  1. So, after seeing episode 1x09 of Legend of Korra, and without knowing what happens in the final episodes, here's a couple of ideas on how Korra could be rewritten. I thought this crap up while typing, and it's not a comprehensive list or a complete script or anything. Just some random thoughts.
  2.
  3. ---------------------------
  4.
  5. -When Korra's in the Republic City park, she doesn't meet the apparently-irrelevant bush guy; she meets Bolin instead. Bolin turns out to be a homeless street kid, and Korra feels upset about this. They escape the police together and get into troubles. By the end of the episode, Bolin and Korra appeal to Tenzin and ask him to let Korra stay. Korra's excited about making a friend who's about her age, and she wants Bolin to help her learn about Republic City's social problems. They manage to convince Tenzin.
  6.
  7. -Bolin introduces Korra to Mako. She gets a crush on Mako right off the bat, but Mako's a little uncomfortable and unkind around her. Mako and Bolin still have major money problems and they're working for the Triple Threat Triad every now and then so they're able to live. Because of that, Mako's too busy to think about romantic possibilities; he's worried that Korra's gonna rat them out or unleash some kind of avatar vengeance on them once she realizes they're criminals.
  8.
  9. -Tahno's working for the Red Monsoon Triad instead of being a pro-bender. He's still the same smug asshole. In a confrontation between Tahno and the brothers, Korra learns about the brothers working for the triads. Korra's shocked, hurt and conflicted; how could her friends be working for criminals? She learns that the world isn't black and white, and sometimes good people do bad things. She decides to try and help Mako & Bolin to get out of the gangs.
  10.
  11. -Bolin and some other triad members get kidnapped by the equalists. After that night, Korra manages to convince the brothers that this line of work is dangerous and if they continue working for criminals, it's only gonna bite them in the ass again. They leave the triads for good. Korra is the avatar and Tenzin's in the council; they should have enough connections to get the brothers actual jobs. (If we really have to squeeze a little bit of pro-bending in: maybe the brothers could get jobs as security guys at the pro-bending arena, and that's how the Krew were around to see Amon's public attack and speech. They wouldn't be playing, they'd just be sitting in the audience, and the game between random minor characters wouldn't matter. We'd still get pro-bending, but we'd get as little of it as possible.)
  12.
  13. -Since Korra saved Bolin from the equalists, Amon & co. assume that Korra sympathises with the triads. They think Korra's just a big bully who supports the bending establishment. Any time that Korra uses some kind of force, they take it and twist it around to sound bad in their propaganda. Like Tarrlok's task force thing; there should be some public backlash against Korra's involvement in that raid.
  14.
  15. -Make it relevant that Mako and Bolin's parents were killed by a bender, and do something with that orphan background of theirs. Mako could hate firebending despite being a firebender himself, or he could even kinda sympathize with equalists and understand what they're saying. And is the scarf gonna get relevant in the final episodes, or why was it mentioned at all? Maybe there could be a scene where Mako would have to choose between the scarf and a friend, and he ends up losing the one link to his father? He has to finally let go of his grief and accept that his parents will live in his heart even though he has no physical memorabilia of them?
  16.
  17. -Mako, Korra and Bolin spend their sparetime together because they like one another. They are friends. They don't just team up for a sports event and that's all; they care for each other and want to have fun together. Maybe they could explore the city and learn more about people in it. Anything goes, as long as they're spending time together and the audience gets to see more of their character dynamics together.
  18.
  19. -The love triangle (if we seriously need one, and I don't think we do) could be between Mako/Korra/Bolin. Korra's uncertain about whether she wants the responsible mature guy, or the goofy, laid-back, fun guy. The brothers have their own internal conflict about whether bros come before hoes or not. The most important thing is to make the love triangle about the protagonist being conflicted about her feelings (which is relatable), rather than the protagonist trying to steal a guy who's already taken (which is unsympathetic).
  20. Korra knows right off the bat that she wants Mako, but initially Mako's being evasive and cranky to her because he's trying to hide the whole triad thing. Korra's feelings go unrequited for a while and she thinks Mako's unattainable, so she wonders if she should go for Bolin instead.
  21. Once the triad stuff gets resolved and Mako has no reason to feel tense about it, he starts to appreciate the fact that Korra's a pretty normal and approachable person despite being the avatar. And even if she's immature and reckless, she's trying to do good. So, he slowly comes to view Korra as a possible love interest.
  22. However! There's still a huge danger to make one or more of the characters look bad in a love triangle situation, and it should be written with caution. I'm still not sure how to get through it without hurting the feelings of the guy who doesn't get the girl.
  23.
  24. -Remove the scene where Pema tells Korra to make a move on a guy who's in a relationship. It's horrible advice and makes Pema look bad.
  25.
  26. -While I'm talking about Pema, the scene where she was telling about how she wants her baby to be a non-bender was good. Make more scenes like that; tiny little things establishing that non-benders feel some grudge. Scenes showing that in their opinion, the benders don't fully understand their problems or their POV. For example, when Bolin's talking about how scary it would be to have your bending taken away, make Pema overhear the discussion. She tries to comfort Bolin like "aww, it's not _that_ bad to live as a non-bender, you'd get used to it", and then Bolin goes like "but bending is a part of me, I'd feel like a cripple if I had to live without it", and Pema gets offended like "so you think non-benders are crippled?". Make someone defend the equalists with the argument "but they're not killing anyone, they're only taking your bending away, that's actually really humane".
