  1. Keiju: That's right, did you hae an idea for what you're going to call the language?
  2. Matz: A subsidiary of Hitachi was doing advertisements.
  3. Matz: Hmm -- as long as it is similar enough to "shell". How about Tish?
  4. Matz: But I'd kinda like something a bit cooler
  5. Keiju: Tish is toilet paper in English?
  6. Matz: You're thinking of "tissue".
  7. Keiju: What does Tish mean then?
  8. Matz: It doesn't mean anything.
  9. Matz: There is no word "tish" anywhere.
  10. Keiju: What is it then? Some sort of abbreviation thingy?
  11. Matz: It has absolutely no meaning, it's just supposed to sound good.
  12. Keiju: I dunno...
  13. Matz: We'll invest it with meaning later [through use].
  14. Keiju: I suppose you could do that.
  15. Matz: I though of one earlier for a language I wrote which never saw the light of day: Pit.
  16. Matz: It means "pit."
  17. Keiju: Dude, that's awful.
  18. Matz: I think I had some sort of strategy at the time... whoops, forgot it.
  19. Keiju: Call it "ruby."
  20. Keiyu; It should be a gemstone.
  21. Matz: Ruby as in "to place pronunciation guides over characters in Japanese" ruby?
  22. Matz: Why a gemstone?
  23. Matz: Is it Mitsubishi's influence? [Editor's note: Mitsubishi's corporate logos involve diamon motifs.]
  24. Keiju: Perl.
  25. Matz: Ah, gotcha.
  26. Matz: But shouldn't we make it "rubie" then? [A gemstone with a spelling mistake in it, like perl.]
  27. Keiju: But "perl" is related to the shell.
  28. Matz: Whoa, never knew that.
  29. Matz: No, I never *realized* that.
  30. Keiju: That might have been intentional. Spiffy huh.
  31. Matz: Yeah.
  32. Keiju: Pearls come from what shellfish again?
  33. Matz: Any of them can make a pearl.
  34. Keiju: Really?
  35. Keiju: That's how it is?
  36. Matz: The pretty ones are from *akoyagu*.
  37. Keiju: Yeah, those.
  38. Keiju: That's why they call them "pearl oysters" in English.
  39. Matz: Oysters can make pearls, too.
  40. Keiju: What the heck did you just write? [Translation note: Matz used a traditional way to write "oyster." I couldn't read it either.]
  41. Matz: Oy ster.
  42. Matz: But akoyagu are "pearl oysters." We can't use that!
  43. Keiju: How about "oyster"?
  44. Matz: "ruby" sounds better.
  45. Matz: I have a feeling I've seen a "coral" before.
  46. Matz: That's coral like coral coral.
  47. Keiju: Yeah, I have a feeling I've heard of a techy coral, too.
  48. Matz: There was some software -- Coral Draw or something.
  49. Keiju: Bisque.
  50. Keiju: Coral sounds nice.
  51. Matz: Bisque sounds nice but doesn't exactly flow.
  52. Matz: I really think there was a Coral.
  53. Keiju: Yeah...
  54. Keiju: Wasn't it an OS?
  55. Matz: Really? Too bad, sounded nice.
  56. Keiju: Could you check the yellow book for me? [Translation note: He's referring to a particular reference book, I think.]
  57. Matz: There was Chorus and Clouds but no Coral.
  58. Kejyu: Geez you're fast.
  59. Matz: Nah, it wasn't written in the Nikkei reference book either.
  60. Keiju: Hmm...
  61. Keiju: Well, if we can't find anything by that name, how about "coral"?
  62. Matz: Is it alright if we don't check for things other than OSes?
  63. Keiju: Hopefully it wouldn't be a language name.
  64. Matz: So, OSes and languages.
  65. Keiju: A company name would be a bad idea.
  66. Keiju: Or a trademark.
  67. Matz: How about we ask the editors to figure that out?
  68. Keiju: Whether there is or isn't a name conflict?
  69. Matz: Let's just pick a codename.
  70. Matz: Temporarily, just for the project.
  71. Keiju: Alright.
  72. Matz: What did you like most of the above?
  73. Keiju: I kinda like coral.
  74. Matz: I kinda like ruby as a codename.
  75. Keiju: Meh, ruby is alright, too.
  76. Matz: Yeah, but I like coral, too...
  77. Matz: Drats.
  78.
  79. Mr. Matsumoto [n.b. the email is written from the perspective of Keiju. He is addressing Matz consistent with the norms of Japanese polite society.]
  80. quoted the above chat in an email:
  81.
  82. >> item: Do we make the codename ruby or coral?
  83. >> coral sounds worse than perl (probably) so let's drop it.
  84. >> I think ruby is my birthstone...
  85.
  86. So I said "Yeah, let's make it Ruby."
  87.
  88. And that's how we picked Ruby.
