  1. Bully-Free Guide to Kantai Collection for New Players
  2.
  3. The purpose of this guide is to get new players up to speed as fast as possible. The guide should give you enough general direction and advice to clear up through world 3. From there you can follow other event preparation guides or work things out yourself.

  22. Part 1 - What to do first
  23.
  24.
  25. Section A - Unlocking Fleets
  26.
  27. The most important goal for a new player is to unlock all 4 fleets. Every minute you spend without them is potential resources that you aren't getting. To unlock all your fleets you need to clear quests A4, A14, and A16. This requires collecting all the Sendai, Myoko, and Kongo class ships. All of the Sendai class ships can be obtained from world 1 maps. You can also try to build her with 250/30/200/30 construction. Myoko class don't drop until 1-4, but becomes common starting in world 2. Kongo class drops from boss nodes in world 2 and commonly in world 3. Because the ships you need are easier to find in later maps it's a good idea to progress as far as you think you can, but your priority should be unlocking your fleets as soon as possible.
  28.
  29.
  30. Section B - Clearing Maps
  31.
  32. The second most important goal for a new player is clearing worlds so you can unlock EO maps to get medals for blueprints. Try to get through at least world 3 in your first few weeks of playing.
  33.
  34. *World 1
  35.
  36. 1-1 though 1-3 should be beatable with whatever you have at that point. Only go to night battle for the boss node and make sure all your ships are set up for double attack. For 1-4 you may want to bring a carrier. The best way to get one is with 300/30/400/300 construction. Even if you don't get a carrier, Chiyoda or Chitose can be remodeled into one at level 15. You can then do quests A11 and B10 to get Akagi. 1-5 is easy as long as you have anti-sub equipment. Make enough sonar and depth charges for 2-3 ships and bring a light carrier with bombers and a Saiun if you have one. Anti-sub attack power is increased if you have both sonar and a depth charge equipped.
  37.
  38. *World 2
  39.
  40. For world 2 you should try to get some heavy cruisers. If you're having a hard time clearing 2-4 you may want to get at least one battleship. If you can't get a battleship to drop you can try to build one with 400/100/600/30 construction. Modernize all your ships and remodel the ones you can. If your levels are too low you can easily train your ships at 1-5. The easiest way to beat 2-5 is taking the middle route using 3 light carriers. Check your LoS using this website or the "33" number in most viewers:

  43.
  44.
  45. *World 3
  46.
  47. 3-2 is another good place to level your ships. Use your best destroyers to beat the map. If you're having trouble you can try sparkling your fleet. For 3-4 bring your strongest ships and give up if you're sent A>B since you will reach the boss with no ammo. For 3-5 if you don't have good planes it's better to go south with 1 light cruiser and 5 destroyers. You can also try using 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyers, and a seaplane tender. If you can't get through you can try sparkling your ships.
  48.
  49.
  50.
  51. Part 2 - Getting Ships and Equipment
  52.
  53. Once you've started making good progress at clearing maps your main focus should be getting enough good ships and equipment so you can do events. There are other guides that will tell you which ships are the best so this is only a brief overview.
  54.
  55.
  56. Section A - Ships
  57.
  58. For normal maps you shouldn't need more than 5 destroyers, 2 light cruisers, 3-4 heavy cruisers, 4 battleships, 2-3 carriers, 1 seaplane tender, and 3 submarines. For events you need 2-3 times as many for shiplocking and support fleets. You also need at least 12 destroyers for expeditions. Keep in mind that many quests require specific ships, so be careful before you scrap something you think you don't need.
  59.
  60. *Akashi
  61.
  62. The most important ship to get is Akashi. She lets you repair ships without using your docks and you need her to upgrade equipment. Every day without her is a screw you're missing out on from the daily upgrade quest. She drops from the boss node of 1-5 and 2-5 so it may be worth trying to farm her even after you got the medal.
  63.
  64. *Oyodo
  65.
  66. Oyodo drops very rarely from 1-6. She comes with equipment that's very helpful for events. The easiest way to get her is from event maps, but dhe doesn't always drop. Don't neglect to do 1-6 even though it doesn't give a medal and you might get lucky.
  67.
  68.
  69. *Daily Construction
  70.
  71. Once you have all the ships you need for unlocking your fleets, you can try to build whatever else you need. Getting at least one carrier early on can be helpful. If you're low on resources 30/30/30/30 4 times will give you back more than you spent.
  72.
  73.
  74. *Remodelling and Modernization
  75.
  76. Unless you're grinding a ship to remodel level all in one go you should remodel your ships as soon as possible. Remodelling is especially important for light carriers that start with only 3 slots. Try to modernize any ship you want to sortie. You will get plenty of extra ships to use for modernization while you're levelling so don't worry that you might run out.
  77.
  78.
  79. Section B - Equipment
  80.
  81. Only basic equipment can be made with development. The best equipment must be taken from remodeled ships or upgraded with Akashi.
  82.
  83. *Development
  84.
  85. The first thing you want to make is sonar and depth charges. Use 10/10/10/20 or 10/30/10/10 with destroyer flagship. You want around 6 sonars and 3 depth charges.
  86.
  87. The second most important thing to make is planes. Try to get a minimum of 6 Reppus or Shiden Kai 2s and 8-10 Ryusei or Ryusei Kais. Keep any Suisei 12As you get too. You also want around 6-8 Zuiuns and at least 1 Saiun. Use 20/60/10/110 with carrier flagship until you have enough Saiuns and then you can switch to 20/60/10/100.
  88.
  89. If your ships are high enough level to do expeditions 37 and 38 but you don't have enough drums, it may be worth crafting them. 10/10/11/10 with submarine flagship is a cheap way to make them.
  90.
