#NUMBER - Chinese name (transliteration in pinyin/拼音, how it's translated in official Water Margin/水浒传 translations (along with removed/added words in parenthesis if necessary), "rough translation")
All rough translations are translated using a machine translator, so the quality of the translations may range from "this makes absolute perfect sense" (invery rare cases), "the grammar is a little off, but I guess that I get the general point of this..." "OK, so they used the wrong word in this context" to "OH GOD WHAT IS THIS, IT DOESN'T EVEN SLIGHTLY MAKE SENSE!". However, the rough translations are only temporary placeholders, as no respectable translation of any kind would even use "machine translated" text as the actual script (if it did, it would be on par with many 80s to mid-90s arcade/NES games from Japan (perhaps even worse than that), back when translation wasn't as big of an issue as it is now, and we all know how Engrish-y they are. Heck, it was the very reason why All Your Base Are Belong To Us from Zero Wing's European Sega Mega Drive "localization" even existed). So these translations need to be proofread/properly translated by anyone (with major bilingual knowledge of both Mandarin Chinese and English) reading this and willing to do so.
This text dump only lists and translates the entries of the various collectible monsters in the game's equivalent of Pokemon's Pokedex. It does not yet translate any of the rest of the game. However, it's a start, and hopefully the rest of the game's text will be dumped too.
#1 - 宋江 (Sòngjiāng, Song Jiang/Sung Chiang)
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 神獸之首。全身泛著紫藍色的神祕電光。
PINYIN: "Shénshòu zhī shǒu. Quánshēn fànzhe zǐ lán sè de shénmì diànguāng."
ROUGH TRANSLATION: "The first animal. Body glowing purple mysterious blue lightning."
#2 - 玉麒麟 (Yù qílín, Jade Quilin, "Jade Kirin"/"Jade Unicorn")
OD: 非常有靈性的神獸。頭上的角，就是玉麒麟的能量中心喲！
PI: "Fēicháng yǒu língxìng de shénshòu. Tóushàng de jiǎo, jiùshì yù qílín de néngliàng zhōngxīn yō!"
RT: "Very spiritual animal. Horns, Kirin is the energy center (yo)!" (doesn't sound right)  (NOTE: "yō"/"喲" is a "final particle", means nothing)
#3 -  吳用 (Wú yòng, Wu Yong, "Wu")
OD: 頭上的智慧之星，只要凝視就會有充滿智慧的感覺。
PI: "Tóushàng de zhìhuì zhī xīng, zhǐyào níngshì jiù huì yǒu chōngmǎn zhìhuì de gǎnjué."

#5 - 大刀 (Dàdāo, Great Blade, "Broadsword"/"Sword")
OD:  古代的邪刀～鬼鈴，在戰亂中飽食人血後，轉化而成的刀魂。
PI: "Gǔdài de xié dāo ~guǐ líng, zài zhànluàn zhōng bǎoshí rén xuè hòu, zhuǎnhuà ér chéng de dāo hún"
RT: "The ancient evil knife ~ ghost bell, after the war satiation in human blood, turned into a Soul Calibur." (NOTE: this translation's apparent anachronistic reference to the Namco fighting game Soul Calibur needs to be looked at to see if it's wrong. It is most likely wrong, but this is an unlicensed Taiwanese GBC game that derives from various sources (most notably Pokemon) we're talking about, plus it wouldn't be the first time Vast Fame has derived from a copyrighted fighting game they don't own any rights to (Vast Fame DID indeed develop and release a vs fighting game for the Game Boy Color called "格鬥劍神"/"Gédòu jiàn shén"/Soul Falchion in 2002, and although it has more to do with the fighters of SNK's The Last Blade and Samurai Shodown on a modified weapons-based version of the GB King of Fighters engine, its "official" English title definitely derives from Soul Calibur). Keep in mind that Soul Calibur was first released in Japanese arcades in 1998 (shortly predating Shui Hu Shen Shou's 2001 release, which in turn predated Soul Calibur II's 2002 release), Soul Calibur’s title can also be translated to "劍魂"/"jiàn hún" as well as "刀魂"/"dāo hún" (although of note that native Chinese people would say that monster #5 specifically resembles a dao/"刀" weapon, not a jian/"劍"), and "刀魂" can also literally mean "sword spirit". On an unrelated note, apparently "～"'s usage in this context is similar to the European colon/":" symbol rather than a prolonged vowel)

