  6. Hello,
  7.
  8. All this shit on 4chan with the mod started over the weekend while Moot was in attendance of the XOXO Fest. Anita Sarkeesian was speaking there along with many others. XOXO Fest is "is an annual arts and technology conference held in Portland, Oregon. It has described itself as celebrating creativity and innovation[1] in forms it considered alternative or disruptive to the prevailing social or professional context ("democratizing media and innovation"). The conference was founded in 2012 by Andy Baio and Andy McMillan with funding from prepaid tickets and other contributions via Kickstarter, and it was described by the New York Times as an "experimental" conference."

  25.
  26. Taylor Hatmaker, a writer for Dailydot.com was in attendance: http://www.dailydot.com/technology/death-failure-xoxo-2014/
  27.
  28. Excerpt from her article:
  29.
  30. "Top minds from various corners of the industry came to steep in the event’s intellectual, playful juices. Among them: Matt Cutts, Google’s SEO demigod, who tweeted out for a decent place to eat. 4chan founder Christopher "moot" Poole milled around.
  31.
  32. Women were in attendance and on stage too. Among them, Gina Trapani, the well-loved founder of Lifehacker, currently working on ThinkUp with Anil Dash; Erin McKean, founder of Wordnik and the former editor of the Oxford New American Dictionary; Anita Sarkeesian, founder of the vlogs Feminist Frequency and Tropes vs. Women—and currently a target at the swirling center of the misogynistic clusterfuck known as "Gamergate."
  33.
  34. One night, at the tabletop gaming event of all things, an attendee got booted out for “being creepy." Later, in line for coffee at XOXO's warehouse HQ, I heard the full story: Some guy insisted on being the “village rapist” in a game of Werewolf, a classic roleplaying game. He was reported by another male attendee and had his XOXO attendee badge yanked moments later. Earlier that day, Sarkeesian had given her powerful personal testimonial of online harassment. It was an ugly torrent of hate—one that seemed to genuinely shake male attendees, more than a few of whom who brought it up as the most powerful moment from the conference."

  92. From 2013: "I don’t personally like FPSes [first person shooters, like HALO] because I think they’re lazy. Because all you can do is point and pull a trigger and cause death and injury. There’s just not much you can do with that mechanic…. It’s possible to enjoy problematic things, and it’s possible for problematic things to exist and be enjoyed by people that aren’t me. So I don’t know if I would want to legislate the way that games are made so much as I want more kinds of games to be made by more people."

  94. From 2014:
  95. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/224400/Gamers_dont_have_to_be_your_audience_Gamers_are_over.php
  96. From 2014: "You don’t want to ‘be divisive?’ Who’s being divided, except for people who are okay with an infantilized cultural desert of shitty behavior and people who aren’t? What is there to ‘debate’? … When you decline to create or to curate a culture in your spaces, you’re responsible for what spawns in the vacuum. That’s what’s been happening to games… “Gamer” isn’t just a dated demographic label that most people increasingly prefer not to use. Gamers are over. That’s why they’re so mad."

The firm is currently invested in 156 companies, which includes its own portfolio of 90 companies and 66 start-ups through its funding of Y Combinator's Start Fund. Andreessen Horowitz's investments span the mobile, gaming, social, ecommerce, education and enterprise IT (including cloud computing, security, and software as a service) industries."

  149. Snippets from the first article:
  150. http://www.wordyard.com/2014/09/17/xoxo-and-the-fierce-urgency-of-nice/
  151.
  152. "You could glimpse what that might look like in the talk by Anita Sarkeesian, the feminist videogame critic whose incisive work has attracted a swarm of harassers and abuse. At XOXO Sarkeesian pointed her analytical scalpel at the dishonest methodology of her critics — no, critics isn’t the right word for them, because there seems to be no actual criticism in their response, just anger, misogyny, and lies. Sarkeesian has every right to be angry back at them, but she keeps her cool and lets the abusive comments and impersonations speak for themselves. I wouldn’t call her “nice” — more like professional and brave and determined to do her work. But this feels close to what McKean was talking about.
  153.
  154. I suppose it was inevitable that Sarkeesian-haters and “men’s-rights” types would turn up on Twitter at the #xoxofest hashtag, claiming to be present at the conference and misquoting her talk. One guy even showed up in person, handing out leaflets and attempting to engage with festivalgoers at the goat field. Cruelty to goats!
  155.
  156. No amount of nice is going to make a difference in this sort of conflict. You are unlikely to win a reasonable argument with a fanatic, and you probably won’t even be able to have one."
  157.
  158. "But the handful of trolls on Reddit or 4chan, seething in their ressentiment, are a nasty sideshow to a far more important process unfolding — the one where we come to accept that the intersection of art and tech is a culturally important place. A place worth defending from idiots. A place where we ought to listen when smart people tell us who’s being left out and what voices need to be heard. A place that we can renovate and change once we understand what needs to be done.
  159.
  160. You don’t need a drone to see that. Then again, a drone might get you a better picture."
  161.
  162. Take it for what you will.
