SVFOE - The Safe and the Unlucky

It was a normal morning at Echo Creek's Academy, well as normal as it can be since a certain Princess from another dimension moved into the house of ironically the most normal resident in town.

And speaking of those two! A dimensional rift suddendly appared at the Academy's gym and from it jumped out none other than Safe-Kid extraordinaire: Marco Diaz, wearing his now trademark red hoodie.

"Wow, that was by far our wackiest and most intense adventure yet! and it also was weirdly brief." Said Marco turning towards the portal from which Princess of Mewni, Star Butterfly was partially leaning out.

"Yeah, I havent had that much fun in years! However that comes at a price, I reeeaaaaally should help clean up the mess we made back there, I mean when the bo-"

"No need to go into details about what happened in the adventure we just had, Star! I was there to see it." Said Marco interrupting Star's needless exposition.

"Oh right, right." Star replied. "The point is, I need to get back in there and help cleaning up the mess we helped to cause."

"Well I can help with the cleaning too! let's get to it!" Said Marco still feeling the excitement from the adventure they just had.

"You may wanna sit this one down, you see... the mess is big enough we will have to transport the waste using Mewninan means... well to put it simple the things we will use are like trucks... but alive... and if you can't handle riding on Earth vehicles I think it's best for everyone you don't subject yourself to this." Said star looking a bit serious for a change.

"P-point taken, I guess i will be staying behind then, that's okay with me but I can't shake the feeling this is a weirdy convenient situation to have me at school without you around." Said marco scratching his head.

"I know, right!? but regardless I will be back in a few hours, have fun!" Said star waving goodbye at Marco and then dissapearing into the portal.

"oh well, it's back to my old boring self I guess..." Said Marco letting a loud sigh of dissapointent for having to have a normal Marco-style evening without Star, felt specially bad after coming from their most exciting adventure yet.

"I-I know I can do this! I just have to keep trying!"

Marco suddendly heard a voice, it seems there was someone at the Gym, which was weird cause it was not gym class time.

"Sabrina?" Said Marco at noticing the voice he heard belonged to unluckiest cheerleader in school.

"Huh? WAAAH--!" Sabrina shouted as she was in the middle of trying to do a cartwheel, Marco's voice distracted her which made her lose balance and go crashing right into a group of stepladders that were in the Gym.

"OH MY GOD, SABRINA ARE YOU OKAY!?" Said marco rushing to where the disastrous crash happened.

Thankfully it was nothing serious, just a few scratches and bruises, Marco being always prepared applied some first aid and bandages to Sabrina's wounds.

"You know, I heard rumors about you being a magnet for accidents, but I never imagined it would be THIS bad." Said marco while cleaning one of the scratches on Sabrina's arm.

"Ow, OW!! Y-yeah... but this is nothing really, last time i tried to do a somersault i ended breaking my leg, everytime I don't break a bone during one accident I consider myself lucky." She said with a smile that was near impossible to tell if it was genuine or fake.

"Lucky you say..." Said Marco looking at the mess her failed cartwheel attempt caused and all the bandages he had to use on her. "But what are you doing practicing here alone anyway?" Marco asked.

"Oh... well..." Said Sabrina clearly trying to avoid the topic.

"Let me guess, its Brittney, isnt it?" Said Marco as he finished applying one last bandage.

"B-But how did you...!?" Said sabrina looking very nervous and somewhat scared.

"When it comes to cheerleaders, the problem is ALWAYS related to Brittney Wong." Marco quickly added. "Whenever Ed seems to have a problem, is pretty much always for something related to Brittneys demands, same with a few of the other cheerleaders i have spoken to."

"I... see." Said Sabrina looking down. "so even someone as enthusiastic for cheerleading as Ed can get bothered by Brittney's demands..."

"So what does she want this time?" Marco asked.

"Well she wants me to learn how to do cartwheels for our new routine, which normally would not be a problem, except for the fact that every time I try to do it I cause some kind of accident... a-and she wants me to be able to do it by t-tomorrow or... or she'll get m-me kicked off the team..." Sabrina starts sobbing and trembling a bit trying to not burst into tears.

"Shhh... say no more." Said Marco gently placing his hand on her shoulder. "You know what? I am very good at keeping Star from hurting herself and others, usually with fire, so how about I help you practice your cartwheels and keep you safe from any accident that may occur?"

"Eh...?" Said Sabrina still trying to keep herself from crying. "Y-you mean it? But..."

