- (07:04:56 AM) GameClubFan_371964 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
- (07:05:10 AM) Cheeseness: Since the streams are meant to be a background to the discussion, we feel that having the streamers talk would detract from that
- (07:05:19 AM) ALPHATT: yeah
- (07:05:33 AM) Schmuppes: wow
- (07:05:39 AM) Schmuppes: what a copcar is that?

- (07:07:30 AM) Fireflower: anyone remember where the Blue room is?

- (07:09:18 AM) Cheeseness: I'm going to be quiet for a little bit, guys
- (07:09:28 AM) ALPHATT: sure
- (07:09:31 AM) swordfischer: ahm am I the only one who has troubles with the feed? seems jittering
- (07:09:32 AM) Cheeseness: But if somebody wants to give a recap of the story so far and what's going on, that might help for newcomers
- (07:09:37 AM) VurbGames [4514b349@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
- (07:09:43 AM) Cheeseness: (we're on our way to meet Jack at The Blue Room IIRC)

- (07:11:23 AM) SteelRaven7: Wow that baseline sounds off
- (07:12:16 AM) ALPHATT: the sound jersk around abit, not a huge deal
- (07:12:21 AM) Cheeseness: So, for anybody who needs to catch up, we've been temporarily assigned as a detective guy and have busted a couple of drug dealers in a park
- (07:12:37 AM) Cheeseness: After locking them away, our friend Jack has asked us to meet him
- (07:13:00 AM) Cheeseness: His daughter seems to be involved with the drug ring that we're investigating
- (07:13:27 AM) Cheeseness: Th escapee is one of the two people we caught in the park last week, I think?
- (07:13:48 AM) ALPHATT: what's the guys nickname?

- (07:21:59 AM) Schmuppes: why not
- (07:22:06 AM) ALPHATT: I like how he shakes up people and stuff, but also accounts for profit margain
- (07:22:10 AM) Cheeseness: Ha, this phone call

- (07:24:29 AM) Cheeseness: It's smooth for me
- (07:24:47 AM) Cheeseness: The walk animations are awesome >_<
- (07:24:57 AM) ALPHATT: probably me, I'm in the EU, and sometimes twitch assigns the wrong server for me

- (07:31:44 AM) ALPHATT: I may be wron though
- (07:32:31 AM) Cheeseness: That other cell does get used after all!
- (07:32:47 AM) Fireflower: :)
- (07:32:59 AM) ALPHATT: I like how nonchalant the insults in this game really are
- (07:33:06 AM) Syd: I think the original was from an era when having actual sound capabilities was still rare to find in PCs.
- (07:33:11 AM) ALPHATT: I guess that's real policework for ya
- (07:33:14 AM) Syd: Aside from PC speaker beeps
- (07:33:34 AM) ALPHATT: yeah, I sure didn't have sound cards
- (07:33:42 AM) ALPHATT: until the early 00s
- (07:34:07 AM) Cheeseness: Sonny's nearly got a Crix Madine haircut
- (07:34:09 AM) ALPHATT: or even a color monitor for that matter
- (07:34:33 AM) ALPHATT: I live in Hungary though, we were a bit behind on PC stuff until the 200s
- (07:34:35 AM) Syd: Soundblaster/AdLib took off in the early 90s, I think.
- (07:34:35 AM) ALPHATT: *2000s

- (07:41:45 AM) Schmuppes: did the developers back in the day hire writers that were properly into crime stories back in the day?
- (07:41:47 AM) Fireflower: yeah
- (07:42:13 AM) Schmuppes: like, guys who make up crimes for the TV?
- (07:42:18 AM) Cheeseness: Jim Wells (creator of the Police Quest series) was a retired police officer
- (07:42:26 AM) Schmuppes: okay
- (07:42:33 AM) Cheeseness: Walls^
- (07:42:51 AM) Cheeseness: He wrote the first three PQ games, I think
- (07:44:01 AM) Fireflower: hmm... maybe i should have used the poster on the body?
- (07:44:15 AM) Cheeseness: Do you want to head back and try?
- (07:44:34 AM) Fireflower: if you don't mind :)
- (07:44:39 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, go for it :)
- (07:45:00 AM) Fireflower: think i need to restore saved game
- (07:45:03 AM) Cheeseness: Can you go back?

