEWS: the new piece of meat fresh from the NC’s most recent batch of inadequately trained soldiers. Compared to the other men in the Sundy he looks like an ultrasound. He bites his bottom lip and holds onto himself as a soldier sitting across from him asks,
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER # 1
You never die before, have you?
HIGBY
How did you -- ?
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER # 1
Trust me. I can tell. We all can tell
LATINO NC SOLDIER
You never kill anybody either?
Everyone in the sundy is staring at him with devious eyes.
HIGBY

CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1

NC SERGEANT

EXT. SUNDY – DAY – AMERISH
The sundy deploys as the soldiers hop out of the back, forming a perimeter a thick could of smoke hangs in front of the sundy, obscuring the battle up ahead.
A reaver SCREAMS overhead toward the battle, buzzing the sundy.
Every soldier keeps their rifle at the ready except Higby, who ducks.
NC SERGEANT
Chen! Get a cratering charge and make some cover
CHEN (ENGINEER)
Aye, sarge
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1 pulls Higby aside and holds him in CLOSE
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1
Look, cherry, this is just a back up sundy, nice and safe and not
Even that close to the front lines so I just need you to survive for
Half an hour ok? I got cert time riding on it, you make it
I might even give you a whole cert, OK? Can you do that?

CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1 and Higby both jump down –
INTO THE FOXHOLE.
The soldiers are up against the sides of it, their RIFLES are SHOULDERED and rested atop the ground.
SFX: (EXPLOSIONS)
The smoke of rockets fly overhead, reavers and mossies buzz around each other in the distant skies

CHEN
Contact!
FEMALE NC SOLDIER
What do you see?
CHEN
It’s a heavy… just one, coming right for us ‘bout two hundred yards away

HIGBY climbs up next to CHEN and peers over the edge of the foxhole.
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1 pulls HIGBY DOWN into the pit as CHEN’S HEAD EXPLODES. CAUCASIAN SOLDIER  #1 FALLS ON TOP OF HIGBY
A thousand angry TRACERS scream over the top of the foxhole

PAN UP:
THE HEAVY is suspended in mid air for a second that feels like an eternity. In his LEFT HAND is a SERRATED BOWIE KNIFE in his RIGHT HAND is a NAKED CARV. His whole weathered face is twisted in grimace like he spent a hundred years sucking a sour pickle. A predator pouncing on his prey, his arms are up and at the ready, his legs tucked gracefully underneath him.

THE HEAVIES KNIFE stabs deep into FELMALE NC SOLDIER’S SHOULDER as the heavy HIPFIRES HIS CARV
THE HEAVY uses his knife to drag FEMALE NC SOLDIER in front of him as a shield, propping his CARV on her opposite shoulder. She takes a bullet for him to the gut as he shoots CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #2 to the chest nearly a dozen times. Then shoots CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1 to the BACK OF THE HEAD as he lays on top of HIGBY
HIS SHIELDS FLICKER AND VANISH IN A HAIL OF FIRE TO HIS SIDE FROM
THE HEAVY spins to his attacker, activates his OVERSHIELD and guns down LATINO NC SOLDIER.

He drops his overshield. A single drop of blood trickles from a grazing round rolls down his cheek.
THE HEAVY drops his empty carv next to one of the half dozen corpse on the ground as he unsheaths his knife from the shoulder of the agonized FEMALE NC SOLDIER. THE HEAVY KICKS HER FORWARD and draws his COMMISAR as he readies to execute her.
Just then HIGBY ROLES CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1 FROM ATOP HIM AND RAISES HIS MERCENARY
He glances away as the bullet tears into THE HEAVIES NECK. THE HEAVY grasps his neck with both hands and falls to his knees, gurgling. His eyes widen, his face goes grey. He falls to his knees and then keels onto his side, gurgling, grasping his neck and helplessly flailing his legs. As the life drains out of him, he LOCKS EYES WITH HIGBY.
FEMALE NC SOLDIER sticks herself with a medkit, sutchering her wound closed before her eyes and begins REVIVING THE OTHER SOLDIERS. They groan and sit up as the life comes back into them
CHEN BEGINS DEMATERIALISING
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #1
Holy Christ, kid
HIGBY
Is he… dead?
FEMALE NC SOLDIER
Uh, yeah
HIGBY
Fuck!
THE HEAVY’S BODY (FOREGROUND) begins dematerializing as CHEN begins to REMATERIALIZE at the sundy
CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #2
Hey.. wait a minute… that’s…
LATINO NC SOLDIER

CAUCASIAN NC SOLDIER #2

HIGBY rubs the BACK OF HIS HEAD and with a blush, a proud smile, and a twinkle in his eye says:

CHEN
Saved our lives? You saved our convenience, kiddo. You got a long way to go
NC SOLDIER #1

Well, I guess I don’t feel too bad, knowing he didn’t really buy the farm and all
NC SERGEANT

LATINO NC SOLDIER
Yo, killer; go back to the sunderer and grab me a canteen. It’s on top
Of the bench seats in the back.
HIGBY climbs OUT OF THE PIT.
NC SERGEANT
Don’t let him boss you around like that, killer! He
Doesn’t even have rank on you
SFX: PLOP!
All of the other soldiers look with wide eyes at a STICK OF C4 sticking out of the dirt
EXT. PIT – SAME
A FIRBALL erupts behind HIGBY
HIGBY is slammed into the hull of the SUNDERER by THE HEAVY decked out as a light assault.
THEY HEAVY BENGINS GROUND AND POUNDING HIGBY
THE HEAVY
You like that, shitter? You like the sight of your own blood?
Nobody kills me! Especially not some babyfaced puke like you!
HIGBY tries to crawl away
THE HEAVY
Go on! Run! See how far you get!
THE HEAVY walks over to HIGBY and kicks him:
INT. PIT – SAME
HIGBY rolls down in and to the severed torso of NC SERGEANT. HIGBY pulls a FLASHBANG GRENADE from a pouch on his armor.
THE HEAVY jumps down into the pit, about to pummel higby. HIGBY TURNS AROUND AND EXTENDS THE FLAHSBANG INTO THE HEAVY’S FACE. The Heavy’s eyes are WIDE in disbelief, Higby’s are CLENCH SHUT
SMASH CUT: WHITE PANEL
SFX: BANG!
SFX: (SCREAMING)
THEY HEAVY staggers as he clutches his eyes.
The scattered remains of the squad is dematerializing
HIGBY’S RIGHT HAND is blown apart.
But he presses on and clambers his way out of the foxhole back to the
EXT. SUNDERER –SAME
He types on a the CONTROL PANEL with his one good arm the display says:
WARNING: no coordinates have been selected. Are you sure? [y/n]
HIGBY STANDS DEFIANTLY on the terminal, dematerializing from the bottom-up
Now alone, THE HEAVY looks left and right with his hands on his hips. He then looks at the empty C4 pouch on his hips.
As the rest of the squad begins rematerializing, he puts his COMMISAR to his head and says
THE HEAVY
