  6. When it comes to pictures of the solar system the flat Earth folk have a point: all imagery is either CGI, composited, or resembles artwork.
  7.
  8. Of course, just because an image is artwork does not mean the “thing” it represents is not real. It may not be real, but not necessarily. An artist who sketches your portrait has created a visual representation of someone real, but what about a picture of the “Loch Ness Monster”? The crucial difference is that no one seriously claims Nessie is real.
  9.
  10. But, what if you are presented with a drawing of someone you have never seen? The absence of a genuine photo always forces you to trust that a visual representation (e.g., CGI or artwork) really does represent someone or something real.
  11. By now, shouldn’t there be many clear photos of the Earth from space that rule out all possibility for anyone to suggest the Earth is flat? While there are ways to prove curvature exists without ever witnessing it: we should not, in 2017, still need to trust dubious “artwork”.
  12.
  13. So, how can it be that after more than 50 years of space exploration there are no photographs of the Earth from space that possess the same quality of “realness” as, say, those of the Moon? Ought there not to be at least one?! Some say it is because space agencies focus on gathering technical data rather than taking pretty photos for Instagram. But, given there are a considerable number of spectacular images from NASA it cannot be that alone. NASA want to show off the Earth to us, but for some reason only through the appearances of artwork! Flat Earthers claim it is because no one has made it to space, but perhaps the view from space isn’t that great and needs to be embellished?!
  14.
  15. Flat Earthers also claim that NASA uses sophisticated “augmented virtual reality” to fake objects on the International Space Station (ISS). But if NASA were doing that, then it would imply they have the capability to fake hyper-realistic images of the Earth from space that, upon scrutiny, would not be easily rejected as CGI or artwork. (Though fake, they would possess instantly recognisable “presence” and “realness”; like any genuine photo of the Moon you take with your phone.)
  16.
  17. The fact remains that NASA could have either taken a clear photo of the Earth from space that does not resemble artwork, or more simply cheated. What this tells us is that “doubtable pictures” of the Earth from space are necessary. That images of the Earth from space must resemble artwork.
  18.
  19. As it happens, something devious and insidious happens when artwork enters the mind as the real thing. It puts that person on a path to accepting fantasy as reality. This happened to us all as children when we first saw pictures of the Earth from space that were artwork, but being too young to know it we internalised it as real. That first impression affected us all.

  21. Alas, I have run out of space. If this topic is of interest to you, then be sure to take a squiz at my other writing.