  91. Next you should make at least 3 green shells and 3-4 red shells. Use 10/90/90/30 with battleship flagship.
  92.
  93. After that either try to make more planes or go for radar using 20/20/250/250 with carrier flagship.
  94.
  95. *Stealing Equipment
  96.
  97. You can get Quintuple Torpedo launchers from remodeled Kitakami and Ooi. Remodeled Myoko class have 20.3(2) guns. Mikuma and Kinugasa have 20.3(3) guns. Hiryu and Soryu have good planes. Sendai K2 has all of the night battle equips.
  98.
  99. *Upgrading Equipment
  100.
  101. Don't forget to do your daily upgrade quest. If you don't know what to upgrade consider upgrading Type 91 Shells to +6. You could also upgrade your daihatsu landing craft if you have any. A seaplane fighter is a valuable investment and you should try to get at least 2. Some upgrades consume equipment so make sure you have enough before you start. It is advisable to use the slider for guaranteed success for any upgrade beyond +6.
  102.
  103.
  104.
  105. Part 3 - What else to do
  106.
  107.
  108. Section A - Quests
  109.
  110. *One Time Quests
  111.
  112. After you unlock all 4 fleets you should try to do quests that give rare equipment as rewards. The most important ones are the plane conversion and catapult quests. For Tomonaga and Egusa conversion series you need to clear A10, A28, and A36. For Murata conversion and the first catapult, you need all the ships for quests A20, A21, A22, A23, A25, A29, A30, A31, and A56. For the second catapult you need A59, A60, and A61. For Iwamoto and Iwai you also need to clear Bm6. Quests B31 and B32 give Type 1 shells. Quest B62 gives a Daihatsu and F33 gives a Type 2 Tank. Quests B33, B63, and B65 give medals. You need 4 submarines for quest D8 to unlock Bismarck construction. Quest D18 lets you have 6 active quests.
  113.
  114. *Repeatable Quests
  115.
  116. Bd2, Bd4, Bd5, E3, F6, and F9 all give buckets and should be done every day. Bw5, Bw7, C4, and D11 give screws and should be done every week. Bw10, Bm4, Bm6, and Bm7 also give screws but are annoying to complete. F12 should be done every week to get barrels for expeditions and transport maps. When doing the PvP daily quests do the 3 hardest looking fights first since you don't need to win them for the first quest.
  117.
  118.
  119. Section B - Leveling
  120.
  121. For a new player the best places to level are PvP, 1-5, and 3-2.
  122.
  123. *PvP
  124.
  125. Do it every day, even if you don't think you can win. Matches reset twice a day so you can do up to 10 fights. Don't bring carriers with bombers unless you want to lose tons of bauxite.
  126.
  127. *1-5
  128.
  129. Enemies can't hurt you at all before HQ level 40 and are still unlikely to damage you until HQ level 80. Bring enough ships to reliably sink 3 subs and go home after the 3rd node. This is a good place to train multiple destroyers up to level 40-50. With Isuzu K2 or a ship with over 100 anti-sub power the map is even easier.
  130.
  131. *3-2
  132.
  133. Bring a submarine, a battleship, and a carrier. If you can reliably kill at least 4 enemies before shelling starts you can keep going even with red morale. You can easily get over 10000 exp per hour for your flagship and 3800 for everything else. Be aware of resource consumption though. You can try it without a submarine but you will have to repair more often. This is a good place to get ships up to level 60-70.
  134.
  135.
  136. Section C - Expeditions
  137.
  138. The best expedition for buckets is 2. The best for resources is 5. If you need a lot of fuel and ammo for sorties do 21 with your 4th fleet. If you need a lot of steel for LSC do 38. The best way to get bauxite is to do 11, 24, and 36 while you're asleep. Expedition 21 requires 3 drums and has increased chance for great success with 5. Expeditions 37 and 38 require 8 drums and have increased chance for great success with 9.
  139.
  140.
  141.
  142. Part 4 - Bully-Free Question Zone
  143.
  144. Q: How do I equip my ships?
  145.
  146. A: In almost all situations you want a setup that allows you to double attack. Battleships and cruisers should be equipped with exactly 2 main guns and a seaplane. For battleships the 4th equip should almost always be an AP shell. Destroyers should have exactly 2 main guns and no torpedo. For carriers start filling the smallest slots with fighters until you have enough air power for the map and then put your best bombers in the remaining bigger slots.
  147.
  148. Q: Why don't my carriers do anything?
  149.
  150. A: Either you don't have enough fighters and your bombers are all getting shot down, or you're using shitty planes and need to get better ones. Whenever possible you should put a bomber in your first equipment slot for increased critical hit chance. Normally blue planes are better than red ones given similar bombing stats.
  151.
  152. Q: What is ship locking?
  153.
  154. A: Sometimes events lock the ships you use to certain maps. For example if you use Abukuma for E1 you can't use her for E2 or E3. This doesn't apply to easy mode, but if you switch to medium or hard later on the ships you already used will still be locked.
  155.
  156. Q: What formation do I use?
  157.
  158. A: For surface battle you should almost always use line ahead. If there are 5 enemy ships and 1 sub and you need S rank use double line. If you're facing all subs use line abreast. Only use diamond on air raid nodes.
  159.
  160. Q: What order do I put my ships in?
  161.
  162. A: Generally carriers should always be at the bottom since they don't attack at night. The exception to this is if you don't plan on going to night battle and want them to attack first in second shelling round. If you have a ship that keeps getting blown up on the way to the boss you can make it flagship for added safety. Flagship also increases cut in chance at night so you may want to put a ship with that set up there. If you have a ship with a searchlight you should put it closer to the top of your list so it will have a higher chance of getting to attack before being blown up. If you're facing an installation boss you may want to put your anti-installation ships at the bottom so they have a higher chance of targeting the boss.
