  1. (06:56:49) Cheeseness: Hey KhrisBrownDF :)
  2. (06:56:54) Syd: Hi KhrisBrownDF!
  3. (06:56:58) KhrisBrownDF: Hi!
  4. (06:57:11) Cheeseness: Welcome :)
  5. (06:57:20) KhrisBrownDF: Eeee thanks
  6. (06:57:21) Cheeseness: We're just mingling around before we start
  7. (06:57:23) lietu: hey beansmyname , Slade , KhrisBrownDF
  8. (06:57:25) Cheeseness: Super glad to have you along
  9. (06:57:37) Slade: Hey lietu
  10. (06:57:41) lietu: random thought of the hour: Windows 10 seems nice
  11. (06:57:44) Slade: Welcome KhrisBrownDF
  12. (06:58:11) KhrisBrownDF: Thanks everyone! Super grateful to have been asked. <3
  13. (06:58:14) Slade: I'm still waiting for more widespread linux support for games... but if they're going to give me 10 for free I can hold out a little longer
  14. (06:58:43) lietu: steam boxes are coming out this year, should make that support grow faster
  15. (06:58:48) Syd: Tim should be joining us later on. He said he'd be a bit late.
  16. (06:58:53) lietu: iirc it was october or so
  17. (06:58:58) Cheeseness: Yeah, we got word from Tim that he'll be 20 minutes late or so
  18. (06:59:04) Slade: Right. One can only hope
  19. (07:00:04) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: I wish we had've thought to reach out to you when we did The Cave
  20. (07:00:17) Cheeseness: Do you have any memories from that game that you'd like to share?
  21. (07:00:30) beansmyname: hey Cheeseness, lietu
  22. (07:01:04) KhrisBrownDF: Ron was very patient :)
  23. (07:01:05) Permafry_42 [Mibbit@hide-FA063A15.vc.shawcable.net] entered the room.
  24. (07:01:08) Syd: The voice of the Cave itself was the same person that voiced Sasha Nein in Psychonauts, right?
  25. (07:01:14) Permafry_42: Hey all!
  26. (07:01:17) Cheeseness: For such a "grumpy" guy, Ron is so nice
  27. (07:01:24) Cheeseness: Hey Permafry_42
  28. (07:01:39) BadAsp [Mibbit@hide-18FEE048.dhcp.oxfr.ma.charter.com] entered the room.
  29. (07:01:48) lietu: heyo Permafry_42
  30. (07:01:51) Syd: Hey Permafry_42 and BadAsp
  31. (07:02:00) BadAsp: Hey everyone
  32. (07:02:01) Slade: Hey Syd, Permafry_42
  33. (07:02:09) beansmyname: Hey Permafry_42
  34. (07:02:14) Cheeseness: Hey BadAsp
  35. (07:02:20) beansmyname: Hey Syd
  36. (07:02:23) Slade: Hey BadAsp. General Hey fest for everyone
  37. (07:02:36) beansmyname: are we quite done?
  38. (07:02:44) Syd: So many heys
  39. (07:02:50) beansmyname: purple heys
  40. (07:02:52) Slade: Nah, we're still horsin' around.
  41. (07:02:54) Cheeseness: Heh
  42. (07:03:05) Slade: Cause hay is for.... I'll show myself out.
  43. (07:03:08) KhrisBrownDF: Yes, it was Stephen Stanton. He was so fun as Sasha Nein - we laughed so much in the studio and it was all in person.
  44. (07:03:40) Permafry_42: just going to use the washroom quickly then we can begin =D
  45. (07:03:52) Cheeseness: No probs!
  46. (07:03:59) Slade: Oh man, I didn't even realize it but that sounds right
  47. (07:04:35) KhrisBrownDF: For The Cave, we recorded everything over Skype because I was temporarily in Ohio. We still laughed a lot of course - just like most recording sessions.
  48. (07:04:48) dscharrer [dscharrer@constexpr.org] entered the room.
  49. (07:04:49) Cheeseness: Were there quality issues that you had to address with that?
  50. (07:04:51) Cheeseness: Hey dscharrer
  51. (07:05:05) dscharrer: hi Cheese
  52. (07:05:16) Cheeseness: Or do you mean that you were directing them via Skype and they were in a studio?
  53. (07:05:24) Syd: I'm a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to voice acting, as Cheeseness can probably attest to
  54. (07:05:29) Cheeseness: :D
  55. (07:05:53) Syd: The documentary "I Know That Voice" is one of my favorite things
  56. (07:06:06) beansmyname: I <3 that documentary a lot.
  57. (07:06:11) KhrisBrownDF: That is awesome. John is super sweet.
  58. (07:06:31) KhrisBrownDF: re: Skype & quality, the actors are in the studio and I'm listening on a headset
  59. (07:06:40) Permafry_42: k i'm live!
  60. (07:06:54) Cheeseness: Ahh, got it
  61. (07:07:09) Syd: We're live!
  62. (07:07:10) Cheeseness: So, for anybody who hasn't clued in, KhrisBrownDF was voice director on Broken Age and helped the actors find the performances that are in the game
  63. (07:07:11) KhrisBrownDF: we used to sometimes do phone patches or use something called ISDN, but the quality of sound over Skype is great, so it works well. :)
  64. (07:07:25) Cheeseness: The stream should be up now. People can pause and play if they don't see it
  65. (07:07:34) BadAsp: Yay!
  66. (07:07:57) Cheeseness: It's amazing what technology can enable these days
  67. (07:08:17) lietu: dfgameclubtemp?
  68. (07:08:21) beansmyname: I want virtual hugs.
  69. (07:08:28) Cheeseness: lietu: Yep
  70. (07:08:41) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: At what point did you become involved with Broken Age, and what were your initial expectations about the work that it would involve?
  71. (07:08:49) Sven_Q45 [Mibbit@hide-1FD91941.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] entered the room.
  72. (07:08:53) GameClubFan_170755 [Mibbit@hide-72703479.resnet.wisc.edu] entered the room.
  73. (07:08:55) Cheeseness: Hey Sven_Q45
  74. (07:08:58) Amp [Mibbit@C264813D.33D194B4.7E808516.IP] entered the room.
  75. (07:09:00) Sven_Q45: hi
  76. (07:09:03) Cheeseness: Oh, it looks like we've got Oliver's low res filter on :D
  77. (07:09:07) Cheeseness: Hey Amp
  78. (07:09:10) BadAsp: Retro mode
  79. (07:09:12) Amp: Hey all
  80. (07:09:14) Permafry_42: figured we should enjoy the awesome retro mode provided by oliver for a little bit =D
  81. (07:09:19) BadAsp: Very nice
  82. (07:09:50) KhrisBrownDF: I had my first meeting with Tim about 3 months after we were funded. We generally meet when he has the main ideas and the main characters pretty well established.
  83. (07:10:25) KhrisBrownDF: the secondary and tertiary characters are things that I become familiar with when they're written into the script
  84. (07:10:36) Permafry_42: since we started with shay last time, lets start with vella this time =D
  85. (07:10:45) Sven_Q45: I like the beginning and ending of act 2!
  86. (07:11:14) KhrisBrownDF: This is so exciting - it's the first time I've seen the art!
  87. (07:11:19) Permafry_42: My main question for khris is how did you make cutlery the best characters in adventure gaming history?
  88. (07:11:20) BadAsp: "DEATH FROM ABOVE!"
  89. (07:11:27) BadAsp: That line still sounds cool
  90. (07:11:32) KhrisBrownDF: That's a Sam & Max joke.
  91. (07:11:40) BadAsp: I figured that
  92. (07:12:07) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Oh! If this is the first time you've seen it, keep in mind that Permafry_42 is a "retro mode" filter that Oliver Franzke popped in the game as an easter egg. The final art is a lot higher resolution and with more colours
  93. (07:12:20) KhrisBrownDF: Awwww, I love Nick Jameson. It's hilarious b/c he was the voice of the original Max. ;)
  94. (07:12:24) Syd: Retro mode is neat, though Twitch kind of chews it up with compression
  95. (07:12:26) KhrisBrownDF: Tim is the smartest
  96. (07:12:30) BadAsp: Was that the intent?
  97. (07:12:32) Cheeseness: :)
  98. (07:12:41) Cheeseness: Was this part written for him?
  99. (07:12:43) Sven_Q45: KhrisBrownDF Dito @ Nick Jameson.
  100. (07:12:45) KhrisBrownDF: I don't know if it was conscious
  101. (07:12:46) Cheeseness: I've always wondered
  102. (07:13:13) Cheeseness: I like the way he says "Shtab"
  103. (07:13:47) KhrisBrownDF: Tim is amazing because he's got like 10 brains working in the background of his regular brain and he'll write things and I'll ask, "Did you do that on purpose?," and he won't even realize.
  104. (07:13:52) Syd: Perma, think you could switch back to normal art? Twitch's compression doesn't like retro mode too much
  105. (07:14:03) Permafry_42: no worries syd
  106. (07:14:05) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: How much input did you have on casting?
  107. (07:14:10) KhrisBrownDF: But I think that he knows it on some level.
  108. (07:14:16) GameClubFan_721428 [Mibbit@hide-8EEB0A9A.vie.surfer.at] entered the room.
  109. (07:14:24) Cheeseness: (do you handle casting? I'm not sure where Voice Director starts and ends ^_^ )
  110. (07:14:29) Syd: And now we're back to normal art
  111. (07:14:32) lietu: I didn't really see any issue with video
  112. (07:14:44) KhrisBrownDF: I do all the casting, direction, and editorial for the main characters,
  113. (07:15:15) Cheeseness: How does the casting process work? Do you have a wishlist that you whittle down, or do you do open casting calls?
  114. (07:15:26) KhrisBrownDF: I used to do all the editorial (e.g. on everything from the original Sam & Max until Full Throttle)
  115. (07:16:18) KhrisBrownDF: but there's a guy named Paul at DF who I trust to trim all my selects, so he does a bunch of the trimming based on my selects.
  116. (07:16:41) beansmyname: Is there a voice actor you've not had in the studio that you'd like in a DF game?
  117. (07:16:51) GameClubFan_721428 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  118. (07:16:55) Permafry_42: Khris how did you cast the cuttlery?
  119. (07:17:44) KhrisBrownDF: For casting, I'll meet with Tim and ask him a million questions about the characters in order to get an idea of what he wants. Then I'll write the character descriptions and either write made-up audition dialog, or, if it's ready, use dialog Tim has written.
  120. (07:18:16) Cheeseness: saDo you ever use concept art to shape your impressions of the characters, or do you usually get a start on stuff before that's available?
  121. (07:18:47) KhrisBrownDF: I send out these descriptions to all the SAG-AFTRA agencies in Los Angeles and San Francisco and then get about 1250-600 auditions back.
  122. (07:18:57) TimOfLegend [Mibbit@37031216.7C25181F.D4E8D8B7.IP] entered the room.
  123. (07:18:58) Cheeseness: Wow
  124. (07:19:02) Cheeseness: Hey TimOfLegend :D
  125. (07:19:04) KhrisBrownDF: whoops - 250-600, not 1250
  126. (07:19:07) KhrisBrownDF: TIM
  127. (07:19:09) Permafry_42: The legend has arrived
  128. (07:19:15) Cheeseness: Ah, that's more humanly manageable, but still impressive!
  129. (07:19:21) BadAsp: Hey Tim!
  130. (07:19:24) Syd: Hi TimOfLegend!
  131. (07:19:40) Sven_Q45: Hi Tim
  132. (07:20:02) TimOfLegend: Hi everybody!!!
  133. (07:20:07) TimOfLegend: Wooo!
  134. (07:20:10) TimOfLegend: Hey, Khris!
  135. (07:20:29) KhrisBrownDF: Re: art: sometimes I'll have concept art, but for the secondary & tertiary characters, this is rare. Having art is the best! It really helps the actors and me understand how the characters should sound.
  136. (07:20:50) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Khris was just telling us about the casting process and how she gets a handle on characters
  137. (07:20:55) KhrisBrownDF: re: Cutlery, it was cast "on the fly" - we assigned the voices based on what we knew the actors could do.
  138. (07:21:10) TimOfLegend: I play all the parts myself. Did she mention that?
  139. (07:21:22) TimOfLegend: I'm like Mel Blanc. all the names in the credits are made up.
  140. (07:21:22) stanto [Mibbit@hide-B25C525D.cable.virginm.net] entered the room.
  141. (07:21:33) TimOfLegend: So may paychecks!
  142. (07:21:35) stanto left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  143. (07:21:35) lietu: I knew you were talented Tim, but .. that's amazing!
  144. (07:21:48) KhrisBrownDF: This is true. He also does all the art.
  145. (07:22:05) stanto [Mibbit@hide-B25C525D.cable.virginm.net] entered the room.
  146. (07:22:07) Cheeseness: And the programming
  147. (07:22:10) Cheeseness: Hi stanto
  148. (07:22:20) stanto: Hey hey
  149. (07:22:40) stanto: I just realised I haven't finished this act yet..
  150. (07:23:21) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Do you ever have voices in mind for characters when you write them?
  151. (07:23:32) Cheeseness: stanto: Ah! There are likely to be spoilers then
  152. (07:23:57) stanto: Mmm I'm stuck actually. Might just scroll down the page...
  153. (07:23:59) Tinche [Mibbit@hide-F565F3EA.zg.cable.xnet.hr] entered the room.
  154. (07:24:07) Cheeseness: Hey Tinche
  155. (07:24:10) Tinche: Hello!
  156. (07:24:29) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Do you have a favourite character and/or line in Broken Age?
  157. (07:24:40) stanto: I liked the touch of "are you me" in this
  158. (07:24:42) Permafry_42: tim what did you think about people thinking alex was a grown up version of shay?
  159. (07:25:20) Syd: That awkward moment when you mistake someone for your future self. We've all felt that, right?
  160. (07:25:25) GameClubFan_256520 [Mibbit@74D61E84.86854FDF.47E3F8C0.IP] entered the room.
  161. (07:25:26) GameClubFan_766167 [Mibbit@hide-E626923A.dynamic.isadsl.co.za] entered the room.
  162. (07:25:40) KhrisBrownDF: Gosh, I guess it's like having favorite children. I love them all so much.
  163. (07:25:42) Cheeseness: I love that there's the follow up on that joke with Shay's Dad
  164. (07:25:49) GameClubFan_766167 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  165. (07:26:08) KhrisBrownDF: Watching this makes me remember how much fun we had in the studio and how much I love the actors and writing.
  166. (07:26:08) TimOfLegend: Cheese: Once in a while I'll have an idea for a voice. Like with Manny, I knew I wanted the "Latin Humphy Bogart." But then you listen to the auditions and it doesn't matter what you were looking for. You like what you like!
  167. (07:26:21) JunkerV [Mibbit@hide-E1D086A7.ok.shawcable.net] entered the room.
  168. (07:26:30) Cheeseness: "Latin Humphy Bogart" :D
  169. (07:26:30) GameClubFan_839341 [Mibbit@hide-201E5DC4.dhcp.embarqhsd.net] entered the room.
  170. (07:26:39) GameClubFan_494286 [Mibbit@hide-8553C0E1.dyn.telefonica.de] entered the room.
  171. (07:26:41) Tommyunderwear [Mibbit@78533A47.FB1DF80C.FC7F00BB.IP] entered the room.
  172. (07:26:42) RedDragon [Mibbit@7C812700.57B839.7F365959.IP] entered the room.
  173. (07:26:45) Vavassor [Mibbit@hide-6248359F.rcmdva.fios.verizon.net] entered the room.
  174. (07:26:47) Permafry_42: So tim did your cutlery speak to you as a child?
  175. (07:26:51) GameClubFan_891548 [Mibbit@hide-442A1206.rochester.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  176. (07:26:57) Tommyunderwear left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  177. (07:26:58) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: It was asked during an earlier session whether the joke about Alex being future Shay was written in response to fan speculation from act 1
  178. (07:26:58) GameClubFan_721714 [Mibbit@hide-FDBFFF70.ip.telfort.nl] entered the room.
  179. (07:27:01) GameClubFan_839341 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  180. (07:27:05) GameClubFan_222932 [Mibbit@hide-536BDF36.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
  181. (07:27:05) GameClubFan_202674 [Mibbit@hide-8C4CE733.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.
  182. (07:27:07) Cheeseness: Greetings newcomers <3
  183. (07:27:13) TimOfLegend: Permafry: We did purposefully try to make people think in Act 1 that Alex was Shay. Just like we added that speech by Shay's mom about "sacrifice girl" so that you might think mom was vella.
  184. (07:27:23) GameClubFan_605419 [Mibbit@hide-52DE6FF8.netvisao.pt] entered the room.
  185. (07:27:33) GameClubFan_202674 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  186. (07:27:46) Cheeseness: Is Alex's name mentioned during Act 1? I was sure that Vella says it at one point
  187. (07:27:49) TimOfLegend: We wanted to make so much misdirection so that the players wouldn't guess the twist at the end of act 1. I think it worked because nobody guessed it! Well, maybe that one guy... :)
  188. (07:28:00) Cheeseness: Ha ha, that was Bent, right?
  189. (07:28:08) GameClubFan_891548 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  190. (07:28:12) Cheeseness: I wonder if he guessed the game's final ending
  191. (07:28:12) GameClubFan_269574 [Mibbit@hide-8C4CE733.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.
  192. (07:28:14) Maddie [Mibbit@1D346EB1.BAE64D6A.1F9BAC01.IP] entered the room.
  193. (07:28:15) GameClubFan_269574 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  194. (07:28:31) TimOfLegend: Marek was another guy who I thought I wanted a deep, scary, james earl jones voice for. But then we heard the David Kaufman audition and we were like, "No wait. That's it."
  195. (07:28:41) TimOfLegend: I think we caught that in the documentary.
  196. (07:28:53) GameClubFan_299325 [Mibbit@hide-8C4CE733.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.
  197. (07:28:58) GameClubFan_285170 [Mibbit@hide-744C7F69.bchsia.telus.net] entered the room.
  198. (07:29:08) GameClubFan_721714: about the docu, will there be a 20th part?
  199. (07:29:35) TimOfLegend: Cheese: yeah we did make a mistake there. We accidentally included the name Alex in Vella's battle chatter. But if you played it recently, you'll notice we cut that out! Now she just says, "Hit it Dead Eye God!" :)
  200. (07:29:37) Syd: The delivery for Marek's voice reminds me a bit of Alan Rickman
  201. (07:29:39) GameClubFan_299325 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  202. (07:29:51) Cheeseness: Ah ha! That explains why I couldn't find it
  203. (07:30:00) KhrisBrownDF: Tooooootally re: Alan Rickman
  204. (07:30:07) GameClubFan_285170 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  205. (07:30:07) KhrisBrownDF: he is an excellent thief ;)
  206. (07:30:07) Permafry_42: So tim how long till we see df make a sequel focusing on shay and vella's kids?
  207. (07:30:14) TimOfLegend: doc question: YES there is one more episode coming!
  208. (07:30:16) Permafry_42: *only partly joking*
  209. (07:30:22) Cheeseness: It's more like Potter Puppet Pals Snape than real Alan Rickman though
  210. (07:30:22) GameClubFan_721714: TimOfLegend: cool :)
  211. (07:30:25) TimOfLegend: And I had a dialog writing post I was going to write.
  212. (07:30:38) GameClubFan_256520: Please do
  213. (07:30:42) Vavassor: is shay's ship from the hexagon age, by chance?
  214. (07:30:55) TimOfLegend: Elijah was so good at saying, "Superconductive Gyroscopic Hypercam."
  215. (07:31:02) Permafry_42: the super hexagon age

