 = He wanted to leave it. I opened the door and permitted it.
I helped my dog (to) go down the stairs.
 = He wanted to, but it was difficult. I made it easier.

My dog makes me laugh.
 = He causes me to laugh. I don't choose.

 = I didn't do the laundry, because I didn't want to.

My dad didn't MAKE me do the laundry. (stressed "make")
 = I did the laundry. He didn't have to force me because I enjoy it.

My dad didn't let me take the car. (normal intonation)
 = I didn't take the car, because he didn't permit me.

My dad didn't LET me take the car, he made me.
 = I took the car, but I didn't want to.

My dad didn't help me do my homework.
 = I probably did my homework without help.