- (07:45:05 AM) Cheeseness: No worries
- (07:47:32 AM) Fireflower: :(
- (07:47:32 AM) Cheeseness: Ha, it wasn't necessary

- (07:55:33 AM) CallmeSquinky: haha crappy old VGA-era audio xP
- (07:56:01 AM) Cheeseness: When we first stated playing, I thought it was noise on Fireflower's mic >_<
- (07:56:37 AM) Fireflower: nice hair color!
- (07:57:17 AM) Fireflower: leisure suit :)
- (07:59:11 AM) Cheeseness: ;_;
- (08:06:45 AM) Cheeseness: Whitey?
- (08:06:57 AM) Syd: Yeah, that's his undercover nickname
- (08:06:58 AM) Cheeseness: lol
- (08:07:10 AM) Cheeseness: yeah
- (08:08:33 AM) Cheeseness: I love how big their clothes look in the thumbnails
- (08:09:08 AM) Cheeseness: Either that or they've got tiny, tiny heads
- (08:09:31 AM) Syd: I like to just imagine them with very tiny heads.
- (08:10:20 AM) Cheeseness: Sonny's laying it on a bit thick >_<
- (08:10:31 AM) Syd: If it works, it works. :P
- (08:11:27 AM) Fireflower: :)

- (08:15:33 AM) madmoose [~Hat@hide-9B83DD1.nerp.net] entered the room.
- (08:16:11 AM) Cheeseness: Fireflower: Was that an option?
- (08:16:12 AM) Cheeseness: Hi madmoose
- (08:16:22 AM) madmoose: Hello hello
- (08:17:26 AM) Fireflower: dunno
- (08:17:52 AM) Fireflower: poker time
- (08:19:24 AM) Schmuppes: Otto Lipschitz
- (08:19:33 AM) Schmuppes: who made that one up
- (08:19:59 AM) Cheeseness: Do you actually get to play cards?
- (08:20:24 AM) Fireflower: hmm
- (08:20:26 AM) Cheeseness: Puts a whole new meaning to push-to-win
- (08:20:28 AM) Fireflower: three options
- (08:20:35 AM) Cheeseness: Did you save first? >_<
- (08:20:47 AM) Fireflower: i saved in the room...
- (08:21:00 AM) Cheeseness: I think that "Yes!" is a wrong answer
- (08:21:04 AM) Cheeseness: Since you're working
- (08:21:09 AM) Cheeseness: You probably shouldn't be wanting to play ^_^
- (08:21:17 AM) GameClubFan_013903 [4670389f@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
- (08:21:23 AM) Syd: Guide says to play, and save if you win. It also said you should have saved before so you could restore if you lost. :P
- (08:21:36 AM) Fireflower: yeah :)
- (08:21:52 AM) Fireflower: no, but win anyway?
- (08:21:59 AM) Cheeseness: Give it a try
- (08:22:26 AM) Syd: Maybe those options are for people that don't know how to play poker.
- (08:22:28 AM) Fireflower: :)
- (08:22:31 AM) Fireflower: yeah
- (08:22:33 AM) Syd: But the option to actually play is there for people that want to
- (08:22:41 AM) Cheeseness: You can actually play?
- (08:22:53 AM) Syd: I don't know. I'm just going off of assumptions.
- (08:22:56 AM) Fireflower: think i could have
- (08:23:05 AM) Cheeseness: It would have been interesting to see the interface
- (08:23:14 AM) Fireflower: think the yes option was to play
- (08:23:48 AM) Syd: I think he'll have to play again soon after he does a few things, so he could try it again then
- (08:24:07 AM) Fireflower: i'm stuck...
- (08:24:17 AM) Syd: Guide says to go to your room and call for backup
- (08:24:24 AM) Fireflower: yeah
- (08:24:27 AM) Syd: I'm looking at this http://www.sierrahelp.com/Walkthroughs/PQ1VGAWalkthrough.html
- (08:24:41 AM) GameClubFan_621124 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).

