  2. [2011-04-26 17::15:34] Henri_DEllaine: is Mia a magical girl now?
  3. [2011-04-26 17::16:32] Blast: Mia has always been a magical girl
  4. [2011-04-26 17::16:51] Doink: that depends on your definition of "magical"
  5. [2011-04-26 17::16:54] Doink: and, well, "girl"
  6.

  8.
  9. [2011-04-26 17::44:00] Doink: [DATE: MARCH 23rd, 2016]
  10. [2011-04-26 17::48:43] Doink: The call comes unexpectedly, early in the morning, just as the sun begins to rise above the hills.
  11. [2011-04-26 17::49:03] Doink: A priority call, requesting your attention in the command bunker.
  12. [2011-04-26 17::51:43] Dmitriy_Platonov: answers the call, still lying in his bed, but after the first lines he is already dressing up. After hanging up, he allows himself a little Russian swear word.
  13. [2011-04-26 17::52:04] Dmitriy_Platonov: follows to the bunker, expecting worst things possible, as always.
  14. [2011-04-26 17::52:10] Doink: [LOCATION: NERV COMMAND BUNKER, UNDERNEATH ARKHAM, MASS.]
  15. [2011-04-26 17::52:24] Doink: You are greeted with a strange sight inside.
  16. [2011-04-26 17::54:06] Doink: Subcommander Reeds is sitting in a chair against the wall below the commander's seat, down on the floor. Besides the techs usually present on the bridge, there are also a small group of white-coated Science members, the head of which bearing some kind of leadership insignia on his arm. They seem very nervous under Reeds' carefully neutral gaze.
  17. [2011-04-26 17::54:59] Doink: "Director," he says, not turning his gaze away as you enter. "We've got a bit of a situation on our hands."
  18. [2011-04-26 17::55:21] Dmitriy_Platonov: "Greetings. I expected that. What exactly is going on?"
  19. [2011-04-26 17::57:51] Doink: "Well." Reeds points at the lead scientist. "Explain things to the Director here."
  20. [2011-04-26 18::03:35] Doink: The lead scientist clears his throat as he steps forward. "Ahem. Well. Last night there was an Nth-phase disruption within the containment field of Subject C1—er, the core retrieved in the recent mission, Sir. Although the usual precautions against such anomalies failed, measures were taken to... placate the subject and it has since reverted to dormanc—"
  21. [2011-04-26 18::05:17] Doink: "What you MEAN to say," Reeds interrupts, "is that your prisoner strung up a bunch of your boys like meat-puppets, and since you couldn't stop it you sent a PILOT in with it because it ASKED you to." There's a cold fury behind his level tone and expression.
  22. [2011-04-26 18::05:42] Doink: Reeds: "And all this without even once contacting the normal chain of command that a dangerous event was happening right in the middle of base."
  23. [2011-04-26 18::07:06] Dmitriy_Platonov: "You abided the request of that thing?" - Dmitriy looks at the lead scientist with a fierce disdain. - "This is either stupidity or treachery. Or I am not aware of something yet. In such a case, fix it immediately."
  24. [2011-04-26 18::08:42] Doink: "But it was fixed!" the lead scientist replies, with rapidly declining defiance.
  25. [2011-04-26 18::09:51] Doink: Reeds: "It should have been fixed by irradiating the entire sector. That's protocol."
  26. [2011-04-26 18::10:11] Dmitriy_Platonov: "How are we all still alive and sane and what exactly happened?"
  27. [2011-04-26 18::11:48] Doink: Lead Scientist: "Erm... Prototy—er, Mia Al-Misiri made contact with the core, as per it's request, and it immediately went dormant again. She was then escorted back to Ward hall."
  28. [2011-04-26 18::11:56] Doink: His confidence, it seems, is rapidly waning.
  29. [2011-04-26 18::15:13] Dmitriy_Platonov: "You. Let. Mia. Visit. It." - Dmitriy exhales forcefully, as if stopping himself from cursing. - "I... Just tell me why. I really want to know your reasons to do such a thing. And yes, proceed with details of the incident. I don't believe that they just stared at each other silently. I know Mia."
  30. [2011-04-26 18::19:03] Doink: Lead Scientist: "I...err...we... we had instructions." He hangs his head. "From Dr. Al-Misiri. All matters involving Subject C1 were to be reported directly to him and him only. All usual... protocol was to be suspended."
  31. [2011-04-26 18::19:43] Dmitriy_Platonov: "Was that his order?"