  218. (07:31:22) TimOfLegend: At first it was going to be a "non conductive" one, and we have versions of him saying all the lines that way. But we changed the puzzle.
  219. (07:31:36) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: I've seen the knot puzzle referred to as a "writer's puzzle" - I can't think of another puzzle that's about identification/descriptions in the same way. Did you have any inspiration for that?

  229. (07:32:45) Tinche: TimOfLegend: What are Alex's feral pals properly called? Diamondpals, rhombipals or something else? :D
  230. (07:32:53) Cheeseness: Hah :D
  231. (07:32:54) TimOfLegend: Actually I credit Ben Peck with the knot puzzle. We were working on some way to make a puzzle out of untying it and he suggested the describing the knot idea.

  236. (07:33:18) KhrisBrownDF: He was the most gracious and patient voice talent in the history of ever. I love them all, but man, Elijah has an almost supernatural ability to grok text and immediately make it sound perfect.
  237. (07:33:24) TimOfLegend: I thought it was really clever. Some people hate it, and unfortunately there was a bug that made it unsolveable for people who didn't teleport down to carol.

  243. (07:34:17) TimOfLegend: It was super fun to write all the descriptions because I didn't know what they'd look like. I just threw them over the fence to Lee and Bagel and they had to deal with it. :)
  244. (07:34:17) Cheeseness: Hey Conley :)
  245. (07:34:21) Syd: I love how descriptive the subtitles can be

  251. (07:35:01) KhrisBrownDF: re: # of sessions, I don't have a full count, but it was a bunch.
  252. (07:35:06) Babar: you should've made some weirder descriptions

  264. (07:37:09) Cheeseness: It's been interesting to see people's responses to different puzzles. I loved the knot and the wiring puzzles, but I know people who hate them with a passion
  265. (07:37:13) TimOfLegend: Did you guys get all they way through the game last week?
  266. (07:37:26) Syd: Yeah, we did
  267. (07:37:29) Cheeseness: We did! We've come back for some random bits (starting at act 2 to show off some of the lovely voice work)
  268. (07:37:31) Tinche: I really liked the wiring puzzles
  269. (07:37:36) Tinche: neutral on the knot puzzle
  270. (07:37:38) Babar: yeah wiring puzzle hate o/
  271. (07:37:48) Permafry_42: so tim who added the raz dance?
  272. (07:37:57) Conley: I liked the wiring puzzles! It was fun to take notes/draw diagrams
  273. (07:37:59) Cheeseness: It's Bobby Zilch's dance isn't it?
  274. (07:38:00) GameClubFan_256520: I suffered a lot with the knot puzzle but enjoyed
  275. (07:38:01) TimOfLegend: To Broken Age? Or Psychonauts?
  276. (07:38:08) TimOfLegend: It was in the design.
  277. (07:38:15) Permafry_42: ba
  278. (07:38:15) GameClubFan_256520: I had to replay a part for the wiring puzzle though, because i didn't take notes
  279. (07:38:18) TimOfLegend: How did people find it? I didn't think we ever told that one.
  280. (07:38:24) TimOfLegend: Random discovery?
  281. (07:38:29) Sven_Q45: Now I like the wiring puzzle. How about make an adventure game with that! Like the music puzzles in Loom? :)
  282. (07:38:30) Permafry_42: steam guides
  283. (07:38:44) ErikB [Mibbit@hide-321E1E33.customer.t3.se] entered the room.
  284. (07:38:46) TimOfLegend: I wonder how they localized that "resin-ated" joke overseas.
  285. (07:38:55) Cheeseness: The first people that I spotted who had it had just tried messing around with variations of existing patterns
  286. (07:39:04) Cheeseness: From there I think people grabbed the symbols
  287. (07:39:09) GameClubFan_546073 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  288. (07:39:15) Cheeseness: Did you write all the tree jokes, TimOfLegend?
  289. (07:39:16) Stanto: The knot puzzle I just worked out by series of elimination of "I haven't talked to x about y yet"
  290. (07:39:19) ErikB left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).

  292. (07:39:34) Babar: I got the idea easily enough, just wasn't able to differentiate the colours. Knots were easy to describe :D
  293. (07:39:37) TimOfLegend: I am to blame for all tree jokes.
  294. (07:39:38) Cheeseness: I got the knot puzzle wrong once, then flipped through the possibilities until I found something I was confident describing
  295. (07:39:43) TimOfLegend: But tree jokes are the best.
  296. (07:39:45) Cheeseness: It's OK. Tree jokes are hard
  297. (07:39:46) Tinche: so what's the next Tim Schafer game we have to look forward to?
  298. (07:39:52) Stanto: I also realised "this makes no coherent sense, there must be a third party functionality that explains it"
  299. (07:39:55) GameClubFan_515901 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  300. (07:39:58) Sven_Q45: I like the tree.
  301. (07:40:00) Cheeseness: I feel like the tree jokes might be some of my favourite dialogue from the game :D
  302. (07:40:07) TimOfLegend: Tinche: Half Life 3, of course!
  303. (07:40:18) ***millenomi sighs.
  304. (07:40:22) Permafry_42: dialogue trees in general was a great idea
  305. (07:40:26) Stanto: I thought the tree was a bit of a sap.
  306. (07:40:27) Babar: :D
  307. (07:40:45) Tinche: pft a Tim Schafer HL3 would be awesome
  308. (07:40:48) TimOfLegend: Bravo, Santo.
  309. (07:40:51) TimOfLegend: Well played.
  310. (07:41:03) Cheeseness: :D
  311. (07:41:24) Syd: Shay had built up quite the tolerance to hugs

  313. (07:41:35) TimOfLegend: There isn't really much fairness to the tree jokes. Unless you are really good at guessing jokes in advance.
  314. (07:41:40) Permafry_42: so the troll route behind the snake...
  315. (07:41:58) TimOfLegend: My hope was that, if players are just going to have to plow through this dialog, to put as many jokes in there as possible.
  316. (07:41:59) Permafry_42: everyone thought it would be a new area
  317. (07:42:04) TimOfLegend: Like being lost in a funny maze.
  318. (07:42:04) Syd: I thought it was funny that there was nothing back there
  319. (07:42:09) Cheeseness: I expected outrage at there being nothing beyond the snake, but nobody seemed to mind
  320. (07:42:12) TimOfLegend: Actually, that sounds like it could be horrible.
  321. (07:42:14) Tinche: crap, I haven't seen this area!
  322. (07:42:15) Babar: :O
  323. (07:42:16) Babar: I never went there
  324. (07:42:20) Babar: neither I
  325. (07:42:22) Maddie: I kept trying to find something here
  326. (07:42:22) TimOfLegend: The Inescapable Maze of commedy.

  332. (07:42:44) Conley: Wow, I just realized that I never walked past the tree there.
  333. (07:42:46) TimOfLegend: But the team was going to kill me if I added one more thing. :)

  337. (07:43:18) Cheeseness: A rubber tree joke would've been perfect
  338. (07:43:23) TimOfLegend: You know, you walk off the cliff, and bounce back up on a rubber tree like guybrush?
  339. (07:43:25) Permafry_42: tart being a pastery
  340. (07:43:26) Tinche: even if you folks don't kickstart the next game, maybe you should kickstart a documentary again

  343. (07:43:48) Cheeseness: I laughed so hard when I first saw that Sierra style restore/restart/retry dialog
  344. (07:43:55) TimOfLegend: Tartine is also an amazing bakery here in sf.

  348. (07:44:11) Babar: so you can get free pastries
  349. (07:44:17) millenomi: (the bakery's)
  350. (07:44:22) TimOfLegend: Wil Wheaton did an amazing job as curtis I think.
  351. (07:44:28) millenomi: (Wil Wheaton's lines are lovely)
  352. (07:44:34) CecilRousso: "How long have you been into metal?" :)
  353. (07:44:38) Permafry_42: "as referenced in broken age" on their front window
  354. (07:44:49) Cheeseness: A couple of questions from people who couldn't be here
  355. (07:44:56) TimOfLegend: People ask how we got Wil, and I just say it's some secret magic of Khris'
  356. (07:44:57) Cheeseness: From Taekon: The “switching sides to solve puzzles” part of the game was mostly interpreted (and perhaps even written) as intuition, I personally thought of it as persistence and happy accidents (Shay and Vella keep going at it until something clicks), what is your personal take on this aspect of the game? What do you think it represent?
  357. (07:45:03) Cheeseness: Since we never did get to find out Hope’s surprise for Shay, what do you think it is :D?
  358. (07:45:11) Vavassor: I genuinely had no idea it was wil wheaton until after I was done
  359. (07:45:37) TimOfLegend: I wrote up a big answer to a lot of the intuition questions in the forums. Did you see that, cheese?
  360. (07:45:40) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Did you consider casting Greg as the dialogue tree? I loved him in the animation test
  361. (07:45:48) TimOfLegend: I also thought of it as some sort of shared intuition, but...

  363. (07:46:02) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: I did actually! We spotted it last week (I'm copying and pasting these questions without looking. Whoops!)
  364. (07:46:04) TimOfLegend: I think you can also explain it as information Shay and Vella saw "off camera"
  365. (07:46:21) Babar: 'swhat I said!
  366. (07:46:26) KhrisBrownDF: Wil is awesome - we are so lucky to have great actors. Wil was in Brutal Legend as well and kicked all of the ass.
  367. (07:46:26) TimOfLegend: Shay might have been in his mom's room at some point and seen that picture, for example.
  368. (07:46:26) Babar: still hated it, but yeah
  369. (07:46:34) Permafry_42: this window line was painful
  370. (07:46:38) Cheeseness: I like the idea of the player agency being the intuition/essence that the antagonistic forces in the story are in need of
  371. (07:46:42) millenomi: wait, Wil was in BL?!
  372. (07:46:42) TimOfLegend: And since he was in that room where the picture was taken, he must have seen that board.

  376. (07:47:18) Permafry_42: jack black is so perfect in this game XD
  377. (07:47:26) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: That idea of the player's representation within the narrative was my first interpretation, but it was super interesting to learn that you viewed the player's involvement to be this style of influence in the other games you'd worked on
  378. (07:47:29) Mimness: I love Curtis - I totally want to hang out at his house.

  381. (07:47:39) Vavassor: crazy clouds, a donkey kong country level name if I've ever heard one
  382. (07:48:02) Cheeseness: From EMarley: Since I won’t be able to be around for next week’s, could someone ask Tim about the themes of parenthood and the relationship between parents and children in the game? Like did he draw inspiration from the modern world and his own experience as a parent for it?
  383. (07:48:13) TimOfLegend: Wil was Glamhog 4 I believe. Lionwhyte's bassists.
  384. (07:48:22) KhrisBrownDF: We only work with SAG-AFTRA actors, so we used Jamieson, who was doing Rommel, and is an amazing live Shakespearian actor, to add the kind of bend-out-of-shape subtle self-eighteousness we needed.

  389. (07:48:52) TimOfLegend: Jack is the best, you guys. Whenever I hear Harmon'y I remember how fun he was in the studio.
  390. (07:48:58) TimOfLegend: me too! teacups!
  391. (07:49:04) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Did you spot the thread where people were sharing the notes they took whilst playing the game?

  394. (07:49:31) TimOfLegend: people tweet those to me a lot
  395. (07:49:33) Cheeseness: It was!
  396. (07:49:38) Cheeseness: He got me to make the thread

