  5.
  6. Freedom of speech is something that Americans can take pride in. We have the right to voice our opinion even when the majority does not agree. Despite the first amendment, certain views are censored online. When sites like Wiki Leaks are taken down, people are right to wonder what happened to their freedom of speech. Internet censorship has gone too far by taking down websites, censoring information, and imprisoning citizens for information leaking.
  7.
  8. Put your first alphabetical reference here:
  9. “The Obama administration more often than ever censored government files or outright denied access to them last year under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, according to a new analysis of federal data by The Associated Press.”

  17. This source goes along with my point about how the government is censoring online information. It supports my thesis and will go in the third paragraph. This source helps prove that the government is hiding something by with-holding government files. Why are secrets like the NSA kept from us?
  18.
  19.
  20. Put your second alphabetical reference here:
  21. “Juan Mendez, the UN special rapporteur and torture has declared the US governments treatment of Pvt. Manning as cruel, inhuman and degrading.””

  26.
  27. Start your assessment here:
  28. I will use this source to make a point that the US government goes too far in censoring their secrets. He was tortured in prison for saying things the government did not like. I think this supports my thesis. This source will be used to support the final point in my thesis, imprisoning people who leak government secrets. It will be in the paragraph before the conclusion.
  29.
  30.
  31. Put your third alphabetical reference here:
  32. "While blocking and filtering remain the preferred methods of censorship in many countries," said Freedom on the Net Project Director Sanja Kelly,"governments are increasingly looking at who is saying what online, and finding ways to punish them.””

  36.
  37. The author is stating that despite advocates efforts, internet censorship is becoming more of a problem. This is pretty up to date since it was only published in October of 2013. Something posted too long ago may no longer be relevant. Huffington Post, in my opinion, is a pretty credible source.

  39. Start your assessment here:
  40. This source will be used to back up my thesis point about the government taking things too far. Censoring information was one of the points in my thesis. The talks about how information censoring has gone farther by keeping tabs on who is posting the material. They are even starting to punish people for posting certain things. Anything that is harmful to other people should always be banned from the internet. But information should be free and the government should not track people down unless they are a threat to others.
  41.
  42. Put your fourth alphabetical reference here:
  43. “That's because many of the people who use The Pirate Bay are already stocking up on ways to evade their ISPs, thanks to the Internet's power to educate and spread ideas through image boards and sites like Reddit. Most techniques are the same as those used by companies wishing to keep their data secure online.”

  46.
  47. The main point of this article is that blacklisting websites like The Pirate Bay will not actually keep people from accessing the site. Even if the site gets taken down, people will find other sources to download copy-right material illegally. The point is not that it's okay to download these products illegally. The point is that the government's efforts to censor the internet by taking down sites will not be beneficial to anyone. This article was published all the way in 2012 but since The Pirate Bay is still up I would consider it to be a reliable source. The article is right in saying that taking down a site like Pirate Bay is not an easy task.

  50. This source will be used to back up my thesis point about the government taking things too far. Censoring information was one of the points in my thesis. The article talks about how information censorship has gone even further by keeping tabs on who is posting the material. They are even starting to punish people for posting offensive comments. Anything that is harmful to other people should always be banned from the internet. But information should be free and the government should not track people down unless they are a threat to others.

  52. Put your fifth alphabetical reference here "Interestingly, Twitter's blockage of the neo-Nazi Better Hannover (A hannoverticker) stimulated interest in the group, causing its number of followers to grow rapidly by 200 in just one day."

  56.
  57. The main point of this article is that internet censorship sometimes has an opposite effect. Censoring websites has resulted in drawing attention to the censored material. This article was released in 2013 so it's still relevant. It was published in the Communications of ACM.

  60. This source does a good job of opposing internet censorship. It supports my thesis by saying that taking down certain websites may actually give the website more popularity if it comes back up. This will be in the 2nd paragraph of my essay where I talk about the internet taking down sites and information.
