  1. “Understood. Well, then… as of now, in order to protect the
  2. Human World and its residents, I, Alice Synthesis Thirty, will
  3. discard my mission as an integrity kni… gh… ah…!!”
  4.
  5. The bold proclamation turned into a piercing scream all of a
  6. sudden. Her body, clad in that golden armor, bent backwards
  7. and her right hand pressed against her right eye. Was her
  8. ordered face being warped by some enormous, intense pain
  9. right now?
  10.
  11. Despite my surprise, I instinctively recalled the scene I saw
  12. two days ago as I got up onto my feet.
  13.
  14. Eugeo who sliced off the second-ranked elite swordsman-intraining,
  15. Humbert Zizek, in order to save Ronie and Tizei. By the
  16. time I ran in, his right eye had already blown off without a trace,
  17. the gushing fresh blood flowing down his cheek as crimson
  18. tears.
  19.
  20. That night, Eugeo talked about it bit by bit in the academy’s
  21. disciplinary chamber. The moment he tried to cut Humbert, his
  22. right hand froze as though it wasn’t his own and his right eye
  23. burned with pain, he said. And before his eyes, unfamiliar
  24. sacred letters appeared, glowing deep red—
  25.
  26. That same phenomenon Eugeo talked about might be
  27. assailing Alice right now. It was likely some sort of
  28. psychological block. Its trigger would be the act of opposing a
  29. regulation carved upon one’s soul.
  30.
  31. “Don’t think about anything! Freeze your thoughts!”
  32.
  33. I shouted so while approaching Alice and held onto her
  34. armored left shoulder with my right hand. And my left hand
  35. caught the tormented knight’s right wrist, gently pulling it away
  36. from her right eye.
  37.
  38. “……!?”
  39.
  40. On Alice’s eye that should have been sapphire-blue, I saw a
  41. flickering red light and swallowed my breath. I peered closer in
  42. order to ascertain the true form of that light.
  43.
  44. Upon the perfectly circular blue iris in Alice’s widely opened
  45. right eye.
  46.
  47. Delicate lines were lined up in a radial pattern on the outside,
  48. glowing red while they slowly rotated. There was no fixed
  49. pattern to the lines’ thickness and the way they were ordered,
  50. too, was random. As though—it was a bar code.
  51.
  52. I had guessed that the one who inserted this psychological
  53. block into the Underworld people was the highest minister,
  54. Administrator, ever since I heard the story from Eugeo.
  55. However, I had absolutely no memory of spotting anything
  56. resembling bar codes in these two years.
  57.
  58. —It wasn’t done by Administrator…? But in that case, just
  59. who…?
  60.
  61. It was then, when I let out a short gasp.
  62. The circular bar code ceased its rotation and drew a horizontal
  63. list of strange symbols atop Alice’s contracted pupil. The string
  64. of characters that surfaced, glowing deep crimson, appeared to
  65. be [TЯƎ⅃A MƎTƧYƧ].
  66.
  67. I was momentarily confused about what it signified, but
  68. immediately noticed.
  69.
  70. It was mirrored text. Alice’s eye, directly under the line of text,
  71. should be seeing it in a horizontally flipped form. In other
  72. words, it said [SYSTEM ALERT].
  73.
  74. System alert. To me, it was an familiar, unpleasant warning
  75. that popped out every now and then when utilizing a PC, but it
  76. should be a nonsensical phrase to those in the Underworld, like
  77. Alice. In this world, only the «Common Tongue»—which would
  78. be Japanese, was used in daily life, while English, «Sacred
  79. Tongue», was treated by most of the inhabitants as something
  80. that impossible and pointless to understand.
  81.
  82. If one studied the sacred arts, though one would be able to
  83. chant various English vocabulary, starting from the initial
  84. «system call», I doubt that person would be too aware of the
  85. exact meaning the words held. I had taught Eugeo some of the
  86. meanings behind the names of skills for the secret moves of the
  87. Aincrad style, the sword skills, but he always found it strange
  88. how I possessed knowledge of the Sacred Tongue.
  89.
  90. In short, this string of characters, SYSTEM ALERT, would
  91. hardly make any sense to the people of the Underworld. In
  92. other words, the one who inserted this psychological block into
  93. Alice, Eugeo, and the rest was no Administrator, but humans
  94. from the real world—namely, someone within Rath’s staff; I
  95. suppose that would be how it was…
  96.
