- [2014-11-05 13:39:08] <Kkat> 3Previously...
- [2014-11-05 13:40:20] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream puts it away. "This here's a friendship necklace. It wouldn't make much sense t' have both halves, would it?"
- [2014-11-05 13:40:26] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream checks the dresser. The bottom drawer is slightly reluctant to be pulled completely free of the dresser. But once done, Golden_Dream can see something wrapped in cloth hidden between that drawer and the floor of the room.
- [2014-11-05 13:40:36] <Kkat> 3Unwrapping it, she finds a tan safari-style explorer's hat (with green wrappings and a black band), a hallowed-out animal horn (with a leather strap and a cork stopper), and a note (slightly crumpled, reading "Only the remorseful one shall find the key") inside.
- [2014-11-05 13:40:43] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:40:50] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well sighs. "In /Daring Do and the Griffon's Goblet/, the Cult of the Quetzalcóatl Empress takes over the Tenochtitlan Basin, shrouding it under the Empress' dark magic, but their efforts to summon forth Quetzalcóatl is foiled by Daring Do, who kicks their flanks..."
- [2014-11-05 13:40:56] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well continues, "Then in /Daring Do and the Amulet of Atonement/, Ahuizotl attempts to take the Quetzalcóatl Empress's power for himself, having secured some sort of secret passage in and out of the Basin. Daring Do thwarts him, but just barely..."
- [2014-11-05 13:41:03] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well finishes, "Then, in /Daring Do and the Razor of Dreams/, she finally defeats Ahuizotl and secures control of the Amulet of Atonement, dispelling the dark magic of the Quetzalcóatl Empress, and thus protecting the basin with the Radiant Shield of Rasdon!"
- [2014-11-05 13:41:22] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream 's ear perks up. "Mare-Do-Well, where'd they say th' Radiant Shield of Rasdon went?"
- [2014-11-05 13:41:28] <Kkat> 3Bookwright sighs and shakes his head. "Golden, weren't you listening? We're /in/ the Radiant Shield of Rasdon!"
- [2014-11-05 13:41:33] <Kkat> 3Bookwright points a hoof upwards, indicating the Obelisk above. "These tunnels, that rock, those glyphs... We're /inside/ the Shield!"
- [2014-11-05 13:41:35] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:41:45] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well alights in the middle of the old carnage. She looks disturbingly unaffected, as much as Golden_Dream... but then, she can't smell it. "Checked out that airship. I don't think they're slavers... exactly."
- [2014-11-05 13:41:51] <Kkat> 3Shatara looks at the ghost quizzically. "...exactly?"
- [2014-11-05 13:41:56] <Kkat> 3CopyCat looks over at ghost Dashie. "Do you think they're friendly?"
- [2014-11-05 13:42:03] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream seems more disconcerted about what Dashie said than what is currently around her.
- [2014-11-05 13:42:11] <Kkat> 3Bookwright ponders, "How does one write that on a resume? 'Half-Slaver'? 'Enslavement Officer'? 'Semi-permanent involuntary work overseer'?"
- [2014-11-05 13:42:17] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well shakes her head. "They're pirates."
- [2014-11-05 13:42:23] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:43:15] <Kkat> 3From the shadows, a figure emerged. Tall, gaunt, with a featureless face. Tendrils of darkness writhed from its back, somehow darker than the utter blackness around him. Those tendrils reached out towards Daring Do.
- [2014-11-05 13:43:20] <Kkat> 3Daring Do dropped to her hooves, taking a fighting stance. Her body protested. She’d bee through too much today already. But she wasn’t going to let this thing take the Amulet of Atonement.
- [2014-11-05 13:43:26] <Kkat> 3Utter panic flooded Daring Do when the tendrils of black instead wrapped around A.K. Yearling’s body and lifted her from Daring Do’s back. She screamed silently as she felt the weight lift from her.
- [2014-11-05 13:43:34] <Kkat> 3*/No! You can’t have her!/*
- [2014-11-05 13:43:39] <Kkat> 3The faceless head of the slender, stripeless zebra seemed to stare into Daring Do, even though it had no eyes. A rush of memories flooded up from her mind, jumbled and unbidden.
- [2014-11-05 13:43:45] <Kkat> 3“But…” snapped Fleetwing as he confronted her on the deck of the /Uasi/.
- [2014-11-05 13:43:51] <Kkat> 3“She…” said Goldentongue as he trotted down the gangplank of the /Mzigo Msichana/.
- [2014-11-05 13:43:56] <Kkat> 3“Is...” Bluebell asked, looking at the blunderbuss.
- [2014-11-05 13:44:08] <Kkat> 3“Mine...” whispered A.K. Yearling, dying.
- [2014-11-05 13:44:19] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:45:03] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well flaps her wings, looking at everyone. "If the Dark Empress has returned... or is trying to return... that means that there is something wrong with the Radiant Shield of Rasdon! It's been shut off or something! We need to use to Amulet of Atonement, just like Daring Do, to turn it back on. Before Quetzalcóatl can manifest with all her dark p
- [2014-11-05 13:45:22] <Kkat> 3...dark power!"
- [2014-11-05 13:45:27] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream gulps. "Yeah, I get it. I got it. We're fuckin' scared, but if she's /here/, that means so's th' Amulet."
- [2014-11-05 13:45:37] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well then droops. "Of course, we can't do it /exactly/ like Daring Do."
- [2014-11-05 13:45:43] <Kkat> 3Bookwright "I suppose we have to head for the center of the Shield then."
- [2014-11-05 13:45:49] <Kkat> 3Noble_Heart frowns at the prospect. "It would seem necessary again." she sighs quietly. "First we must find the amulet."
- [2014-11-05 13:45:55] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well 3notes, "The center of the Shield was the Fortress of Talikon." She rubs the back of her neck. "Buuuuut... we kinda destroyed that."