  398. (07:49:48) TimOfLegend: We purposefully made puzzles where you had to do that, because that's what it was like as a kid.
  399. (07:50:01) TimOfLegend: Made a lot of maps in Zork, and Earthbound.
  400. (07:50:10) Cheeseness: Three pats on the back for Spaff on that one (I think that's the appropriate type of congratulations, right?)
  401. (07:50:13) TimOfLegend: And more recently in Fez!
  402. (07:50:42) Cheeseness: Yeah - I feel like taking notes gives you a different kind of connection to the game
  403. (07:50:52) Syd: Cheeseness: Specifically three, no more, no fewer.
  404. (07:51:00) Vavassor: It looks like a big ol nasty
  405. (07:51:09) Cheeseness: Maybe you become more invested when you put in the effort and rely on your own observation to keep track of clues
  406. (07:51:29) TimOfLegend: Khris, it's "Brommel." :)
  407. (07:51:33) CecilRousso: The knot puzzle was too easy! Solved in something like five minutes. :)
  408. (07:51:38) TimOfLegend: You think I would put a Nazi in my game?
  409. (07:51:46) Permafry_42: so who got the idea of the bird who catches everyone?
  410. (07:52:08) BadAsp: I did
  411. (07:52:13) geekygimp [Mibbit@hide-2BCD5CE9.dyn.optonline.net] entered the room.
  412. (07:52:17) KhrisBrownDF: RIGHT
  413. (07:52:33) SoundCreateUnit: @TimOfLegend Yeah, thanks a lot for making it so that we were encouraged to take notes; it was an incredible experience for me in "Fez" and I loved using that part of my brain again for Act 2.
  414. (07:52:42) TimOfLegend: (J/k everybody. I thought it was okay to have a Nazi because it was really more of a reference to the movie Patton in my mind ("Rommell! i read your book!"), but khris pointed out that people still might not like it.)
  415. (07:53:06) KhrisBrownDF: :)
  416. (07:53:10) Cheeseness: Nazi nazis ruining it for everyone
  417. (07:53:14) TimOfLegend: Raz! I mean Richard!
  418. (07:53:37) Permafry_42: i loved taking notes in the myst series too; note taking is awesome for puzzle games =D
  419. (07:53:39) TimOfLegend: There's nothing fake about Harmn'y Lightbeard, or his Th'ne!
  420. (07:53:41) geekygimp: Hi all :) Just finished the whole game yesterday, liked act two better. Great stuff.
  421. (07:53:53) Cheeseness: Hi geekygimp!
  422. (07:54:20) TimOfLegend: Awesome! Thanks geekygimp. Are you the same geekygimp I talked to on email that time?
  423. (07:54:36) geekygimp: Yep, that would be me.
  424. (07:54:39) millenomi: (a bit OT, but I love being able to peek into the process and the creative tidbits like this. I wish I could do it for my own stuff!)
  425. (07:54:51) TimOfLegend: You never answered my mail! :)
  426. (07:55:14) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend, KhrisBrownDF: What do you feel the biggest things you have learned from Broken Age have been?
  427. (07:55:18) Cheeseness: millenomi: What have you worked on?
  428. (07:55:19) geekygimp: I thought I did. Oops :x I blame graduate school.
  429. (07:55:28) millenomi: NDA'd.
  430. (07:55:30) TimOfLegend: geekyg: :)
  431. (07:55:30) Cheeseness: School. Always getting in the way of games
  432. (07:55:39) Cheeseness: millenomi: Ah! Well, that will put a crimp on things
  433. (07:55:49) KhrisBrownDF: I'm going to comment here that one of the things I LOVE so much about working with Tim's scripts is that they're 100% filled out with content. You can do anything and there's a response and it makes the world more real.
  434. (07:56:13) TimeGentleman [Mibbit@EB5AA2C3.DF7BE6BD.6E5D848D.IP] entered the room.
  435. (07:56:13) JunkerV left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  436. (07:56:22) KhrisBrownDF: Gosh, biggest things learned?
  437. (07:56:23) Cheeseness: We spent a lot of time over the past few weeks exploring hidden dialogue. It was fun
  438. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  439. (07:56:25) Cheeseness: Hey Tim
  440. (07:56:30) Sven_Q45: I want a cupcake
  441. (07:56:30) Cheeseness: Err, hey TimeGentleman
  442. (07:56:32) TimOfLegend: Thanks Khris!
  443. (07:56:33) geekygimp: I'm in between semesters now, so I played act two and also Lifeless Planet. I am playing ALL THE GAMES.
  444. (07:57:08) TimeGentleman: Hey Cheeseness! I saw that and thought "wow, Tim just arrived at the exact same time?!"
  445. (07:57:11) KhrisBrownDF: Hm. Maybe to get more material in auditions from un-tested actors.
  446. (07:57:39) TimOfLegend: Cheese: biggest thing I learned... well, most of the toughest lessons we learned were about PR, community management, transparency, etc. to tell you the truth.
  447. (07:58:00) Babar: and also that LOOK interactions are important!
  448. (07:58:02) TimOfLegend: But I think I also re-learned how to make adventure games again. Which is why the puzzles are more complex in act 2 than 1.
  449. (07:58:19) GameClubFan_706553 [Mibbit@hide-AD0550DA.range86-191.btcentralplus.com] entered the room.
  450. (07:58:21) BadAsp: I can see that, Tim! The puzzles in Act 2 are really diverse!
  451. (07:58:23) GameClubFan_573767 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  452. (07:58:30) CecilRousso: Can't wait for the puzzles in the sequel.
  453. (07:58:40) Conley: Yeah I liked the puzzles in Act 2 a lot!
  454. (07:58:40) TimeGentleman: Definitely saw some TimOfLegend classics come out in Act 2, like the photo clues
  455. (07:58:47) Cheeseness: Expectation management is tough at the best of times. Trying to keep people's expectations in line for a project that doesn't have a concept yet has to be a huge challenge
  456. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  457. (07:59:03) GameClubFan_406640 [Mibbit@hide-9E793BF7.sd.sd.cox.net] entered the room.
  458. (07:59:10) TimOfLegend: CecilRousso: The sequel will be so hard, most people won't even be able to find it. That's the first puzzle.
  459. (07:59:24) Sven_Q45: I liked that there are more puzzles in act 2.
  460. (07:59:29) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: I think I've said it a lot before, but I'd like to say again, that I am so heartened to see that the lesson learned has been to be more transparent rather than less
  461. (07:59:38) geekygimp: I liked them a lot, reminded me a bit of the Nancy Drew games. Which is always a good thing. And I liked the interaction between Vella & Shay, using info from one to solve the other.
  462. (07:59:39) Permafry_42: i love the grandpa in the game
  463. (07:59:45) Tinche: I feel both DF kickstarters have been great successes. Wonder if there's a third incoming? :)
  464. (07:59:51) GameClubFan_706553: What's everyone's favourite topping on cakes - Mine is buttercream!
  465. (08:00:02) Cheeseness: Passionfruit and/or pineapple \o/
  466. (08:00:04) Permafry_42: like how he always wears war badges
  467. (08:00:20) Permafry_42: chocolate =D
  468. (08:00:20) TimOfLegend: Cheese: I wish the lesson was that easy. Like I said in the doc, I 'Hoped" that was the lesson. But the lesson is still cooking in my head.
  469. (08:00:27) geekygimp: buttercream or chocolate. I don't like cake, though...just the icing ;)
  470. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  471. (08:00:42) TimOfLegend: We definitely want to stay transparent. But a lot of people used our information out of context to hurt us.
  472. (08:00:43) GameClubFan_706553: White icing works with EVERY type of cake!
  473. (08:01:16) GameClubFan_706553: It seems like people enjoy hating, gives them something to do instead of looking at their lives.
  474. (08:01:16) Sven_Q45: GameClubFan_706553 Yep.
  475. (08:01:18) TimeGentleman: TimOfLegend can you see any potential solution to that?
  476. (08:01:26) ianmatthew [~ianmatthe@hide-9E793BF7.sd.sd.cox.net] entered the room.
  477. (08:01:36) CecilRousso: TimOfLegend: The howlongtobeat page for the sequel will be an interesting read then. :)
  478. (08:01:43) GameClubFan_406640 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  479. (08:01:45) TimOfLegend: Our backers really valued the information in the doc about the game being late, and our struggles with the buget. But other people used it to just trash us.
  480. (08:02:08) GameClubFan_706553: Any word on episode 20 of the doc?
  481. (08:02:09) GameClubFan_834060: Yeah, it was pretty upsetting to see all of the misinformation being spread so widely
  482. (08:02:10) millenomi: it is _really_ hard to communicate the challenges of making software at scale v_v'
  483. (08:02:12) Ratlarva [Mibbit@hide-84547B9B.hsd1.ut.comcast.net] entered the room.
  484. (08:02:16) TimOfLegend: TimeGentleman: Hide stuff? :)
  485. (08:02:20) BadAsp: Now I REALLY want some cupcakes
  486. (08:02:29) geekygimp: Is the documentary only available for backers?
  487. (08:02:39) TimOfLegend: Nope, it's up on youtube!
  488. (08:02:45) millenomi: aw ;_;
  489. (08:02:50) geekygimp: Cool :)
  490. (08:02:59) Sven_Q45: I hated that people hated the whole thing so much. :(
  491. (08:03:01) millenomi: (the performances are _so_ _good_, darn it.)
  492. (08:03:07) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: It feels like being an alternative source for news can help give balance to some of that out of context stuff - I've seen some people's perspectives shift when they've seen the doc and that's really positive
  493. (08:03:11) TimeGentleman: TimOfLegend except that! I guess the private backer thing complicated things. Perhaps transparency on a production without that would be less troublesome?
  494. (08:03:17) KhrisBrownDF: millenomi: <3 <3 <3
  495. (08:03:32) TimOfLegend: Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIhLvue17Sd7F6pU2ByRRb0igiI-WKk3D
  496. (08:03:34) Cheeseness: geekygimp: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIhLvue17Sd7F6pU2ByRRb0igiI-WKk3D
  497. (08:03:39) Cheeseness: Ha ha, snap
  498. (08:03:40) TimOfLegend: haha
  499. (08:03:40) geekygimp: Thanks :D
  500. (08:03:46) Cheeseness: You get to watch it in stereo now
  501. (08:03:47) TimOfLegend: linx
  502. (08:03:53) TimOfLegend: That's a link jinx.
  503. (08:03:56) Permafry_42: i love these girls
  504. (08:03:58) TimeGentleman: Wow, someone beat Cheeseness to posting a link!
  505. (08:04:01) Cheeseness: That was an excellent pun
  506. (08:04:06) GameClubFan_834060: I feel like a lot of the negativity would have been out there even without the documentary though
  507. (08:04:13) CecilRousso: The dead eye druids made me think about Loom.
  508. (08:04:13) Cheeseness: Dawn and Courtney!
  509. (08:04:16) TimOfLegend: One of these druids is Nicky Rapp, voice of Lili in Psychonauts.
  510. (08:04:17) GameClubFan_706553: Someone told me that these two were a couple, Tim is that true?
  511. (08:04:28) GameClubFan_898889: Is 2 Player still filming stuff for the final episode?
  512. (08:04:33) Sven_Q45: I think I´ll watch them on Youtube and let the DVD be. :)
  513. (08:04:38) TimOfLegend: The other one is my sister! Ginny Westcott, voice of Nurse Edna from DOTT, and the Den Mom in Psychonauts.
  514. (08:04:56) Vavassor: yeah, well it being a "high profile kickstarter project" in an of itself attracts a certain amount of ire, unfortunately
  515. (08:04:59) TimeGentleman: TimOfLegend wow, she can play young!
  516. (08:05:16) BadAsp: Vavassor yeah, I can tell with Gamergate
  517. (08:05:25) GameClubFan_834060 is now known as konfuzed
  518. (08:05:33) Sven_Q45: Wait! Voice of Edna?
  519. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  520. (08:05:44) Sven_Q45: :)
  521. (08:05:45) TimeGentleman: That chant sounds like "one of us!"
  522. (08:05:51) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Do you have a favourite Broken Age character/puzzle/location?
  523. (08:05:52) GameClubFan_725550 [Mibbit@hide-ECCA1C67.dsl.telepac.pt] entered the room.
  524. (08:06:02) TimOfLegend: Pen!
  525. (08:06:12) Cheeseness: Ha ha, I love that it's Pen and not Gus :D
  526. (08:06:12) KhrisBrownDF: Haha Gus
  527. (08:06:22) KhrisBrownDF: God he is hilarious
  528. (08:06:22) Vavassor: I loved this character btw
  529. (08:06:30) TimOfLegend: The best thing about doing this game is that it got Pen Ward to come to my house and do the Lumpy Space Princess voice live for my daughter.
  530. (08:06:35) Permafry_42: i love ward here
  531. (08:06:38) BadAsp: Oh my glob!
  532. (08:06:45) GameClubFan_706553: I'm guessing this part is based on the true life horror of juicing... ;)
  533. (08:06:50) TimeGentleman: I love that I knew from the doc that this juicing stuff was ripped from Tim's life
  534. (08:06:55) Permafry_42: glob is dead!
  535. (08:06:59) Tinche: love the jab at 3d by m'ggie
  536. (08:07:05) TimOfLegend: Long live Glob!
  537. (08:07:14) GameClubFan_706553: Who the hell is Glob?
  538. (08:07:16) Permafry_42: long live magic man =D
  539. (08:07:19) ***millenomi is roftling at every line
  540. (08:07:20) Cheeseness: So, Oliver asked a good question a couple of weeks ago. What did people find the most surprising things to come out of the documentary?
  541. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  542. (08:07:32) TimOfLegend: I think M'ggie has an eye problem that gives her trouble with 3d. maybe.
  543. (08:07:43) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: I want to turn that around and ask what you found to be the most surprising aspect of the documentary
  544. (08:07:47) TimOfLegend: The one scratch dialog I wish you could here is Oliver as gus.
  545. (08:07:49) Tinche: or she just knows what's what
  546. (08:08:00) Cheeseness: Oliver as Gus! I want to hear that
  547. (08:08:03) Amp: I love the knife
  548. (08:08:31) Sven_Q45: Dutch! :)
  549. (08:08:35) TimOfLegend: In alpha, gus would say "Now get over here, unhook my underwear" every time you left the dialog. In Oliver's german accent.
  550. (08:08:36) Tinche: I like the spoon.
  551. (08:08:53) Mimness: Cloud bathroom. Ewww.
  552. (08:08:55) Cheeseness: Ha, that's great
  553. (08:08:56) TimeGentleman: Tim and Kris - does scratch dialogue ever lead to one of the dev team doing the final performance, as sometimes happens with eg Pixar films?
  554. (08:09:05) KhrisBrownDF: "watch the skies" lolololololol
  555. (08:09:06) GameClubFan_706553: TimofLegend: Have you noticed if this game has been better received on tablet or PC?
  556. (08:09:24) TimOfLegend: most surprising thin in the documentary... hm...
  557. (08:09:33) Sven_Q45: Oliver did VA too?
  558. (08:09:39) Cheeseness: (It's something about Lee, I bet)
  559. (08:09:39) Babar: the only text walkthrough I found was for the tablet :D
  560. (08:09:45) KhrisBrownDF: TimeGentleman: not yet, but never say never
  561. (08:09:54) TimOfLegend: TimeGentleman--not really
  562. (08:10:03) Vavassor: I love how he gives shay no more explanation whatsoever. Just: "yeah! Basically!!!"
  563. (08:10:07) TimOfLegend: People on the team get very attached to the scratch dialog , but
  564. (08:10:08) TimeGentleman: oops, mispelt your name Khris!
  565. (08:10:30) Sven_Q45: Actually there is no character I didn´t like.
  566. (08:10:38) TimOfLegend: I really see the value in the pro performance. Even though some of our staff is pretty good. Still no replacement for the pros.
  567. (08:10:44) KhrisBrownDF: TimeGentleman: it's all good :)
  568. (08:10:45) SoundCreateUnit: TimOfLegend: How was the process of writing Act 2? I presume you had thought of, outlined, and perhaps wrote part of Act 2 before Act 1 was released, but the documentary did make it seem like you did a lot of writing for Act 2 *after* the release of Act 1. How was it to have the writing process bifurcated like that?
  569. (08:10:53) Permafry_42: i kind wish the fork had more lines
  570. (08:10:53) TimOfLegend: Also, we'd have to Taft-Hartley them.
  571. (08:11:26) TimeGentleman: *googles Taft-Hartley
  572. (08:11:27) GameClubFan_678934 [Mibbit@7DC6057.2E77F3E9.58E1D55C.IP] entered the room.
  573. (08:11:33) GameClubFan_678934 left the room (quit: Quit: GameClubFan_678934).
  574. (08:11:33) TimOfLegend: soundcreate: well you write in layers. Major story arc first, then scene layout, then temp dialog, then real dialog
  575. (08:11:38) GameClubFan_725550 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  576. (08:11:49) TimOfLegend: so before act 1 was out I already had the top layer of the whole game layed out
  577. (08:12:12) TimOfLegend: We knew the hug attack scene was going to pay off, and the grabber arm button and lazer beam trigger.
  578. (08:12:25) BadAsp: Jessie's baby is still so cute
  579. (08:12:51) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF you have to convince Tim to do at least a one-line cameo in a game at some point!
  580. (08:13:00) Sven_Q45: BadAsp Yes. :)
