  180. (08:21:00 AM) Cheeseness: I think that "Yes!" is a wrong answer
  181. (08:21:04 AM) Cheeseness: Since you're working
  182. (08:21:09 AM) Cheeseness: You probably shouldn't be wanting to play ^_^
  183. (08:21:17 AM) GameClubFan_013903 [4670389f@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  184. (08:21:23 AM) Syd: Guide says to play, and save if you win. It also said you should have saved before so you could restore if you lost. :P
  185. (08:21:36 AM) Fireflower: yeah :)
  186. (08:21:52 AM) Fireflower: no, but win anyway?
  187. (08:21:59 AM) Cheeseness: Give it a try
  188. (08:22:26 AM) Syd: Maybe those options are for people that don't know how to play poker.
  189. (08:22:28 AM) Fireflower: :)
  190. (08:22:31 AM) Fireflower: yeah
  191. (08:22:33 AM) Syd: But the option to actually play is there for people that want to
  192. (08:22:41 AM) Cheeseness: You can actually play?
  193. (08:22:53 AM) Syd: I don't know. I'm just going off of assumptions.
  194. (08:22:56 AM) Fireflower: think i could have
  195. (08:23:05 AM) Cheeseness: It would have been interesting to see the interface
  196. (08:23:14 AM) Fireflower: think the yes option was to play
  197. (08:23:48 AM) Syd: I think he'll have to play again soon after he does a few things, so he could try it again then
  198. (08:24:07 AM) Fireflower: i'm stuck...
  199. (08:24:17 AM) Syd: Guide says to go to your room and call for backup
  200. (08:24:24 AM) Fireflower: yeah
  201. (08:24:27 AM) Syd: I'm looking at this http://www.sierrahelp.com/Walkthroughs/PQ1VGAWalkthrough.html
  202. (08:24:41 AM) GameClubFan_621124 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).

  211. (08:26:29 AM) Fireflower: :)
  212. (08:32:26 AM) Fireflower: play?
  213. (08:32:34 AM) Syd: Give it a try
  214. (08:32:39 AM) Josh_Mandel [4a462c71@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  215. (08:32:47 AM) Syd: Hey Josh_Mandel!
  216. (08:32:49 AM) Fireflower: ?
  217. (08:32:53 AM) Syd: Oh, did it crash?
  218. (08:32:57 AM) Syd: How weird

  220. (08:33:07 AM) Cheeseness: >_<
  221. (08:33:10 AM) Syd: Guess that made dosbox grumpy
  222. (08:33:12 AM) Cheeseness: Hey Josh_Mandel
  223. (08:33:18 AM) Josh_Mandel: Sorry...we're in crunch mode, my days are as packed as my nights. :-/
  224. (08:33:23 AM) Fireflower: hey Josh
  225. (08:33:29 AM) Josh_Mandel: G'day, all
  226. (08:33:52 AM) Josh_Mandel: I can't stay, I just dropped in to say hey and answer any questions.
  227. (08:33:53 AM) Fireflower: guess no play then
  228. (08:34:20 AM) Syd: Josh, could you actually play poker in this? Fireflower tried, but dosbox crashed when he hit "Yes!"
  229. (08:34:39 AM) Josh_Mandel: Yes, you definitely could.
  230. (08:34:53 AM) Fireflower: should it try again?
  231. (08:34:53 AM) Syd: Ooh, interesting
  232. (08:35:08 AM) Syd: If you want
  233. (08:35:08 AM) Fireflower: *I
  234. (08:35:21 AM) Fireflower: :)
  235. (08:35:30 AM) Syd: Oh, there we go, it works this time.
  236. (08:35:42 AM) Josh_Mandel: We had handy plug-in modules for things like poker, slot machines, and so on...developed for various games and then passed around (Hoyle's, PQ, LSL, etc.)
  237. (08:35:55 AM) Cheeseness: I was about to ask about that :)
  238. (08:36:09 AM) Cheeseness: Was this in the original PQ1 as well?
  239. (08:36:25 AM) Josh_Mandel: Good question...I don't remember, but I bet it was.
  240. (08:36:43 AM) Fireflower: any poker sharks in the chat?
  241. (08:37:01 AM) deathride58: Call Call Call Call Call Check Call
  242. (08:37:05 AM) deathride58: 'Nuff said
  243. (08:37:12 AM) Syd: I can barely play poker at all. I've never been very good with it.

  245. (08:37:15 AM) Cheeseness: I play a little bit of Poker Night At The Inventory :D

  247. (08:37:31 AM) deathride58: Same
  248. (08:37:47 AM) Cheeseness: Just treat it like a beat-em-up. Flail wildly and mash all the buttons. You'll hit something eventually.
  249. (08:37:48 AM) Syd: The AI beats me pretty often in that. :P
  250. (08:37:54 AM) Cheeseness: Syd: Same here >_<
  251. (08:38:02 AM) Cheeseness: I'm still hunting the last achievement
  252. (08:38:11 AM) deathride58: I mainly done it for the TF2 items... And ended up having to reset the game's save data for achievements
  253. (08:40:09 AM) Josh_Mandel: I believe Frank above is Robert Fisher, who was one of the company's main IT guys.