- (08:24:58 AM) GameClubFan_013903 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
- (08:25:23 AM) Fireflower: i meant i got stuck on the waitress :)
- (08:25:29 AM) Syd: Ah
- (08:25:33 AM) Cheeseness: >_<
- (08:25:50 AM) Fireflower: how am i supposed to know the number o call?
- (08:26:23 AM) Cheeseness: 911?
- (08:26:26 AM) Cheeseness: :D
- (08:26:29 AM) Fireflower: :)
- (08:32:26 AM) Fireflower: play?
- (08:32:34 AM) Syd: Give it a try
- (08:32:39 AM) Josh_Mandel [4a462c71@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
- (08:32:47 AM) Syd: Hey Josh_Mandel!
- (08:32:49 AM) Fireflower: ?
- (08:32:53 AM) Syd: Oh, did it crash?
- (08:32:57 AM) Syd: How weird
- (08:32:58 AM) Fireflower: yeah
- (08:33:07 AM) Cheeseness: >_<
- (08:33:10 AM) Syd: Guess that made dosbox grumpy
- (08:33:12 AM) Cheeseness: Hey Josh_Mandel
- (08:33:18 AM) Josh_Mandel: Sorry...we're in crunch mode, my days are as packed as my nights. :-/
- (08:33:23 AM) Fireflower: hey Josh
- (08:33:29 AM) Josh_Mandel: G'day, all
- (08:33:52 AM) Josh_Mandel: I can't stay, I just dropped in to say hey and answer any questions.
- (08:33:53 AM) Fireflower: guess no play then
- (08:34:20 AM) Syd: Josh, could you actually play poker in this? Fireflower tried, but dosbox crashed when he hit "Yes!"
- (08:34:39 AM) Josh_Mandel: Yes, you definitely could.
- (08:34:53 AM) Fireflower: should it try again?
- (08:34:53 AM) Syd: Ooh, interesting
- (08:35:08 AM) Syd: If you want
- (08:35:08 AM) Fireflower: *I
- (08:35:21 AM) Fireflower: :)
- (08:35:30 AM) Syd: Oh, there we go, it works this time.
- (08:35:42 AM) Josh_Mandel: We had handy plug-in modules for things like poker, slot machines, and so on...developed for various games and then passed around (Hoyle's, PQ, LSL, etc.)
- (08:35:55 AM) Cheeseness: I was about to ask about that :)
- (08:36:09 AM) Cheeseness: Was this in the original PQ1 as well?
- (08:36:25 AM) Josh_Mandel: Good question...I don't remember, but I bet it was.
- (08:36:43 AM) Fireflower: any poker sharks in the chat?
- (08:37:01 AM) deathride58: Call Call Call Call Call Check Call
- (08:37:05 AM) deathride58: 'Nuff said
- (08:37:12 AM) Syd: I can barely play poker at all. I've never been very good with it.
- (08:37:14 AM) deathride58: ./Ihavenoexperienceinpokerlol
- (08:37:15 AM) Cheeseness: I play a little bit of Poker Night At The Inventory :D
- (08:37:27 AM) Syd: Same here, Cheeseness. :)
- (08:37:31 AM) deathride58: Same
- (08:37:47 AM) Cheeseness: Just treat it like a beat-em-up. Flail wildly and mash all the buttons. You'll hit something eventually.
- (08:37:48 AM) Syd: The AI beats me pretty often in that. :P
- (08:37:54 AM) Cheeseness: Syd: Same here >_<
- (08:38:02 AM) Cheeseness: I'm still hunting the last achievement
- (08:38:11 AM) deathride58: I mainly done it for the TF2 items... And ended up having to reset the game's save data for achievements
- (08:40:09 AM) Josh_Mandel: I believe Frank above is Robert Fisher, who was one of the company's main IT guys.
- (08:40:32 AM) Cheeseness: Awesome
- (08:41:15 AM) Cheeseness: How did you guys go about developing the imagery for the people in the remake? Did you scan and process photos?
- (08:42:19 AM) Josh_Mandel: Yes, exactly. I think we did this first for "Jones in the Fast Lane," and then expanded it to lots of other games (such as the PQ1 remake and KQ6).
- (08:42:29 AM) Fireflower: damn it :)
- (08:43:57 AM) Cheeseness: From what you've said, it sounds like Sierra staff were the primary source for that. How did people feel about getting their faces into the games?
- (08:44:20 AM) Fireflower: win :)
- (08:44:48 AM) Josh_Mandel: Some of them loved it, some didn't want to be in the games at ALL, and many were pretty indifferent. Which surprised me, because I always thought it was quite an honor.
- (08:45:08 AM) Josh_Mandel: Robert Fisher was also the inspiration for the box cover, so he was made to look "extra evil," which I think he kind of enjoyed.
- (08:45:18 AM) Cheeseness: :D
- (08:45:50 AM) Cheeseness: Man, I could go some chips about now
