91.
A few questions about reading…

 92.
 93.
Frankie (4) is following an online phonics programme at Reading Eggs. She loves it, and I’m noticing her sounding out words and she’s loving that she can read!!

 94.
We don’t have many reading books that she can read from (as opposed to stoies that I read to her), and the ones that she does have she knows off by heart. Amy I right in thinking it is ok to kepp reading from these books with her? We tend to read them at bedtime, and she recites the words as I read them out loud.

 95.
She likes to talk about the pictures too, telling me about details that aren’t in the words. I love this, especially as she has stuggled with describing things in the past. Is this something I should encourage?

 96.
Finally, Ava (22 months) picked up a number card this morning with ’20′ on it. She ‘read’ it as the sounds for ‘s’ and ‘o’. Is she too young for some instruction? I don’t mean formal lessons, but more pointing out the sounds and words as we see things…

 123.
So here it is, the first passworded post. I’ve been having an awful lot of trouble with my 16 yo daughter, which as escalated over the last weekend. This post isn’t about her though, it’s about my mum. Or rather, about the feelings she generates in me.

 124.
I asked my mum if my daughter could stay with her for a few days, to give us all a break. She said no, and told us she was coming to stay here for a few days instead. TOLD us, not requested, or suggested. She’s coming on Monday. She will expect the place to be spotless. She will moan about everything, from the mess and the dirt (we’renot tidy people, but we don’t live in squalor. It’s just she’s a clean freak who follows my kids around with a dustpan and brush when we visit her), to how we (don’t) discipline the children, to our (lack of) routine, to the way we home educate (ie not school), to the (cheap) food we eat and so on.

 125.
Her idea is that she will see the kids in their own territory and can then advise me on how best to deal with them. I don’t want advice from her, I wanted a break. She couldn’t cope with me as a teen, and she put me into care. Her previous advice has mainly been to send the kids back to school.

 126.
 127.
I don’t know what to do. My house isn’t tidy enough, will never be tidy enough, but I can’t contemplate how bad she would be if I just thought ‘sod it’ and left it. Nothing I ever do is good enough. She never managed to raise 6 children, or see them though the teenage years, yet she feels qualified to tell me what I’m doing wrong as a wife, mother and housewife?

 128.
I don’t have the mental strength to say no to her. What the fuck am I going to do?

 176.
So, a very interesting conversation taking place on twitter this morning, prompted by this news story. The general opinion (which I agree with) was that phonics is not the be all and end all of learning to read, and should be the sole basis of judging how well a child can read.Along with all my thoughts about AE, Merry mentioned how one of her daughters prefers AE, while the others get on better with schemes. I asked her how this worked for her, and her reply echoed closely my conflict with going for AE fully.I know that left to his own devices, M would play on the computer or DS all.day.long. It would be army games, or Shift, or Dr Who games. I know he will get extremely irritated to be asked to come off the pc for someone else’s go, he will shout and kick out. I also know that he hates ‘school’ work.I also think that in a family, everyone needs to work together, that no one persons needs/wants should outweigh another’s. M has a deep desire to play games on the computer. I have a deep desire to see him have some purposeful or meaningful play. I know there are some that will say playing shoot-em-up games all day long has a purpose, but I only see that it makes him very aggessive and the whole family suffers. So embracing unschooling wholeheartedly is not something I feel I can do. My thoughts at the moment are to spend mornings with him doing child-led, but ‘approved’ things (maybe putting a range of choices on the table and doing what he chooses), before letting him do pc/whatever after lunch. I think this may be a good compromise while we feel our way around unschooling/consensual parenting.

