- As you guys know (because I kept reminding you), 10 months ago I made a really accurate prediction of the existence of this game and its premise.
- Maybe I was just extremely lucky, but I like to think that I analyzed the situation of the genre, including what's under the surface, and came to a conclusion that a game like this will be made.
- Now, using the same criteria I'm also going to predict that the game will be bigger than you think. A LOT BIGGER, not just in Japan but in western scenes as well.
- If you haven't noticed, the fighting game genre in currently at a chaotic phase, because of the boom in popularity and the attempts to cater to new crowds. Yeah, tons of games, but the quality is all over the place.
- Most of you veterans out there that play a modern game, know deep down inside that it's a bit of a compromise. Is this modern game good? The answer "yes" pops in your mind right away. Is this the peak of what you played in the last 10 years? Is this the best the genre has offered so far? Suddenly that "yes" doesn't pop in your mind.
- You'd think video games will be constantly improving, but when you think about it you can see that we are not going forward but in somewhat random directions. Sideways? A bit backwards, maybe?
- That's the chaos I am talking about.
- In all this chaos came KOF13 with a very simple premise of STABILITY AND SOLIDNESS: "We are not going to revolutionize the series, but seeing everyone around us going crazy, we'll just offer you the thing that brought you to the genre in the 1st place. A 'good ole fighting game' like back in the day when shit still made sense." And that is the main reason why, a series almost no one cared about suddenly became relevant- Being used as a sole shelter from the chaos.
- Now as much as I shit on Capcom, Arcsys had their own share of chaos lately. Blazblue and Persona can be fun and all, but for veteran players they cannot replace "the real thing". Guilty Gear R will take KOF13's place as the new shelter that caters to veterans. But its effect may be way bigger than KOF13.
- That's because Guilty Gear has something KOF doesn't have- The brand and whatever comes with it.
- What Street Fighter is to fighting games in general, Guilty Gear is to anime air dash fighting games. It is the KING, the 1st name that pops in your head. And over the years it has earned a reputation of being super fun/awesome and uncompromisingly complex at the same time.
- Which is why GG managed to be the overall most successful anime FG franchise outside of Japan, and now combined with the "shelter" thing, it's going to bring back a lot of old heads who are sick of compromising, old heads who did compromise but will not pass on a BRAND NEW VERSION of their favorite, and also lure in many new ones who only heard the tales of that legendary game everyone are praising and want a little taste of the good ole days themselves...
- So in summary what I think will happen: Guilty Gear comes out in Japan and gets the "near Gundam and Tekken" spot in Arcadia chart.
- In the rest of the world it's going to be once again the most successful anime FG, and will probably be more successful than (going by EVO games) KOF13, SC5 and maybe maybe even MK9.
- You heard it here 1st :)
