  19. <p begin="00:00:04.806" end="00:00:07.160">to foment public support for war.</p>
  20. <p begin="00:00:07.160" end="00:00:10.762">One such program by the US was<br/>put in place during the Cold War,</p>
  21. <p begin="00:00:10.775" end="00:00:12.844">called Operation Gladio,</p>
  22. <p begin="00:00:12.844" end="00:00:15.563">the aim of which was to have <br/>paramilitary organizations</p>
  23. <p begin="00:00:15.563" end="00:00:17.426"> stay behind in the Eastern Bloc</p>
  24. <p begin="00:00:17.426" end="00:00:20.274"> to continue the destabilization <br/>of regional powers.</p>
  25. <p begin="00:00:20.434" end="00:00:23.824">And although the program was finally<br/>acknowledged in 2006,</p>
  26. <p begin="00:00:23.824" end="00:00:25.722">and is said to be long over,</p>
  27. <p begin="00:00:25.722" end="00:00:27.981">some allege that it never really ended:</p>
  28. <p begin="00:00:27.981" end="00:00:29.841">instead, this clandestine operation</p>
  29. <p begin="00:00:29.841" end="00:00:33.307">simply morphed to fit the needs<br/>of the War on Terror.</p>
  30. <p begin="00:00:33.557" end="00:00:36.507">Here to help me break down this very <br/>important and convoluted subject</p>
  31. </div>

  33. <p begin="00:00:36.507" end="00:00:38.580">is James Corbett: independent journalist</p>
  34. <p begin="00:00:38.580" end="00:00:40.254">and host of <span tts:fontStyle="italic">The Corbett Report.</span></p>
  35. <p begin="00:00:40.254" end="00:00:41.821">Thanks for coming on, James.</p>
  36. <p begin="00:00:42.221" end="00:00:43.788">(James): Thank you for having me Abby.</p>
  37. <p begin="00:00:44.288" end="00:00:46.975">So, what did Operation Gladio <br/>consist of,</p>
  38. <p begin="00:00:46.975" end="00:00:49.538"> and how far-reaching was the program?</p>
  39. <p begin="00:00:50.543" end="00:00:52.595">Well: you were recently, on the program,</p>
  40. <p begin="00:00:52.595" end="00:00:55.812">talking about the top five conspiracies <br/>that turned out to be true;</p>
  41. <p begin="00:00:55.812" end="00:00:59.285">and I think Operation Gladio <br/>has to rank up there among them.</p>
  42. <p begin="00:00:59.595" end="00:01:02.473">"Gladio" is the code name for a<br/>clandestine operation that, </p>
  43. <p begin="00:01:02.473" end="00:01:06.187">as you indicate, was set up <br/>by NATO in conjunction with the CIA</p>
  44. <p begin="00:01:06.277" end="00:01:07.951">in the wake of World War II</p>
  45. <p begin="00:01:07.951" end="00:01:09.701">as the Cold War started to develop.</p>
  46. <p begin="00:01:10.106" end="00:01:12.493">And the official cover of this program</p>
  47. <p begin="00:01:12.493" end="00:01:15.753">was that it was designed as<br/>a stay-behind program</p>
  48. <p begin="00:01:15.753" end="00:01:20.483"> to fund, train, equip, supply, and <br/>otherwise facilitate</p>
  49. <p begin="00:01:20.534" end="00:01:22.705">groups to be ready in the case</p>
  50. <p begin="00:01:22.705" end="00:01:24.502">of a Soviet invasion of Europe.</p>
  51. <p begin="00:01:24.602" end="00:01:25.892">And if that were to happen, </p>
  52. <p begin="00:01:25.892" end="00:01:28.110">basically, these groups would <br/>be able to resist</p>
  53. <p begin="00:01:28.110" end="00:01:30.614">the Soviet occupation forces</p>
  54. <p begin="00:01:30.706" end="00:01:33.973">while NATO prepared some sort <br/>of military response.</p>
  55. <p begin="00:01:34.152" end="00:01:37.352">That was, at least, the official cover<br/>for what was happening;</p>
  56. <p begin="00:01:37.352" end="00:01:40.038">but ultimately what resulted<br/>from this was,</p>
  57. <p begin="00:01:40.038" end="00:01:43.144">over the course of the five decades of<br/>the Cold War</p>
  58. <p begin="00:01:43.634" end="00:01:47.747">these funds and arms and equipment</p>
  59. <p begin="00:01:47.747" end="00:01:49.863">were going to paramilitary groups</p>
  60. <p begin="00:01:49.863" end="00:01:51.539">and ultranationalist groups</p>
  61. <p begin="00:01:51.539" end="00:01:53.992">that were basically against...</p>