"No buts!" Said Marco doing a hand motion. "I actually dont have to worry about star accidentally destroying the school today, so I can dedicate my time to keep you from breaking an arm or a leg, And Besides, Echo Creek's Safest Kid teaming up with Echo's Creek most accident prone girl? that stuff writes itsel! like the plot of a bad fanfic!"

"Thats a very odd thing to say..." Sabrina complained.

"A-Anyway!" Said Marco clearing his throat. "if I can deal with Star-level disasters, how hard can it be to keep you from having simple practice accidents?"

Famous last words Marco, after picking up the ladders which Sabrina had crashed into, the pair started practicing, Marco grabbed some mattresses from the Gym's supply and told Sabrina to try to aim for it if she lost balance, needless to say, it didnt work at all, no matter what or how many mattresses Marco set up, Sabrina would always gravitate to any object that would hurt her, be it gym equipment or Marco Himself.

"OH MY GOD, SERIOUSLY!? ITS JUST A CARTWHEEL! HOW CAN SOMEONE MESS UP THIS BAD!?" Marco yelled in despair after Sabrina landed in the ONE spot that didnt had a mattress on.

"I-I'm so sorry Marco!" Sabrina apologized. "This is just how it always is for me, no matter what I do I can't avoid hurting myself and causing accidents."

"Okay time for Plan B!" Marco said rising his fist in the air. "It's clear your case is more extreme than I imagined so it will require more serious methods."

"We could always try practicing somewhere else, someplace more safe." Sabrina suggested.

"Oh nononono!" Marco quickly shot down the idea. "I dread to think the things that may happen if we go to somewhere else with unknown factors, your bad luck is legendary missy, here at least I know what to expect and it's a controlled environment, I am not taking that risk, instead I have a plan to make it safer here."

Marco then proceeded to remove all matresses except one, then told Sabrina to try doing a cartwheel, she looked confused but decided to trust Marco and do it, she of course lost balance and fell.

"HYAH!!" Marco yelled and in a flash Karate kicked the mattress into place and Sabrina fell on it safely.

"Huh..? I'm not hurt...?" Sabrina said feeling the soft matress instead of the pain from falling to the ground or crashing into something.

"Yes! it worked!" Said Marco doing a fist pump. "It's gonna be tiresome but this way I can make sure you don't hurt yourself while practicing, that way we can start making some actual progress.

"T-T-T-T-THANK YUU SHO MUUUUCCCHHH!!" Said Sabrina with the most over the top tearful yet joyful face.

They then continued practicing, many falls and mattress kicks were to be had, it continued for about an hour, Marco was visibly getting very tired, which made Sabrina try even harder to get it right, they both could notice she was slowly making progress, so all the hard work was worth it.

After about 2 hours of practice they decided to take a little break, Sabrina was sitting on a matress resting and Marco went to get some refreshments.

"Here you go!" Said Marco as he entered the Gym and tossed a box of juice to Sabrina.

"I got it! I go--ah---ah!" Said Sabrina as the box bounced off her fingers over and over and as she tried to catch it and ended crashing into a cart filled with Soccer balls"

"Seriously...?" Said Marco with a blank Expression.

"I'm okay!" Replied Sabrina. "No Broken bones! I got lucky!" She said once again smiling while being clearly in pain which made it near impossible to tell if her smile was genuine.

"Lucky she says..." Marco once again thought to himself, still finding unbelieveable that she can consider that anything close to "lucky".

Marco proceeded to bandage Sabrina's wounds caused by the litte juice incident, Marco was shocked that he actually ran out of bandages, as the safe kid he always carries a metric ton of them with him, so Sabrina for sure was on a level of her own to causing herself injuries.

"I been meaning to ask." Said marco while drinking his juice. "seeing how you are so prone to accidents, why would you decide to be a cheerleader? All those stunts you guys have to do are just ASKING for accidents to happen, in fact I think everytime I see the cheerleader team during a football game you are always badly injured, I do admit, I admire you still going out there despite having a broken arm or leg, but why? you love cheerleading that much?"

Sabrina stopped drinking her juice and remained silent for a brief moment.

"Is not that I love cheerleading." She replied. "Is that Is the only thing I have..."

Marco looked confused. "The only thing you have?" he asked.

"... I am a nobody Marco, being a cheerleader is the only thing that gives me any kind of social status... if I stop being a cheerleader I would be nothing, It's my whole identity... Sabrina the Cheerleader... being a cheerleader lets me get invited to parties, lets me being accepted... I... I even wear my uniform whenever possible... t-thats why I am so scared to be kicked out of the team..."