- [2014-11-05 13:46:05] <Kkat> 3CopyCat bites her lip as the mental recap flows from her friends. "Those tunnels we found under the obelisk, perhaps they offer us a way inside that temple without incurring the Empress' wrath."
- [2014-11-05 13:46:29] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well ooohs. "Hey, maybe there are tunnels to underneath the Fortress that aren't totally collapsed!"
- [2014-11-05 13:46:33] <Kkat> 3Bookwright asks, "Lava tubes you mean? Repurposed ones, anyways. It's worth a shot."
- [2014-11-05 13:46:46] <Kkat> 3CopyCat nods at Mare-Do-Well. "Or to the Fortress, yes."
- [2014-11-05 13:46:55] <Kkat> 3Mare-Do-Well thinks. "Soooo... we sneak our way into that temple... in order to get into the lava tubes. Then make our way under the Fortress!" She seems to be forgetting the 'get the Amulet' step, but at least she's got her enthusiasm back!
- [2014-11-05 13:47:02] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream continues. "And here's got to be where th' amulet is."
- [2014-11-05 13:47:04] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:47:36] <Kkat> 3Strange Device suddenly winces, looking confused and alarmed. At the same moment, a burst of static and gibberish cuts across Shatara's E.F.S.
- [2014-11-05 13:48:31] <Kkat> 3For Shatara, the burst is followed by the now-expected: >> DDA Report VII found. Download complete. << Shatara frowns. "Looks like they're getting the same breadcrumbs we are..."
- [2014-11-05 13:48:31] <Kkat> 3The zebra shouts something in zebra that, even without knowing the language or being able to read their minds, CopyCat can interpret as "What the fuck was that?!"
- [2014-11-05 13:48:31] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:48:31] <Kkat> 3Static blasts across Golden_Dream's vision, followed by >> DDA Report VII found. Download complete. <<
- [2014-11-05 13:48:31] <Kkat> 3Golden_Dream shivers. Now? Right now, Daring Do? This is the /exact sort of stuff that you hate when other people do to you!/
- [2014-11-05 13:48:31] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:49:13] <Kkat> 3Shatara fidgets a bit. "They, er...want know more of 'Abyss'..."
- [2014-11-05 13:49:21] <Kkat> 3Jugeote turns to the zebra pirate wearing the odd arcanotech. Speaking in oddly-accented griffin for Shatara's benefit, she says, "This is more your realm than mine, Kifaa. Would you care to explain?"
- [2014-11-05 13:49:32] <Kkat> 3Kifaa nods. "In the...." She pauses, fiddles with that arcanotech, then proceeds, "...bowels of the Temple is a great..." Again, she stops and speaks to Jugeote in zebra. Jugeote replies, supplying the griffin word for 'chasm'. "...a great chasm."
- [2014-11-05 13:49:38] <Kkat> 3Kifaa continue in this manner, repeatedly needing to ask for words from the more language savvy Jugeote, as she explains. "The Roamans called it the .... Pit of Orcus. The Villages called it Kutengwa Abyss."
- [2014-11-05 13:49:43] <Kkat> 3Kifaa tells Shatara, "By either name, it is a great hole, leading to the realm where the greatest... monsters are imprisoned."
- [2014-11-05 13:49:50] <Kkat> 3Shatara pales. "Soo...zebra Tartarus then..."
- [2014-11-05 13:49:52] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:51:20] <Kkat> 3Jugeote cocks her head and smirks. "Is that not why you are here too?" she asks Shatara. "Each of our peoples had their ways of keeping the monsters from escaping. We built temples. The ponies tamed a monster and set it to guard the entrance. The griffins... the griffins crafted a great artifact that could open and close portals to other realms."
- [2014-11-05 13:51:51] <Kkat> 3CopyCat nods, then turns to Shatara. "Can you ask if they are looking for the Amulet?" She scrunchy-faces. "And then if they know anything about the Faceless Flank-noodler."
- [2014-11-05 13:51:54] <Kkat> 3Shatara nods a bit, asking the piratestripes about the amulet and the faceless zebragoast.
- [2014-11-05 13:52:01] <Kkat> 3The pirates speak to each other, then Jugeote turns to Shatara, "I fear we know of neither of these things. But I am /very/ interested. What is this amulet you speak of?"
- [2014-11-05 13:52:04] <Kkat> 3---
- [2014-11-05 13:52:28] <Kkat> 3Noble_Heart finds herself staring at a carved image of what could be Cerberus. The highly stylized figure has pits for eyes, suggesting the tiny stones that were once embedded there have since been removed.
- [2014-11-05 13:52:37] <Kkat> 3Noble_Heart tilts her head to one side, then the other. "Someone has been pilfering the stones from these ruins. Though that is hardly a surprise." She looks the creature over. "It would seem that this most likely is a place where Tartarus might be found. How strange. Was the Empress once trapped within? Or is it she who does the trapping?"
- [2014-11-05 13:52:43] <Kkat> 3The entire wall holds imagery of fantastic and fearsome monsters of legend. Mostly zebra legend, and thus quite unfamiliar. Although the giant image of a bear filled with stars is rather recognizable.
- [2014-11-05 13:52:50] <Kkat> 3Noble_Heart raises a hoof towards that image. "The Ursas are feared here as well. How interesting." She looks to Bookwright. "Were you not interested in their stories and legendes?"
- [2014-11-05 13:52:57] <Kkat> 3Bookwright leaves off trying to understand Shatara's conversation and joins Noble_Heart in admiring the wall. "This is really cool. I wish I could have met the sculptors... these are extremely intricate carvings."