  62. <p begin="00:01:53.992" end="00:01:55.660">hard-line anti-Communists.</p>
  63. <p begin="00:01:55.840" end="00:01:57.608">And this resulted in a number of</p>
  64. <p begin="00:01:57.608" end="00:02:00.115">different operations, events, <br/>and outrages</p>
  65. <p begin="00:02:00.115" end="00:02:02.504">that ultimately were blamed <br/>on Communists</p>
  66. <p begin="00:02:02.504" end="00:02:04.953">as a way of trying to basically</p>
  67. <p begin="00:02:05.763" end="00:02:09.549">cripple the political Left<br/>in Europe during that period.</p>
  68. <p begin="00:02:09.747" end="00:02:12.569">And perhaps the best-known <br/>of those outrages and atrocities</p>
  69. <p begin="00:02:12.569" end="00:02:14.483">was the 1980 Bologna Bombing,</p>
  70. <p begin="00:02:14.483" end="00:02:18.017">which killed 85 people<br/>and wounded 200 more.</p>
  71. <p begin="00:02:18.095" end="00:02:21.212">That was, again, directly linked <br/>to this Operation Gladio.</p>
  72. <p begin="00:02:21.422" end="00:02:23.013">It was eventually exposed</p>
  73. <p begin="00:02:23.013" end="00:02:25.232">in the early 1990s</p>
  74. <p begin="00:02:25.232" end="00:02:26.751">in the Italian Parliament,</p>
  75. <p begin="00:02:26.752" end="00:02:29.525">and eventually, that resulted in an outcry</p>
  76. <p begin="00:02:29.525" end="00:02:32.367">that was supposedly going to kick off</p>
  77. <p begin="00:02:32.367" end="00:02:34.199">a European Parliamentary investigation</p>
  78. <p begin="00:02:34.199" end="00:02:36.080">that never actually occurred.</p>
  79. <p begin="00:02:36.080" end="00:02:37.876">But we've been led to believe</p>
  80. <p begin="00:02:37.876" end="00:02:40.817">-- in a lot of the English-language <br/>media, and in the Western world --</p>
  81. <p begin="00:02:40.817" end="00:02:43.097">that this was specifically <br/>focused on Europe,</p>
  82. <p begin="00:02:43.097" end="00:02:46.594">and it specifically started and ended <br/>with the Cold War.</p>
  83. <p begin="00:02:46.594" end="00:02:50.316"> But in fact, as more information <br/>continues to come out about it, </p>
  84. <p begin="00:02:50.316" end="00:02:52.754">we start to see that, in fact, <br/>the field of operations</p>
  85. <p begin="00:02:52.754" end="00:02:54.680"> of Operation Gladio really is global</p>
  86. <p begin="00:02:54.680" end="00:02:56.698">and that it continues to this current day.</p>
  87. <p begin="00:02:56.788" end="00:02:59.539">Well let's talk about that transition. <br/>I mean: very shocking.</p>
  88. <p begin="00:02:59.729" end="00:03:02.761">I didn't even really understand the extent<br/>of Operation Gladio </p>
  89. <p begin="00:03:02.761" end="00:03:04.559">until I was watching your series.</p>
  90. <p begin="00:03:04.559" end="00:03:07.507">I recommend everyone to check that out.<br/>A really thorough series,</p>
  91. <p begin="00:03:07.507" end="00:03:10.546"> just basically outlining everything<br/>that this operation was.</p>
  92. <p begin="00:03:10.546" end="00:03:12.668">As you said: I mean, it's a <br/>decades-long operation</p>
  93. <p begin="00:03:12.668" end="00:03:15.835">that consisted of false-flag terror <br/>attacks, death,</p>
  94. <p begin="00:03:16.465" end="00:03:20.213">the funding of ultranationalist groups <br/>to foment terrorism.</p>
  95. <p begin="00:03:20.293" end="00:03:22.548">Let's talk about the transition into<br/>Gladio B.</p>
  96. <p begin="00:03:22.548" end="00:03:25.847">You said that there's evidence showing <br/>that this is actually</p>
  97. <p begin="00:03:26.197" end="00:03:29.840">still happening today, and it's actually <br/>morphed into something else.</p>
  98. <p begin="00:03:29.840" end="00:03:32.847">What is that? And what evidence<br/>is there to back that up?</p>
  99. <p begin="00:03:33.177" end="00:03:34.848">Well, as you say,</p>
  100. <p begin="00:03:34.848" end="00:03:37.366">I had a video series that I conducted<br/>earlier this year</p>
  101. <p begin="00:03:37.366" end="00:03:39.441">with FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds.</p>