  581. (08:13:12) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: How come you weren't manning the Broken Age hint line???
  582. (08:13:13) TimOfLegend: But the actual final words the characters said was mostly written after. Except some of them. Like Harm'ny. We wrote him in advance so we could get Jack recorded while we had him.
  583. (08:13:16) GameClubFan_706553: Loved the final image of the game where the two mogs create a bridge. Very nicely done.
  584. (08:13:24) KhrisBrownDF: TimeGentleman: He was in "Haunt"
  585. (08:13:33) TimOfLegend: Tg: are you trying to get Khris in trouble with the unions?
  586. (08:13:33) ElaineMarley [Mibbit@hide-3F07F23.as13285.net] entered the room.
  587. (08:13:39) geekygimp: Have to get going, just wanted to express how much I liked act two :) I will probably send an e-mail soon...
  588. (08:13:43) Cheeseness: Hey ElaineMarley
  589. (08:13:51) GameClubFan_706553: I actually bought Haunt because Tim was in it. Still a good game.
  590. (08:13:52) Cheeseness: Thank you for coming, geekygimp!
  591. (08:13:59) KhrisBrownDF: Cheeseness: I was in LA when that phone was active and couldn't go out with the gang, sadly.
  592. (08:14:00) TimOfLegend: On our servers somewhere there is a version of Pyschonauts where I play Coach Oleander though. :)
  593. (08:14:01) Sven_Q45: Hi ElaineMarley.
  594. (08:14:06) Cheeseness: There's another game called Haunt?
  595. (08:14:07) WiseTiger [Mibbit@ACCAD890.85C622B7.9003417.IP] entered the room.
  596. (08:14:09) TimOfLegend: Haunt!
  597. (08:14:09) ElaineMarley: Hi!
  598. (08:14:20) KhrisBrownDF: Ahhhhhhhhhhhh how much do we love Cree Summer?
  599. (08:14:33) TimOfLegend: Whenever someone wants me to do a voice for a game, I can just point to haunt and then they'll stop. :)
  600. (08:14:34) KhrisBrownDF: She is so great. She plays Vella's mother.
  601. (08:14:39) BadAsp: I'm a Drawn Together fan and Tiny Toons fan, so yeeeeeeaaaaah, I love her!
  602. (08:14:41) millenomi: gawd, the heartstrings.
  603. (08:14:49) geekygimp left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  604. (08:14:55) KestrelPi [Mibbit@hide-DAC4960.skybroadband.com] entered the room.
  605. (08:14:59) Cheeseness: Hey KestrelPi
  606. (08:15:00) TimeGentleman: oh god, TimOFLegend, you *have* to leak some of that scratch dialogue!
  607. (08:15:02) KestrelPi: Beep
  608. (08:15:03) SoundCreateUnit: TimOfLegend: Ah cool, thanks! Yeah makes sense to do it in layers like that.
  609. (08:15:29) lietu: I've not been paying enough attention to the chat, but .. are you up for more kickstarter funded adventure games? ;)
  610. (08:15:32) CecilRousso: Yo KestrelPi!
  611. (08:15:45) GameClubFan_706553: How are the other projects at DF going? If you want to drop a hint...
  612. (08:15:49) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Ron's written a few posts about "puzzle dependency charts". Do you use a similar approach to fleshing out/visualising puzzle design?
  613. (08:15:58) TimOfLegend: Lietu: I'm up for more crowdfunding!
  614. (08:16:16) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF Elijah's performance is quite chilled out - how did that develop?
  615. (08:16:17) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Your linked in account still says that the second part of Broken Age is upcoming!
  616. (08:16:21) TimOfLegend: I think i need a break from adventure games though. I forgot how tough they were to make!
  617. (08:16:27) Sven_Q45: But I need a little pause for baking now. :D
  618. (08:16:29) lietu: heheh
  619. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  620. (08:16:42) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: What, you mean you're not diving into RedBot straight away?
  621. (08:16:54) KestrelPi: Oh hey Khris,too!
  622. (08:16:55) Permafry_42: tim considering ... plaaaatformers? hint hint?
  623. (08:17:03) lietu: I'd imagine making a good game is tough in general, but I can see why adventure can be special
  624. (08:17:04) TimOfLegend: Well, RedBot would obviously be a whole game of wiring puzzles.
  625. (08:17:05) Sven_Q45: TimOfLegend I don´t get enough of them. ;)
  626. (08:17:13) Cheeseness: Hah!
  627. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  628. (08:17:24) GameClubFan_706553: I wish DF made a Futurama game!
  629. (08:17:33) Babar: I wanted to ask about that...someone said that an adventure game would be cheaper to make than an equivalently sized other game like an RPG or platformer or FPS or something
  630. (08:17:38) Babar: is that necessarily true?
  631. (08:17:40) duploduplex [Mibbit@hide-64142E81.cpe.webspeed.dk] entered the room.
  632. (08:17:45) duploduplex: good evening
  633. (08:17:52) KhrisBrownDF: TimeGentleman: We wanted Shay to be fairly relaxed to avoid him sounding petulant in Act 1.
  634. (08:17:52) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Are there any game genres of mechanics that you'd like to try that you haven't before?
  635. (08:17:55) Cheeseness: Hi duploduplex
  636. (08:17:57) TimOfLegend: I think it's the other way around. Adventure games are super expensive.
  637. (08:17:59) Babar: I figured that each background would be different, each puzzle specifically designed, so not?
  638. (08:18:01) Babar: yeah
  639. (08:18:05) TimOfLegend: Everything is hand crafted and mostly used only once.
  640. (08:18:19) KestrelPi: Haha, I too feel the need for a DF announcement. First time in a while we haven't had an announced (new) game
  641. (08:18:19) TimOfLegend: You'll work for months on something that's 30 minutes of gameplay.
  642. (08:18:20) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF ahh, that makes sense.
  643. (08:18:22) Cheeseness: I feel like 2D adventure games probably amplify that a bit
  644. (08:18:28) Sven_Q45: Adventure games expensive? No I don´t think so.
  645. (08:18:35) CecilRousso: TimOfLegend: The hexipals, whose idea were those? Who designed them?
  646. (08:18:42) lietu: well, of course you could expect tim to design the puzzles, and do the voice acting, all for free, to bring happiness and joy to the fans .. but that's maybe too much to ask for
  647. (08:18:43) Cheeseness: Levi!
  648. (08:18:51) Cheeseness: Levi designed the hexipals
  649. (08:18:56) TimOfLegend: Let me rephrase that: Adventure games are expensive the way I make them! :)
  650. (08:19:01) lietu: haha
  651. (08:19:04) Cheeseness: Ha ha
  652. (08:19:07) Babar: hah
  653. (08:19:07) KestrelPi: Adventure games are expensive because there's so much custom work, not many of the assets created are repeated.
  654. (08:19:08) Sven_Q45: haha
  655. (08:19:11) TimeGentleman: Cheeseness yeah, Bagel told us that in an earlier GC, right?
  656. (08:19:11) GameClubFan_706553: drum roll
  657. (08:19:12) TimOfLegend: The hexipals originally came from a drawing by Scott.
  658. (08:19:17) Mimness: I hadn't previously noticed that Vella thinks the hexapal is another maiden! :P
  659. (08:19:33) Cheeseness: Oh! Maybe Bagel was referring to the diamondpals?
  660. (08:19:37) Permafry_42: i wish vella could have gotten a hug
  661. (08:19:39) Conley: They're so cute! I want a hexipal.
  662. (08:19:39) TimOfLegend: He had them poping out of the honeycombed walls of the ship.
  663. (08:19:46) Sven_Q45: How about a GTA (budget) adventure game than? :D
  664. (08:19:46) TimOfLegend: But Levi did the final character design.
  665. (08:19:53) Babar: hahah
  666. (08:20:00) GameClubFan_706553: What's the weather like in San Francisco today?
  667. (08:20:09) millenomi: (cloudy)
  668. (08:20:10) lietu: I actually didn't like a few of the act 2 puzzles that much .. especially where there seemed to be completely unique ways that you were supposed to solve things sort of contradicting your past experience .. e.g. the past experience taught me that I as a player cannot relay information from one character to the other, and then some puzzles rely on it in act 2
  669. (08:20:10) TimeGentleman: Bagel said they originally were going to join together to make stuff...
  670. (08:20:14) KhrisBrownDF: TimeGentleman: Elijah has a natural ability to see the horrors of the world and respond to them with compassion and perspective. Having him make use of this canny kindness in his performance meant that he would still be sympathetic when you realize that he's basically been being a dick to his real mom (without knowing it)
  671. (08:20:15) duploduplex: did scott c ever make a epic showdown drawing for broken age?
  672. (08:20:24) TimOfLegend: Sunny in Noe Valley, with clouds rolling in just now.
  673. (08:20:46) Sven_Q45: Today it was very sunny and hot.
  674. (08:20:55) TimOfLegend: duploduplex: No! I hadn't thought of that. now I'm offended!
  675. (08:21:05) Permafry_42: i love wood in ba and over the guarden wall
  676. (08:21:06) Cheeseness: Can anybody say whether there will be a DF announcement at E3? Announcing announcements is what's cool these days, right?
  677. (08:21:09) lietu: I was consciously ignoring the info I saw on one character because it "could not" be the solution to the other issue
  678. (08:21:11) Permafry_42: *garden
  679. (08:21:23) TimOfLegend: TG: Yeah, they would stack up. We did reference that a bit in the airlock elevator.
  680. (08:21:34) KestrelPi: Maybe you can announce that you'll be announcing an announcement
  681. (08:22:13) Permafry_42: vella can be pretty cruel in this game...
  682. (08:22:29) Sven_Q45: Marek says she is a terrorist. :D
  683. (08:22:34) GameClubFan_706553: If I had to watch one e3 presser this year...
  684. (08:22:39) Syd: Vella seems to kind of have an "ends justifies the means" approach sometimes. :P
  685. (08:22:41) Cheeseness: This is the only thing that Vella seems to show a hint of remorse for
  686. (08:22:50) duploduplex: no kidding Permafry_42, i don't think that tree wanna hang out with her
  687. (08:23:29) KestrelPi: That seems like an adventure game thing in general, though. Or at least something prominent in the LucasArts tradition
  688. (08:23:33) Cheeseness: Part of me wanted to see Vella have some coming-of-age responsibility for the consequences of her own actions, but I kinda like that the game ends with her staying true to who she is
  689. (08:23:34) GameClubFan_706553: That freaked me out first time
  690. (08:23:41) KestrelPi: end justifies the means style puzzle solutions that is
  691. (08:23:46) GameClubFan_256520: We should have the prequel that tells the story of how they turned the warrior town into baker town
  692. (08:23:49) TimOfLegend: lietu: That's acutally the other thing that's tough about adventure games. No matter what you do, you can't please everybody. Put the same puzzle in front of two people, one of them will think it's too easy, one will think it's too hard.
  693. (08:23:56) Sven_Q45: Jennifer Hale!!
  694. (08:24:24) GameClubFan_706553: Well the game really pleased me. Best adventure game in almost 20 years!
  695. (08:24:26) Cheeseness: Many adventure game protagonists are either oblivious to or revel in the mayhem they cause for others. It's like a running gag across the entire genre
  696. (08:24:27) millenomi: Marek, slimy to the end.
  697. (08:24:27) SoundCreateUnit: TimOfLegend: This is tangential, but just wanted to say very glad Double Fine is publishing/helping put out "Gnog." The new trailer for it is incredible. The sort of game that reignites my love/excitement for the medium. Kudos!
  698. (08:24:29) KestrelPi: True, I've seen people breeze past broken age puzzles on youtube that other people have complained on the forums is way too obscure
  699. (08:24:33) lietu: TimOfLegend: yea .. I totally get it, and I understood it there and then right at the same time I was shouting at my game "this is goddamn stupid" when I realized the solution .. a few minutes I was thinking "it was kinda cool, but still annoying" hehe
  700. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  701. (08:25:01) WiseTiger left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  702. (08:25:08) GameClubFan_256520: Guybrush was quite a douchebag most of the time, yet it was funny
  703. (08:25:12) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: How do you go about reconciling that feedback? Do you ever get to a point where you feel comfortable that you've struck the right balance for the game at hand with regards to difficulty/appeal?
  704. (08:25:17) Permafry_42: also the main characters have to be telepathic
  705. (08:25:20) lietu: TimOfLegend: I guess my main issue with it was just that it was completely unique, my brain was aggressively fighting against it being a possible solution
  706. (08:25:27) TimOfLegend: About Vella--there were some people on the team, like Anna, who thought Vella often sounded too blood thirsty.
  707. (08:25:38) TimOfLegend: But I stuck with it because I felt she was justified.
  708. (08:25:40) GameClubFan_256520: The knife loved her for that
  709. (08:25:52) GameClubFan_256520: she was a descendant of a warrior town
  710. (08:25:57) millenomi: (to be honest, the one thing that sorta ticked me off was the plot infodump later in this room. but I can see the time/cost constraints at play.)
  711. (08:26:04) TimOfLegend: This monster was going to KILL her. And it had eaten, she thought, countless girls from her town and others.
  712. (08:26:10) Cheeseness: Vella is also bent on saving her town
  713. (08:26:11) TimOfLegend: Why should she be nice about it?
  714. (08:26:12) Sven_Q45: And this grandpa... :)
  715. (08:26:13) Conley: I didn't mind Vella being a little bloodthirsty
  716. (08:26:14) Cheeseness: And her family
  717. (08:26:15) Cheeseness: Right
  718. (08:26:31) Conley: So are the yarn pals some kind of robots covered in yarn? Or are they just like, magical yarn beings?
  719. (08:26:33) GameClubFan_706553: At least Mog Chothra had some manners....
  720. (08:26:34) duploduplex: yeah it didnt really feel out of character for her
  721. (08:26:35) Conley: or is it a mystery
  722. (08:26:59) SoundCreateUnit: TimOfLegend (All of the video games you've decided to publish via "Double Fine Presents" have been great. Hope over time y'all become known as the Criterion/Fantagraphics/Sub Pop/Yazoo of video game publishing.)
  723. (08:27:00) duploduplex: industrial nanofiber technology Conley
  724. (08:27:14) Permafry_42: i love the hey wait moment
  725. (08:27:15) duploduplex: nanoyarn
  726. (08:27:24) TimOfLegend: Hi Conley! Originally, we thought the yarn pals had hexipals inside, and you'd see them when they unraveled.
  727. (08:27:25) GameClubFan_706553: Merrick's dead stare is so funny. I can't explain why, the way he stares at nothing is hilarious.
  728. (08:27:46) Conley: Ah, interesting!
  729. (08:28:04) Cheeseness: There's something a bit more charming about them just being yarn now
  730. (08:28:21) TimOfLegend: But then the concept art of the yellow yarn pal in the space weaver's loom had a smiley face on it, and I liked that, so we decided that the yarn was special.
  731. (08:28:25) TimeGentleman: yeah, makes them their own thing
  732. (08:28:30) Mimness: :O Hexapals inside yarn pals?!
  733. (08:28:40) TimOfLegend: I think one of the characters refered to it as nano-something-or-other yarn.
  734. (08:28:42) GameClubFan_706553: I want a spin off with the yarn pals!
  735. (08:28:42) Cheeseness: Yo dog, we heard you like pals
  736. (08:28:51) TimOfLegend: Not magic. Just hi-tech.
  737. (08:28:58) Sven_Q45: "The secret of M... wait of the yarnpals". :D Or yarn-yaars. :D
  738. (08:29:15) Conley: Cool! Whatever they are, they're adorable.
  739. (08:29:19) TimeGentleman: yeah, they say they can't cut through the high-tensile nanofibre or something?
  740. (08:29:22) Mimness: Hi-tech yarn! Haha
  741. (08:29:25) CecilRousso: Hexipals inside the yarnpals wouldn't have explained their voices. :)
  742. (08:29:33) Tinche: I felt this part held your hand a little too much
  743. (08:29:39) KestrelPi: Yeah. Probably full of ele...ctro..bes or something.
  744. (08:29:49) Cheeseness: Tell us about SPLARGH
  745. (08:29:57) duploduplex: ah yeah that was the wording an, shay said it in episode 2
  746. (08:29:58) Cheeseness: And Splargh Therapy
  747. (08:29:58) GameClubFan_706553: The only problem in act 2 is that the yarn pals' voices aren't matching from act 1. Blue has Yellow's voice.
  748. (08:30:05) CecilRousso: Who did that painting of young(er) Shay?
  749. (08:30:07) TimOfLegend: You thought the boots puzzle held your hand too much? haha
  750. (08:30:16) lietu: the boots puzzle I found a bit annoying, I was hoping I could at least mark the results in the chart in game, and when I was sure I knew the answer I somehow got it wrong .. and then randomly clicking on "confirmed wrong answers" ended up solving it for me