  97. My rapidly whirling thoughts were interrupted by Alice’s
  98. weak scream from point-blank range.
  99.
  100. “Aaah… my right eye is, it’s burning…! And… these are…
  101. letters…!?”
  102.
  103. “Don’t think about anything! Empty your mind!!”
  104.
  105. Crying out in a fluster, I held Alice’s petite face between my
  106. hands.
  107.
  108. “What’s happening to you is probably similar to a
  109. psychological barrier activated when you tried to oppose the
  110. church. It should be trying to urge you into absolute obedience
  111. by causing pain to your right eye… your eyeball will burst out if
  112. you continue thinking!”
  113.
  114. It only took a moment to explain that, but in this case,
  115. persistently insisting might bring about a reverse effect instead.
  116. No human could be disciplined enough to stop their thoughts
  117. when told to do so.
  118.
  119. Upon hearing my voice, Alice shut her two eyes tightly. But
  120. the red words projected onto her eyes probably wouldn’t
  121. disappear from just that. The knight’s hands fumbled in the air
  122. and gripped onto my shoulders the moment they found them.
  123. My muscles grated from the force her monstrously strong
  124. hands put upon them each time a faint scream escaped her, but
  125. it was nothing compared to the pain Alice must be feeling.
  126.
  127. Figuring it would help if I could calm down her thoughts, I
  128. shifted half of my thoughts to thinking up of any possible
  129. methods even as I firmly held Alice’s face between my two
  130. palms.
  131.
  132. Alice and several other integrity knights had already broken
  133. the Taboo Index once. After all, they were taken away by the
  134. Axiom Church and underwent the Synthesis Ritual because of
  135. that.
  136.
  137. However, Alice, in particular, shouldn’t have had her right eye
  138. burst off when she committed the taboo of «Trespassing into
  139. the Dark Territory» eight years ago. I hadn’t heard anything of
  140. that sort from Eugeo. According to his explanation, the young
  141. Alice had apparently tottered over the boundary line without
  142. thinking. In other words, that would mean that a clear intent to
  143. commit a taboo wasn’t in Alice’s mind at that time.
  144.
  145. The psychological barrier currently assailing Alice likely
  146. reacted to a proactive intent to violate a rule she was given. The
  147. moment one held such intent, the right eye would first hurt and
  148. the red SYSTEM ALERT would then throw the target’s mind into
  149. disarray, planting a deeper awe for the taboo once again.
  150. Conducting a psychological barrier like this that could only be
  151. considered a work of god on the inhabitants of the Underworld
  152. who basically didn’t break laws would likely cement their
  153. obedience to no end.
  154.
  155. But if this psychological had been handed down by Rath’s
  156. staff, it would bring up a huge contradiction.
  157.
  158. After all, the goal of the experiment being conducted in this
  159. Underworld was likely the creation of artificial fluct lights
  160. capable of judging between the right and wrong of a rule they
  161. were given. Even after the people of the Underworld had tried
  162. so hard for a breakthrough, forcefully driving them back with
  163. such a slipshod, violent psychological block could only be
  164. considered as a mix-up in their priorities.
  165.
  166. In other words, those who had inserted this system alert were
  167. purposefully impeding the success of this experiment—could
  168. that be it?
  169.
  170. In that case, who exactly is that person and for what goal?
  171. Heathcliff… Kayaba Akihiko’s duplicated consciousness came
  172. to mind for an instant, but I immediately rejected that notion.
  173. He and his desire to create a true alternate world would not
  174. hinder the progress of artificial fluct lights. In the first place,
  175. such a heavy-handed method was not to that man’s style. I
  176. suppose this had to be some influence or personal sabotage
  177. against that organization, Rath.
  178.
  179. I could envision the existence of various hostile forces if the
  180. one directing Rath was the Self-Defense Forces member,
  181. Kikuoka Seijirou. For example, a group with internal opposition
  182. towards Kikuoka with in the Self-Defense Forces, a large
  183. company monopolizing the domestic defense industry, or if I let
  184. my imagination run wild, even a foreign arms manufacturer or
  185. intelligence agency wouldn’t be out of the question.
  186.