  102. <p begin="00:03:39.461" end="00:03:42.200">And as people may or may not <br/>know, she's been referred to as</p>
  103. <p begin="00:03:42.200" end="00:03:43.950">"the most gagged woman <br/>in the United States"</p>
  104. <p begin="00:03:43.950" end="00:03:46.009">by the ACLU and other organizations</p>
  105. <p begin="00:03:46.442" end="00:03:49.233">for having the state secrets privilege <br/>applied to her case,</p>
  106. <p begin="00:03:49.233" end="00:03:51.136">to classify all sorts of information</p>
  107. <p begin="00:03:51.136" end="00:03:52.832">about what she was working on</p>
  108. <p begin="00:03:52.832" end="00:03:54.371">at her time in the FBI</p>
  109. <p begin="00:03:54.371" end="00:03:57.351">in the translation department at<br/>the Washington Field Office.</p>
  110. <p begin="00:03:57.351" end="00:03:59.784">And basically the information<br/>that she had</p>
  111. <p begin="00:04:00.064" end="00:04:03.404">indicated that there was a change</p>
  112. <p begin="00:04:03.404" end="00:04:05.531">that occurred in this Operation Gladio,</p>
  113. <p begin="00:04:05.531" end="00:04:07.465">that occurred in the mid-1990s.</p>
  114. <p begin="00:04:07.465" end="00:04:09.289">And she was specifically focused</p>
  115. <p begin="00:04:09.294" end="00:04:11.716">on the Turkish field of operations.</p>
  116. <p begin="00:04:11.846" end="00:04:14.562">And this is -- again -- documented and <br/>on the record </p>
  117. <p begin="00:04:14.562" end="00:04:17.524">-- although little known and little <br/>talked-about in the Western media --</p>
  118. <p begin="00:04:17.524" end="00:04:20.101">but Turkey was, in fact, <br/>one of the first places</p>
  119. <p begin="00:04:20.101" end="00:04:24.243">where Operation Gladio eventuated; and<br/>was, in fact, one of the central places</p>
  120. <p begin="00:04:24.244" end="00:04:26.998">as a geostrategic window: the bridge...</p>
  121. <p begin="00:04:26.998" end="00:04:29.413"> -- the so-called bridge --<br/>between Europe and the Middle East</p>
  122. <p begin="00:04:29.413" end="00:04:32.603">it's always had a geostrategic location, <br/>and, as such, </p>
  123. <p begin="00:04:32.603" end="00:04:36.156">was one of the jewels in the crown <br/>of the Operation Gladio program.</p>
  124. <p begin="00:04:36.266" end="00:04:37.721">But in the mid-1990s,</p>
  125. <p begin="00:04:37.721" end="00:04:39.896">Operation Gladio started to shift</p>
  126. <p begin="00:04:39.896" end="00:04:42.026">from that funding of paramilitaries</p>
  127. <p begin="00:04:42.026" end="00:04:43.464">and ultranationalist groups</p>
  128. <p begin="00:04:43.519" end="00:04:45.222">-- in Turkey, specifically --</p>
  129. <p begin="00:04:45.222" end="00:04:48.551">towards an operation more like</p>
  130. <p begin="00:04:48.551" end="00:04:51.082">what we saw in Afghanistan<br/>in the 1980s:</p>
  131. <p begin="00:04:51.082" end="00:04:54.931">where the US, specifically, <br/>was funding, and helping,</p>
  132. <p begin="00:04:54.931" end="00:04:57.268"> and training, and arming <br/>the <span tts:fontStyle="italic">mujahideen</span></p>
  133. <p begin="00:04:57.268" end="00:05:00.332">in their fight against the<br/>Soviets in Afghanistan.</p>
  134. <p begin="00:05:00.512" end="00:05:02.239">And this became the model</p>
  135. <p begin="00:05:02.239" end="00:05:04.499">for what's known as Gladio B.</p>
  136. <p begin="00:05:04.499" end="00:05:07.390">Gladio B is the term that <br/>-- Sibel Edmonds indicates --</p>
  137. <p begin="00:05:07.390" end="00:05:10.747">is the actual FBI file that they <br/>have on this:</p>
  138. <p begin="00:05:10.747" end="00:05:13.606">the information on this in the FBI.</p>
  139. <p begin="00:05:13.606" end="00:05:15.283">But there is a different name</p>
  140. <p begin="00:05:15.283" end="00:05:17.364">for whatever office in the Pentagon</p>
  141. <p begin="00:05:17.372" end="00:05:20.022">actually works with NATO <br/>on this operation.</p>
  142. <p begin="00:05:20.283" end="00:05:21.726">That's still classified:</p>
