  1. Phoenotopia 100% Q&A 3.0
  2. ========================
  3. Q: What is this game?
  4. A: It's a free online Zelda-inspired 2D platformer provided by Newgrounds. It's also hosted at http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/phoenotopia, which is my preference because it's easier to refresh on OneMoreLevel than on Newgrounds, and also because I am more familiar with OneMoreLevel.
  5.
  6. Q: Why would you run a game like this?
  7. A: Because it's fun. (http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/561/280/7f5.gif)
  8.
  9. Q: What is required for 100%?
  10. A: All Heart Rubies, all Moonstones, Blood Ring, Nebula Armlet, Lucky Belt, Ancient Armor, Morning Star, Ki Spear Technique Scroll, and giving Translucent Meat to the chef in Daea.
  11.
  12. Q: If the Lamp is not required for 100%, why buy it?
  13. A: There are a number of areas (such as Mul Cavern, the well in Atai, Daea sewers, and that one Heart Ruby puzzle in Great Walls) that would be extremely difficult without it. Basically, for safety.
  14.
  15. Q: What do RTA and IGT mean?
  16. A: Real Time Attack and In Game Time. The former is shown on the splits, and the latter is shown in the credits. The in-game timer is a little funky compared to real time, so pay no heed to the difference between them.
  17.
  18. Q: What's so special about Phoenotopia as a speedgame?
  19. A: Phoenotopia may seem relatively solid to those who have played it casually, but it is actually more broken than you may think. There is one primary glitch that is abused throughout the primary stages of the run: Loot Duping. When a loot container is broken multiple times on the same frame, its monetary yield is multiplied by as many times as it is broken on that frame. The easiest way to exploit this is to throw the loot container at a corner, making it collide with the wall and the floor simultaneously.
  20. Through my investigation of this game, I have figured out all possible applications of this trick, and they are shown on the following document:

  22. I initially thought that the trick was pixel-perfect, but now I realize that it's a three-pixel window.
  23. There is also a glitch that allows you to push key doors if you have a container with another container or a bomb on top and slightly to the right. Don't ask me why this happens, because I have no idea.
  24. Along with that, there is actually a method of clipping through certain obstacles, which is described later on.
  25. Also, in Ancient's Crater, you can skip every lockout battle. The first three are skipped by chucking a bomb far enough that it lands on the barricade and running past the bomb before it explodes (although I failed to skip the first and the third). The fourth, which skips an annoying Harpy battle, requires a stamina boost, a relatively precise jump, and a slowed descent using the Rocket Boots.
  26.
  27. Q: Why are you moving around weirdly with that chest / piggy bank / box over your head?
  28. A: See the information above regarding Loot Duping.
  29.
  30. Q: How did you clip through that door/wall/barricade?
  31. A: When Gale tries to jump with a container on top of her head, the game moves her to the nearest available space in any straight direction (up, down, left, or right). With proper positioning and—given you're not clipping through a key door from the left side—proper placement of surrounding objects, the nearest available space will be just past the door/wall/barricade. Another quirk about this trick: if the container on Gale's head contains a collectible item—e.g., a moonstone or inventory item—then Gale will collect that item and, less importantly, jump slightly higher than usual after the clip.
  32.
  33. Q: What happened to your splits?
  34. A: I deleted them all (except the last one) primarily because the route has gone through a number of changes since my 1:59:43 run, and also because good splits make me nervous.
  35.
  36. Q: What is this "early meat" you're talking about?
  37. A: Normally, you would have to farm in Misty Gorge 2 for Translucent Meat, but there is a Ghost Wasp swarm just before the Heart Ruby obtained in the first visit, so why not pick at that swarm instead of sitting idly by while they hit you over and over?
  38. The thing about early meat (and the reason why I skip so many splits) is that you would have to empty your inventory of the item by giving it to the chef earlier than intended. On the way, you might as well buy the Sandwich as well, and give it to the hungry guard at Great Walls when you first get there. This throws the route a bit out of whack, but it doesn't waste any time from what I can tell.
  39.
  40. Q: Is there a guide for this?
  41. A: I normally have two varieties of the 100% route (detailed and condensed), but this time, I only have a set of notes that I use to make sure that everything has been accounted for.

  43.
  44. Q: How do you record footage of a web game?
  45. A: I use OBS. It's a free and easy download at https://obsproject.com/
  46.
  47. Q: What split program do you use?
  48. A: I use Llanfair because I am on OS X. This program can be downloaded at http://jenmaarai.com/llanfair/en/
  49. To be honest, I never knew how to set it up until I realized that you need a second mouse button.
  50.
  51. Q: What's that keyboard viewer?
  52. A: It's a Mac thing. I don't know if there are any counterparts for other operating systems.
  53.
  54. Q: Lag spikes?
  55. A: It's a Flash game. Nothing I can do about it. Can't download an external SWF because the game has an internal countermeasure against accessing it from an unauthorized source.
  56.
  57. Q: Why is the audio quality so bad?
  58. A: I couldn't be bothered to set up a program for capturing computer audio (El Capitan makes it impossible to set up WavTap, and Soundflower seems too complicated for me to deal with), so I just decided to stick with external audio.
  59.
  60. Q: What is a Javelin Bomb Jump?
  61. A: It's a trick where you just stand on a Javelin, place a Bomb, and quickly jump and throw the Javelin to boost onto the newly thrown Javelin and gain a little height. This trick is definitely not worth the trouble, I can assure you of that. The timing is ridiculous, and failing it costs time and health, which makes it quite risky. The most notable application for this trick is in Forgotten Forest, where you can skip one of the key doors, as demonstrated in my Forgotten Forest 100% segment video. (https://youtu.be/HuJOc5yglcM)