  254. (08:40:32 AM) Cheeseness: Awesome
  255. (08:41:15 AM) Cheeseness: How did you guys go about developing the imagery for the people in the remake? Did you scan and process photos?
  256. (08:42:19 AM) Josh_Mandel: Yes, exactly. I think we did this first for "Jones in the Fast Lane," and then expanded it to lots of other games (such as the PQ1 remake and KQ6).
  257. (08:42:29 AM) Fireflower: damn it :)
  258. (08:43:57 AM) Cheeseness: From what you've said, it sounds like Sierra staff were the primary source for that. How did people feel about getting their faces into the games?
  259. (08:44:20 AM) Fireflower: win :)
  260. (08:44:48 AM) Josh_Mandel: Some of them loved it, some didn't want to be in the games at ALL, and many were pretty indifferent. Which surprised me, because I always thought it was quite an honor.
  261. (08:45:08 AM) Josh_Mandel: Robert Fisher was also the inspiration for the box cover, so he was made to look "extra evil," which I think he kind of enjoyed.
  262. (08:45:18 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  263. (08:45:50 AM) Cheeseness: Man, I could go some chips about now
  264. (08:46:45 AM) Cheeseness: It's interesting. I'd have expected that there wouldn't be anybody who didn't have a strong opinion one way or the other about being in one of the company's games
  265. (08:48:00 AM) Cheeseness: How much do we have to win? Do we have to win? (I got distracted for a bit)
  266. (08:48:06 AM) Fireflower: dunno
  267. (08:48:22 AM) Josh_Mandel: Well, you have to bear in mind that a lot of employees weren't there because it was Sierra per se, but because Sierra happened to be the largest (or second-largest) employer for an hour in any direction. There were a lot of plain ol' mountain people at the company, people who weren't at all interested in computer games per se.
  268. (08:48:22 AM) Cheeseness: Or are we just biding time until backup arrives
  269. (08:48:42 AM) Cheeseness: Josh_Mandel: Ah, that's true. You mentioned that last week
  270. (08:49:13 AM) Syd: Those people might not have realized the impact these games were going to make
  271. (08:49:20 AM) Josh_Mandel: Yeah, I thought so, but I wasn't sure. There are a lot of interviews going on because of Larry, and I can't always remember what I told whom. :-/
  272. (08:49:47 AM) Josh_Mandel: They may well not have realized that, yes. Or they might not have cared. A lot of them thought us "creative types" were pretty weird.
  273. (08:50:32 AM) Josh_Mandel: Did I tell you how conservative Oakhurst was?
  274. (08:50:50 AM) Cheeseness: From a gamer's perspective, it's hard to imagine that there were people who were making awesome stuff who weren't all that invested in it.
  275. (08:50:58 AM) Josh_Mandel: I know!!
  276. (08:51:50 AM) Cheeseness: I wonder if that enriched or detracted from the development of the titles. People who are a little more distanced might have some interesting perspectives and insights
  277. (08:52:21 AM) Fireflower: how do i beat this game Josh? :)
  278. (08:52:35 AM) Josh_Mandel: :-( I don't remember! I bet it's based on how much you win.
  279. (08:52:52 AM) Josh_Mandel: Then again, it could be a timer. I could check.
  280. (08:53:10 AM) Syd: Maybe the other guys need to run out of money, but that could take a while.
  281. (08:53:33 AM) Cheeseness: "Sit down on the unoccupied chair and play until they get bored."
  282. (08:53:44 AM) Josh_Mandel: The people who worked at the company simply because it was local rarely ended up in the game development area. They were more likely to be found in QA, customer service, or production.
  283. (08:54:26 AM) Cheeseness: They'd still have some sort of impact on general climate/culture though, I'd expect
  284. (08:54:27 AM) Josh_Mandel: For game development, they either wanted people who'd risen up in the ranks from other jobs (like Al Lowe and Scott Murphy), or who were brought in because of specific talents (like art or composing).
  285. (08:55:59 AM) deathride58 left the room (quit: Quit: Derp).
  286. (08:56:30 AM) Josh_Mandel: I suppose, but it would be really hard to pin down.
  287. (08:57:12 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah
  288. (08:58:17 AM) Cheeseness: This sequence is proving to be surprisingly long
  289. (08:58:23 AM) Josh_Mandel: If anything, they would've quashed enthusiasm. When you're working round the clock to make something you're proud of, and people around you drop in and communicate that they couldn't care less about the product, it's depressing.
  290. (08:58:31 AM) Cheeseness: That's true
  291. (08:59:31 AM) Cheeseness: Fireflower: You've got a lot of chips. Don't be afraid to bluff your way out of a weak hand from time to time :D
  292. (08:59:43 AM) Fireflower: yeah :)
  293. (09:00:11 AM) Josh_Mandel: I need to pop back to work. Sorry. :-( Thanks, everyone!
  294. (09:00:21 AM) Cheeseness: No worries. Thanks again for joining us!
