The head of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Research Institute as well as Google fellow, Professor Sebastian Thrun, has resigned from Stanford University in order to devote himself to teaching using the online education platform, Udacity. (According to I PROGRAMMER Article, Slashdot)

Udacity は、高品質・低コストで大学レベルの教育を提供することを目的としてインターネット上で講義を提供するベンチャー企業である。Thrun 教授がスタンフォード大学で昨年「人工知能入門」のオンライン授業を開講したところ、190 カ国から 16 万人の生徒が参加したという。「教育の力を知ってしまった今、もう引き返せない。従来型の教室で 200 人の生徒だけを教えることなんてもうできない」とのこと。

Udacity is a venture business offering lectures over the internet.  It aims to offer high quality college level education at a low cost.  Last year, Professor Thrun held a series "Introductory Artificial Intelligence" lectures online at Stanford.  From 190 different countries, 160,000 students participated.  In his own words, "Now understanding the educational power, I can't go back.  I can no longer teach lecture halls of 200 students like I used to."