  32. [2011-04-26 18::20:54] Doink: Lead Scientist: "W-well, we had drawn up plans for a contact test between C1 and O12—er, Mia—already, although they weren't supposed to occur for another few weeks, and with him gone we couldn't ask particular permission so we kind of..." He gulps. "Panicked. We knew that he would be unable to encroach her through the barrier so we figured it couldn't hurt..."
  33. [2011-04-26 18::24:47] Dmitriy_Platonov: "My pilots are more disciplined and brave. And they are children." - Dmitriy sighs. - "You still haven't told me, what exactly happened there. I remember some talk about posession. About it making a request. So how did it happen?"
  34. [2011-04-26 18::27:09] Doink: Lead Scientist: "... at oh-onehundred hours last night, we detected anomalous activity from within C1's containment field. Upon sending in a team to investigate, it was discovered that... certain attributes of the core were not adequately contained. Subsequently all members of the investigation team were... encroached."
  35. [2011-04-26 18::28:41] Doink: Lead Scientist: "Subject C1 proceeded to... manipulate the bodies of the team until it presumably processed enough information from them to be able to speak through one of them. And... it requested to speak with Mia in particular."
  36. [2011-04-26 18::29:28] Doink: Lead Scientist: "Further containment teams were dispatched, but... the bodies which had been encroached... dismembered them."
  37. [2011-04-26 18::29:36] Doink: He's visibly shaking now.
  38. [2011-04-26 18::30:33] Dmitriy_Platonov: "What happened after that?" - Dmitriy has calmed down a little. Morbid situation reports are normal things.
  39. [2011-04-26 18::32:07] Doink: The Lead Scientist hesitates. "I'm... not sure I'm authorized to speak on this. This is a..."
  40. [2011-04-26 18::33:21] Doink: "You are authorized," says Reeds, "to answer the Director's questions. The Commander is not here, and neither is your Boss. Which means refusing this order will get you thrown into the LOWEST levels of S2 faster than you can say 'directly disobeying a superior officer.'"
  41. [2011-04-26 18::34:11] Dmitriy_Platonov: nods after Reeds' words. "If this is confidential, we can indeed move into a proper interrogation room."
  42. [2011-04-26 18::34:51] Doink: The Lead Scientist gulps. "...N-no sir." He motions to Lt. Jackson. "Please put the readings we received on-screen."
  43. [2011-04-26 18::36:15] Doink: Lt. Jackson hits a key and brings up a familiar looking wave-pattern on the holoscreen above the bridge. It's a standard pattern-blue signature.
  44. [2011-04-26 18::37:04] Doink: Scientist: "Here's the signature we received from the core. A standard pattern-blue signature, within the guidelines we'd set into the detection system to account for its presence in the base."
  45. [2011-04-26 18::40:01] Doink: Scientist: "After Mia entered the chamber, she... conversed with C1 through one of its... interpreters for several minutes. I'm afraid that the recording equipment brought into the room was sabotaged by C1 as soon as he gained motor control of the... bodies, and there are no external lines running in or out of the containment room, so we don't know exactly what they... conversed about, if anything at all."
  46. [2011-04-26 18::40:38] Doink: Scientist: "Then..." He nods at Lt. Jackson, who hits another key.
  47. [2011-04-26 18::41:58] Doink: The wave-form seems to go haywire, losing all semblance of a wave and instead looking like a jumbled line, spiking and climbing and growing closer and closer together until appearing as a solid line—
  48. [2011-04-26 18::42:02] Doink: then returning to normal.
  49. [2011-04-26 18::43:18] Dmitriy_Platonov: "Explain this. In layman's terms, please."
  50. [2011-04-26 18::43:45] Doink: Scientist: "That is... difficult."
  51. [2011-04-26 18::44:12] Doink: Scientist: "Um, when we returned to the chamber, the core was again dormant, and Mia was led willingly back to her room. Except..."
  52. [2011-04-26 18::44:33] Dmitriy_Platonov: waits.
  53. [2011-04-26 18::45:10] Doink: Scientist: "Well, the containment field was basically an artificial AT field. We managed to get a scrapped Eva core—a failed test—to hold a field without the use of a synced subject. It couldn't do much, but it could hold in a weakened core."
  54. [2011-04-26 18::45:46] Doink: Scientist: "Except... after Mia left, we inspected the apparatus, and... there was no core."
  55. [2011-04-26 18::46:16] Doink: Scientist: "Er, Eva core, I mean. C1 is still there, and remains dormant despite the lack of a containment field."