Marco was clearly very sad and dissapointed at hearing Sabrina say that, yet he just remained silent.

"That's the one." Sabrina said cutting the silence.

"Huh?" Said marco confused.

"Thats the same face Andrea made when she asked me the same thing, she was very dissapointed in me, don't worry Marco I don't blame you, and I also understand if you don't want to keep helping me practice, You already did more than enough, and for that you have my deepest gratitude." Said Sabrina looking at the juicebox in her hand.

Marco took a deep breath. "I understand how you feel." He said.

Sabrina moved her eyes towars marco but still keeping her face down.

"I am the same... Or better said, I WAS the same, I am Marco Diaz, my most defining trait is that I wear a red hoodie!
So I always felt that the only thing that gave me an identity was being the "Safe Kid", I kept saying that I didn't like being called that but it was a lie, I felt I had to be the safe kid to not be a nobody, without it i would be nothing, but then I met Star, I started going to dangerous adventures and not only discovered a lot about myself, but also that my "safe" personality was really something important, it was a part of myself, it helped me keep Star and others safe, and I realized it was not just a mask I use to not feel worthless, but it's who I really am. I am Marco Diaz and I love being safe!"

Sabrina hugged her legs to her chest and lowered her head into them.

"And don't be silly, I said I would help you didn't I? And Marco Diaz always keeps his word!" Said Marco hitting his chest with his right fist.

"Thank You." Said Sabrina still hugging her legs and hiding her face.

Suddendly they heard the school bell ring.

"Eeek!!" Sabrina got startled by the bell which made her break out of her cocoon like position and jump behind Marco.

"Ah crud! I think theres gym class next!" said Marco trying to not laugh at Sabrina's little act, but he was glad at least the mood now seemed more cheerful. "well we will have to keep practicing after they are done, also we skipped a ton of classes so we should take the chance to at least assist to a few until we can use the gym again."

"S-Sure!" Said Sabrina still a little startled.

The school halls were crowded with students going to their respective classes, Marco and Sabrina were each going to their own ones when Marco saw a familiar face walking in their general direction, the poor kid froze in place which Sabrina instantly noticed.

"Hey, Marco! Hey, Sabrina!" Said the familiar face.

"Hi, Jackie!" Sabrina replied

"H-H-H-Hi, J-J-J-Ja..." Marco tried to reply but Jacke was already far away from them.

"Well, that was interesting." Said Sabrina seeing the nervous wreck formerly known as Marco Diaz.

"Aww I did it again..." Said marco hanging down his head in shame. "Even if we now say Hi to each other I can never talk to her yet..."

Sabrina thought this was the most adorable thing she ever seen, it seems she always had a cupid side to her but it was not untill she saw the absurdly lovestruck Marco that a wish to make something about it was born into her.

Not only that, Marco had helped her so much, if only there was something she could do to pay him back, but what could she do? Is there really something she can do to help Marco with this little problem she just realized he has? Then she looked down and saw her cheerleading uniform, an idea was born in her mind, but it was too crazy... and dificult, and she would have only one chance, but she for the first time felt real motivation and desire to do something.

"Marco!" She suddendly yelled.

"EEEK!" Marco jumped back terrified, in fact looking very much like Sabrina when she gets spooked.

"I need you to do something for me." Sabrina said looking very serious and confident, which weirded Marco out to no end, but he was listening regardless. "I need you to try to talk to Jackie again when she walks by the hall after next class, please."

"Eh!?" Said Marco shocked at the request." W-well I can try but..."

"Just do it please!" Said Sabrina as she rushed away to her class.

Marco was just left confused in the hall, in the end he just walked to his class and waited till it was over not really being able to focus at all.

Some time passed, the bell rang again, and the halls started getting filled with students going to their classes, marco rushed to the hall were Jackie would walk by and waited there, he wondered why Sabrina asked such a weird request but he had little time to think about it cause Jackie Lynn Thomas, the girl of his dreams was walking his way!

"Hey, Marco!" Jackie said, she now always greeted Marco when they met in the halls, but Marco never actually started a conversation with her.

And once again it seemed the same as always, Marco tried hard but could not get a word out, he was about to give up but suddendly he heard a whistle down the hall, he turned around and saw Sabrina, standing at the end of the hall holding her pom-poms.

Before he could react something amazing happened. Sabrina dashed and performed a cartwheel into a beautiful somersault jump, which she ended by landing in a High V pose.