  143. <p begin="00:05:21.726" end="00:05:25.699">We don't know that. But we do know that <br/>it's referred to as Gladio B by the FBI.</p>
  144. <p begin="00:05:25.699" end="00:05:27.982">And basically, this is the cooperation</p>
  145. <p begin="00:05:27.982" end="00:05:29.995">of NATO and US</p>
  146. <p begin="00:05:29.995" end="00:05:33.635">-- including high-ranking US State <br/>Department officials and others --</p>
  147. <p begin="00:05:33.745" end="00:05:37.136">with Islamic terrorists, basically,</p>
  148. <p begin="00:05:37.229" end="00:05:40.208">in the perpetuation of a <br/>strategy of tension</p>
  149. <p begin="00:05:40.338" end="00:05:42.713"> which can be used as a type of weapon </p>
  150. <p begin="00:05:42.713" end="00:05:45.597">against... specifically in Central Asia</p>
  151. <p begin="00:05:45.597" end="00:05:48.937">and the Caucasus region, </p>
  152. <p begin="00:05:49.197" end="00:05:51.277">which is an exceptionally important part</p>
  153. <p begin="00:05:51.277" end="00:05:55.138"> of the global chessboard,<br/>as Zbigniew Brzezinski talks about.</p>
  154. <p begin="00:05:55.138" end="00:05:58.218">And in fact, in his 1997 book <br/><span tts:fontStyle="italic">The Grand Chessboard,</span></p>
  155. <p begin="00:05:58.218" end="00:06:01.301">he identified Central Asia as the <br/>absolute key </p>
  156. <p begin="00:06:01.501" end="00:06:05.107">for... anyone who wants to have<br/>world dominance in this day and age<br/></p>
  157. <p begin="00:06:05.107" end="00:06:06.639">needs to control Central Asia.</p>
  158. <p begin="00:06:06.779" end="00:06:10.217">And that's where we find a lot of these<br/>operations, now, are being based,</p>
  159. <p begin="00:06:10.217" end="00:06:12.332">with US and NATO officials</p>
  160. <p begin="00:06:12.332" end="00:06:14.418">cooperating with Islamic terrorists,</p>
  161. <p begin="00:06:14.418" end="00:06:18.228">in order to foment a type of<br/>destabilization </p>
  162. <p begin="00:06:18.228" end="00:06:21.580">that is aimed, ultimately,<br/>against rivals Russia and China.</p>
  163. <p begin="00:06:22.194" end="00:06:23.856">Right: very fascinating.</p>
  164. <p begin="00:06:23.856" end="00:06:26.282">I remember, in the video series you're <br/>talking about,</p>
  165. <p begin="00:06:26.282" end="00:06:29.206">right before 9/11<br/>-- as in 1997-2001 --</p>
  166. <p begin="00:06:29.206" end="00:06:31.244"> I mean, we're talking about al-Zawahiri,</p>
  167. <p begin="00:06:31.244" end="00:06:33.053">alleged top al-Qaeda officials,</p>
  168. <p begin="00:06:33.053" end="00:06:35.638">being flown out, fostered by NATO,</p>
  169. <p begin="00:06:36.278" end="00:06:38.864">propagated by NATO, and also the CIA,</p>
  170. <p begin="00:06:38.864" end="00:06:40.636">and covert forces in the area.</p>
  171. <p begin="00:06:40.996" end="00:06:43.951">You said that this is actually<br/>going on still, to this day.</p>
  172. <p begin="00:06:44.322" end="00:06:45.958">What are they doing?</p>
  173. <p begin="00:06:45.958" end="00:06:48.642">And explain, really, how this manifested</p>
  174. <p begin="00:06:48.642" end="00:06:50.951"> into perpetuating what we're seeing </p>
  175. <p begin="00:06:50.951" end="00:06:53.656">play off across that region of the world <br/>right now?</p>
  176. <p begin="00:06:54.360" end="00:06:56.391">Well you're exactly right <br/>about that.</p>
  177. <p begin="00:06:56.391" end="00:06:58.524">And again, this comes directly<br/>from Sibel Edmonds</p>
  178. <p begin="00:06:58.524" end="00:07:02.260">who was working directly<br/>with the information from the FBI</p>
  179. <p begin="00:07:02.260" end="00:07:06.442">that Ayman al-Zawahiri was meeting<br/>with top-level US officials</p>
  180. <p begin="00:07:06.442" end="00:07:10.384">in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1997 to 2001</p>
  181. <p begin="00:07:10.384" end="00:07:11.470">-- in that range.</p>
  182. <p begin="00:07:11.470" end="00:07:13.137">And this is important because,</p>
