- >Day Downpour in Equestria.
- >Looking up from your book, the same sight you saw five minutes ago meets you.
- >Hope is laying on the couch, looking out the window with a solemn expression as the raindrops continue to hit the window.
- >She was planning to go visit Manny today, but her plans got rained out.
- >From Lyra's told you, she's been like this since you left this morning.
- >You wanted to do something, anything, to get her out of this funk.
- >But your daughter just hated the rain so much.
- >Everything you offered to do was shot down.
- >Puzzle books, play with her legos, read together, even hot chocolate all got the same response.
- >'No thanks dad.'
- >She's only eight.
- >She shouldn't be this sad just because of a little rain.
- >Dammit all.
- >You refuse to let your daughter remain this way.
- >Putting the book down, you step behind the girl as she rests her chin on the back of the couch.
- >Extending your hands, you place them on her waist.
- >”Dad, what're y-”
- >Before she can respond, you unleash a barrage of tickles on the girl.
- >”Pff! D-Dad! St-stahahap! I-I don'ttttt waahahana laughHHHH!”
- >You continue this barrage until she is smiling wide, struggling against you on her back.
- >After a few more moments of torturous tickling, you show your little girl mercy.
- >She is still laughing as she recovers.
- >”W-heheh-why did you do that? Pffff.”
- “Because you were busy being sad. I hate to see you with a frown on your face.”
- >She smiles for a moment longer before her frown returns.
- >Damn, looks like that didn't do any good.
- >Taking a seat next to the girl, you pat your lap.
- >She sits on it and looks up at you as you place your hand on the back of your head.
- “What's the matter?”
- >She takes a long sigh before answering.
- >”I wanted to see Manny today.”
- >You brush your hand against the back of her head and smile.
- “Is that all? You can see him when the rain stops or on Monday.”
- >She lets off another sigh and places her hands in her lap.
- >”Yeah, but surrounded by ponies.”
- >That didn't sound pleasant.
- “Excuse me?”
- >She presses her head against your shoulder, looking down.
- >”I don't like ponies dad...”
- >You lift her head, making her look at you.
- >If Lyra heard this...
- “Why don't you like ponies?”
- >She looks on the verge of tears.
- >”Because they don't get it. They think I'm not one of them so they treat me different.”
- “Different how?”
- >She sniffles and rubs her nose.
- >”I always get more at lunch than the ponies, and I can't play hoofball since I can't run as fast, and I'm one of the only kids who has to wear a skirt AND a shirt.”
- >Oh...
- >Ohhhhh.
- >She thinks that because of the situation with her school accommodations that ALL ponies treat her differently.
- >How to explain this...
- “Hope... that's not them treating you different, that's them treating you like a human.”
- >She sniffles some more.
- >”But why are humans treated differently?”
- “Because we have different needs.”
- >She seems to be calming down a bit.
- >”Why?”
- “Biology. We're taller and bigger, so he have to eat different amounts of food, run a little slower, and we have to wear clothes for both parts of our bodies.”
- >Your answer is clearly having an effect on her.
- >”So... I'm more human than pony... and they treat me like a human because of it?”
- “Well, kind of. It's more like human needs.”
- >”But you said-”
- “Yeah, I wasn't thinking right. They aren't treating you differently because they don't see you as a pony, it's because you have human needs.”
- >She is silent for a while, pressing her head against your chest as you hold her.
- >”... Can you tell me more about the human world?”
- “Earth? Sure. What do you want to know?”
- >She sighs and curls up, bringing her hooves to lie across your lap as her back is on your arm.
- >”You said humans ate meat back on Earth, but you never said why. Why would they k-k-... eat another animal?”
- >You expected this question to come up a long time ago and had a detailed answer ready for it.
- “They ate meat because ancient humans did. They didn't know any better, they just knew it was food. As for eating another animal, well, humans had this silly idea for a long time that they weren't animals so it was okay.”
- >She nods, waiting to hear more.
- “Besides, it actually helped us a lot. Because we ate meat, our brains grew bigger faster.”
- >”Huh? What do you mean grew bigger? Eating meat makes you smart?!?”
- >Whoops.
- >You forgot to explain evolution to her.
- >Going to have to drag the conversation back a bit.
- “Er, no. It made ancient humans' brains evolve faster.”
- >”Evolve?”
- >And so begins Anon's amateur Anthropology lesson.
- >Finished with the laundry, you empty the machine and bring the warm clothes to the front room to fold.
- >As you levitate the basket, you enter one of the most adorable sights you have seen.
- >Anon is holding Hope on his chest as they both nap on the couch.
- >Aaand he still has his shoes on.
- >You chuckle a bit as you carefully take hold of them with your magic to remove them.
- >With your husbands shoes on the ground, you take one of the blankets off of the basket and place it on your two little humans.
- >Afterwards, you plant a kiss on both their cheeks and whisper.
- “Sweet dream you two.”
- >You then begin to fold the laundry silently as your husband and daughter nap, holding each other protectively.
