  1. <Liliana60> oh yeah
  2. <Liliana60> yesterday on TV
  3. <Liliana60> I don't want to mention TV but this was just... dunno, pretty bad
  4. <Liliana60> basically they attempted to portray a girl with DID
  5. <Liliana60> I think you can imagine what that was like
  6. <RachelSnowmew> Please don't call it DID
  7. <RachelSnowmew> Ugh
  8. <Liliana60> why
  9. * SaturnAmy doesn't even know what that stands for
  10. <RachelSnowmew> Because it is overmedicalised and makes it sound like there is something wrong with being plural
  11. <Liliana60> hmm
  12. <Liliana60> well in any case they grossly overexaggerated everything
  13. <Liliana60> it was like
  14. <RachelSnowmew> Liliana60: FYI, we're plural if you didn't know
  15. <Liliana60> they said there was a car accident and everyone died except for that one young (around 20 yo) girl and so she assumed the identities of all her former family members
  16. <Liliana60> ah
  17. <RachelSnowmew> Allie and foxiepaws are the other members of the system
  18. <Liliana60> so it was like, she'd switch from being a little humble girl to an old pipe-smoking person over to a guy in puberty who likes hitting on girls
  19. <Liliana60> (especially the latter part oh gods)
  20. <RachelSnowmew> Sigh
  21. <Liliana60> ah, I didn't know that
  22. <Liliana60> but yeah that portrayal of her
  23. <Liliana60> also they said she broke out of the psych ward
  24. <Liliana60> as if plural people have to stay in a psych ward
  25. <Liliana60> but yeah that was typical TV representation of mental illnesses
  26. <Liliana60> well, "illness"
  27. <Liliana60> (I should kill myself for keeping offending people)
  28. <RachelSnowmew> ...
  29. <RachelSnowmew> Seriously?
  30. <RachelSnowmew> Don't say you should kill yourself.
  31. <RachelSnowmew> That's the wrong response
  32. <RachelSnowmew> If you say something and you get called out, the right response is to apologize and acknowledge what you did, and move on
  33. <Liliana60> I just keep doing it all the time because I have literally no social skills
  34. <Liliana60> that's how I managed to fail real life
  35. <RachelSnowmew> And that's why you listen and learn
  36. <RachelSnowmew> You don't start out fully aware of what's offensive or triggering. You have to learn it from people calling you out and telling you, as well as just generally learning
  37. <SaturnAmy> yeah
  38. <SaturnAmy> and standard language on neurodiversity is just
  39. <SaturnAmy> ....horrendous
  40. <RachelSnowmew> Yeah.
  41. <SaturnAmy> no one will blame you for making mistakes
  42. <SaturnAmy> we've all had to learn
  43. <RachelSnowmew> Remember: getting called out is us accepting that everyone makes mistakes, and that you can learn from yours. As well as acknowledgement that you didn't mean what you said/did
  44. <RachelSnowmew> If it was interpreted as you meant it? You would have just been kicked out like the trolls/reactionaries who've been here before
  45. <SaturnAmy> also
  46. <SaturnAmy> when a reaction is blunt, it's not because of you, but because of the language
  47. <RachelSnowmew> Social skills are something you learn... Something I'm still learning
  48. <Liliana60> I wonder how neurotypical people are born with social skills
  49. <RachelSnowmew> They aren't, they just pick them up faster
  50. <RachelSnowmew> Much much faster
  51.
  52. -2 hours later-
  53.
  54. <Liliana60> Wednesday will be fun, my endo's appointment is at the worst possible time, in the middle of rush hour
  55. <Liliana60> I'm seriously considering using my scooter again, I haven't used it in more than a year
  56. <Liliana60> but I might need it to squeeze through the cars
  57. <Liliana60> it's a very not girly thing to do p:
  58. <RachelSnowmew> sigh
  59. <Liliana60> oh yeah I was gonna leave anyway
  60. <Liliana60> no need to tell me to go away
  61. <RachelSnowmew> Liliana60: ?
  62. * Liliana60 has quit (Quit: Leaving)