- [2014-11-05 13:53:04] <Kkat> 3Noble_Heart nods her head and frowns. "We wonder why the followers of the Quetzelcoatl Empress would wish to decorate their building so. Are they her enemies? Her allies? Something to be feared that she protects them from, or something that would be their allies if only they were freed?"
- [2014-11-05 13:53:11] <Kkat> 3Bookwright points at the eyes. "Perhaps this wall is a warning, and a lock? These sockets seem ready to accept something. And the warning is clear enough."
- [2014-11-05 13:53:24] <Kkat> 3Bookwright steps back and takes it all in. "Definitely a warning. 'Enter Not, Behold That Which This Temple Encompasses' or something like that."
- [2014-11-05 13:53:38] <Kkat> 3...

- [2014-11-05 13:53:55] <Kkat> 3--- Session Begins ---
- [2014-11-05 13:57:06] * Bookwright finishes, "A warning I have no intention of obeying, of course. Seriously wishing I could have brought a camera with me." He sighs. "I'll just have to describe it in my journal instead."
- [2014-11-05 13:58:34] * Golden_Dream remains low. She'll sneak peeks at the pretty wall when she's sure nobody's looking. Right.
- [2014-11-05 14:00:17] * CopyCat approaches Bookwright and Noble Heart, looking over wall murals. "Yes... or perhaps a warning about what lies within." She thinks. "Or what /used/ to lie within. I wonder what still remains."
- [2014-11-05 14:03:19] * Bookwright gestures expansively. "The Empress, for one."
- [2014-11-05 14:07:10] * CopyCat nods at Bookwright, and turns to Shatara. "We should stay near the zebra. They seem to act like they've been here before... or are familiar with these temples, at least."
- [2014-11-05 14:07:27] * Shatara nods.
- [2014-11-05 14:08:56] * Bookwright grunts with impatience, but recognizes the value of sticking with the knowledgeable. "Mmm. Fine, you're right I suppose. I'm just... a little impatient to see what's inside. I mean, with a mural like /that—/" he gestures at the wall, "—There's gotta be some sweet stuff in there."
- [2014-11-05 14:10:46] * CopyCat smiles sweetly at Bookwright. "Yes, but I'd prefer for them to fall into it than my friends."
- [2014-11-05 14:10:49] <Kkat> 3The larger male zebra pulls out a skull lantern and lights it.
- [2014-11-05 14:11:41] * Golden_Dream overheard that, and becomes rather quick to become kind of conflicted. She didn't know whether to be annoyed at Bookie for wanting to loot what amounts to hell, or be proud of him for the same reason.
- [2014-11-05 14:21:51] * Jugeote 3smiles politely to Shatara. "Do your people want to go first? You know, just to be sure you're the first to spot your maybe-valuable trinket?"
- [2014-11-05 14:25:14] * Get_Lost follows the group, seems a bit distracted
- [2014-11-05 14:30:07] * Noble_Heart continues to inspect the walls out of curiosity, but follows along with the others when they start to move.
- [2014-11-05 14:33:20] * Bookwright is metaphorically rubbing his hooves together in glee. Wait no, now he's literally doing that. Nevermind, carry on.
- [2014-11-05 14:37:36] * CopyCat sighs. "So much for letting the morally questionable pirates trigger the traps for us..." She looks at her friends. "They're waiting for us now. Shall we proceed?"
- [2014-11-05 14:41:31] * Bookwright "We shall proceed /with an abundance of caution./"
- [2014-11-05 14:47:28] * CopyCat smiles. "Yes! Caution to the wind! Like galloping full speed down a grassy slope to feel the wind in your mane!" CopyCat sets off at a trot past the zebras heading deeper into the temple.
- [2014-11-05 14:48:54] * Get_Lost follows copycat, trying to keep an eye on everything around
- [2014-11-05 14:51:06] * Golden_Dream follows safely at a distance, looking behind her every few steps.
- [2014-11-05 14:52:06] * Get_Lost also, is whistling a hanty while following "yo-oh! yo-oh! we row beneath the black flag!"
- [2014-11-05 14:52:57] <Jugeote> 3The hall leads into further darkness, lined by sconces that burn with black flame. The walls are adorned with textured carvings of blocky figures and ahools. Stone heads of feathered serpents jut from the walls above like looming gargoyles.
- [2014-11-05 14:53:43] <Jugeote> 3The hallway is ribbed with circular arches, the stones carved with symbols that have no known meaning.
- [2014-11-05 14:55:46] <Jugeote> 3There are a few chuckles from the zebra pirates, then the two mares break into jaunty song, matching Get_Lost's whistling. The zebra stallion just glowers silently. Nopony sees the flash of green across his eyes.
- [2014-11-05 14:57:49] * Get_Lost is the ususal enthusiast, if the pirates sing, she sings along. aggod time is a good time, after all
- [2014-11-05 15:00:34] * Noble_Heart looks up towards the runes and tilts her head to one side, then the other. "Do you suppose they are meant to keep things out, or in?"
- [2014-11-05 15:00:55] * Bookwright is paying more attention to the symbols. "Ooooh, /really/ wishing I knew what these meant."
- [2014-11-05 15:05:11] <Jugeote> 3The "ribbing" grows closer together, making the temple's tunnels look like a passage made for a giant, slithering snake. Darkened side passages appear between them, but the zebra pirates encourage moving constantly forward.
- [2014-11-05 15:06:07] * CopyCat likes encouragement! She proceeds forwards with a smile.
- [2014-11-05 15:11:56] * Bookwright takes it all in. "This place is wiiiild. Look at all the work put into this stonework..."
- [2014-11-05 15:12:53] * Noble_Heart frowns. "We do not like that they are pushing us further in. We cannot escape the feeling that these pirates wish to use Us as a sacrifice to this empress for her blessing.
