  7. Independent Speaking - First two speaking tasks
  8. 1 open-ended
  9. 2 choice question
  10. preparation: 15 seconds (plus about another 15 while you hear the question and the timing instructions)
  11. speaking: 45 seconds
  12. ---
  13. “Choose a place you go to often that is important to you, and explain why it is important. Please include specific details in your explanation.”
  14. ---
  15. - The name of your answer (book, movie, photograph, person, city, etc.) doesn’t have to be real or English.
  16. - You can choose generic reasons for liking something even if they’re not true of the answer you picked.
  17. person: kind, understanding, good advice (best friend, favorite teacher, person you admire, etc.)
  18. book/movie: interesting fictional world, really believable characters, style is easy to understand
  19. (It could be the first book or movie you understood completely in English.)
  20. place: nice scenery, comfortable, relaxing, good for people-watching, food
  21. ---
  22. You can search for “would you rather questions” to get many ideas for the choice question tasks (speaking and writing).

  25. Mini-outline:
  26. answer
  27. - reason 1
  28. - reason 2
  29. ---
  30. Take 4 minutes to write a mini-outline for questions 2-9 on p. 193-195 (speaking task 1)
  31. Do the same for the choice questions.
  32. ---
  33. Remember that when you give your response, you’ll want to add an example or some details to explain why that reason supports your choice. (Why does being traditional Greek food make gyros your favorite food?)
  34. ---
  35. BREAK
  36. ---
  37. Remember that your full response can be organized like this:
  38. 1 Introduction: state your answer and briefly describe it (if necessary)
  39. 2 Lead-in: “I have two reasons for my opinion.”
  40. 3 First reason: “First, it is a typical Greek food.”
  41. 4 Detail/example: “My family is Greek and gyros…”
  42. 5 Second reason: “Second, it combines all my favorite flavors together.”
  43. 6 Detail/example: “I love lamb and tzatziki…”
  44. (7 Conclusion - if you have time)
  45. - One or both reasons for your choice in task 2 can be disadvantages of the other option.
  46. ---
  47. Record your responses to ETS 2.4 and 2.5 independent speaking.
  48. ---
