  1. Phoenotopia any% Q&A 4.0
  2. ========================
  3. Q: What is this game?
  4. A: It's a free online Zelda-inspired 2D platformer provided by Newgrounds. It's also hosted at http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/phoenotopia, which is my preference because it's easier to refresh on OneMoreLevel than on Newgrounds, and also because I am more familiar with OneMoreLevel.
  5.
  6. Q: Why would you run a game like this?
  7. A: Because it's fun. (http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/561/280/7f5.gif)
  8.
  9. Q: What does any% mean?
  10. A: Beat the game as fast as possible. Timing starts upon selecting "Yes" to create a new file (file slot must be fresh) and ends after the 66 escape sequence.
  11.
  12. Q: What do RTA and IGT mean?
  13. A: Real Time Attack and In Game Time. The former is shown on the splits, and the latter is shown in the credits. The in-game timer is a little funky compared to real time, so pay no heed to the difference between them.
  14.
  15. Q: What's so special about Phoenotopia as a speedgame?
  16. A: Phoenotopia may seem relatively solid to those who have played it casually, but it is actually more broken than you may think. There is one primary glitch that is abused throughout the primary stages of the run: Loot Duping. When a loot container is broken multiple times on the same frame, its monetary yield is multiplied by as many times as it is broken on that frame. The easiest way to exploit this is to throw the loot container at a corner, making it collide with the wall and the floor simultaneously.
  17. Through my investigation of this game, I have figured out all possible applications of this trick, and they are shown on the following document:
  18. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VYxyuETFRONT9WAC8PD5IbJn6rz2mora7GUP_IMzq-k/edit?usp=sharing
  19. I initially thought that the trick was pixel-perfect, but now I realize that it's a three-pixel window.
  20. There is also a glitch that allows you to clip through certain obstacles, which is described later on.
  21. Another glitch (that sadly has no practical applications in any%) allows you to push key doors if you have a container with another container or a bomb on top and slightly to the right. Don't ask me why this happens, because I have no idea.
  22. Also, in Ancient's Crater, you can skip every lockout battle. The first three are skipped by chucking a bomb far enough that it lands on the barricade and running past the bomb before it explodes (although I failed to skip the third). The fourth, which skips an annoying Harpy battle, requires a stamina boost, a relatively precise jump, and a slowed descent using the Rocket Boots.
  23.
  24. Q: What's with that weird method of breaking chests / piggy banks / boxes?
  25. A: See the information above regarding Loot Duping.
  26.
  27. Q: How did you clip through that door/barricade?
  28. A: When Gale tries to jump with a container on top of her head, the game moves her to the nearest available space in any of the four basic directions (up, down, left, or right). With proper positioning and—given you're not clipping through a key door from the left side—proper placement of surrounding objects, the nearest available space will be just past the door/barricade.
  29. The two applications of this glitch in the any% route are:
  30. 1. Avoiding the pit of bandits on the way to the right key in Bandits' Lair
  31. 2. Skipping the second X door in Dread Lands, saving roughly 10 seconds
  32.
  33. Q: Is there a guide for this?
  34. A: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R9RCd2kDnB83eX2DuJaYEMN9lHOb9O39p3dr2GScJuE/edit?usp=sharing
  35.
  36. Q: How do you record footage of a web game?
  37. A: I use OBS. It's a free and easy download at https://obsproject.com/
  38.
  39. Q: What split program do you use?
  40. A: I use Llanfair because I am on OS X. This program can be downloaded at http://jenmaarai.com/llanfair/en/
  41. To be honest, I never knew how to set it up until I realized that you need a second mouse button.
  42.
  43. Q: What was the 53:16 run and why didn't you upload it?
  44. A: The night before, I had a run that was on great pace until I died on Big Eye, which wasted about 50 seconds. I got a recording of the run, but, out of shame, I decided to keep it to myself.
  45.
  46. Q: What's that keyboard viewer?
  47. A: It's a Mac thing. I don't know if there are any counterparts for other operating systems.
  48.
  49. Q: Lag spikes?
  50. A: It's a Flash game. Nothing I can do about it. Can't download an external SWF because the game has an internal countermeasure against accessing it from an unauthorized source.
  51.
  52. Q: Why is the audio quality so bad?
  53. A: I couldn't be bothered to set up a program for capturing computer audio (El Capitan makes it impossible to set up WavTap, and Soundflower seems too complicated for me to deal with), so I just decided to stick with external audio. (On a less important note, my key presses are audible this way.)
  54.
  55. Q: What does honey do? Why is it so important to the run?
  56. A: Honey temporarily increases Gale's movement speed by 20% and doubles her stamina regeneration, which makes her move faster and helps to clear areas more easily. In particular, there is one skip in Ancient's Crater (Harpy skip) that is extremely difficult without a stamina boost.
  57. Honeyed Tumonds boost stamina for half the time and restore 7 HP, while E-Sodas (of which only one is collected during the whole run) restore 20 HP and have the same effect as honey.
  58.
  59. Q: Why do you use save statues so seldom after buying honey?
  60. A: If you save at a save statue with a stamina boost and reload your save, your stamina boost will be gone. One of the challenges of routing is to make sure that as little stamina boost mileage as possible is wasted.
  61.
  62. Q: If you die so easily, why not collect Heart Rubies?
  63. A: They are unimportant to the run, and each results in a minor cutscene that wastes about 5 seconds.
  64.
  65. Q: Ever consider the French version?
  66. A: Actually, I have. It wastes about 4 seconds in any% compared to the English version.