- [2014-11-05 15:12:56] <Noble_Heart> "
- [2014-11-05 15:13:34] <Jugeote> 3The hallway ends in a freestanding staircase down with huge stone carvings of dragon-like serpents where railings might otherwise be. The stairwell spirals downward into a huge antichamber filled with stone columns, several of which have fallen and broken. Moss and and plants cover the walls, hanging vines cascade from balconies.
- [2014-11-05 15:15:28] * Get_Lost "if you don't mind, i'll check the files while we proceed. pleease gain time and slow down"
- [2014-11-05 15:15:56] * CopyCat trots in slow-motion.
- [2014-11-05 15:17:24] * Shatara activates SATS!...wait, that only works for him.
- [2014-11-05 15:17:26] * Bookwright is okay with that. "I'm okay with that."
- [2014-11-05 15:19:55] <Jugeote> 3At the far end of the chamber is a giant stone couatl head, it's open mouth the entrance to the grand hall beyond, it's unhinged jaw forming a ramp beneath the fangs above.
- [2014-11-05 15:21:42] <Jugeote> 3====================
- [2014-11-05 15:21:50] <Jugeote> 3Seventh mission report.
- [2014-11-05 15:21:56] <Jugeote> 3This isn’t going to end well.
- [2014-11-05 15:22:06] <Jugeote> 3I never wanted to be here again. Tenochtitlan Basin. The Temple of the Quetzalcóatl Empress. The last time I was here, the Cult of the Quetzalcóatl Empress had stolen the Griffin’s Goblet, and were using it to summon forth the Dark Empress’ power. Blanketed the entire basin with Her dark magic. Before Ahuizotl started to make his move.
- [2014-11-05 15:22:13] <Jugeote> 3I remember the fight on the rock bridge, above the Kutengwa Abyss. Somewhere down in the bowels of that horrible chasm is the Griffin’s Goblet, hopefully dashed to pieces. I remember seeing Quetzalcóatl’s face in that black void, staring up at us. Greedy. Hungry. Envious.
- [2014-11-05 15:22:18] <Jugeote> 3I remember the fight on the rock bridge, above the Kutengwa Abyss. Somewhere down in the bowels of that horrible chasm is the Griffin’s Goblet, hopefully dashed to pieces. I remember seeing Quetzalcóatl’s face in that black void, staring up at us. Greedy. Hungry. Envious.
- [2014-11-05 15:22:45] <Jugeote> 3((oops, sorry for the double-post))
- [2014-11-05 15:22:49] <Jugeote> 3I swore that I’d never come back to this Temple. It’s a cursed place. But then, I swore that I’d never return to the Tenochtitlan Basin when I declared my retirement. Yet, here I am, with a Roaman Legate hot on my tail.
- [2014-11-05 15:23:05] <Jugeote> 3Why am I even here? What am I going to do? This isn’t like one of my books. I can’t just best Legate Jua and run off into the sunset while she waves a hoof and curses my name. That never worked in real life. I can’t beat her into submission and turn her over to the authorities. She is the authority here. And my days of hoof-fighting are long behind me.
- [2014-11-05 15:23:24] <Jugeote> 3And the poison in my veins is burning away what little strength I have left.
- [2014-11-05 15:23:31] <Jugeote> 3I can’t kill her, not even if I could kill her. I’ve gone this long without willfully taking a life, no matter what’s at stake, and I’m not going to start now.
- [2014-11-05 15:23:37] <Jugeote> 3Unfortunately, she’s not going to have the same reservations. If I want to stop her, I’m going to have to be smarter. Face it, Jua and I are two old mares, well-seasoned but away past our prime. Being smarter is the only edge left in our repertoire.
- [2014-11-05 15:23:44] <Jugeote> 3Or I could turn around and walk away. But I won’t. Never have. It would be a crap note to go out on.
- [2014-11-05 15:24:16] <Jugeote> 3Open Seventh Pad y/n?
- [2014-11-05 15:24:22] <Jugeote> 3====================
- [2014-11-05 15:27:44] * Get_Lost selects Y
- [2014-11-05 15:27:48] * CopyCat freezes mid-step. "I-if we look into the Abyss, Quetzalcóatl m-may l-look back at us?" Suddenly she doesn't seem so keen on trotting on ahead...
- [2014-11-05 15:29:53] <Jugeote> 3After a slow descent, the group reaches the stone-strewn floor of the chamber.
- [2014-11-05 15:30:27] * Noble_Heart looks around slowly and frowns. "The symbolism is strong here. To enter, you must submit yourself to being devoured."
- [2014-11-05 15:30:46] <Jugeote> 3The techie zebra is eyeing Get_Lost.
- [2014-11-05 15:31:52] * Get_Lost is reading stuff on the same screen she should use to see. this doesn't really helps herc seeing where she'strotting
- [2014-11-05 15:31:55] * Bookwright "I'm not sure I like the idea of being eaten, but I'll do it for the exploration!"

- [2014-11-05 15:43:26] <Jugeote> 3With all the events of the day, I had not given the riddles of the sphinx any thought. Despite Professor Underhill’s warning, I was in no danger of madness. The riddle the sphinx had given me was so obvious that I had dismissed it utterly. And, in doing so, I had not taken the time to consider the value of it.
- [2014-11-05 15:43:36] <Jugeote> 3I had only known A.K. Yearling for a short time, but we had become friends. Now she was dead, and her body had been spirited away… quite literally, right before my eyes and the eyes of my two companions.
- [2014-11-05 15:43:49] <Jugeote> 3The last thing that I was thinking about was the danger of spreading around what I knew. It was the gravest mistake of my youth. The lesson that followed was hard to learn… and even harder to eventually /un/learn.
- [2014-11-05 15:43:57] <Jugeote> 3My companions, Fleetwing and Bluebell, were understandably terrified and confused. I had at least some grasp of what was happening, and I had a mission.