Marco was stunned and filled with joy and pride, but just about he was going to dash towards her to congratulate her, she went into a Broken T pose and then spread her arms revealing a banner that was hidden in one of her Pom-Poms.

The banner read "U CAN DO IT 2!" in crudely drawn letters.

Marco froze for a second and then his expression changed to a determined one, he instantly turned around and quickly caught up with Jackie.

Sabrina then quickly hid in the corner, all that determination and confidence she had before just evaporated the second Marco started talking to Jackie, she was a nervous wreck, trembling and bitting her nails of both hands, what was gonna happen!? will it end badly!? She could not see very well all the way from the corner so she just could wait and be terrified of a bad result.

Then she saw Jackie walk away and Marco started walking down the hall, his face was down, she feared the worst! "Oh no! Oh no! OH NO!" was all she could think, did it backfire!?

Marco finally reached the end of the hall, Sabrina was just pale as a ghost staring at him, completely dreading what he would say.

"... I got it." Marco said still looking down at his hands.

"H-huh...?" Sabrina asked.

"Her number..." Marco added.

"Wh-what...?" Color started to return to Sabrina's face as she started realizing what was actually going on.

"SHE GAVE ME HER NUMBER! I GOT HER NUMBER!" Said marco showing Sabrina his phone with Jackie's number registered with tears of joy streaming down his face.

"YOU GOT IT!, YOU GOT IT! YOU GOT IT!!" Sabrina started quickly jumping up and down screaming and her face illuminated with pure joy.

"I GOT IT! I GOT IT! I GOT IT!" Marco did so too in unison to Sabrina, then proceeded to faint.

"EEEEK!! MARCOOOO!!" Sabrina said at seeing Marco just fall like a lifeless body, thankfully he was clearly fine, as he was hugging his phone tightly despite passing out.

A few minutes later once Marco recovered...

"Phew... with how happy I was from getting Jackie's number I totally forgot to congratulate you for mastering those cheerleading stunts!" Said marco. "That was amazing! I barely could believe my eyes."

"I can hardly believe it either" Replied Sabrina. "It was a stupid idea I had, when I saw you struggling to talk to Jackie I suddendly felt the overwhelming urge to help you, and then I saw my uniform and..."

"You got the idea to "cheer" for me right?" Said Marco guessing what she was gonna say.

"Y-yeah..." said Sabrina scratching her cheek with her finger. "it was such a dumb idea... I can't believe it worked."

"I don't think it was dumb, you're a cheerleader, and I really felt your support even if it was you doing flips and stunts, it really filled me with motivation, huh... I guess theres way more to cheerleading than I thought." Marco said.

"yeah." Said Sabrina huggin her pom-poms. "I never thought about how much It means to be able to motivate and cheer people up, maybe thats the real reason I always go to cheer in games despite serious injurues is that i really love to do it, and not just because... you know... popularity and identity."

"That's so cheesy!" Said Marco laughing a bit.

"T-thats so unfair! what about your safe kid stuff you told me before!" Sabrina complained.

"I am just messing! besides as my love for nachos may make apparent, I love me some cheese." Marco replied.

"hehehe... and who knows? maybe oneday I will be able to motivate the Awesome Opossums enough they will win a game!" Said Sabrina enthusiastically.

"That will never happen." Said Marco bluntly

"I knoooowwww..." Said Sabrina hanging her head down and covered in a dark aura.

Then the two just looked at each other and started laughing.

"So are you gonna call Jackie soon?" Sabrina asked.

"Oh heck no!" Marco said making a cross with his arms. "It's too soon for that! instead I plan to send her funny cat pictures, everyone loves cats!"

Sabrina just laughed nervously, she realized that Marco's worst enemy in love is himself.

but their celebratory moment was cut by a piercing voice that came from behind the girl.

"Sabrina!" Said the voice.

"EEEEK!!" Sabrina jumped and froze in place at the mere sound of that voice, she slowly turned arround, "B-B-B-B-Brittney!"

Indeed the voice belonged to none other than Brittney Wong, leader of Echo Creek Academy's cheerleader team.

"What are you doing hanging with that moony brat's boyfriend?!" asked Brittney in a commanding tone.

Marco just rolled his eyes and said nothing, he knows he would just be wasting his time dealing with her.

"B-Brittney I..." Sabrina tried to speak.

"Don't need to hear it!" Brittney interrupted. "If you like hanging out with nobodies thats fine, I always knew you didn't had what it takes to be in my inner circle anyway, and you can't even..."