  751. (08:30:26) Tinche: after a while the game shows you how to solve it on paper :p
  752. (08:30:41) TimOfLegend: The yarn pals voices are consistent except in the cuddle dungeon we switched them on accident and thought no one would notice!
  753. (08:30:51) Sven_Q45: To be honest I solved the boots puzzle by accident. :D
  754. (08:30:51) Syd: I had trouble with this puzzle. Cheese had to coach me through it. :P
  755. (08:30:53) GameClubFan_861755 [Mibbit@hide-7F511F1F.access.telenet.be] entered the room.
  756. (08:30:58) GameClubFan_706553: Except me... sorry...
  757. (08:30:58) Permafry_42: i love she forgot her own name
  758. (08:31:04) Cheeseness: Coach Olicheeser
  759. (08:31:15) TimOfLegend: Also, it's not clear that the yarn pals aren't duplicated. The blue yarn pal on the train may not be the same one in the cuddle dungeon.
  760. (08:31:24) KestrelPi: I didn't need a diagram, but i did solve it based on logic. Nice tidy bit of reasoning, I thought. Not necessarily clear for people unused to that sort of puzzle though
  761. (08:31:26) GameClubFan_898889: Melanie, Nadine... What's the third Teleporter's name?
  762. (08:31:28) GameClubFan_706553: Ooooohhh....
  763. (08:31:29) TimeGentleman: the thing the chart helped me with was highlighting the fact that no colour OR pattern was repeated. I somehow had it in my head that it was only combinations that weren't repeated. Didn't listen to Mom closely enough
  764. (08:31:35) Mimness: I get that all this information is here for the puzzle, obviously. But at first I was like, "Hmm, there's a lot of weird boot fetish paraphernalia in this room..."
  765. (08:31:42) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Tell us about the teleporters!
  766. (08:31:49) Cheeseness: I love them
  767. (08:31:58) Sven_Q45: My sisters name is Melanie Nadine. :D
  768. (08:32:12) ElaineMarley: TimOfLegend How come the lack of resentment on Shay and Vella's part for how much their parents have failed them?
  769. (08:32:20) millenomi: I really felt the head didn't look all that big here, nor the voice all that different, tbh.
  770. (08:32:20) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Is it true that the teleporters are named after Sven_Q45's sister?
  771. (08:32:26) TimOfLegend: You see? Tinche is saying it was too easy. Lietu is asking for more hand holding. It's a tough racket people! :)
  772. (08:32:37) Sven_Q45: lol, Cheese.
  773. (08:32:41) lietu: hehe
  774. (08:32:47) millenomi: I agree with the teleporter here :p
  775. (08:32:54) lietu: TimOfLegend: not necessarily more hand holding but more tools in game
  776. (08:32:57) Cheeseness: I felt like the boot puzzle was pretty strightforward, but I had a feeling that people would get the grumpy grumps about not being able to draw on the chart
  777. (08:32:59) TimeGentleman: The teleporters are Douglas Adamsy
  778. (08:33:03) Cheeseness: (I didn't even trigger it on my first run, I don't think)
  779. (08:33:08) duploduplex: so in broken age canon, are all your bodies atoms physically moved during teleportation, or is it more like the type where it builds a new body at the destination(AKA murder of the original)
  780. (08:33:10) duploduplex: THIS IS IMPORTANT
  781. (08:33:20) KhrisBrownDF: Cheeseness: These are Cree Summer's voice - she loved the attitude for these.
  782. (08:33:27) lietu: I can't imagine taking out a piece of paper and a pen in this day and age, and there were enough options that apparently I couldn't solve it in my head (while I thought I did)
  783. (08:33:43) millenomi: I love how they go to calling each other nicknames that quick :)
  784. (08:33:45) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Sassy teleporters are the best
  785. (08:33:55) GameClubFan_706553: I was shocked see John Cygan who was SOLIDUS SNAKE as the Spoon. Such a different performance!
  786. (08:34:00) Tinche: maybe I'm just weird but I love self-contained puzzles that need a piece of paper and 10 minutes of thinking to solve
  787. (08:34:07) TimOfLegend: duploduplex: The teleporters are actually flying you through another dimensional space, kind of like the fireplaces in Harry Potter.
  788. (08:34:10) KhrisBrownDF: Cree is wonderful - she's able to chat between takes about anything and immediately drop back into the perfect voice and manner for the character.
  789. (08:34:16) Sven_Q45: millenomi I love that part! "Hi, Vel." "Hi Mel". :D
  790. (08:34:17) KhrisBrownDF: She is such a pro.
  791. (08:34:19) KestrelPi: Fact is, most adventure game puzzles are easy or impossible, subjectively. They're easy if you get them right away, and impossible if you have to look up the solution. If a player encounters half a dozen in a game that strike a balance between those two extremes, that's pretty good going!
  792. (08:34:20) Cheeseness: You know, Chasm made me pull out a pencil and a pad. I was soooooooooooooo happy when it did. I am looking forward to that game so much.
  793. (08:34:50) Tinche: *googles Chasm*
  794. (08:34:50) TimOfLegend: Actually the teleporter does say she is "derezzing" you, so maybe Shay and Vella are dying each time they use one.
  795. (08:35:04) duploduplex: broken age teleporters move you through Xen, hopefully it won't lead to any transdimensional invasions
  796. (08:35:07) Cheeseness: Tinche: It's a crowdfunded fantasy metroidvania thing by Dischord games
  797. (08:35:14) Vavassor: The Swapper-style
  798. (08:35:40) Tinche: looks cool
  799. (08:35:53) Tinche: Linux support <3
  800. (08:35:53) CecilRousso: The Swapper is is awesome. Everyone should play The Swapper.
  801. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  802. (08:36:25) TimeGentleman: I guessed Mr Hhuggy randomly first tme!
  803. (08:36:46) KhrisBrownDF: John Cygan is so sweet. Sometimes the actors will revel in the opportunity to play against roles for which they are usually cast.
  804. (08:37:00) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: To me, it felt like the snake puzzle is a safety net. It's easy to solve the snake and boot puzzles without looking for clues elsewhere, but everything after them is gated in such a way that you need to finish those two puzzles before you can move onto any other puzzle that has clues in the other character's world
  805. (08:37:05) flesk: Uh, I forgot to remind Anemone about game club.
  806. (08:37:14) flesk: *of
  807. (08:37:19) TimOfLegend: There's a company called Dischord? Whoa. That was the original name for Dropchord, but we changed it because we got an angry letter from Fugazi's record label.
  808. (08:37:22) GameClubFan_706553: Must be a dream to direct actors like that.
  809. (08:37:23) TimeGentleman: I love that "the give up option" solution - like Dr Fred and the contract
  810. (08:37:23) Permafry_42: i love that her hair has turned into helmet hair
  811. (08:37:25) liorean [liorean@hide-37944BFF.cust.bredband2.com] entered the room.
  812. (08:37:48) Tinche: I have to admit I had to look up the snake puzzle
  813. (08:37:51) Cheeseness: Because as soon as you hear shay say "Mr Huggy", you remember it from the boot puzzle, or if you did it the other way round, as soon as you see "Mr Huggy" as a dialogue option, you (hopefully) remember that that's what Shay called the snake
  814. (08:37:54) Tinche: which in retrospect is obvious
  815. (08:37:54) KhrisBrownDF: We also really avoid treating the actors as though they are robots or guns for hire - we are so grateful they're there, and we work hard to build a bond with them as people.
  816. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  817. (08:38:09) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: You guys need to stop picking names that have been taken
  818. (08:38:11) duploduplex: future space hair balsam must be pretty sweet
  819. (08:38:16) GameClubFan_706553: KhrisBrownDF: Have you ever had a cameo?
  820. (08:38:27) Sven_Q45: Who did John Cygan again in BA?
  821. (08:38:29) TimOfLegend: tg: give up option solution: haha I stole that from Indy Fate
  822. (08:38:36) liorean: Darn, I had forgotten about this:(
  823. (08:38:43) TimOfLegend: that part in the jungle with the parrot. my favorite dialog puzzle
  824. (08:38:44) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF would play a sweary chopstick
  825. (08:38:48) GameClubFan_898889: Hope's waist is terrifying.
  826. (08:38:49) Cheeseness: Hey liorean!
  827. (08:39:00) millenomi: it is distressingly sad and yet adorable that they were such distracted parents their own son thought they were computers. v_v'
  828. (08:39:01) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF you had a cameo in Monkey 2, right?
  829. (08:39:07) KhrisBrownDF: haha what is a sweary chopstick?
  830. (08:39:07) Permafry_42: why dandelion btw?
  831. (08:39:15) Sven_Q45: Who did John Cygan again in BA?
  832. (08:39:27) GameClubFan_706553: The SPOON
  833. (08:39:33) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF like the cutlery characters, but with your famous potty-mouth ;)
  834. (08:39:41) Sven_Q45: Didn´t realise!
  835. (08:39:44) KhrisBrownDF: I had a cameo in the art, but not the voice
  836. (08:39:48) TimOfLegend: At one point, Hope's waste is only wide enough for one tube of her small intestine.
  837. (08:39:56) GameClubFan_706553: Or Khris could be a Toothbrush...
  838. (08:40:00) Sven_Q45: For a big SWKOTOR fan I like that there are voices her too!!
  839. (08:40:02) KhrisBrownDF: I am sad that me telling icky jokes is something that will be remembered :(
  840. (08:40:02) Mimness: Yeah Hope's hair is amazing, but her body is scary...
  841. (08:40:11) duploduplex: just to get it out of the way, i really loved broken age TimOfLegend, you and the team did a wonderful job with it, thank you.
  842. (08:40:27) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF thought that was great, a breath of fresh air!
  843. (08:40:35) Cheeseness: "fresh"
  844. (08:40:41) KhrisBrownDF: but it make people laugh, so that is okay I guess
  845. (08:40:49) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF though I had forgotten that, was thinking more of you swearing like a trooper :)
  846. (08:41:01) TimOfLegend: Thanks, duploduplex! :)
  847. (08:41:31) KhrisBrownDF: the 2PP guys are SO wonderful, I trust them - they did such an incredible job on the doc
  848. (08:41:44) KhrisBrownDF: I just need to not be crass when the cameras are on :D
  849. (08:41:49) millenomi: Vellaputer :)
  850. (08:41:54) KestrelPi: I have a question. Do you ever regret the use of the term 'old school' in the original pitch, given that it turns out that seems to mean 10 different things to 10 different people?
  851. (08:41:59) GameClubFan_706553: Don't ever change, Khris!
  852. (08:42:10) Sven_Q45: One of the best parts: Control the ship!
  853. (08:42:36) liorean: 2PP have done such a good work, not just on their DF documentaries, but the other things I've seen from them too.
  854. (08:42:47) duploduplex: i think _those_ people would have latched onto any word or detail instead, KestrelPi
  855. (08:42:53) ElaineMarley: I love how there were all these different puzzle formats in BA
  856. (08:42:57) TimOfLegend: kestrelPi: yeah, maybe. In my mind, I was saying old school to differentiate from what telltale, Sword & Sworcery, Kentucky Route Zero were doing.
  857. (08:42:59) GameClubFan_706553: Is it going to be weird not having 2PP around all the time?
  858. (08:43:08) KestrelPi: (To me, BA is unquestionably old school but it seemed a point of contention for some people throughout the campaign)
  859. (08:43:16) TimOfLegend: Oh, they're still around!
  860. (08:43:21) GameClubFan_898889: How did the eyes on Marek's mask work?
  861. (08:43:25) lietu: TimOfLegend: what do you think about wadjet eye btw?
  862. (08:43:32) KhrisBrownDF: 2PP is so great - I wish we could make a doc about them. They are the kindest. <3
  863. (08:43:33) GameClubFan_706553: Did you lock them in and give them cake?
  864. (08:43:51) Cheeseness: To some people, "old school" meant pixel art
  865. (08:43:58) GameClubFan_861755 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  866. (08:44:10) Cheeseness: To others, it meant "writing stuff down on paper to solve puzzles"
  867. (08:44:20) KestrelPi: I guess I'm interested in the nature of the relationship between DF and 2PP at this point. Obviously it is better if they remain independent, but they seem like such a part of the furniture now.
  868. (08:44:39) GameClubFan_706553: To me BA is old and new school combined. Adventure gaming reached perfection in 1992, so why mess with a winning formula?
  869. (08:45:08) Sven_Q45: Old school is just the kind of the games... Period. :D
  870. (08:45:26) duploduplex: i love vella cutting him off
  871. (08:45:31) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: So with regards to the player representing the protagonists' intuition, is that what the Thrushmaster is also hoping to harvest from Vella?
  872. (08:45:33) Tinche: BA really pushes the envelope on art, no pixels here :)
  873. (08:45:36) GameClubFan_906225 [Mibbit@hide-BAF8EE67.customer.cdi.no] entered the room.
  874. (08:45:40) GameClubFan_898889: The thing is, old-school pixel art didn't look so blocky on old monitors. High-res painted art like Broken Age has is closer to "feel" of those games when they were new.
  875. (08:45:50) KestrelPi: me too, duploduplex, one of my favourite bits of dialogue in the game, there.
  876. (08:45:55) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: You should totally say that thing about every scene being appreciable as a painting
  877. (08:45:57) GameClubFan_906225 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  878. (08:46:10) TimOfLegend: I think there is enough pixel art out there. Other people have that covered. :)
  879. (08:46:32) Babar: this was also a bit of an annoying puzzle
  880. (08:46:41) Sven_Q45: It´s ok I played some too but I really don´t like the "new adventure games" like LIS or others.
  881. (08:46:41) GameClubFan_706553: PLEASE no more 8-bit games, she canna hold captain...
  882. (08:46:44) lietu: oh, one thing I was personally a bit annoyed about in regards to technical implementation was that you couldn't properly fast travel from one screen to another all the time, when randomly looking around for options for what to do next, what could be the next solution, the walking gets really tiring
  883. (08:46:47) TimeGentleman: *ahem* I sometimes enjoyed sitting back and just appreciating the scene in fron tof me as a piece of still art
  884. (08:46:47) Babar: for me at least
  885. (08:46:51) Tinche: MC has really distinctive and great art, too
  886. (08:46:55) TimeGentleman: (how was that, Cheeseness?)
  887. (08:47:09) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: Spot on (three pats on the back for you)
  888. (08:47:28) TimOfLegend: lietu: yeah, fast travel isn't as useful on scrolling rooms.
  889. (08:47:30) Conley: I'm out of here, later all!
  890. (08:47:31) Cheeseness: +points for the use of "tof"
  891. (08:47:35) Cheeseness: Thanks for coming Conley!
  892. (08:47:50) duploduplex: have a nice day/evening/night Conley
  893. (08:47:52) Cheeseness: I think all of Double Fine's games have had very distinct visual styles
  894. (08:47:57) KestrelPi: Pixel art is great. I use it in my own games because I can make it look good, and it's not an -easy- style to work in, you still need to know how to make it look consistent and good. But I'd prefer to see a game like this in high res, on balance.
  895. (08:48:07) Mimness: Totally not important gameplay-wise, but I was kind of bothered that I couldn't make all the computers smile again. And the one that exploded in Say's room traumatised me for life. >w<
  896. (08:48:10) TimOfLegend: Bye Conely!
  897. (08:48:26) lietu: I gotta admit I've not played nearly enough double fine titles (yet) .. but I absolutely love the visual style of broken age
  898. (08:48:33) GameClubFan_898889: Someone should make a techno song with Vella's "locked" "unlocked" lines.
  899. (08:48:34) Conley left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  900. (08:48:43) liorean: Old school means different things to different people. I would say there are three schools of games in general - old school (being limited by small and slow external media, like cartridges or floppy drives), recent school (still limited by external media, but larger and faster), and new school, which is limited not so much by the media but by the hardware Memory/CPU/GPU.
  901. (08:48:55) lietu: I can't remember not liking psychonauts' style either, but it was a while back when I last played it