- [2014-11-05 15:44:02] <Jugeote> 3I told them everything.
- [2014-11-05 15:44:10] <Jugeote> 3~-------~ oOo ~-------~
- [2014-11-05 15:44:17] <Jugeote> 3“We just got kicked out of Bahari Soko, and you want to follow her back?” Fleetwing’s raised voice made Bluebell take a step back, but she nodded firmly in response. Fleetwing groaned in exasperation. “We’ll be arrested! We could be thrown in jail.”
- [2014-11-05 15:44:23] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do groaned. This argument wasn’t getting them any closer to Bahari Soko. She felt an unpleasant energy nearly vibrating through her. If she didn’t fly soon, she’d fly mad.
- [2014-11-05 15:44:30] <Jugeote> 3“The Roaman Legion is not going to throw students from Equestria in jail,” Bluebell responded, trying to sound reasonable. “Especially not when we’re bringing them some super important amulet thing.”
- [2014-11-05 15:44:36] <Jugeote> 3“The Amulet of Atonement,” Daring Do repeated, touching the Amulet under her jacket. She felt its cool light against her breast. “And we’re not bringing it to the Legion.”
- [2014-11-05 15:44:42] <Jugeote> 3After everything she’d just been through, seeing her friend fade away was one cruel turn too many. She should be completely losing it right now. She felt the frailty of her mental and emotional cohesion. Daring was certain that the Amulet was somehow helping her hold it together.
- [2014-11-05 15:44:49] <Jugeote> 3Bluebell shook her head, “Daring, this is really something for the authorities.”
- [2014-11-05 15:44:57] <Jugeote> 3“Mhudumu doesn’t trust Jua,” Daring Do replied. “He said to bring it to his friend, someone named Imani.”
- [2014-11-05 15:45:08] <Jugeote> 3Fleetwing flipped around in the air, rolling his eyes. “Yeah, because the zebra who pretended to be the ambassador’s servant in order to spy on him for Roam really seems like a guy you can trust.”
- [2014-11-05 15:45:15] <Jugeote> 3“Look, neither of you have to come with me,” Daring Do said. Enumerating, “You could get into trouble for returning. It could be dangerous flying there, especially at night. And I can get their faster on my own.”
- [2014-11-05 15:45:23] <Jugeote> 3“What a load of minotaur dung,” Fleetwing laughed. “I’m way faster than you. Even carrying Bluebell, I’m almost faster than you.” Bluebell looked mildly insulted.
- [2014-11-05 15:45:28] <Jugeote> 3“If it’s dangerous, then that’s another reason not to go alone,” Bluebell insisted. “Oh, and in case you’ve forgotten, we’re not going to get into trouble because Fleetwing and I weren’t banished, Daring. Just you.” She shot Fleetwing a look.
- [2014-11-05 15:45:37] <Jugeote> 3Fleetwing shook his head, shrugged as if to say that was that, and scooped up Bluebell. “Coming?” he asked Daring Do as he shot ahead of her, heading towards Bahari Soko.
- [2014-11-05 15:45:44] <Jugeote> 3“Gaaaah,” Daring Do vented, taking to the air, feeling the warm night air in her feathers. She tipped the pith hat forward on her head so it wouldn’t blow off.

- [2014-11-05 15:52:28] <Jugeote> 3A heat emanates from the grand hall that is the "throat" of the stone snake. The hall is utterly black. At first, Bookwright might think that it is filled with an unnatural darkness like that which the clasp previously alleviated. But then he realizes that the hallway itself is black -- built entirely of stones fashioned from volcanic obsidian.
- [2014-11-05 15:54:08] * Bookwright "They really went all out for this temple. I can actually feel warm air wafting from the... uh. The big stone snake throat. Um. That's really, um. That's. Wow."

- [2014-11-05 16:00:41] <Jugeote> 3They flew for over an hour without speaking, the wind and the sounds of the jungle below filling their ears.
- [2014-11-05 16:00:45] * Bookwright "Ah, you're probably right. It's probably volcanic. Great effect though."
- [2014-11-05 16:00:50] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do spotted dark shapes flitting past the moon-silvered clouds. “Whoa,” Daring Do said, darting ahead of Fleetwing and Bluebell, stretching out her hooves.
- [2014-11-05 16:00:58] <Jugeote> 3“What?” the two of them asked in unison.
- [2014-11-05 16:01:05] <Jugeote> 3“Ahools,” Daring Do warned. She dropped down through the canopy into the jungle below.
- [2014-11-05 16:01:11] <Jugeote> 3She heard Fleetwing dropped through a moment later. “We’ll be safe down here until they pass,” she said.
- [2014-11-05 16:01:18] <Jugeote> 3At the roar of a distant jungle cat, Bluebell nerviously echoed, “Yeah, s-safe.” A moment later, Daring Do was blinded by a dazzling burst of light. Bluebell stuffed the flashlight into her mane. “So long as we don’t get eaten by whatever that was. Or vanished by that... that thing earlier. Wh-what was that?”
- [2014-11-05 16:01:27] <Jugeote> 3‘And what did it do to A.K.?’ Daring Do wanted to hear her ask.
- [2014-11-05 16:01:34] <Jugeote> 3“It was a spirit of whispers,” Fleetwing said knowledgably.
- [2014-11-05 16:01:41] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do and Bluebell both turned to stare at him.
- [2014-11-05 16:01:45] <Jugeote> 3“A what?” Bluebell asked.
- [2014-11-05 16:02:04] <Jugeote> 3“The Faceless. A spirit of whispers,” Fleetwing repeated. “A powerful one, too.” Then, as if reciting, he told them, “Originally native to the upper Zebricon, spirits of whispers are the keepers of secrets and sowers of omens. Silence surrounds them; suspicions and rumors flourish in their wake..."