Brittney continued to say horrible things about Sabrina, Star and even Marco, Sabrina was just standing there, trembling and slowly tearing up, Marco was getting angry at the sight and decided to speak up.

"Brittney, thats en--"

"E-ENOUGH!"

Both Marco and Brittney turned around with their eyes wide to the max, the one that yelled that was Sabrina, who was trembling and clenching her fist.

"W-w-Why you have to be like that, Brittney!?" Sabrina started to yell. "You never a-appreciate all the effort I and everyne else in the team puts into every routine and practice! W-we all do our best and put up with you, and you never give us a-any credit or consideration!. I have broken arms and legs for you and the team a-and you never appreciate it! I have cried because of your horrible demands! a-and so has everyone else in the team! Also how DARE you call Marco a nobody, he in the past hours has shown way more care and consideration for me than you have in YEARS!! I-i-if you say t-thats being (sob) a nobody THEN I RATTER BE A NOBODY THAN HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE LIKES OF YOU!!"

Marco just stood shocked at what he just withnessed not knowing even how to react.

"Well thats new..." Said Brittney in an extremely cold tone.

Sabrina just stood there, she was shaking, and she had her eyes tightly closed with tears visible on them. Marco got extremely annoyed at Brittney's cold answer and was about to speak up.

"...Fine..." Suddedendly Brittny spoke after letting out a long sigh.

"Huh...?" Said Sabrina opening her eyes.

"I will try to not be as demanding, whatever..." Said Brittney crossing her arms and looking away. Marco was sure he was losing his mind cause he in the last hour had seen crazier stuff than even in his most wild adventures with Star, just what the heck was going on!?

"If you say the team is having a bad time then I will do something about it, I'm the leader after all." Said Brittney as Marco and Sabrina stared in awe. "Seriously with you all, if you have a problem COME AND TELL ME! I swear I am surrounded by idiots."

Both Marco and Sabrina let out a nervous laugh, it seems even Brittney can be reasonable sometimes.

"As for you Sabrina." Said Brittney which caused Sabrina to freeze solid. "While I appreciate you having the guts to stand up to me, dont forget your place, I am still the queen around here, and you BETTER be able to do the stunts I asked you to master by next week if you know what's good for you."

She then whipped her hair at Sabrina which caused her to shriek and jump behind Marco and left.

"Wow, she really softened off, she gave you a week instead of a day this time." Said marco. "that's something!"

Sabrina just let out a nervous chuckle.

"Also, you stood up to Brittney Friggin' Wong, Sabrina! Thats AMAZING!" Said Marco really impressed.

"I...I did r-right...?" Sabrina said still in shock at the crazy events that just transpired.

"Well not the part of cowering in fear just cause she whipped her hair at you... BUT ASIDE THAT YOU DID!" Said Marco raising his fist into the sky.

Sabrina's expression slowly changed from shock, to awe to a huge smile.

"Hahahaha... I DID! I DID! THANK YOU SO MUCH!" Sabrina genunely felt it was thanks to Marco that this all happened and before she realized it she had him wrapped inside her arms very tightly.

"AAAGGHHHH!!" Marco cried in pain, "Y-Y-YOU'RE CRUSHING M-MEEE--" He Struggled to say as his face was turning purple.

"EEEK! I'M SO SORRY, MARCO!" Sabrina yelled as she let go and jumped back, which led to her foot getting stuck in a bucket and mop a Janitor left in the hallway.

What followed was a chain reaction of destruction that words do no justice. As Marco gasped for air he witnessed the whole thing unfold, it defies explanation, just be said, that hallway turned into a disaster zone with a cheerleader in the middle causing it all.

As the whole scene ended a dimensional rift Opened right next to Marco, from it the titular character, Star Butterfly emerged.

"Now THAT was a horrible mess if I ever saw one, but I'm back now, Marco, what did I miss while I waaaaAAAATH HAPPENED HERE!?!?" Said Star seeing the result of Sabrina's latest accident.

Marco snapped out of the awe state of seeing that disaster happen and quickly looked around to see if he could see Sabrina, then she saw an arm raise from the ruins, it was her arm, doing a thumbs up.

"I-I'm okay!" Sabrina said poking her head out from the rubble. "No broken bones!" she added smilling but clearly being in extreme pain, just this time Marco could tell her smile was genuine.

"You got Lucky!" Said Marco smiling back at her.

"Lucky he says..." Said star to herself. "WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED WHILE I WAS GOOOOOONEEE!"



And so the curtain of this story closes with the Princess of Mewni wondering if she missed something even crazier than her adventure that same morning.