- (08:46:45 AM) Cheeseness: It's interesting. I'd have expected that there wouldn't be anybody who didn't have a strong opinion one way or the other about being in one of the company's games
- (08:48:00 AM) Cheeseness: How much do we have to win? Do we have to win? (I got distracted for a bit)
- (08:48:06 AM) Fireflower: dunno
- (08:48:22 AM) Josh_Mandel: Well, you have to bear in mind that a lot of employees weren't there because it was Sierra per se, but because Sierra happened to be the largest (or second-largest) employer for an hour in any direction. There were a lot of plain ol' mountain people at the company, people who weren't at all interested in computer games per se.
- (08:48:22 AM) Cheeseness: Or are we just biding time until backup arrives
- (08:48:42 AM) Cheeseness: Josh_Mandel: Ah, that's true. You mentioned that last week
- (08:49:13 AM) Syd: Those people might not have realized the impact these games were going to make
- (08:49:20 AM) Josh_Mandel: Yeah, I thought so, but I wasn't sure. There are a lot of interviews going on because of Larry, and I can't always remember what I told whom. :-/
- (08:49:47 AM) Josh_Mandel: They may well not have realized that, yes. Or they might not have cared. A lot of them thought us "creative types" were pretty weird.
- (08:50:32 AM) Josh_Mandel: Did I tell you how conservative Oakhurst was?
- (08:50:50 AM) Cheeseness: From a gamer's perspective, it's hard to imagine that there were people who were making awesome stuff who weren't all that invested in it.
- (08:50:58 AM) Josh_Mandel: I know!!
- (08:51:50 AM) Cheeseness: I wonder if that enriched or detracted from the development of the titles. People who are a little more distanced might have some interesting perspectives and insights
- (08:52:21 AM) Fireflower: how do i beat this game Josh? :)
- (08:52:35 AM) Josh_Mandel: :-( I don't remember! I bet it's based on how much you win.
- (08:52:52 AM) Josh_Mandel: Then again, it could be a timer. I could check.
- (08:53:10 AM) Syd: Maybe the other guys need to run out of money, but that could take a while.
- (08:53:33 AM) Cheeseness: "Sit down on the unoccupied chair and play until they get bored."
- (08:53:44 AM) Josh_Mandel: The people who worked at the company simply because it was local rarely ended up in the game development area. They were more likely to be found in QA, customer service, or production.
- (08:54:26 AM) Cheeseness: They'd still have some sort of impact on general climate/culture though, I'd expect
- (08:54:27 AM) Josh_Mandel: For game development, they either wanted people who'd risen up in the ranks from other jobs (like Al Lowe and Scott Murphy), or who were brought in because of specific talents (like art or composing).
- (08:55:59 AM) deathride58 left the room (quit: Quit: Derp).
- (08:56:30 AM) Josh_Mandel: I suppose, but it would be really hard to pin down.
- (08:57:12 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah
- (08:58:17 AM) Cheeseness: This sequence is proving to be surprisingly long
- (08:58:23 AM) Josh_Mandel: If anything, they would've quashed enthusiasm. When you're working round the clock to make something you're proud of, and people around you drop in and communicate that they couldn't care less about the product, it's depressing.
- (08:58:31 AM) Cheeseness: That's true
- (08:59:31 AM) Cheeseness: Fireflower: You've got a lot of chips. Don't be afraid to bluff your way out of a weak hand from time to time :D
- (08:59:43 AM) Fireflower: yeah :)
- (09:00:11 AM) Josh_Mandel: I need to pop back to work. Sorry. :-( Thanks, everyone!
- (09:00:21 AM) Cheeseness: No worries. Thanks again for joining us!
- (09:00:33 AM) Cheeseness: Best of luck with Larry and Fester Mudd :)
- (09:00:45 AM) Josh_Mandel: My pleasure! And thank you, Cheeseness!
- (09:00:45 AM) Syd: Thanks for coming, Josh
- (09:01:00 AM) Josh_Mandel: (BTW, I have put at least a couple of references to PQ in the new Larry. ;-) )
- (09:01:06 AM) Josh_Mandel: Bye!
- (09:01:08 AM) Josh_Mandel left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
- (09:01:43 AM) Syd: A bit hard to tell how long this game will go when there's no clear win scenario.