  902. (08:49:06) duploduplex: yeah Mimness, made every screen i could see smile, after leaving the computer and walking around seeing sad screens, i tried going back to help them :(
  903. (08:49:10) Sven_Q45: Just hit the button a few times. Lock, unlock, lock, unlock. :D
  904. (08:49:11) TimOfLegend: Oh, I like pixel art! I loved S&S, Fez, thimbleweed, etc. I'm just saying that I don't see the need to add to that.
  905. (08:49:36) GameClubFan_706553: Any chance of a 1080p Psychonauts on console?
  906. (08:49:45) Mimness: Same here duploduplex
  907. (08:49:45) Cheeseness: Beyond "old school", people had the opportunity to become invested in the Double Fine Adventure before any concept of a game existed. People who expected a post apocalytpic sci-fi game were able to hop onboard alongside people who expected a noir styled romantic comedy
  908. (08:50:18) Tinche: hey Tim, could you ask Brad if we can get a Mac/Linux version of Iron Brigade now? :D
  909. (08:50:19) TimeGentleman: I love the hazy effects around this hexipal
  910. (08:50:40) Maddie left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  911. (08:50:48) KestrelPi: Yeah, I guess it's a tricky one. Everyone had some sort of malformed lump of a game in their head which was the game they were expecting, and Broken Age would never be that, even if it was some other great thing, like it is.
  912. (08:50:51) Permafry_42: this is the puzzle that keeps me from doing speedruns lo
  913. (08:50:53) TimOfLegend: 1080p psychonauts: could be done but it would be really expensive. Like $5MM as estimated by one programmer. because of how old the engine is and how deep we'd have to go on the characters to make them look good. And we'd have to re-animate a lot of cutscenes.
  914. (08:50:55) Syd: Iron Brigade on Linux would be great, I'd be able to play it with Cheeseness. :D
  915. (08:50:56) Permafry_42: *lol
  916. (08:51:01) Cheeseness: <3
  917. (08:51:02) TimOfLegend: I've tried to get that started multiple times though. :)
  918. (08:51:33) TimeGentleman: TimOfLegend call notch
  919. (08:51:42) lietu: well I gotta admit I didn't know what to expect from the game when I pledged, other than awesomeness.. and I think it delivered worth more than whatever the ridiculous amount of money I pledged was
  920. (08:51:46) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: Glad to hear that it's something that's been considered
  921. (08:51:54) Syd: Grats on getting the rights to Iron Brigade back from Microsoft, by the way. I'm glad to see it free of GFWL.
  922. (08:51:55) TimOfLegend: I think Notch is pretty sick of hearing the word "Psychonauts" at this point. :)
  923. (08:52:00) duploduplex: i think notch is too busy burning money in nightclubs
  924. (08:52:05) Cheeseness: Hah, poor bugger. I bet he hears it daily
  925. (08:52:06) TimeGentleman: pfft, impossible
  926. (08:52:19) TimOfLegend: syd: thanks! me too! That was getting in the way of us fixing a lot of bugs for people.
  927. (08:52:37) Cheeseness: It's not on Linux, but I'm glad to hear that DF was able to acquire the rights to it!
  928. (08:53:00) GameClubFan_706553: YIKES! Didn't realise that porting was so expensive. Darn. Anyhoo...
  929. (08:53:03) Syd: I was one of the victims of the "scrap stutter bug" that made IB basically unplayable, so I'm really happy to see that fixed now.
  930. (08:53:10) lietu: one thing I'm pretty happy about is how little the documentary spoiled of the game experience .. it was more like the other way, having watched the vague bits via the documentary made me go "OH, OH, I KNOW THIS BIT!"
  931. (08:53:14) TimeGentleman: I love that giggle she does!
  932. (08:53:15) CecilRousso: Iron Brigade was my only GfWL game in my Steam library. Now I don't have any. :(
  933. (08:53:17) TimOfLegend: syd: thanks for your patience!
  934. (08:53:42) Slade: I know i'd been waiting for fixes before delving into Iron Brigade. I'm super excited that you all have it back! Any plans for DLC? :D
  935. (08:53:51) Tinche: noooo
  936. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  937. (08:53:54) TimOfLegend: lietu: thanks! that was a battle the whole time! 2pp really wanted the docs to be meaty and full of info, and I wanted to blur everything. :)
  938. (08:53:58) TimeGentleman: TimOfLegend interesting that Vella views the hexipals as female
  939. (08:54:02) TimOfLegend: But they understood where we were coming from.
  940. (08:54:03) liorean: Iron Brigade was the only non-kinect DF game I didn't own. Now without GFWL I own it:)
  941. (08:54:21) KestrelPi: doesn't she mistake them for maidens at first?
  942. (08:54:21) Cheeseness: TimOfLegend: At what point did you decide that Gary needed to make a sacrifice?
  943. (08:54:24) GameClubFan_706553: Iron Brigade was the first game on X360 for me to play online.
  944. (08:54:34) lietu: TimOfLegend: oh I can see how those goals would battle against each other .. I was sort of wondering if there were going to be "locked parts" that would only be released post-release, but I guess that would've been a bit too much hehe
  945. (08:54:36) TimOfLegend: tg: Yeah! That's something I learned after having a daughter. She assumes that most things she sees are female, unless told otherwise.
  946. (08:54:43) duploduplex: im guessing its to do with how we tend to assign gender to genderless things TimeGentleman
  947. (08:55:09) TimeGentleman: Tim - huh, intersting!
  948. (08:55:21) Permafry_42: I'm a fan of bmo rules where things don't have gender unless they decide they do
  949. (08:55:24) GameClubFan_898889: People do that with races too. That's why white people always think anime characters look white.
  950. (08:55:47) Permafry_42: same with race
  951. (08:55:47) Mimness: TimeGentleman: Interesting that you find it interesting that Vella sees the hexipals as female. Did you find it interesting that Shay sees them as male? Laaaaaawl
  952. (08:55:59) Tinche: alright, I'm gonna call it a night. thanks everyone, especially the DF folks!
  953. (08:56:09) Permafry_42: cya tinche!
  954. (08:56:09) TimOfLegend: lietu: on the bluray I think all will be revealed. and unblurred.
  955. (08:56:09) duploduplex: goodnight Tinche
  956. (08:56:13) TimeGentleman: mimness - yes, I found it interesting that they both went with their own gender, but didn't ahev time to type that all out
  957. (08:56:16) lietu: oooh
  958. (08:56:16) TimeGentleman: :)
  959. (08:56:17) Tinche left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  960. (08:56:18) liorean: To be fair, it's impossible to distinguish white people from japanese in most anime and manga based purely on visuals
  961. (08:56:19) lietu: that's cool
  962. (08:56:37) lietu: I wonder if I ever got a bluray drive
  963. (08:56:37) ElaineMarley left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  964. (08:56:46) TimeGentleman: I read it as being about how we project ourselves onto stuff (or manybe how kids do)
  965. (08:56:50) TimOfLegend: bye tinche! Thanks for the questions!
  966. (08:56:52) Syd: Vella is so pumped to cause some large-scale destruction
  967. (08:57:03) Cheeseness: No remorse!
  968. (08:57:16) duploduplex: well yeah, vella knows explosions are awesome Syd
  969. (08:57:17) TimeGentleman: yeah, love how Vella's first instinct is MAKE BOMB
  970. (08:57:22) GameClubFan_383219 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  971. (08:57:24) ElaineMarley [Mibbit@hide-3F07F23.as13285.net] entered the room.
  972. (08:57:30) Sven_Q45: That short chat with Marek. :D
  973. (08:57:30) GameClubFan_706553: Vella would make a good publisher... :)
  974. (08:57:45) TimeGentleman: mimness found that reply less interesting :(
  975. (08:57:46) Permafry_42: She's hard core anti-estabishment
  976. (08:58:07) Cheeseness: So.... why "thrush"?
  977. (08:58:08) TimeGentleman: Some nice John Williams brass there
  978. (08:58:09) TimOfLegend: on killing gary: we purposefully didn't show him coming back in the end credits. some people wanted to, but I'm really against false deaths.
  979. (08:58:09) GameClubFan_706553 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  980. (08:58:11) GameClubFan_898889: I noticed that a lot of Let's Players interpreted the race(s) of Vella's family members in entirely different ways.
  981. (08:58:20) KhrisBrownDF: The Mogs have been stealing girls from towns for over 70 years, maybe longer
  982. (08:58:28) Ratlarva: "the thrush"? where did that come from. isn't that a bird
  983. (08:58:29) GameClubFan_983575 [Mibbit@hide-AD0550DA.range86-191.btcentralplus.com] entered the room.
  984. (08:58:34) TimOfLegend: I did one in BL with Ophelia and always felt bad about it.
  985. (08:58:40) Mimness: TimeGentleman: Haha, I just didn't want to get stuck on it for too long when there's so much other cool stuff going on :P
  986. (08:58:45) liorean: This is one of the few places where I felt the writing wasn't very good. It felt like the characters were talking about things we as players knew but they didn't really.
  987. (08:58:49) TimeGentleman: mim :)
  988. (08:58:58) TimOfLegend: Thrush: because it's this yeasty mouth infection that always sounded gross to me.
  989. (08:59:19) Cheeseness: "On accident" bugs me so much :D
  990. (08:59:20) duploduplex: i noticed a lot of reviews of Broken Age completely missed or just didnt touch on the double-meaning of the plot, though i thought it was pretty easily readable
  991. (08:59:37) TimeGentleman: Tim oh man, can't believe it IS that thrush. Assumed it was a clever reference to that bird's habits or something!
  992. (08:59:42) duploduplex: shame, missed out on some nice telling
  993. (08:59:54) Mimness: TimeGentleman: I didn't bat an eye when Shay assigned them male gender, but then when Vella thought they were female I came to the same conclusion you did about people projecting assumptions
  994. (08:59:59) Cheeseness: Whelp, thrush mystery solved. Moving on
  995. (09:00:14) Ratlarva: I liked that line about knives, and Jennefer hale does a good job with it
  996. (09:00:26) Vavassor: it's really cute he calls her sunshine
  997. (09:00:41) TimeGentleman: mimness same - I guess we took Shay's word for it as he lives there..!
  998. (09:00:45) TimOfLegend: tg: oh yeah! I mean it was! super clever reference to the eugenic tendencies of birds!
  999. (09:00:47) Sven_Q45: There is always a "bomb happy" mood with Vella. :D
  1000. (09:00:57) PONTO [Mibbit@hide-14AC1CEA.cpe.netcabo.pt] entered the room.
1001. (09:01:02) duploduplex: there was an article recently about the whiteness of witcher 3 Mimness, and how it's supereasy to not notice as a white person
1002. (09:01:05) TimOfLegend: Hey, Vella gets to be a killer okay?
1003. (09:01:07) TimeGentleman: Tim - those damn thrushes!
1004. (09:01:15) duploduplex: the mindset applies to just about every subset of class
  1005. (09:01:20) PONTO: Hi, everyone.
1006. (09:01:24) GameClubFan_983575: So what did Shay's parents think they were doing with Shay when they took the ship away. I've probably missed something.
1007. (09:01:26) Cheeseness: Which the African or the Eurpean thrush?
  1008. (09:01:27) duploduplex: hey PONTO
  1009. (09:01:29) scotty42 [Mibbit@hide-3A0B648F.natnow.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  1010. (09:01:30) Cheeseness: Hi PONTO
  1011. (09:01:35) Vavassor: howdy ponto!!
1012. (09:01:42) Sven_Q45: I think there is no appropriate translation for "bombenstimmung". :D
1013. (09:01:48) TimOfLegend: Hey, you guys, this has been super fun but I told my family I'd stop at 4:00. :)
1014. (09:01:56) scotty42 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  1015. TimeGentleman TimOfLegend
  1016. (09:01:58) GameClubFan_983575: Who does these two's voices?
1017. (09:01:59) duploduplex: have a nice day TimOfLegend
1018. (09:02:01) TimOfLegend: So I gotta go. I love the df game club!
1019. (09:02:03) TimeGentleman: awww, thanks for coming Tim
1020. (09:02:05) Cheeseness: Thanks so much for joining us, TimOfLegend. We really appreciate you making time!
1021. (09:02:06) millenomi: thank you for the whole thing!
1022. (09:02:08) Slade: Thanks for joining us TimOfLegend!
  1023. (09:02:08) millenomi: :D
1024. (09:02:13) Syd: Thanks for joining us, Tim!
1025. (09:02:18) Vavassor: oh word, thanks to coming and talking timoflegend!
  1026. (09:02:20) Sven_Q45: Thanks for joining Tim.
1027. (09:02:20) PONTO: Thank you for everything, Tim! :)
  1028. (09:02:20) KestrelPi: Tim
1029. (09:02:24) KhrisBrownDF: They are Grey Delisle (now Grey Griffin) and Kate Higgins
  1030. (09:02:30) KhrisBrownDF: BYE TIM
1031. (09:02:34) TimeGentleman: So, KhrisBrownDF, tell us some gossip about Tim
  1032. (09:02:38) KhrisBrownDF: haha
  1033. (09:02:39) GameClubFan_983575: Thanks Khris!
  1034. (09:02:40) millenomi: XD
1035. (09:02:40) TimOfLegend: By everybody! By Khris! See you soon!
1036. (09:02:40) Ratlarva: bye tim. thanks for the game. best 100 bucks I ever spent
1037. (09:02:42) KhrisBrownDF: Tim is the best
1038. (09:02:46) Sven_Q45: Will there be a DF boott on the GC?
1039. (09:02:51) ElaineMarley: Thank you TimofLegend for everything. Broken Age made me so happy
  1040. (09:02:53) TimeGentleman: softball!
  1041. (09:02:54) GameClubFan_983575: See you at e3...
  1042. (09:02:54) Sven_Q45: booth
1043. (09:02:55) TimOfLegend: I'M STILL HERE. KHRIS KNOWS NOTHING AND SHE LIES
  1044. (09:03:01) Cheeseness: :D
  1045. (09:03:01) TimeGentleman: ha ha!
1046. (09:03:11) CecilRousso: TimOfLegend: Thanks for this game, it's great!
1047. (09:03:11) Mimness: TimeGentleman: Hmmm good point. I figured it was probably more to do with the hexipals not being overtly assigned female gender characteristics (eyelashes, bows, whatever) so i assumed they were male by default too. Ok, I may have banged on about this long enough now.
  1048. (09:03:16) KhrisBrownDF: haha yay
  1049. (09:03:17) Permafry_42: i love the cutlery love triangle
1050. (09:03:24) Sven_Q45: Will there be a DF both on the GC, Tim?
1051. (09:03:35) TimOfLegend: Thanks! And thanks for backing and slacking and playing!
  1052. (09:03:36) Permafry_42: bye tim!
  1053. (09:03:43) Mimness: Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
1054. (09:03:47) BadAsp: By the way, Tim, will we see something about a good graphic adventure game other than just Day of the Tentacle?
1055. (09:03:47) Mimness: Come to Pax Aus!
  1056. (09:03:52) GameClubFan_983575: Get back to work!
  1057. (09:03:53) BadAsp: At E3?
1058. (09:03:57) TimOfLegend: sven: you mean booth? in germany? No, not this year. sorry!
1059. (09:04:01) Cheeseness: Ha ha ha, PAX Aus!
  1060. (09:04:07) Sven_Q45: Shame. :(
1061. (09:04:09) TimOfLegend: pax prime probably next!
  1062. (09:04:12) TimOfLegend: bye y'all!
  1063. (09:04:16) TimOfLegend: :D!
1064. (09:04:16) TimeGentleman: keep asking questions so he can't leave!
  1065. (09:04:18) millenomi: bye!
1066. (09:04:20) Sven_Q45: You miss the best party Tim. :)
  1067. (09:04:20) Syd: Bye!
1068. (09:04:21) SoundCreateUnit: TimOfLegend Thanks a lot, Tim! Have a wonderful rest of your day.
1069. (09:04:26) TimeGentleman: What's your favourite colour Tim?
1070. (09:04:27) TimOfLegend left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1071. (09:04:28) liorean: There's quite a bit of discussion about the racism or not of Witcher 3. Honestly, the total of dark skinned people in Poland is in the hundreds, it's not surprising. It's based on old slavic folklore, before the first dark skinned people would have been encountered there. And the game has different species, not just races, so it's natural that the depiction would be about them, not differently skin coloured humans.
  1072. (09:04:29) Sven_Q45: +`ll
  1073. (09:04:31) TimeGentleman: DAMN
  1074. (09:04:39) Stanto: thanks Cheeseness
1075. (09:04:50) Mimness: You offended him with your controversial question TimeGentleman
1076. (09:04:54) TimeGentleman: Seriously, though, KhrisBrownDF. Spill
1077. (09:05:06) GameClubFan_983575: Hey Khris, roughly how long did it take to record Shay and Vella? Compared to the others?
1078. (09:05:29) ianmatthew left the room (quit: Quit: Lingo: www.lingoirc.com).
1079. (09:05:48) Cheeseness: Stanto: You're welcome! I'm not sure what for though :D
1080. (09:06:10) KhrisBrownDF: TimeGentleman: It's totally boring, but the truth is that I've worked with Tim since 1990 and honestly have nothing bad to say about him. It sounds like total bullpucky, but he is the most thoughtful person.
  1081. (09:06:10) Sven_Q45: There is a triangle love between the cutlery Permafry_42?
1082. (09:06:11) GameClubFan_983575: Who is playing right now?
  1083. (09:06:18) Syd: Permafry_42 is the streamer
1084. (09:06:24) ElaineMarley left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1085. (09:06:36) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Are there any actors that you'd love to work with some day?