- [2014-11-05 16:02:13] <Jugeote> 3"...If one is desparate to know a truth or hide one, she may seek a spirit of whispers and attempt to bargain with it.”
- [2014-11-05 16:02:19] <Jugeote> 3“How do you know all that?” Daring Do asked in disbelief. She didn’t recall anything like that covered in class.
- [2014-11-05 16:02:25] <Jugeote> 3“Because while you were buying jewelry, I was buying this,” Fleetwing said smugly, producing a booklet titled A Pony’s Guide to the Spirits of the Zebra Lands. On the cover was a cartoonish picture of a wide-eyed pony surrounded by strange creatures.
- [2014-11-05 16:02:39] <Jugeote> 3Fleetwing held the booklet in one wing while flipping through the pages with his other. Finding the page he was looking for, he held it up for Daring Do and Bluebell to see.
- [2014-11-05 16:02:50] <Jugeote> 3On the center of the page was a primitive drawing of a tall, slender zebra without stripes or facial features and black tentacles writhing from its back. Around the picture were long strings of zebra glyphs with smaller Equestrian translations written underneath. He had quoted it precisely.
- [2014-11-05 16:02:53] <Jugeote> 3“After Professor Underhill and the ambassador did all that talking about the spirits here, I thought it would be a smart investment.”
- [2014-11-05 16:03:08] <Jugeote> 3Maybe it was because she was grieving for her friend, and Fleetwing’s jab about friendship necklace cut cruelly, but the pegasus’ know-it-all grin made Daring Do want to put a hoof in his face. Just a little.
- [2014-11-05 16:03:18] <Jugeote> 3The screeching cry of an ahool cut the night. The three ponies immediately fell silent. Bluebell covered the end of her flashlight with a hoof.
- [2014-11-05 16:03:25] <Jugeote> 3No pony moved, each hoping the creatures would pass by without noticing. Ears strained to catch any sound that would signal the ahools nearness or passing. The air was filled with the sounds of night insects and the rustling of the canopy in the light wind.

- [2014-11-05 16:08:07] * Noble_Heart tilts her head to one side, then the other. "Well, yes. The question is not if it is heated by volcanic liquids. The question is if it -opens- to them, or if it is merely warmed by them on the far side of the walls."
- [2014-11-05 16:08:17] * Bookwright "I want one of those booklets. Like, a lot. If anypony sees one, I call dibs."

- [2014-11-05 16:09:28] * Bookwright "There's a really easy way to test for direct contact with lava. Smell the air. If it smells like sulphur, it's in contact with lava or volcanic gasses." He sticks his muzzle into the mouth and inhales hugely.

- [2014-11-05 16:14:47] * Get_Lost frowns "almost done"
- [2014-11-05 16:14:49] <Jugeote> 3“Bluebell, the book is about spirits,” Fleetwing whispered back. “Ahools are monsters.”
- [2014-11-05 16:14:55] <Jugeote> 3“How can you tell the difference?”
- [2014-11-05 16:15:02] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do thought it was a good question considering the spirits she had encountered. “First the sphinx...” she muttered to herself.
- [2014-11-05 16:15:12] <Jugeote> 3“Spirit of riddles,” Fleetwing whispered informatively. Daring Do gave him a flat look (which he couldn’t see in the darkness).
- [2014-11-05 16:15:25] <Jugeote> 3“Sphinxes are spirits of riddles, or at least a breed of them,” Fleetwing elaborated in a low whisper, pausing briefly to listen for ahools. “Like the Faceless is a spirits of whispers. They’re all catagorized in the book.”
- [2014-11-05 16:15:31] <Jugeote> 3Musing, he added, “Like pegasi, earth ponies and unicorns, I guess. Different kinds of spirits kinda like how there are different kinds of ponies.”
- [2014-11-05 16:15:38] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do shushed at him.
- [2014-11-05 16:15:44] <Jugeote> 3“Oh!” Bluebell’s hoof fell from her flashlight as she turned wide-eyed to Daring, asking, “Did you get a riddle?”
- [2014-11-05 16:15:52] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do sighed and rolled her eyes. “My value becomes lesser with each who knows about me. What am I?”
- [2014-11-05 16:15:57] <Jugeote> 3“A secret,” Fleetwing answered. “Everyone knows that. Wow, if a sphinx gave me that riddle, I’d feel cheated.”
- [2014-11-05 16:16:03] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do nickered. Honestly, she did feel a little cheated. What was the point of a riddle that everyone knew the answer to?
- [2014-11-05 16:16:12] <Jugeote> 3“Well, it /is/ a classic,” Bluebell offered.
- [2014-11-05 16:16:29] <Jugeote> 3“Professor Underhill’s was better,” Daring Do admitted, “But it was just a variation on the theme. ‘My value becomes /greater/ with each who knows about me. What am I?’”
- [2014-11-05 16:16:36] <Jugeote> 3Bluebell ooohed. “So, maybe it’s a two-part riddle?” Daring Do hadn’t considered that.
- [2014-11-05 16:16:42] <Jugeote> 3“Lies?” Fleetwing offered.
- [2014-11-05 16:16:50] <Jugeote> 3Bluebell cocked her head to the side, pondering. “ehhh... Maybe, if it’s like propaganda. But the more ponies know a lie, the greater the chance of it being exposed, right? Doesn’t really fit, does it?
- [2014-11-05 16:16:56] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do thought on that a moment. “Truth?” she offered.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:01] <Jugeote> 3Fleetwing shook his head. “What’s true is true. It doesn’t care how many people know about it.”
- [2014-11-05 16:17:07] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do sighed, staring at the ground resolutely. “It doesn’t matter. I just want to get this Amulet to Bahari Soko and then find a way to get A.K. Yearling’s body back.”