  295. (09:00:33 AM) Cheeseness: Best of luck with Larry and Fester Mudd :)
  296. (09:00:45 AM) Josh_Mandel: My pleasure! And thank you, Cheeseness!
  297. (09:00:45 AM) Syd: Thanks for coming, Josh
  298. (09:01:00 AM) Josh_Mandel: (BTW, I have put at least a couple of references to PQ in the new Larry. ;-) )
  299. (09:01:06 AM) Josh_Mandel: Bye!
  300. (09:01:08 AM) Josh_Mandel left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  301. (09:01:43 AM) Syd: A bit hard to tell how long this game will go when there's no clear win scenario.
  302. (09:01:55 AM) Cheeseness: I guess undercover work is like that thoguh
  303. (09:02:01 AM) Fireflower: nice :)
  304. (09:02:25 AM) Cheeseness: lol, I still can't get over "Whitey"
  305. (09:02:36 AM) Syd: Heh
  306. (09:03:14 AM) Fireflower: Jesse Bains
  307. (09:03:29 AM) Cheeseness: Use your sonic screwdriver on him
  308. (09:04:39 AM) Cheeseness: I would have thought we'd have had an audio cue when the phone rang
  309. (09:05:34 AM) Cheeseness: Did he have a gun?
  310. (09:05:34 AM) Syd: Backup made it just in time.
  311. (09:05:59 AM) Fireflower: dunno
  312. (09:06:02 AM) Fireflower: didnt see one
  313. (09:06:40 AM) Syd: I assume he did
  314. (09:06:45 AM) Cheeseness: Since they all assume that he was about to shoot you, I guess he did
  315. (09:07:18 AM) Fireflower: Jesse Bains will be back :)
  316. (09:08:00 AM) Cheeseness: Ha
  317. (09:08:28 AM) Cheeseness: A happy ending for Sonny Bonds?
  318. (09:08:39 AM) Syd: Looks like it
  319. (09:08:52 AM) Fireflower: yep
  320. (09:09:04 AM) Cheeseness: ha, so the reason I didn't hear the phone ring for Jesse before was because I didn't have my headphones on >_<
  321. (09:09:16 AM) Cheeseness: So, what did everybody think of Police Quest 1?
  322. (09:09:33 AM) Schmuppes: looked interesting
  323. (09:09:51 AM) Syd: It looked good. I'll have to add the Police Quest series to the list of games I should try.
  324. (09:09:54 AM) Schmuppes: but the controls seemed kinda complicated
  325. (09:10:03 AM) Schmuppes: not only in the car
  326. (09:10:22 AM) Fireflower: there's Josh :)
  327. (09:10:46 AM) swordfischer: Not being an adventure-ry kinda of guy - it is not something I'd play (lack of patience), but I do enjoy watching someone play it. Also nice to see a game where you actually have to pay attention to what you are doing :)
  328. (09:10:59 AM) Cheeseness: I find it a testament to the emerging potential of games that people were engaged by and could learn from the original non-VGA version (according to its Wikipedia page, it was used as a training supplement for police officers, allowing them to explore some of the risks involved with police life in a safe way)
  329. (09:11:35 AM) Syd: Interesting
  330. (09:11:50 AM) Syd left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  331. (09:12:02 AM) Syd [ae35447c@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  332. (09:12:19 AM) Syd: Accidentally closed the tab I had the chat on. :P
  333. (09:12:28 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  334. (09:12:35 AM) Cheeseness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_Quest:_In_Pursuit_of_the_Death_Angel
  335. (09:12:40 AM) Cheeseness: That's the page by the way
  336. (09:12:44 AM) jfrisby left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
  337. (09:12:49 AM) Cheeseness: bye jfrisby
  338. (09:12:51 AM) Cheeseness: :b
  339. (09:13:21 AM) Syd: I can definitely see how it could be used as an educational tool for officers, since it does make you follow police procedure.
  340. (09:13:31 AM) Fireflower: Schmuppes, the controls isn't that complicated
  341. (09:13:32 AM) Cheeseness: "Police Quest has proven to be a practical, effective training tool officers enjoy using. It safely demonstrates to rookies the consequences of failing to observe proper police procedures and can serve as a valuable refresher course for experienced officers."
  342. (09:13:58 AM) Cheeseness: Fireflower: Did you check whether there were verb hotkeys?
  343. (09:14:13 AM) Cheeseness: I still think the cycling verb interface is cumbersome
  344. (09:14:14 AM) Fireflower: yeah, couldn't find any
  345. (09:14:38 AM) Fireflower: nothing in the manual about it
  346. (09:14:56 AM) Cheeseness: The forum thread for PQ1 is here if people want to continue discussing after we're done here: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/8322/P0/
  347. (09:15:45 AM) Cheeseness: We've also still got a survey running asking for feedback on the first year of Game Club: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/8355/
  348. (09:16:01 AM) Syd: Hotkeys would have been a nice addition to the game. Sam and Max had them, though I didn't use them often (mostly just used the hotkey for walk, didn't bother with most of the others).
  349. (09:16:02 AM) Cheeseness: I'll be closing the survey off at the end of the month and sharing the results