  56. [2011-04-26 18::46:26] Doink: He's sweating.
  57. [2011-04-26 18::48:06] Dmitriy_Platonov: thinks for a while. "Do you have any hypothesis about the cause of that? Or should I go and talk with Mia already?"
  58. [2011-04-26 18::49:46] Doink: Scientist: "Umm.... it's likely that Mia manifested some sort of... well, call it an 'anti-at field'. It would explain the bizarre pattern we received, and the missing containment field."
  59. [2011-04-26 18::50:25] Doink: Scientist: "Other than that... we have no idea. C1 remains dormant, and hasn't communicated or shown any further hostile intent since communicating with Mia."
  60. [2011-04-26 18::51:03] Dmitriy_Platonov: "What happened to the members of the first investigation team?"
  61. [2011-04-26 18::52:22] Doink: Scientist: "Their bodies have been taken for dissection, of course. It's... unpleasant, but we have few chances to inspect the physical consequences of encroachment."
  62. [2011-04-26 18::54:12] Dmitriy_Platonov: "No survivors, no evidence... except for Mia. Great. Subcommander, when will Dr. Al-Misiri and the Commander arrive?"
  63. [2011-04-26 18::58:04] Doink: Reeds: "That... is another issue entirely. The Commander was called in for UN business. Something important, since they left yesterday as soon as word came in."
  64. [2011-04-26 18::59:15] Doink: Reeds: "No word on when they'll be back. The only thing the Commander ordered before he left was not to try and contact them through any non-secure channel. Which, right now, is just about every means short of talking to him in person."
  65. [2011-04-26 19::00:16] Doink: He stretches. "So it'll probably keep them held up a few days." He shrugs. "That's bureaucracy for you."
  66. [2011-04-26 19::02:13] Dmitriy_Platonov: "Hmmm. Worst timing possible, as always. Well, anyway, I think that it's up to Doctor to make a decision about the fate of his subordinates. They may be valuable, or useful as test subjects. I don't want to rob him of resources... though I admit, it's hard for me to not abuse our current moment of authority and just fire them."
  67. [2011-04-26 19::02:32] Dmitriy_Platonov: "I mean, put them to the firing squad." - Dmitriy smiles. - "What a slip."
  68. [2011-04-26 19::03:54] Doink: Reeds nods. "Shame, that. Well, we'll just put them under the usual psych evaluation and turn them back over to their own department, then."
  69. [2011-04-26 19::04:30] Dmitriy_Platonov: "Psych evaluation is much required, indeed."
  70. [2011-04-26 19::07:04] Doink: The Subcommander gets to his feet. As if on cue, a group of black-suited agents enter the room to escort the scientists out.
  71. [2011-04-26 19::07:28] Doink: He shakes his head. "Of all the rotten timing... what the hell are they up to down there, anyways?"
  72. [2011-04-26 19::10:38] Dmitriy_Platonov: leaves the room beside him. "What do you mean exactly? The UN or our own local... stuff?"
  73. [2011-04-26 19::14:47] Doink: He waves a hand dismissively. "Take your pick. The UN always has some problem with something we do, even though they've got no say in anything really, and those science guys... well, they've got they're whole huge complex down there, and who's in charge? Guys like that nervous wreck back there." He shakes his head. "WIsh the Commander would put more Section one or two guys down there, but the Doctor likes to hold everything personally, and, well, it seems work. Usually."
  74. [2011-04-26 19::17:06] » John_Kilanger left the chat room.
  75. [2011-04-26 19::21:15] Dmitriy_Platonov: sighs. "Science is like that. When I remember times when I was a civilian science specialist myself, I usually want to hit my old self. They think that they understand what they are doing, and everything goes fine, until something happens. And then we are ordered to perform a cleanup, or do something ridiculously dangerous.
  76. [2011-04-26 19::21:15] Dmitriy_Platonov: It would be hilarious if it didn't involve so much blood and mutual suspicion."
  77. [2011-04-26 19::23:52] Doink: nods. "At this point? I see an old looking book, I just burn it. Saves a hell of a lot of trouble." He chuckles. "Thats what people like you or the Commander are for, keeping things straight between the guys like me and the guys like the Doctor."
  78. [2011-04-26 19::24:00] Doink: *Reeds
  79. [2011-04-26 19::29:01] Dmitriy_Platonov: smiles. "Your position is the healthiest among us. It's comforting to know that there is a person able to... choose lesser evil, if a necessity arises."
  80. [2011-04-26 19::36:33] Doink: [SESSION END]