- [2014-11-05 16:17:13] <Jugeote> 3“Who?” Bluebell asked.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:19] <Jugeote> 3“Wait, what’s this about a body?” Fleetwing demanded.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:25] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do looked up sharply. What? Seriously? “A.K. Yearling...” she said slowly, barely reining in her anger. “...Ambassador Goldentongue’s goddaughter? The girl whose body that Faceless took?”
- [2014-11-05 16:17:30] <Jugeote> 3“When was this?” Fleetwing asked, concerned.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:36] <Jugeote> 3“The ambassador had a goddaughter?” Bluebell looked and sounded confused.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:46] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do glared at them, her jaw working. She turned away, spreading her wings. To Tartarus with both of them! She was going to go to Bahari Soko alone.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:52] <Jugeote> 3“Daring, wait!” Bluebell called out.
- [2014-11-05 16:17:59] <Jugeote> 3“Why?” What was wrong with those two? Did they somehow not see what happened? No, Bluebell had definitely seen her carrying A.K.s body. Maybe they didn’t hear that weird, headache-inducing memory-talk that the Faceless had fed right into her brain, but they had to have seen what it did!
- [2014-11-05 16:18:04] <Jugeote> 3Wait. Daring Do frowned, shaking her head and digging at the ground with her hoof. There was something she was missing. Something...
- [2014-11-05 16:18:10] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do felt like she had been splashed with ice water.
- [2014-11-05 16:18:15] <Jugeote> 3“It wasn’t a riddle,” she whispered.
- [2014-11-05 16:18:21] <Jugeote> 3“Huh?” was her companions’ confused response.
- [2014-11-05 16:18:38] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do ignored them, speaking more to herself. Working through it. “The sphinx’s riddle. It wasn’t hard because she wasn’t trying to confuse me. It’s just how she can communicate.”
- [2014-11-05 16:18:48] <Jugeote> 3Spirits, at least some spirits, can’t easy just talk to you. Like the Faceless. A spirit of silence, it had no words of its own. Instead, it spoke through memories of words. “It wasn’t a riddle. It was a /warning/.”
- [2014-11-05 16:18:54] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do turned to face Fleetwing and Bluebell. “Secrets! The sphinx was trying to warn me about the spirit of whispers.”
- [2014-11-05 16:19:00] <Jugeote> 3Like a jigsaw puzzle, the clues began to assemble themselves in Daring Do’s mind.
- [2014-11-05 16:19:16] <Jugeote> 3Hadn’t the primi ordines Jua suggested that Goldentongue was up to something? Something that had enraged the Quetzalcóatl Empress enough for her cultists to come after them? What was it she said? ~“Dark empress’ cult with arrows of fire. Whose foolishness has drawn here her ire?”~
- [2014-11-05 16:19:35] <Jugeote> 3The airship captain Mhalifu, an associate of Goldentongue, had said ~“No, your Empress’ will not win fight when her secrets are exposed to light.”~
- [2014-11-05 16:19:47] <Jugeote> 3Fleetwing’s book had said: ~“If one is desparate to know a truth or hide one, she may seek a spirit of whispers and attempt to bargain with it.”~
- [2014-11-05 16:20:02] <Jugeote> 3~“She will be ready for you before the moon,”~ Goldentongue had told the Faceless.
- [2014-11-05 16:20:17] <Jugeote> 3~“You fools will expose nothing!”~ the cultist had replied. ~“We have your sacrifice, and soon we will have the Amulet!”~
- [2014-11-05 16:20:25] <Jugeote> 3Goldentongue had bargained with the Faceless for the Dark Empress’ secrets. And in return, he had promised the spirit of whispers his goddaughter. The value of a secret becomes greater the fewer people know about it… or in this case, her. A.K. Yearling’s entire existence was being erased!
- [2014-11-05 16:20:30] <Jugeote> 3Daring Do made a strangled sound.
- [2014-11-05 16:20:37] <Jugeote> 3The canopy above them exploded with cultist-mounted ahools!

- [2014-11-05 16:24:50] * Bookwright "But her memory was not erased. It remained with Daring Do, and through her, it is with us to this day. It's not just a nom de plume, it's an attack on the spirit of whispers itself!"
- [2014-11-05 16:24:57] * Get_Lost "but if the ambassador learned something to keep the empress at bay, we could use that information too, since we could be facing her"
- [2014-11-05 16:25:52] * Noble_Heart nods her head. "Not secret. Erased." She frowned, then furrowed her brow. Then her face lit up. "Oh. Oh, oh!" She turned. "That is why it wanted a deal with Golden Dream!" She trotted excitedly in place. "It took A.K. Yearling. But Daring Do made her a name that -everyone- knows! A secret which is secret to no one is worthless! Daring Do found a way to make the sacrifice
- [2014-11-05 16:25:52] * Noble_Heart worthless to the spirit of whispers."
- [2014-11-05 16:43:04] * Jugeote 3waves a hoof towards the black throat. "After you," she offers. "Unless you are still doing 'cyberpony things' and having secret conversations. Or you want to set up some sort of base camp here."
- [2014-11-05 16:45:23] * Golden_Dream thinks, [We better keep moving. The sooner we can find the amulet, the less likely we are to get ambushed from behind.]
- [2014-11-05 16:54:45] <Jugeote> 3Bookwright sniffs at the air. There is the faintest trace of brimstone. But it isn't as pervasive or pungent as he would expect if the black throat lead directly into hell.
- [2014-11-05 16:57:26] * Bookwright "Hmm, just a hint of sulphur. No exposed lava then. Or it's mixed with a looot of fresh air." He peers into the darkness, and lights his horn. "Only thing for it is to continue deeper, I guess."