#6 - 林沖 (Línchōng, Lin Chong, "Lin")
OD: 猛烈的拳擊力量，似乎連山都打得破的感覺……

#7 - 霹靂火 (Pīlì huǒ, Fiery Thunderbolt, "Thunderbolt")
OD: 出生三昧眞火裡的神獸，一生氣就會把敵人燃燒怠盡！
PI: Chūshēng sānmèi zhēn huǒ lǐ de shénshòu, yī shēngqì jiù huì bǎ dírén ránshāo dài jǐn! (note: 三昧真火/"Sanmeizhenhuo" is an old word from Taoism and apparently hard to literally translate, but roughly means "fire from wood, fire from stone, fire from sky". According to some translations of Journey to the West, or 西游记, it means "True Samādhi Fire", a power developed by the Red Boy character. It is possible that 三昧眞火 is a typo of 三昧真火 as a result of typing "zhen" and being converted to the wrong Chinese character, either that or a possible untranslatable pun)

#8 - 雙鞭将 (Shuāng biān jiāng, Double Clubs (with "jiāng" added at the end), "Whip will")

#9 - 小李廣 (Xiǎo lǐ guǎng, Little Li Guang, "Little Li") (NOTE: Li Guang was a famous Chinese general/archer during the Han Dynasty who lived until 119 BC. No relation to the Water Margin character Hua Rong (on which #9 is based on), as "Little Li Guang" is merely a nickname)

#10 - 小旋風 (Xiǎo xuànfēng, Little Whirlwind, "Small Tornado/Cyclone")
OD: 有時突然一陣強風吹得張不開眼睛，那就是小旋風的傑作了！

#16 - 沒羽箭 (Méi yǔ jiàn, Featherless Arrow, "No Yu Jian")

"鎗"/"qiāng" is most likely referring to the qiang spear weapon the monster is holding in its sprite, not any model of a modern shotgun)
#19 - 急先鋒 (Jí xiānfēng, Impatient Vanguard, "Vanguard"/"Pioneer")

Also, 太歲/"tàisuì"/Tai Sui is an old Chinese Taoist/Feng Shui term for stars directly opposite of Jupiter that influence the Chinese zodiac, hence the rough translations that contain the word "Jupiter")

#30 - 浪裡白 (Làng lǐ bái, White (Stripe) in the Waves, "Waves in white") (NOTE: Was originally 浪里白條/"Làng lǐ báitiáo" in the original Water Margin, but shortened and changed to 浪裡白 for technical reasons)

#37 - 神機 (Shén jī, Resourceful (Strategist), "God Machine") (NOTE: Was originally spelled out as 神機軍師/"Shén jī jūnshī" in the original Water Margin, shortened to 神機 for technical reasons)

The Water Margin character Sun Li, on which #39 is based, is nicknamed "Sick Yuchi" because of his resemblance to the general, but paler complexion)

PI: "Shēntǐ jiù xiàng shì miánhuā yīyàng róuruǎn, dōngtiān bàozhe tā huì hěn wēnnuǎn yō!"
RT: "Body as soft as cotton, it will be very warm winter holding yo!"  (NOTE: As with creature #2, "yō"/"喲" is a "final particle", means nothing)
#42 - 百勝將 (Bǎishèng jiāng, General of Hundred Victories, Supreme would/will)
OD: 在戰場上。如果有牠的幫助，就一定會打勝仗。
PI: "Zài zhànchǎng shàng. Rúguǒ yǒu tā de bāngzhù, jiù yīdìng huì dǎ shèngzhàng."
RT: "On the battlefield. If it helps, they will win the war." (NOTE: Or "win battles", or "be victorious". The description sounds an awful lot like Victini's, even though Shui Hu Shen Shou was released 9 years prior to Pokemon Black/White)
#43 - 天目將 (Tiānmù jiāng, General of Heavenly Vision, Tianmu/Third eye/Celestial eye will/would)

PI: "Zhǐyào kànzhe tā de yǎnjīng, jiù yǒu bèi cuī de wéixiǎn……"
RT: "Just look in its eyes, there was a reminder of the dangers ......" (NOTE: as far as monster #43's sprite shows, it only has a single eye. The Chinese language has a lack of significant "grammatical numbers" like English does, relying on "numerical classifiers" instead, and real-life creatures are expected to have multiple eyes (generally two). So, a more accurate translation would be to replace "eyes" with "eye", no plural)

