  1. roksprok: so i assume you have a bit of knowledge about research companies and stuff
  2. [3:55pm] roksprok: so i was wondering what you thought of this model
  3. [3:56pm] roksprok: a nonprofit that spun off for-profit startups
  4. [3:56pm] roksprok: as in - the nonprofit would apply for grants, do research as cheaply as possible
  5. [3:57pm] roksprok: and to move things to commercial dev set up a llc, that the nonprofit owns say 80 percent of
  6. [3:57pm] roksprok: the llc hires a few people from the non-profit
  7. [3:58pm] roksprok: and proceeds to try to make money off the tech
  8. [3:58pm] roksprok: the idea would be to combine best parts of non-profit and for-profit orgs
  9. [3:58pm] roksprok: s/idea/goal
  10. [3:59pm] roksprok: and there would be some global collaboration too
  11. [4:00pm] roksprok: ie the nonprofit would own say a bunch of microscopes
  12. [4:00pm] roksprok: that could be rented/used by the for-profits
  13. [4:00pm] roksprok: so the for-profits could save money and stuff
  14. [4:01pm] roksprok: and you wouldn't have the dumb cycle of 'biotech company starts up, spends millions on lab space and equipment, goes out of business and trashes/sells the equipment for pennies on the dollar'
  15. [4:04pm] roksprok: another dumb cycle you'd avoid is 'tech company starts, hires people, people do stuff, company goes out of business, people all run off to get other jobs, everything done is lost when the hard drives are shredded'
  16. [4:07pm] roksprok: thoughts?