- [2014-11-05 16:58:46] * Golden_Dream starts following them down after assessing that they probably didn't hear her cough.
- [2014-11-05 17:03:16] <Jugeote> 3The group -- ponies, griffin and pirates -- move into the black throat of the serpent and follow the hallway until it swallows them whole. The slow curve means that soon the entrance is out of sight behind them.
- [2014-11-05 17:03:49] <Jugeote> 3The air grows warmer, but does not feel stale.
- [2014-11-05 17:06:19] <Jugeote> 3Finally, the black throat opens to a vast, craggy pit. A crumbling stone bridge arches over the yawning abyss. A low and persistent heat rises from the pit. And with that heat, a chorus of moans from an unfelt wind.
- [2014-11-05 17:07:28] * CopyCat takes a reflexive step back, shrinking away from the darkness.
- [2014-11-05 17:08:22] * Jugeote 3announces, "The Kutengwa Abyss." To Shatara, "Now, what we want is down there somewhere. I suspect what you want is too. Either way, you're the one who brought wings."
- [2014-11-05 17:10:00] * Shatara nods a little. "What might you be looking for? And what would you have done had we not brought wings?"
- [2014-11-05 17:12:00] * Jugeote 3wiggles her eyebrows. "Wall-climbing potion. We'd prefer not to use that though when there is a much safer option."
- [2014-11-05 17:15:18] * Jugeote 3pats Shatara on the wing. "You and your flying friends just swoop down there, grab whatever you can find, and bring it back. You happen to find anything grail-shaped, we take it, and the rest is yours." She grins. "Sounds fair, right?"
- [2014-11-05 17:17:20] * Shatara nods, also understanding not wanting to use a consumable if can help it at all. Never know when you need it, after all! He nods to her and turns to the others. "They want our help getting across the abyss..." He also thinks towards his companions, in case they're more knowlegable of ponyspeak than they let on. <Also seem to be looking for something grail-shaped. Wait...>
- [2014-11-05 17:20:49] * CopyCat blinks. <Grail-shaped? Choose wisely!>
- [2014-11-05 17:28:10] <Jugeote> 3The other pirates look at Jugeote. She nods.
- [2014-11-05 17:29:39] <Jugeote> 3The stallion then steps forward, saying something in zebra. Parlay happily attempts to translate, but fails.
- [2014-11-05 17:29:49] <Jugeote> 3The zebras begin to argue.
- [2014-11-05 17:30:37] * Shatara blinks as the stripeypones argue incomprehensably. "Secret conversations, eh?"
- [2014-11-05 17:31:48] * CopyCat takes another step back, looking at her friends with worry.
- [2014-11-05 17:32:14] * Golden_Dream rubs her mane. [Shit. What should I do, folks? Should I get out of th' shadows and come down with y'all, or keep an eyeball on tweedle dee, dum, and didley?]
- [2014-11-05 17:33:40] * Bookwright [You should sneak your little adorable butt down here so you can support us if-and-slash-or /when/ these pirates try to betray us!]
- [2014-11-05 17:39:22] * Jugeote 3turns to Shatara. "My friend here thinks one of your winged friends should carry one of us down there with you," she says. "He volunteers."
- [2014-11-05 17:41:31] * Shatara looks between Noble_Heart and CopyCat. "So uh...they want us to go down there and get all the stuff. And one of them wants to come with..."
- [2014-11-05 17:42:15] * CopyCat blinks at Shatara. "Do we get to choose? Can we take the pretty one?"
- [2014-11-05 17:42:38] * Bookwright "Tell them they should wait up here where it's safe while we go down and make sure it's safe for them to come."
- [2014-11-05 17:42:52] * Noble_Heart moves forwards to peer into the darkness below. "That sounds dangerous. Why do they believe that there is anything of value in the depths below? Surely if they had the cloaks they could have come here any time before now."
- [2014-11-05 17:49:15] * Golden_Dream thinks at the little private chat. [Noble, Shatara, Copycat, what do y'all think?]
- [2014-11-05 17:50:25] * Noble_Heart tilts her head to one side. "We think it is very likely these pirates will wish to take whatever they can get. But doubtless came here looking for something specific. It seems unlikely they would brave such a dangerous place at random. But what, and why, we cannot say."
- [2014-11-05 17:52:04] <Shatara> <They did mention the grail-thing...and I'm guessing stripeyguy wants to come with to make sure we don't pocket it...>
- [2014-11-05 17:53:10] <Golden_Dream> [What's t' say that they don't wanna swipe our thing?]
- [2014-11-05 17:53:41] <Shatara> <one of him and three of us at the bottom of a pit of doom?>
- [2014-11-05 17:54:59] * Noble_Heart points out, <They entered this temple ahead of us. Before they were likely to know it was our destination. It is more likely they came here seeking whatever they want, and will take an opportunistic chance to take what we want from us. Or at least possibly so.>
- [2014-11-05 17:56:43] * Bookwright [On the other hoof, if we take one of them with us, we're literally taking them to Tartarus. So there's that."
- [2014-11-05 17:59:56] <Jugeote> 3The pirates watch the ponies with a mixture of less than pleasant expressions. Jugeote finally tells Shatara in her oddly-accented griffin, "Personally, I'm against the idea. But that's up to you. As long as we get what we came for, I see no reason everyone can't walk out happy."
- [2014-11-05 18:00:02] * Noble_Heart steps back from the edge. <It seems unlikely the amulet would be below. But it might be across.>
- [2014-11-05 18:01:37] * CopyCat bites her lip. The next step... figuratively throwing themselves in the Abyss... was quite daunting now she was faced with it. She swallows. "I'd... rather not go down if there's a chance it is across, like Noble_Heart said. The Abyss isn't going anywhere."
- [2014-11-05 18:07:22] <Jugeote> 3--- End of Session ---