This is presumably because 病大虫 can also literally be interpreted to mean "Disease Big Insect" when separating the three hanzi, creating a pun that cannot be as easily understood in English, since 大虫/"dà chóng" means "beast"/"tiger", while 大 means "big" and 虫 means "insect". Also of note that for some reason, the game decides to use the Simplified Chinese version of 病大蟲 even though most of the rest of the game is in Traditional. This is presumably to save space on the ROM, as Chinese is already a space-demanding writing system to begin with, possibly even moreso than Japanese. Of note that Shui Hu Shen Shou already uses 2,904 total 16x16 characters for use by the text printing engine (the original Japanese version of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the first game in the Zelda series to make use of Japanese kanji outside of its title screen, only uses approximately less than 10% of that amount of characters by comparison, and that's counting the Latin characters and Hylian symbols). This includes hanzi, punctuation, arrows for signs directing where to go, and the Arabic numerals 0, 1, 5, and 8 (108 is a prominent number both the game and the original Water Margin due to the "108 Stars of Destiny"))

#101 - 母大虫 (Mǔ dà chóng, Female Tiger, "Mother Beast") (NOTE: Same explanation as monster #84, except now 母 means "mother"/"female", and the sprite looks like a bug that's a cross between the Pokemon Venonat, Weedle, and a little bit of Venomoth. Also opts to use the Simplified Chinese nickname, same explanation.)
OD: 會發電的電氣蟲類。頭上的電氣鬚可凝聚大氣中的電分子。

#103 - 母夜叉 (Mǔ yèchā, Female Yaksha, "Dominatrix/Hag/Bitch(es)") (NOTE: A yaksha is a nature spirit who is benevolent caretaker of the natural treasures within the earth and tree roots. Although according to Nciku, 母夜叉 can also be a derogatory slang word for "an ugly and fierce woman" (a possible English equivalent is "hag", "witch", "shrew"), most likely derived from the original Water Margin, as Sun Erniang (on which monster #109 is based on) used heavy cosmetics. The double meaning could explain why monster #103 looks like an "expy" of the Pokemon Jynx, complete with the all-too-controversial blackface-like look (Keep in mind that by the time Shui Hu Shen Shou was released, Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal were already out at that point (where Jynx's skin color was changed to purple only on non-Japanese versions), and Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire wouldn't be released in Japan for another year (where Jynx's skin color was changed to purple for all releases, even the Japanese version))
OD: 會跳出一種不可思議的魅惑之舞，然再把獵物吃掉。
PI: "Huì tiàochū yīzhǒng bùkěsīyì de mèihuò zhī wǔ, rán zài bǎ lièwù chī diào."

#107 - 鼓上蚤 (Gǔ shàng zǎo, Flea on a Drum, "Drum on fleas")

#108 - 金毛犬 (Jīnmáo quǎn, Golden Haired Hound, "Golden Retriever Dog")
OD: 全身長出火焰的毛皮，如果不認識的，就會被灼傷。
PI: "Quán shēncháng chū huǒyàn de máopí, rúguǒ bù rènshí de, jiù huì bèi zhuóshāng."
RT: "Body fur grow flame, if you do not know, it will be burned."

Other side notes in general: The original game used 3 maximum 16x16 characters for names, so once the font gets converted to a Latin 8x8 font, that will up the character limit to 12. Admittedly, that is a little bit more leeway than what non-Japanese Pokemon names allowed prior to Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, so having a 12-character limit brings it on par with Pokemon Black/White (and their respective sequels) and X/Y/Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire's naming limit. However, even 12 characters are not enough to convey the literal intent of the nicknames. So, sadly for Water Margin purists, the translation will have to "localize" the names to put it more in line with the sometimes punny English naming conventions of Pokemon. Expanding the character limit would be tough to pull off while still making the game look good (heck, as noted many times, even the original Water Margin nicknames from the original Chinese version of the game had to be changed and/or shortened to omit one character, sometimes even two), so even if we added 4 extra 8x8 characters to the limit (making it 18 total characters), it still wouldn't be enough to convey the very long nicknames' literal intent. If done right, the names would be considered a "Woolseyism" and actually a better choice than the original. However, we shouldn't stray too much from the original script (see: Tomato/Clyde Mandelin's complaints about J2E's fan translation of Final Fantasy IV (then known as Final Fantasy II in North America), http://legendsoflocalization.com/reader-feedback-ffivs-fan-translation/ and http://legendsoflocalization.com/final-fantasy-iv/baron/). Besides, it's not like Suikoden (another RPG loosely based on Water Margin, but this time for the PS1 and Saturn, developed by the Japanese company Konami, and officially licensed by their respective consoles' manufacturers) and its many sequels kept the names even in the original Japanese versions anyway. On the topic of name translation, only the monsters with actual Chinese names rather than nicknames will keep their names in English for story reasons (you'll see why once you actually play the game). Their names should be short enough to fit the 12 character limit.