- (09:01:55 AM) Cheeseness: I guess undercover work is like that thoguh
- (09:02:01 AM) Fireflower: nice :)
- (09:02:25 AM) Cheeseness: lol, I still can't get over "Whitey"
- (09:02:36 AM) Syd: Heh
- (09:03:14 AM) Fireflower: Jesse Bains
- (09:03:29 AM) Cheeseness: Use your sonic screwdriver on him
- (09:04:39 AM) Cheeseness: I would have thought we'd have had an audio cue when the phone rang
- (09:05:34 AM) Cheeseness: Did he have a gun?
- (09:05:34 AM) Syd: Backup made it just in time.
- (09:05:59 AM) Fireflower: dunno
- (09:06:02 AM) Fireflower: didnt see one
- (09:06:40 AM) Syd: I assume he did
- (09:06:45 AM) Cheeseness: Since they all assume that he was about to shoot you, I guess he did
- (09:07:18 AM) Fireflower: Jesse Bains will be back :)
- (09:08:00 AM) Cheeseness: Ha
- (09:08:28 AM) Cheeseness: A happy ending for Sonny Bonds?
- (09:08:39 AM) Syd: Looks like it
- (09:08:52 AM) Fireflower: yep
- (09:09:04 AM) Cheeseness: ha, so the reason I didn't hear the phone ring for Jesse before was because I didn't have my headphones on >_<
- (09:09:16 AM) Cheeseness: So, what did everybody think of Police Quest 1?
- (09:09:33 AM) Schmuppes: looked interesting
- (09:09:51 AM) Syd: It looked good. I'll have to add the Police Quest series to the list of games I should try.
- (09:09:54 AM) Schmuppes: but the controls seemed kinda complicated
- (09:10:03 AM) Schmuppes: not only in the car
- (09:10:22 AM) Fireflower: there's Josh :)
- (09:10:46 AM) swordfischer: Not being an adventure-ry kinda of guy - it is not something I'd play (lack of patience), but I do enjoy watching someone play it. Also nice to see a game where you actually have to pay attention to what you are doing :)
- (09:10:59 AM) Cheeseness: I find it a testament to the emerging potential of games that people were engaged by and could learn from the original non-VGA version (according to its Wikipedia page, it was used as a training supplement for police officers, allowing them to explore some of the risks involved with police life in a safe way)
- (09:11:35 AM) Syd: Interesting
- (09:11:50 AM) Syd left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
- (09:12:02 AM) Syd [ae35447c@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
- (09:12:19 AM) Syd: Accidentally closed the tab I had the chat on. :P
- (09:12:28 AM) Cheeseness: :D
- (09:12:35 AM) Cheeseness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_Quest:_In_Pursuit_of_the_Death_Angel
- (09:12:40 AM) Cheeseness: That's the page by the way
- (09:12:44 AM) jfrisby left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
- (09:12:49 AM) Cheeseness: bye jfrisby
- (09:12:51 AM) Cheeseness: :b
- (09:13:21 AM) Syd: I can definitely see how it could be used as an educational tool for officers, since it does make you follow police procedure.
- (09:13:31 AM) Fireflower: Schmuppes, the controls isn't that complicated
- (09:13:32 AM) Cheeseness: "Police Quest has proven to be a practical, effective training tool officers enjoy using. It safely demonstrates to rookies the consequences of failing to observe proper police procedures and can serve as a valuable refresher course for experienced officers."
- (09:13:58 AM) Cheeseness: Fireflower: Did you check whether there were verb hotkeys?
- (09:14:13 AM) Cheeseness: I still think the cycling verb interface is cumbersome
- (09:14:14 AM) Fireflower: yeah, couldn't find any
- (09:14:38 AM) Fireflower: nothing in the manual about it
- (09:14:56 AM) Cheeseness: The forum thread for PQ1 is here if people want to continue discussing after we're done here: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/8322/P0/
- (09:15:45 AM) Cheeseness: We've also still got a survey running asking for feedback on the first year of Game Club: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/8355/
- (09:16:01 AM) Syd: Hotkeys would have been a nice addition to the game. Sam and Max had them, though I didn't use them often (mostly just used the hotkey for walk, didn't bother with most of the others).
- (09:16:02 AM) Cheeseness: I'll be closing the survey off at the end of the month and sharing the results
