- Albert Maysles together with Kristen Nutile have been working on a 60 minute documentary about the critically acclaimed dancer and choreographer, Sally Gross titled SALLY GROSS - THE PLEASURE OF STILLNESS. Called 'the most poetic of minimalist modern-dance choreographers' by New York Times dance critic Jennifer Dunning, Sally Gross has been dancing for more than fifty years and was part of the Beatnik Generation as well as the acclaimed Judson Dance Theater.
- This film offers an insight into the life and creative process of an important New York artist. Born and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City, Sally came to be an artist at a time in New York that was revolutionary. She was a part of the American Avant Garde of the 50's and 60's and was able to synthesize her Jewish ancestry with American art and culture. These influences continue to inform her intricate, intense and intimate work up until today.
- Now in her seventies, Sally is one of the few performers from the legendary Judson Dance Theater of the early 1960's who is still performing. She has been able to grow old in and with her work and is intrigued and stimulated by the process of aging.
- The film follows Sally through the unpredictable journey of creating a new dance piece for her annual performance season in New York City. This process is the backbone of the film from which it departs to discuss issues like inspirations, creating and aging. We accompany her as she gathers inspiration from the visual arts, discusses her life and art with friends and colleagues, and interacts with her dancers in rehearsals. Interwoven throughout, the film presents significant dances from her rich body of work.
