Noun clauses:
A noun clause is a clause (includes subject and verb) which functions as a noun in a sentence.
(i.e. it can be the subject of a sentence, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition)

Indirect speech:
She said words.
direct: She said, "I am sick today."
indirect: She said (that) she was sick that day.

(We change the tense if we don't believe it is still true now.)

John told Mary, "I can help you with this tomorrow."
John told Mary that he could help her with that the next day. (the following day)

The reporter said, "It has been raining here for three days straight."
The reporter said that it had been raining there for three days straight.

My mother said, "We had known each other for three years when we got married."
My mother said that they had known each other for three years when they got married.

He said, "I would like to visit France."
He said that he would like to visit France.