  183. <p begin="00:07:13.137" end="00:07:14.433">for people who don't know,</p>
  184. <p begin="00:07:14.883" end="00:07:18.054">Ayman al-Zawahiri was, of course,<br/>Osama Bin Laden's right-hand man</p>
  185. <p begin="00:07:18.054" end="00:07:21.643">and is now the nominal head<br/>of al-Qaeda itself.</p>
  186. <p begin="00:07:21.643" end="00:07:25.264">So the fact that he had such high-level <br/>contacts for so many years with...</p>
  187. <p begin="00:07:25.837" end="00:07:27.864">in the heart of the US State Department,</p>
  188. <p begin="00:07:27.864" end="00:07:29.748">and with high-ranking officials,</p>
  189. <p begin="00:07:29.748" end="00:07:31.786">is an exceptionally big story:</p>
  190. <p begin="00:07:31.786" end="00:07:33.781">for obvious reasons.</p>
  191. <p begin="00:07:33.781" end="00:07:40.091">And the fact that this is still ongoing,<br/>I think, is certainly viewable</p>
  192. <p begin="00:07:40.101" end="00:07:41.891">in the context of what's happening</p>
  193. <p begin="00:07:41.891" end="00:07:43.936">in that Central Asia/Caucasus region</p>
  194. <p begin="00:07:43.936" end="00:07:47.375">with countries of such importance</p>
  195. <p begin="00:07:47.375" end="00:07:51.346">geostrategically: like Azerbaijan<br/>and Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan</p>
  196. <p begin="00:07:51.462" end="00:07:54.293">which are in that Caspian Sea basin,<br/></p>
  197. <p begin="00:07:54.293" end="00:07:57.937">and that corridor where a lot of the <br/>pipelines for those oil resources</p>
  198. <p begin="00:07:57.937" end="00:07:59.487">are being hard-wired right now.<br/><span tts:fontStyle="italic">(And, of course, all of these various...)</span></p>
  199. <p begin="00:07:59.487" end="00:08:02.041">(Abby): And I wanted to jump in there <br/>really, really quickly James, because</p>
  200. <p begin="00:08:02.041" end="00:08:05.431">we have about a minute left. But of <br/>course, Sibel talks about drug-running </p>
  201. <p begin="00:08:05.431" end="00:08:08.601">in this operation as well: the heroin <br/>from Afghanistan. </p>
  202. <p begin="00:08:08.601" end="00:08:12.154">But really quickly: I mean, <br/>why haven't more of these allegations </p>
  203. <p begin="00:08:12.154" end="00:08:16.147">been covered in, even, independent <br/>media, James?</p>
  204. <p begin="00:08:16.397" end="00:08:19.552">Unfortunately, there is a <br/>total wall of silence on this.</p>
  205. <p begin="00:08:19.552" end="00:08:23.661">And part of the reason, I think, the <br/>independent media hasn't picked up on it</p>
  206. <p begin="00:08:23.661" end="00:08:26.463">is because there is <span tts:fontStyle="italic">so much</span> to talk <br/>about, and there are</p>
  207. <p begin="00:08:26.463" end="00:08:28.205">so many connections<br/>that a lot of people</p>
  208. <p begin="00:08:28.205" end="00:08:30.329"> just simply haven't <br/>even heard about before.</p>
  209. <p begin="00:08:30.329" end="00:08:33.574">So it is an area of the globe that<br/>a lot of people aren't familiar with</p>
  210. <p begin="00:08:33.574" end="00:08:36.431">and it takes a lot of coaching<br/>to get people familiar </p>
  211. <p begin="00:08:36.431" end="00:08:38.812">with some of the players and<br/>names and dates.</p>
  212. <p begin="00:08:38.812" end="00:08:41.067">So just... that's one of the reasons </p>
  213. <p begin="00:08:41.067" end="00:08:43.389">why it hasn't been featured <br/>in the independent media. </p>
  214. <p begin="00:08:43.389" end="00:08:46.371">And obviously, the mainstream media, <br/>unfortunately -- as we know --</p>
  215. <p begin="00:08:46.371" end="00:08:48.194">is controlled on these types of subjects</p>
  216. <p begin="00:08:48.194" end="00:08:51.020">and won't go near this type of <br/>blockbuster information.</p>
  217. <p begin="00:08:51.020" end="00:08:54.348">Well, now that you've kind of outlined the<br/>preliminary base of knowledge about it,</p>
  218. <p begin="00:08:54.348" end="00:08:57.189">we'll get you on again to break it <br/>more down. Thank you so much.</p>
