- “savings”, to mean the money you’ve saved for later, is always plural

- borrow = receive temporarily (or take)
- lend = give temporarily (“loan” is specifically if it’s money, especially from the bank)
- mortgage (silent ‘t’) = a bank loan to buy property (especially a house)
- ---

- Grammar: noun phrases (articles and other determiners)
- Why are these articles used in sentences 1-4?
- the world - There’s only one world (so the speaker and listener both know which one).
- (no article) banks - Banks in general (not any specific banks).
- the interactive voice system - We both know which system, because it was already mentioned.
- a new cell phone banking plan - This is the first time it’s mentioned, so the listener/reader doesn’t know which one (yet).
- ---
- “the” = Speaker and listener know which one(s) the sentence is about.
- “a/an/some/-” = At least one of the speaker or listener doesn’t know which one(s).
- a - the next word starts with a consonant sound: a computer, a unique person, a one-way street, a USB
- an - the next word starts with a vowel sound: an apple, an mp3, an hour
- ---
- Everyone needs to pay attention to this, especially you. = you in particular need to pay attention
- This was specially prepared for you. = prepared in a special way.
- ---
- Articles are one type of determiner.
- Other determiners include:
- - possessives: my, your, Greg’s, the students’
- - demonstratives: this, that, these, those
- - quantifiers: some, many, a few, all, each, every
- Important: “each” and “every” are singular, “all” is plural (and noncount)
- each person is, every student is, each day happens, every store closes
- all people are, all students are, all stores close, all money is good
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- p. 107 part 10 - Read the tips for saving money and choose the correct determiner (or ‘-’ if nothing is needed). Then discuss with your partner whether you think the suggestions are good and whether you follow them.
- 1 a
- 2 your, a
- 3 the (We use “the” for things like supermarkets and banks, with the understanding that it’s the one you usually go to.)
- 4 their
- 5 your
- 6 -, an
- 7 all
- 8 each
- ---
- Grammar: passive voice
- active: This school teaches au pairs.
- passive: Au pairs are taught by this school.

- active: Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.
- passive: The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
- active: We sell phone cards here.
- passive: Phone cards are sold here.
- active: They’ve canceled my flight. (I don’t know or care who “they” are.)
- passive: My flight has been canceled.
- ---
- A new bridge is being built next to my house.
- “is” is necessary for continuous
- “being” is necessary for passive
- “by” + agent - necessary if this gives new or important information
- ---
- We use passive voice when the focus is on the receiver of the action, NOT on the agent (“doer”).
- ---
- p. 109 - Complete the sentences with the correct passive form of each verb. (They’re all passive, but you need to choose the right tense.)

- ---
- Homework: write an online ad to sell the thing you tried to sell in class today. (Imagine you're trying to sell it on Facebook, for example.) There’s an example ebay ad on 113. Include all the information in part 1.
