  1. In this article, I’ll be debunking different authoritarian arguments and myths. Without further ado, let’s debunk some myths.
  2. The process of democracy is too lengthy to be efficient
  3. With the notable exception is the United States where the presidential election season can last up to two years, in most nations, even the most important election seasons, like the presidential election and parliamentary election seasons last a few weeks or months. Unless the governemt needs something to be decided right away, they can wait a few weeks to hold an election.
  4. In some cases, these lengthy election cycles can be a good thing. If it is an election for, let’s say, president, then, during the election season, people can find out all about the candidates - their views, their history, their arguments, etc. It is often difficult to find out all this info about all of the candidates, and it is even harder to squeeze in debates and press conferences. While these long election seasons can become tiresome, they do have a plus side. These elections decide the faith of the next few years of the nation, so it isn’t too bad that these election cycles last, seemingly, an eternity.

During these year long election cycles, people get to know everything about every candidate.
  6. Many people don’t even really understand what they’re voting for, so we should let politicians and the governemt, informed individuals, decide everything
  7. While there definitely are people that have no idea what they’re voting for, they’re a small minority, and very often if someone has no idea what the vote is on, they will simply not vote. Even if 10% of voters had no idea what the election was about, that would mean that a lot of people, and many people that have done research on the issue don’t get to vote just because a few people are lazy?
  8. With direct democracy, I can understand where authoritarians are coming from. Some issues can really only be understood by politicians that have studied economics and politics for years. There are some things that need to be decided right away, as well, so when you set up the election, inform the citizens that this election is taking place, etc, it will be too late. But there are many issues, like the Brexit vote, where input from the citizens is needed.
  9. However, with representative democracy, it nearly always is a horrible idea to let the governemt decide instead of letting the citizens vote on who gets in.
  10. Very many politicians are corrupt. A person who wishes to get into, for instance, the parliament, would have to bribe a couple hundread, often even less people to vote for him or to get him into parliament. However, if it was a vote by the citizens, it would be quite difficult to bribe hundreads of thousands, maybe even millions of people. If the citizens vote, you need ideas that the citizens actually want. If the citizens vote in members of parliament or other powerful people, it is much more likely that these people will be mainly for the people, not corporations or oligarchs.
  11. High taxes are a good thing
  12. To debunk this argument, we need to look into the reasons governments even tax their citizens. Most governemts have different projects they need to fund, like health care, the military, etc, do they turn to taxes. However, most of these projects are useless, like healthcare. The main thing the goverment should fund through taxes is the military, as it actually benefits society. Against or for war, you have to admit that the military is great.
  13. The only time when high taxes are acceptable is when the governemt needs a lot of money as soon as possible. Taking loans is a bad idea. Don’t believe me? Greece. So the government should temporarily raises taxes so they could get the money they need.
  14. However, citizens should get informed jthat taxes will get raised so that there are no misunderstandings, or if a person doesn’t know he’ll have to pay more a certain month anf he isn’t able to pay. These kind of situations can be avoided by telling citizens in advance.
  15.
  16. While there definitely are some great authoritarian ideas, most libertarian ideals are, in my opinion, superior.