  27.
  28. -Flesh out the council. Make it more obvious that they're corrupted, reactionary people, and as benders, they don't truly understand non-bender problems. Give them some lines of dialogue to show that they're bigoted idiots, and that's why they go for Tarrlok's ideas.
  29.
  30. -The "firebenders killed my parents" story got old a long time ago. If the remaining episodes don't reveal that there's a connection between the different incidents, and if it's just a coincidence that it's always a firebender, remove some of these stories. Replace some death stories with triad attacks or homicidal earth/waterbenders.
  31.
  32. -Asami's character needs to be fixed, and there are two ways. One of them is that she's removed completely from the story. Deleted, taken out, gone. She has no flaws and nothing interesting about her; she's really bland, and her only function is to make the love triangle happen. But unfortunately the love triangle is making both Korra and Mako looking like bad, insensitive people. And that's a terrible thing, because the audience is supposed to sympathise with Mako and Korra.
  33. So yeah, take out Asami, which also solves the love triangle problem. That, or...
  34.
  35. -...completely rewrite Asami's character and all of her actions. My suggestion? Make her a rich, snooty bitch. She's a pampered beautiful daddy's girl who always gets what she wants, and she's out to have fun, seduce guys and get some dick. She meets Korra, Mako and Bolin in Tarrlok's party. When she realizes that Korra's interested in Mako, she decides to start making moves on Mako even though she doesn't love him; she just wants to make Korra unhappy and show she's the alpha female here. She thinks it would be an amusing accomplishment to steal the avatar's love interest. She starts hanging out with the Krew and keeps saying nasty, snippy stuff to Korra whenever Mako or Bolin isn't around to hear it. Show that she's not the right person for Mako. Show also that Mako feels a slight temptation because Asami has money, but then he feels guilty about desiring Asami for such a material reason.
  36. Asami could also be really ambiguous whenever the Krew discuss the whole equalist vs. bender thing. She'd just enjoy being contrary and passive-aggressive during the debates, and Korra would wonder if she might be an equalist. But when the time comes, she chooses her friends over her father anyway. Make Hiroshi imply that he has such personal hatred for benders that he's gonna kill that street rat Mako. This would make Asami realise that even if she might be nasty and even if she doesn't love Mako, she's not evil and can't support someone who's ready to kill. So she turns on her father and feels terrible about it, but the Krew help her deal with it. She mellows out a little and manages to gain friendly relations with Korra.
  37.
  38. -I'm a sucker for redemption stories, so Tahno could also join the Krew after he's lost his bending. If the snooty version of Asami is around instead of being removed from the story, she could keep teasing Tahno and referring to him as a non-bender, and Tahno would get all offended about it. But then they could kinda start liking one another and start a fabulous, snooty romance together.
  39. Bleh, probably not a good idea. Might be better if either Tahno or my fanfiction version of Asami were Krew, but not both. A little too many "former antagonist who turned into a friend" characters, what with Lin being around as well.
  40.
  41. -Tenzin with his family and Lin are just fine. I have no suggestions on how to improve them, apart from the stuff I mentioned about Pema. Make it so that Lin and Tenzin broke up first, and only after that, Pema had the courage to make a move on Tenzin.
  42.
  43. -Tarrlok's alright too, but keep him as a threat for a much longer time.
  44.
  45. -Right now when I'm typing this, we don't know yet how on earth Amon was able to fight through bloodbending and who exactly he is. It's possible that we'll be getting some kind of explanation that will blow everyone's mind and turn out to be really awesome.
  46. ...but when everyone thought that Amon was be a fairly normal human and he'd be affected by such things like bloodbending, some people suggested that the story should go for a Tarrlok vs. Amon vs. Korra showdown. And possibly, Tarrlok might be too major threat for Korra to fight on her own, and she would need help from Amon/equalists. I loved that idea. It would have been nice for Amon and Korra to team up and fight against the biggest bad, and maybe learn more about one another during the team-up. Amon could learn that Korra tries her best and has good intentions, and Korra could learn that equalists had some points. They could find some kind of compromise in the aftermath of the final fight.
  47.
  48. -AtLA had the forest spirit Hei-Bai attacking people because the forest was destroyed. How are the spirits feeling about Republic City and industrialism? There's not much nature around... are the spirits really upset about the avatar's work, and do they think there's no balance in the city? A little more spiritual stuff would be nice. Chakras, Spirit World, anything? Even better if it tied into the conflict with Amon, and if Korra and him could find some common ground in the spiritual stuff.
  49.
  50. ---------------------------
  51.
  52. There's a lot more things that need to be rewritten (many of the actions of the council and the police force are really awkward), but I tried to get the most obvious issues out of the way. And I mostly tried to focus on characterization problems rather than plot problems, because the audience needs to care about the characters and their struggles. The series needs to establish that the Krew are friends who stick together, and they wouldn't throw their friendship away the minute they get into a quarrel. Currently, I'm not getting that feeling from the series. It feels like they're probably not gonna be friends in two or three years.