  1086. (09:06:42) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF awww ;)
1087. (09:06:43) Syd: And deserves approximately three pats on the back for streaming five sessions in a row. :)
  1088. (09:06:59) ElaineMarley [Mibbit@hide-3F07F23.as13285.net] entered the room.
1089. (09:07:03) GameClubFan_983575: I'm going to interpret "thoughtful" as rude and unholy! ;)
  1090. (09:07:28) Cheeseness: Ha ha
  1091. (09:07:33) KhrisBrownDF: haha
  1092. (09:07:34) GameClubFan_197368 [Mibbit@hide-49CB39B.lns20.cbr1.internode.on.net] entered the room.
1093. (09:08:10) KhrisBrownDF: about time, it took a long time to record Vella due to a bunch of non-work-related reasons
1094. (09:08:13) GameClubFan_983575: What are you like to work for Khris?
1095. (09:08:14) duploduplex: not being polish myself i can only go out from what ive read liorean, supposedly slavic mythology is incredibly spotty due to a big effort from the roman empire to erase records before christianity arrived. Beside that there was plenty of trading going on back and fourth from regions further south and east
1096. (09:08:14) Sven_Q45: So Vella is the difference of Tim? :D
1097. (09:08:20) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF do you have to consider balancing the voice acting with the music when you record?
1098. (09:08:22) duploduplex: also it takes place in a universe where people teleports
1099. (09:08:29) Vavassor: Broken Age II: The Fly
1100. (09:08:42) Cheeseness: Ha ha, Vavassor
1101. (09:08:58) KhrisBrownDF: Elijah worked on weekends to make himself available for us - he was amazing to us, really.
1102. (09:09:26) KhrisBrownDF: And he works super quickly and gives great performances - when I had a note, I could say a single word and he would get it immediately.
1103. (09:09:43) ElaineMarley left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1104. (09:10:03) GameClubFan_983575: I was an extra in one of Elijah Wood's films and he was so generous to the other extras, the only actor i have EVER seen be like that.
  1105. (09:10:17) ElaineMarley [Mibbit@hide-3F07F23.as13285.net] entered the room.
1106. (09:10:18) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: What kind of prompts do you give actors?
1107. (09:10:29) TimeGentleman: must heplp that elijah is an adventure game fan too - probably instinctively knows where to put the emphasis etc
1108. (09:10:35) KhrisBrownDF: I don't really have a "wish list" of actors to work with - I always just want to find the right voice for the role. I'm really focused on what will be best for the player experience.
1109. (09:10:49) KhrisBrownDF: Some games will cast people they want to work with or meet and I find that alarming
  1110. (09:11:06) GameClubFan_983575: Look at Haunt...
1111. (09:11:20) KhrisBrownDF: I'm always thinking about the game - it has to come first
  1112. (09:11:37) GameClubFan_983575: It was a good game.
1113. (09:11:41) Ratlarva: how does one get into voice acting anyway? what's the first step? shmooze up an agent?
1114. (09:11:57) Cheeseness: Ha ha, I have to look up this Haunt game. I worked on a prototype called Haunt. It didn't have any voices.
1115. (09:12:04) TimeGentleman: I discounted that solution for a while cos it didn't feel like the teleporters would be a short-cut
1116. (09:12:15) GameClubFan_983575 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1117. (09:12:23) liorean: duploduplex: The Polish were themselves a much oppressed people by the other Europeans, particularly those to the the west of them. The minorities of note which had even lower standing would have been roma or jews, and the first dark coloured people that would have been encountered would have been in the 1600s, which is way after the folklore was set
1118. (09:12:28) KhrisBrownDF: re: voice balancing with music, Pete is incredible about matching the vibe of the scene with the art - the voice will always match when Pete is the composer
1119. (09:12:59) KhrisBrownDF: and Cameron and Pete work on mixing - voice is so important in DF games that they're always very conscientious about it
1120. (09:13:01) ElaineMarley: Ratlarva voice actor dee bradley baker has a great site about that
1121. (09:13:09) BadAsp: KhrisBrownDF I have a question, since it doesn't seem that Telltale is likely to make one in the future, would you love to make a Sam and Max game again?
1122. (09:13:25) GameClubFan_197368 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1123. (09:13:35) Syd: I love these yarn pals
1124. (09:13:38) KhrisBrownDF: ElaineMarley: Yes! Dee's site is great for people who want to be voice actors
1125. (09:13:47) Permafry_42: the wave yarn pal is my fav
1126. (09:13:52) BadAsp: yarn pals are the cute :3
1127. (09:14:09) Permafry_42: there needs to be official yarn pals
1128. (09:14:25) KhrisBrownDF: Aren't they cute? I totally want BA merch
  1129. (09:14:32) millenomi: ^
  1130. (09:14:53) Cheeseness: AnnaTheRed made a couple
  1131. (09:14:57) Cheeseness: They're super awesome
1132. (09:15:12) KhrisBrownDF: I'd actually love to make a game based on the Enola Holmes books
1133. (09:15:16) Permafry_42: watch them become the next amiibos and people rob trucks of them lol
1134. (09:15:20) Mimness: KhrisBrownDF: Omg yes. Merch! All the want :3
1135. (09:15:21) liorean: duploduplex: In fact, I find the idea that the game is a very white game a projection of the american sentiments, where there are white people that were the victims of oppression in the culture and would have been the targets of the same kind of treatment, not blacks.
1136. (09:15:31) KhrisBrownDF: That's my total dream puzzle game right now
  1137. (09:15:51) millenomi: KhrisBrownDF: oh yeah! :O
1138. (09:15:55) Cheeseness: Oh! Can we make that happen>?
  1139. (09:16:09) millenomi: that sounds amazing :O
1140. (09:16:14) KhrisBrownDF: re: what kind of prompts/what am I like to work for: it's actor dependent - I adapt to whatever the actor needs
1141. (09:16:15) TimeGentleman: had never heard of those books!
1142. (09:16:20) Mimness: Enola Holmes would be cool!
1143. (09:16:34) liorean: And that ends my rant about accusations of racism in Witcher 3, as that has nothing to do with the game we're here for
1144. (09:16:35) millenomi: TimeGentleman: highly recommended.
1145. (09:16:40) PONTO: I guess I am leaving. In fact I was surprised the stream was still on when I arrived. Have fun, everyone. :)
1146. (09:16:40) Cheeseness: I want some Murder She Wrote adventure games
1147. (09:16:59) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF I was going to sve this, but wanted to ask how much coaching/line readings you had to give Alex as a non-pro, or what different techniques you needed to use with him
1148. (09:17:16) KhrisBrownDF: some of them need reassurance and lots of praise, some of them want single-word feedback only
  1149. (09:17:37) millenomi: *snort*
1150. (09:17:39) Sven_Q45: There were Cheese. But not real adventure games sadly.
  1151. (09:17:48) millenomi: I REGRET NOOOTHIING
  1152. (09:17:50) Mimness: I REGRET NOTHING!
1153. (09:17:51) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Do you ever deliver lines yourself?
  1154. (09:17:55) Cheeseness: NOTHINGS!!!
  1155. (09:18:03) millenomi: pop!
  1156. (09:18:06) millenomi: perfect.
1157. (09:18:07) KhrisBrownDF: haha I love that line
  1158. (09:18:09) millenomi: XD
  1159. (09:18:15) duploduplex: i love this
1160. (09:18:31) Cheeseness: I hope to have that kind of moment in my life someday
1161. (09:18:35) Vavassor: doofy expression yarn pile c:
1162. (09:18:37) TimeGentleman: I love that sign because the line "Banned. For. LIFE!" was one of my faves in Act 1
  1163. (09:18:39) Sven_Q45: Spaghetti :D
1164. (09:19:08) KhrisBrownDF: Tim wrote Alex to be as close to Alex's natural personality as possible, so working with him was really just, "be yourself."
1165. (09:19:10) PONTO left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1166. (09:19:19) millenomi: "like and subscribe!"
1167. (09:19:44) duploduplex: well im gonna go to bed, have a nice day/evening
  1168. (09:19:51) millenomi: goodnight!
1169. (09:20:08) Slade: KhrisBrownDF: Do you all ever do open casting for parts?
1170. (09:20:08) KhrisBrownDF: Because Alex understands studio tech, he totally understood mic'ing needs and how to speak well
1171. (09:20:15) duploduplex left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1172. (09:20:18) ElaineMarley left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1173. (09:20:44) liorean: I was disappointed we never got the see that pair of Merriloft girls.
1174. (09:20:54) Mimness: Who's Alex? It it... could it be... Shay from the future?!
1175. (09:21:09) Cheeseness: liorean: We get two glimpses of them
1176. (09:21:12) KhrisBrownDF: Alex is also a musician, so he understands melody and tones and how lines should sound when they are tonally correct - it gave him a great natural instinct for giving us the correct read.
1177. (09:21:16) Permafry_42: i love her wide eyes when she lies
1178. (09:21:20) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF that's cool. Presumably the relatively naturalistic style of performance in this game also helped him fit in with the other performances...
  1179. (09:21:32) KhrisBrownDF: Exactly :)
1180. (09:21:35) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: Were you here when Tim said that Vella did refer to Alex as Alex in the first act, but that was retroactively removed when the rest of the game was added
1181. (09:21:39) TimeGentleman: Like, he wasn't having to play an Edison
1182. (09:21:50) liorean: Cheeseness: When? I must have missed it.
1183. (09:21:53) TimeGentleman: Cheeseness, nope, missed it
1184. (09:22:17) Cheeseness: (07:29:35) TimOfLegend: Cheese: yeah we did make a mistake there. We accidentally included the name Alex in Vella's battle chatter. But if you played it recently, you'll notice we cut that out! Now she just says, "Hit it Dead Eye God!" :)
1185. (09:22:18) KhrisBrownDF: Someone asked about line reads - I avoid giving the actors line reads unless they're really failing hard
1186. (09:22:38) TimeGentleman: cheeseness, pfft, you faked that
1187. (09:23:04) millenomi: the magic of software updates.
  1188. (09:23:05) Sven_Q45: no
1189. (09:23:06) Cheeseness: Oh wait, you're right. Here's the correct comment from Tim
1190. (09:23:15) KhrisBrownDF: I always want to give them room to work first, and especially room to surprise me. They may deliver something natural for them that is different than how I hear it in my head and it may be better.
  1191. (09:23:15) Cheeseness: 07:29:35) TimOfLegend: Cheese: Dude, you're awesome <3
1192. (09:23:39) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF re. line-reads, if I were a director I'd be pissing actors off all the time by giving them line readings because emphasis in the wrong place winds me up so much when I'm wacthing telly or whatever
1193. (09:23:51) liorean: Obviously fake, Cheese. IT's missing the leading parenthesis
1194. (09:23:57) Vavassor: I feel like it's really nice how well alex's voice fits in the same game with some of these other characters' exaggerrated, cartoon-style voice acting
1195. (09:24:03) KhrisBrownDF: Slade: we cast through agencies in order to work with experienced actors who are SAG-AFTRA
1196. (09:24:33) Cheeseness: SAG-AFTRA sounds awfully like Mog Chothra
  1197. (09:24:36) Cheeseness: Coincidence?
1198. (09:25:03) KhrisBrownDF: Slade: However, if we can't find what we need, we'll expand that search. I listened to every cassette tape from talent we had in our "C box" (we rate actors as A B or C) and finally found Roy Conrad, who was Ben Throttle
1199. (09:25:16) Cheeseness: He was great
1200. (09:25:17) Sven_Q45: Now the thunderstorm is coming up. My video doesn´t reload...
1201. (09:25:30) GameClubFan_898889 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1202. (09:25:34) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF wow, Roy Conrad was in C box?!
  1203. (09:25:38) Sven_Q45: Finally! It works again.
1204. (09:25:56) liorean: You still have them on cassette tapes and not digitised?
1205. (09:25:59) KhrisBrownDF: like with Marek, we thought we wanted something, and then when we heard the audition, we were like, "OMG THAT'S IT!"
1206. (09:26:16) KhrisBrownDF: We cast Full Throttle in 1993 :)
1207. (09:26:17) TimeGentleman: liorean that was for Full Throttle in the 90s
1208. (09:26:23) KhrisBrownDF: Now everything is digital :)
  1209. (09:26:40) Sven_Q45: 1993? Wow release was 1995.
1210. (09:26:51) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: What aspects have changed the most across the course of your career?
1211. (09:27:00) Cheeseness: Sven_Q45: Casting usually isn't done at the last second
1212. (09:27:02) BadAsp: KhrisBrownDF I assume you cast Sam and Max around that same year, correct?
1213. (09:27:06) KhrisBrownDF: Most games take 2-3 years to make (if not more)
1214. (09:27:17) liorean: Ah, I thought it was about BA, but that you found a guy on an old cassette tape from Full Throttle time.
1215. (09:27:18) KhrisBrownDF: We cast Sam and Max in 1991-92
  1216. (09:27:25) BadAsp: Awesome!
1217. (09:27:34) Sven_Q45: Yes but I didn´t know VA is made so early.
1218. (09:27:42) KhrisBrownDF: Roy was in the C box b/c his demo tape was all commercials
  1219. (09:27:52) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF ahhh
1220. (09:27:57) Cheeseness: Hear that folks? Don't be all commercials
1221. (09:28:11) KhrisBrownDF: Yeah - we started recording Elijah in 2012 and his last session was this February
1222. (09:28:15) TimeGentleman: they be rappin like it's a commercial
1223. (09:28:24) Cheeseness: Can you imagine Ben Throttle doing a commercial?
  1224. (09:28:47) liorean: If it's a HD commercial, yes I can
1225. (09:29:01) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Do you play the games you work on?
1226. (09:29:12) KhrisBrownDF: It takes a super long time to record the voices - and casting takes longer depending on how many iterations we go through
  1227. (09:29:21) aaronscientiae [abrown@hide-89E3665B.socal.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  1228. (09:29:28) Cheeseness: aaronscientiae!
1229. (09:29:35) aaronscientiae: hey man. sorry i'm late.
1230. (09:29:52) aaronscientiae: hey, lots of good people here today.
1231. (09:29:55) liorean: You missed Tim...
1232. (09:30:03) Permafry_42: the best part of the game is coming up
1233. (09:30:18) KhrisBrownDF: most of the time, a lot of the character development happens when we hear auds and realize we want something different - or more one way or another
  1234. (09:30:26) millenomi: I love Grandpa here.
1235. (09:30:41) aaronscientiae: Hello KhrisBrown, I really admire your work!
1236. (09:30:42) KhrisBrownDF: although with Tim, he has such great instincts, we often know exactly what we want and it's just a matter of finding the right match
1237. (09:30:46) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Did it take much effort to get the right amount of sleeze into Walt'r's voice?
  1238. (09:30:54) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF example/anecdote please!
1239. (09:31:07) TimeGentleman: (re. character dev being affected by auds)
  1240. (09:31:13) KhrisBrownDF: I do play the games I make - and a ton of other people's
1241. (09:31:27) KhrisBrownDF: but I'm totally swamped most of the time, so it's hard to make time
1242. (09:31:32) Vavassor: whoever did that ACTION ZOOM there in that cutscene made the right choice hahahha
  1243. (09:31:34) Cheeseness: I know that feeling :(
1244. (09:31:35) aaronscientiae: what kind of face did he make for that scream? : )
1245. (09:31:39) KhrisBrownDF: I wish I had more time to play, but I'm super grateful to be slammed
1246. (09:31:39) Cheeseness: I hope you have time for Broken Age soon!
  1247. (09:31:47) KhrisBrownDF: me too!!
1248. (09:32:19) Mimness: KhrisBrownDF: Are you distracted by remembering the recording sessions when you watch/play the game? (I found I was remembering the documentary when playing the first act, so i didn't watch the voice recording bits before the second act came out)
1249. (09:32:31) aaronscientiae: this scene genuinely surprised me. I loved it.
1250. (09:32:41) KhrisBrownDF: Walt'r is played by Richard Horvitz, who is probably one of the funniest people you can work with
  1251. (09:32:53) GameClubFan_992751 [Mibbit@hide-83BF39A0.cpe.pppoe.ca] entered the room.
1252. (09:33:30) KhrisBrownDF: He is a great impressionist, so he'll often sing between takes - there are a ton of outtakes of him doing Elvis Presley and Katharine Hepburn during Psychonauts
