i think the moment you should realize that youre being over-protective/white-knight is the moment when you say "they wont do/say something about it themselves because thats just how they are, so im gonna say/do something about it for them"  If its really that important, they will do something about it themselves.  Or at least if you really want to help, facilitate them doing something about it, dont just do it for them.  Tell them that they should say/do something about it.  They shouldnt rely on you for everything.

And if you are manipulating them into relying on you then you are the actual shittiest type of person on the planet.

Something about giving a man a fishing pole instead of giving him the fish.