  187. However, if those humongous influences had planned to
  188. hinder Rath, would they take such an intricate measure? If they
  189. possessed enough authority to insert an interference program
  190. into the artificial fluct lights, couldn’t they merely deal with it
  191. with haste and destroy the Light Cube Cluster, the true body of
  192. the Underworld?
  193.
  194. In other words, that would mean that someone was
  195. intentionally delaying the experiment without the desire to
  196. completely wipe it out. Could that person be waiting for
  197. something by slowing down the experiment? Something on a
  198. large scale that required much preparation—for example…
  199. The theft of the experiment’s results, including the Light Cube
  200. Cluster itself.
  201.
  202. As I reached that conclusion, horrified, Alice’s weak voice
  203. suddenly came from between my hands.
  204.
  205. “…Horrible…”
  206.
  207. Startled back, I looked down at the integrity knight’s face.
  208. Her eyebrows that had always maintained a graceful line
  209. were pressed together tight, drops of water resided in the
  210. corners of her eyes, and she had bitten down on her lips hard
  211. enough to draw blood.
  212.
  213. Those pallid lips trembled and let out disconnected words
  214. once more.
  215.
  216. “This is… horrible… To have not just my memories, but my
  217. consciousness, too… be manipulated by… someone else…”
  218. Gripping my shoulders, Alice two hands strongly shook with
  219. grief, or perhaps anger.
  220.
  221. “The one… who burned these red sacred letters into my
  222. eyes… was it… the highest minister…?”
  223.
  224. “No… I don’t think so.”
  225.
  226. I unconsciously shook my head.
  227.
  228. “It’s an existence that created this world and observes it from
  229. the outside… one among the «gods» that had not made an
  230. appearance in the creation of the world lore.”
  231.
  232. “…Gods…”
  233.
  234. Clear drops flowed down from Alice’s eyes without a sound.
  235.
  236. “So the gods would not trust us… even after we, the integrity
  237. knights, spent these countless days fighting without end to
  238. protect this world they had wrought. Taking my memories of
  239. my family, and my sister, and on top of that, performing such a
  240. seal upon me… forcing me into obedience…”
  241.
  242. I couldn’t begin to imagine how much shock, confusion, and
  243. despair Alice who had lived as a knight of the gods must be
  244. feeling now. Alice’s eyelids suddenly flashed open as I looked on
  245. without saying a word, unable to breathe.
  246.
  247. The mirrored, horizontal words on the blue iris of her right
  248. eye shone vividly even now. However, Alice appeared to pay it
  249. no heed, merely staring at the skies in front—at the bluishwhite
  250. moon floating among the black clouds.
  251.
  252. “I am not your puppet!”
  253.
  254. However hoarse it might have been, Alice still shouted with
  255. dignity.
  256.
  257. “Certainly, I might be an existence created by someone’s hand.
  258. But I have my own consciousness too! I want to protect this
  259. world… I want to protect the many people living in this world. I
  260. want to protect my family and my little sister. That is the one
  261. and only mission I will strive for!!”
  262.
  263. The glow of the text in her right eye increased in intensity
  264. while letting out a piercing, metallic noise. The bar code etched
  265. onto the outside of her iris, too, began to rotate rapidly.
  266.
  267. “Alice…!”
  268.
  269. Expecting that phenomenon to happen any time now, I cried
  270. out.
  271.
  272. Without turning her eyes towards me, Alice whispered in a
  273. stifled voice.
  274.
  275. “Kirito… hold me tight.”
  276.
  277. “……Sure.”
  278.
  279. I couldn’t do anything but nod. Taking my hands off Alice’s
  280. face, I moved them to the armor on her shoulders. Strongly
  281. holding down the knight’s body trembling in small jolts beyond
  282. that golden armor.
  283.
  284. Alice shrugged her long, golden hair once, before proudly
  285. gazing up towards the skies and took in a deep breath.
  286.
  287. “The highest minister, Administrator… and you nameless
  288. gods!! For the goals I must achieve… I will fight against you!!”
  289.
  290. An unbounded proclamation that had a refined echo.
  291.
  292. The moment it faded off, a deep crimson shaft of light left
  293. Alice’s right eye.
  294.
  295. A warm splash of blood stained my cheeks.
  296.
  297. (Alicization Dividing, 172-182)