1253. (09:33:30) aaronscientiae: I loved his Space Weaver performance.
1254. (09:33:47) KhrisBrownDF: and we're just DYING in the control room
  1255. (09:33:52) Cheeseness: http://i.imgur.com/57hNmaV.gif
1256. (09:33:59) KhrisBrownDF: because he's so good, and SO clever
1257. (09:34:10) liorean: The dead eye druids in this section would have been much more funny if the not being blind part hadn't been telegraphed already in Act 1
1258. (09:34:38) TimeGentleman: goddamn, why aren't all these outtakes and scratch performances on the website?!
1259. (09:34:40) KhrisBrownDF: He totally understood the ookiness of Walt'r and wanted to know how creepy to make it
1260. (09:35:11) GameClubFan_992751 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1261. (09:35:18) Cheeseness: To me, it comes across that Walt'r isn't aware of his creepiness, and it's just him emulating Harm'ny
1262. (09:35:46) TimeGentleman: cheeseness this would be a good time for you to say that thing abo- oh, nver mind
  1263. (09:35:49) KhrisBrownDF: Cheeseness: Exactly!
1264. (09:36:00) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: The time was right. I took it.
1265. (09:36:07) KestrelPi: Yeah, he even slips into a slightly different voice when doing harm'ny speak
1266. (09:36:24) Slade: Sadly I need to get going though. Thanks for coming KhrisBrownDF and thanks for organizing Cheeseness! Glad to have been around for the GC, and hope to see it pop up again soon!
  1267. (09:36:33) Cheeseness: Thanks Slade!
1268. (09:36:34) aaronscientiae: Aww, Pen. so good.
1269. (09:36:45) Cheeseness: It was great of Pen to drop by a couple of weeks ago
1270. (09:36:46) KhrisBrownDF: Slade: Have a good day!
1271. (09:36:52) Slade: Thanks, you too!
  1272. (09:36:54) Vavassor: bye slade!!
1273. (09:36:55) Slade left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  1274. (09:37:07) millenomi: stand-off!
1275. (09:37:09) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Were you in the office for the launch stuff?
1276. (09:37:09) aaronscientiae: yeah, can't wait to see what his little game come out like.
1277. (09:37:11) Permafry_42: my favourite scene of the game =D
1278. (09:37:20) Cheeseness: Oh wait, you said you were out of town
1279. (09:37:32) Cheeseness: This is great
  1280. (09:37:40) millenomi: aw <3
  1281. (09:37:42) Cheeseness: Peer pressure
  1282. (09:37:49) TimeGentleman: I can't figure out which one is Tim's sister!
1283. (09:37:50) Cheeseness: Overcoming peer pressure is awesome
1284. (09:37:56) aaronscientiae: (Hey Tim: spinoff!)
1285. (09:38:12) millenomi: the one on the right
1286. (09:38:14) KhrisBrownDF: Cheeseness: yeah, I was recording
1287. (09:38:23) millenomi: if I remember my Psychonauts voices right.
  1288. (09:38:29) millenomi: *snort*
1289. (09:38:30) Cheeseness: You didn't get to see THE THING then
1290. (09:38:31) Mimness: Hotel management and graphic design <3
1291. (09:38:38) KhrisBrownDF: Ginny is in green
1292. (09:38:41) TimeGentleman: ah, THE THING
  1293. (09:38:46) aaronscientiae: aww, yeah.
  1294. (09:38:48) Cheeseness: Good times
1295. (09:38:49) TimeGentleman: cool, thx KhrisBrownDF
1296. (09:39:23) Syd: I gotta AFK for 15-20 minutes. Be back later!
1297. (09:39:27) aaronscientiae: I love that girls voice.
1298. (09:39:31) Cheeseness: Get enough for everybody, Syd!
1299. (09:39:48) Vavassor: SICK triple flip! 1000x points
1300. (09:39:56) liorean: Twyla is probably my favourite side character
  1301. (09:40:00) millenomi: :)
  1302. (09:40:20) Sven_Q45: Like Tims daughters voice. :)
1303. (09:40:40) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: How much of the game have you come into contact with? You must know all of the plot, but dud you get familiar with many of the puzzles?
1304. (09:41:01) aaronscientiae: Khris, any tips for going from 'likes to do funny voices for friends' to brave enough to audition?
  1305. (09:41:15) aaronscientiae: "A clown perhaps". I died.
1306. (09:41:43) liorean: I love how his beard is made of fish scales
1307. (09:41:45) KhrisBrownDF: Cheeseness: Yes - I have to understand all the puzzles and all the ways they can be understood (or misunderstood)
  1308. (09:41:45) Mimness: I love Mr Huggy!!!!!!!
1309. (09:41:46) Cheeseness: If that's a The Cave reference, everybody is shuddering with the memory of the first time they discovered the clown and its nose
1310. (09:42:00) Cheeseness: lol, Mim just went "Ugh"
  1311. (09:42:01) Mimness: Augh! *shudder*
  1312. (09:42:01) Sven_Q45: What does he drink? :D
1313. (09:42:28) KhrisBrownDF: Cheeseness: That way we can be sure the reads are either "hinty" or don't give the answer away with their inflection
1314. (09:43:11) Cheeseness: How do you go about working through that stuff? Does Tim explain it to your himself, or do you read documentation?
1315. (09:43:13) KhrisBrownDF: aaronscientiae: Dee's site is super great for that
1316. (09:43:25) aaronscientiae: Thanks, i'll check it out.
1317. (09:43:31) GameClubFan_170755 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
1318. (09:43:36) KhrisBrownDF: cheeseness: Tim explains it
  1319. (09:43:48) Cheeseness: With a rubik's cube in hand?
  1320. (09:44:02) millenomi: :p
1321. (09:44:24) KhrisBrownDF: cheeseness: we almost always record before the art is done, so I have lots of questions
1322. (09:44:25) lietu: ok, it's getting close to 3am .. it was time for me to head to bed some time ago hehe .. good timezone everyone, and cya!
1323. (09:44:42) Cheeseness: Thanks for coming lietu!
1324. (09:44:48) Cheeseness: Nice to see you again
1325. (09:44:50) aaronscientiae: weird, that one still triggers even though you already have the suit
1326. (09:44:51) KhrisBrownDF: cheeseness: although quiet honestly when reading through the whole script, the puzzles and their solutions are pretty obvious
  1327. (09:44:56) liorean: No thanks
1328. (09:44:58) lietu: yea it was nice to be here again
  1329. (09:45:04) aaronscientiae: see ya.
1330. (09:45:12) KhrisBrownDF: cheeseness: I, too, must go when it is 5
1331. (09:45:16) lietu left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  1332. (09:45:17) Cheeseness: Alirghty
1333. (09:45:23) KhrisBrownDF: cheeseness: but I love hearting what everyone thinks
1334. (09:45:29) Cheeseness: In advance, thanks so much for joining us. It was a pleasure to have you along!
1335. (09:45:30) millenomi: the 'oh my' here XD
1336. (09:45:49) aaronscientiae: Yeah, it's awesome when we get the devs on the chats. I love the stories.
1337. (09:45:52) KhrisBrownDF: cheeseness: how long do folks play in DFCG?
1338. (09:45:57) Cheeseness: The spoon does have this little C3P0 aspect hey?
  1339. (09:46:12) KhrisBrownDF: DFGC derp
1340. (09:46:13) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Normally we got for 1 - 2 hours depending on how long people want to keep chatting
  1341. (09:46:28) KhrisBrownDF: cool
1342. (09:46:53) Cheeseness: This session has gone a bit longer though - it's a bonus session that we tacked on the end when we managed to wrangle yourself and Tim
1343. (09:46:55) liorean: All kinds of shells - even the DOS shell?
  1344. (09:47:02) aaronscientiae: bash shells
1345. (09:47:14) Cheeseness: This is likely the last time Game Club will happen in its current form. We're going on an extended hiatus after this
  1346. (09:47:21) KhrisBrownDF: awwww
  1347. (09:47:22) aaronscientiae: Aww.
1348. (09:47:25) Cheeseness: So I'm doubly glad we got you in :)
1349. (09:47:27) liorean: Man, anybody who knows how the pH scale works would find this section cringeworthy
  1350. (09:47:29) KhrisBrownDF: it's such a nice thing
1351. (09:47:41) aaronscientiae: I"m gonna try to talk cheese out of it. : )
  1352. (09:47:43) TimeGentleman: AWWW
  1353. (09:47:44) Cheeseness: It's been a wonderful experience
1354. (09:47:53) Cheeseness: Syd and I haven't really had a weekend off in 3 years though
1355. (09:48:01) aaronscientiae: Yeah, this is true
1356. (09:48:08) Cheeseness: Time for a break to reflect on things
1357. (09:48:18) aaronscientiae: maybe have some rotating guest hosts or something.
1358. (09:48:30) Cheeseness: We stopped during the last Amnesia fortnight, but I did Bad Golf all through that
1359. (09:48:50) TimeGentleman: We'll let you take one weekend off, Cheeseness, we're not monsters.
1360. (09:48:56) liorean: And all DF fans had other things to watch
1361. (09:49:02) aaronscientiae: timegent: ben or dan?
1362. (09:49:04) Cheeseness: aaronscientiae: I think that if we come back, it'll likely be something we run every couple of months and do one session per game rather than a couple of hours a week
1363. (09:49:18) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: Ponder that question
  1364. (09:49:25) KhrisBrownDF: Awwww Alex
1365. (09:49:27) Cheeseness: Who *really* is your favourite
1366. (09:49:30) TimeGentleman: They both have their pros and cons
1367. (09:49:40) Cheeseness: Poor Alex. He's on his own and has been for so long
1368. (09:49:43) aaronscientiae: I really liked those games.
1369. (09:50:00) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF dunno if you saw it but rockpapershotgun.com said that Alex gave the best performance of the game
1370. (09:50:08) aaronscientiae: Alex is really a standout for not being a voice actor going into it. Good job Khris!
1371. (09:50:09) liorean: Alex have the Rhombipals as companionship though
  1372. (09:50:21) KhrisBrownDF: whut. I didn't see that - that's so nice
1373. (09:50:25) TimeGentleman: aaron - thanks! I am Ben btw
1374. (09:50:30) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: Have you heard of Ben There, Dan That? (it's an adventure game that pays a moderate amount of homage to LucasArts' adventure games)
1375. (09:50:32) KhrisBrownDF: aw thank you aaronscientiae!
  1376. (09:50:32) aaronscientiae: howdy.
  1377. (09:50:36) Sven_Q45: But Alex did a good VA!
1378. (09:50:50) KestrelPi: Alex did great. But rockpapershotgun seem to say a lot of things, lately ;)
1379. (09:51:03) Mimness: I think Cheeseness wants a suit like that
1380. (09:51:08) TimeGentleman: well we don't need to get into that, KP!
  1381. (09:51:09) Cheeseness: Oh yeah
1382. (09:51:16) liorean: I love how a blue and a green robe tuned into a yellow feathered protection suite
1383. (09:51:27) aaronscientiae: did it take a lot for him to relax and do lines or was he pretty natural?
  1384. (09:51:39) Mimness: I really love the tree's voice!
1385. (09:51:46) aaronscientiae: that sludgey pick up sound effect is
  1386. (09:51:51) aaronscientiae: lucasarts days?
1387. (09:51:58) aaronscientiae: sounded very DOTT
1388. (09:52:02) KhrisBrownDF: haven't heard of Ben there, Dan that, but will totally look it up now
  1389. (09:52:16) TimeGentleman: good work, Cheeseness :)
1390. (09:52:23) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman is one of the developers (and one of the protagonists) of Ben There, Dan That
1391. (09:52:26) aaronscientiae: aww, poor kitty
1392. (09:52:32) TimeGentleman: KhrisBrownDF if you want a Steam key for it let me know :)
  1393. (09:52:32) Cheeseness: Also, I get $20 per referral
1394. (09:52:33) KhrisBrownDF: I love that you know the old SFX!
  1395. (09:52:34) Cheeseness: lol
  1396. (09:52:44) KhrisBrownDF: I will buy it
1397. (09:52:44) Mimness: i love that line too! "Candleholder candleholder candleholder" <3
1398. (09:52:50) liorean: How would the candles look that are held by that candle holder?
  1399. (09:52:51) KhrisBrownDF: but thank you :)
  1400. (09:52:52) TimeGentleman: even better!
  1401. (09:52:54) Cheeseness: (I don't really)
  1402. (09:53:01) Mimness: THEY'D LOOK AWESOME
1403. (09:53:15) KhrisBrownDF: Alex was relaxed
1404. (09:53:19) aaronscientiae: reminds me of "bonding bonding, 1 2 3, you can do it, bonding"
1405. (09:53:20) Sven_Q45: Codes for Ben there dan that? :)
  1406. (09:53:38) Cheeseness: Sven_Q45: The code is 12345
1407. (09:53:44) TimeGentleman: if Khris can buy it, so can you Sven!
  1408. (09:53:46) Sven_Q45: löl
1409. (09:53:51) aaronscientiae: that's the kind of combination an idiot has on their steam account...
1410. (09:53:52) KhrisBrownDF: I think he is totally fearless - I was shy about meeting him because I have so much respect for his inventive genius brain
1411. (09:53:55) aaronscientiae: change the code to my steam account.
  1412. (09:54:04) TimeGentleman: SPACEBALLS
1413. (09:54:17) millenomi: the cow udder.
  1414. (09:54:19) aaronscientiae: :The videogame
  1415. (09:54:20) millenomi: IIRC.
1416. (09:54:32) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: Somebody got it \o/
1417. (09:54:40) aaronscientiae: her voice is great too.
1418. (09:54:52) Sven_Q45: I´ll ad Ben there dan that sometimes. Too much other games lying around unplayed. :D
1419. (09:54:58) millenomi: every. single. performance. in this game, darn it.
  1420. (09:55:00) Sven_Q45: add
  1421. (09:55:01) millenomi: <3
  1422. (09:55:01) aaronscientiae: there's a sequel to it also.
1423. (09:55:09) KhrisBrownDF: Alex was super gracious and we ended up talking about art and architecture - it was awesome.
1424. (09:55:10) TimeGentleman: cheeseness aaron got it too, he was doing the luggage lines
  1425. (09:55:11) aaronscientiae: "space pencil"
1426. (09:55:23) Cheeseness: You haven't played it, Sven_Q45? The only thing that it isn't better than is a Magnum PI game that was never released
1427. (09:55:25) TimeGentleman: Sven good good
1428. (09:55:31) Cheeseness: Oh man, I was looking for luggage lines but totally missed them
  1429. (09:55:32) KhrisBrownDF: millenomi <3 <3 <3
1430. (09:55:45) Cheeseness: Because I was scanning for the word luggage
  1431. (09:56:06) Sven_Q45: Is there a retail to buy? ;)
1432. (09:56:14) Cheeseness: So that they're sneakily hidden in the chat log, here's the thread for our playthrough of Broken Age http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/17001/
1433. (09:56:19) aaronscientiae: how long did it take to get superconductive gyroscopic hydrocam right?
1434. (09:56:38) aaronscientiae: "intergalactic proton powered electrical, tentacled, advertising droids"
1435. (09:56:39) Cheeseness: And here's a thread about the hiatus that we'd love to get people's comments on (tell us what you appreciate(d) about Game Club!) http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/17214/
1436. (09:56:50) aaronscientiae: "wacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tube men"
1437. (09:57:08) Cheeseness: Khris said earlier that Elijah nailed it
  1438. (09:57:13) aaronscientiae: nice
1439. (09:57:17) Sven_Q45: I want to buy Ben there... retail.
1440. (09:57:18) Cheeseness: Then Tim said it used to be a non-conductive one, but they changed it
1441. (09:57:53) Cheeseness: KhrisBrownDF: How did Alex go with the superconductive gyroscopic hypercam?
1442. (09:57:57) aaronscientiae: how much fun was it for those guys to come up with knot names....
1443. (09:58:01) TimeGentleman: Sven - ha ha, thaat would be amazing
1444. (09:58:12) KhrisBrownDF: We laughed a lot with both guys about the names
1445. (09:58:29) KhrisBrownDF: EW would catch himself and fix it
1446. (09:58:33) aaronscientiae: I like that the knots are a finite-state machine when you make a mistake or improve things.
1447. (09:58:47) millenomi: unravel the sweater
  1448. (09:58:50) Sven_Q45: TimeGentleman "Dan" I´ll buy that too,.
1449. (09:58:58) KhrisBrownDF: and Alex did the thing where you work through it slowly verbally and then when we were rolling he nailed it
  1450. (09:59:14) Cheeseness: Nice
  1451. (09:59:17) millenomi: fighting snakes
  1452. (09:59:30) Permafry_42: see red bot like i said
1453. (09:59:31) Cheeseness: I like how these instructions sound like they could be code
1454. (09:59:35) aaronscientiae: Anyone here gotten the "lets get this fun over" achievement yet?
  1455. (09:59:39) aaronscientiae: REDBOT!
  1456. (09:59:44) Permafry_42: working on that one
  1457. (09:59:57) Permafry_42: the achievement i mean
  1458. (10:00:10) millenomi: XD
1459. (10:00:13) aaronscientiae: who did the fish voice?
1460. (10:00:18) Mimness: I have a few "big hoarding junk piles" in my house...
1461. (10:00:19) CecilRousso: Oh man, that fish.
1462. (10:00:24) CecilRousso: Was just about to ask the same thing. :)
  1463. (10:00:26) KhrisBrownDF: Richard Horvitz
  1464. (10:00:27) Cheeseness: That fish :D
1465. (10:00:27) millenomi: this is such a tragic scene, but
  1466. (10:00:30) millenomi: _fish_
  1467. (10:00:32) aaronscientiae: i should've known
  1468. (10:00:35) Sven_Q45: Fishtastic!
1469. (10:00:36) aaronscientiae: I think it was in the credits
1470. (10:00:45) TimeGentleman: hey, is that the Loom seagull with a studded collar on?
  1471. (10:00:55) aaronscientiae: where?
1472. (10:01:04) Cheeseness: In the pile of junk?
