  1. "That'll be seven bits."
  2. >The mare smiles as she fishes out seven, golden bits and lays them on the counter for you.
  3. >You pick them up and bid her farewell, taking the fruit with her.
  4. >The smell of exotic fruits has filled your nostrils for the past several hours.
  5. >You run the exotic fruit stand in Ponyville, curtosy of the Hollow Shades Fruit company.
  6. >It's mostly mangoes, but there are also bananas, lychees, and starfruits.
  7. >Usually, you sell out the entire stand by the end of the day.
  8. >You were already over half done your stocks.
  9. >It wasn't even noon, yet.
  10. >You wonder when -she- will give you a visit, today.
  11. >She, who is standing around the corner of the building five feet from where you are.
  12. >She, who's blue tail has been peaking out for the past two hours.
  13. >She, who doesn't think you see her.
  14. >Every time a pony passes by that corner, they give her a curious glance.
  15. >You sigh.
  16. >Another two hours pass, and your stock is almost completely depleted.
  17. >Only a few mangoes are left.
  18. >You're glad, because you can leave as soon as the last one sells.
  19. >And the tail hasn't moved.
  20. >Until now.
  21. >Finally, you see the tail retract, and two bright, amber eyes peak from around the corner at you.
  22. >You're looking straight at her with a bored expression, your head resting on a hand,
  23. >She gasps and quickly pulls back.
  24. >You sigh.
  25.
  26. >Another hour passes and she steals several more attempts of peaking at you.
  27. >When another customer comes and you are left with one, last mango, you can hear her wimper.
  28. >Finally, a hoof reluctantly steps from around the corner.
  29. >Five minutes pass before another hoof follows, until she finally, shakily exposes herself to you.
  30. >She looks like she was crying.
  31. >Her blue mane was unkempt and the grey fur on her face was slightly matted.
  32. >She tries to put on a friendly smile as she approaches.
  33. >Instead, she looks like she's sick.
  34. >After what seems like a ten minute walk for a staggering distance of five feet, she reaches your stall.
  35. >You tap your fingers on the wooden counter.
  36. "Hello, how may I help you?" you say in a bored tone.
  37. >You aren't paid enough to deal with this shit.
  38. >She ignores your exasperation.
  39. >"H-h-hello..."
  40. >Her chest is heaving.
  41. >Her eyes are wide.
  42. >You wait for her to say something.
  43. >Instead, she beings to hyperventilate.
  44. >"H-h... hah... haah..."
  45. >You roll your eyes.
  46. "Would you like to buy the last mango? Final stock sale is 50 percent off."
  47. >"Heeh... haaah...!"
  48. >She falls to the floor, belly up, heaving.
  49.
  50. >After a big sigh, you grab the mango and make your way around the counter.
  51. "Echo, are you okay?"
  52. >She twitches her head to you.
  53. >Her breathing becomes heavier, but she tries to make a gesture to you with her hooves.
  54. >It just looks like she's pawing the air.
  55. >You have no idea what she's trying to say.
  56. >Tears begin to form around her eyes.
  57. "Ugh. Come on, don't cry."
  58. >"I-I... W-would you..."
  59. >She trails off.
  60. "Here, you can have the mango for free. On me."
  61. >You hold out the mango.
  62. >Her eyes widen and her breathing seems to come to a stop.
  63. >For a whole minute, she just lays there and stares at the mango.
  64. >Another day, another awkward experience with this mare.
  65. >Before you retract your arm, she leaps up and swipes the mango into her mouth.
  66. "Hey!"
  67. >She sprints, darting around the corner.
  68. >What the hell.
  69. >Seriously.
  70. >It was free, anyways.
  71. >You sigh.
  72. >Fucking Echo.