 200.
I’ve been thinking. Yes, this is usually dangerous. Thoughts about autonomous ed or unschooling have been pretty much dominating my mind over the past couple of days. I’ve been talking on twitter and facebook. I’ve been reading so so much, mainly from Sandra Dodd’s website Radical Unschooling, which is a veritable goldmine of articles and thoughts. I did a blog search on unschooling. I joined a couple of email lists and have started reading through the archives. And I’ve been thinking.I’ve thought about how my whole life needs to change, not just ‘education’. I’ve realised how I have a deep longing for control, but actually letting go might just be the best way to get it. I’m nowhere near brave enough to embrace unschooling as a complete life philosophy, but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing, there isn’t an exam or test to pass. If I really want things to change, only I have the power to do it. No-one is going to change for me, but by changing how I react to things, how I interact with the most important people in my life, determines how they react and interact with me. If they change, they will. It all starts and ends with me.It’s not going to be easy. Actually it’s worse than that. It’s going to be bloody difficult. I’m very ingrained in negative behaviour, shouting, losing my temper, being lazy, selfish and a complete control freak. But I owe to my children, and myself, not to remain in this mindset, to move towards a more satisfying life, and to open those doors of opportunity to my children. They deserve better than they are getting right now.So, I’m going to try to move forward, being the person I wish I was, in the hope that I will become that person. And also hoping that everyone else will move along the path with me. I don’t know how I will handle setbacks and resistance, even though I know it will happen. In the meantime, the children have done maths, science, writing, playing, planning an talking, all without me telling them to!!

 224.
For most of us, it was maths day. We were hoping it would be science day, but as I write, the science book we are waiting for still hasn’t arrived. After lunch we all played dominoes. After Matthew won, he had fun standing them all up and knocking them down like, well, dominoes! I left them to play by themselves while I twittered, and when I looked up, Charlei was doing her English, Kianna had pulled out her maths and Matthew had got the balance scale out and was comparing weights of shapes, block and teddy bear counters! He discovered that 23 teddy bears weigh more than 20 teddy bears. Charlei went upstairs to do her writing, Matthew decided to play on the computer, and Kianna and I settled down to work on fractions. She’s struggling with this, so we’re looking at different ways of representing them instead of just the dry numbers on a page. I think maybe tomorrow I’ll get the playdoh out to help with lowest common denominator. This is the beauty of home ed: she always felt left behind in school, the teacher not having enough time or patience to explain concepts till Kianna understood them; at home we can take as long as we want!I think I’m slowly getting persuaded by the arguments for autonomous education. Just before lunch I mentioned we would be doing maths this afternoon. This produced a spectacular meltdown from Matthew, and I realised he really does not like the idea of ’lessons’ at all. This of course leads naturally into AE, which terrifies the hell out of me, because I don’t know how to do it!! I know of course that it isn’t me ‘doing it’, but I have a big conflict between me needing to see their learning in a concrete way, and allowing the children to determine their own path. I’m sure the two aren’t mutually exclusive, so I’ll be reading lots of blogs and websites to steal get ideas on how AE is done! But I worry about ‘evidence’, not for me, but for others, such as the family and the LA. I know I could say ‘screw them’, but it isn’t as easy as that for me. I know they would be happy if we were doing school at home, with tests at home, and actually I would be happy with that too, but the children aren’t happy with that! I can see with Frankie and Ava that AE works, they haven’t been tainted by school and it’s amazing how they absorb things. I’m not worried about Charlei, she has her unconditional offer for college and if she chooses not to study for her IGCSEs it’s not the end of the world. I do worry about Kianna and Matthew though. Kianna left school thinking she was stupid. She really isn’t, but she struggles with workbooks aimed at her age. So in her mind, she must be thick. Matthew just thinks education is a dirty word. I wish I knew how to AE…

 274.
Me:I’m not doing so well, by my standards. By now I should have been a domestic goddess, a brilliant teacher, a fantastic economist. Back at the beginning of the year, I posted my things to do. Here’s how I did.1. Stick to my budget. This went horribly, horrifically wrong. I’ve had unexpected bills, plus birthdays and course to pay for. I’m worse debt than ever, and have no idea how I’m going to handle it. I am going to bury my head in the sand till after C’s birthday on the 21st. Then I’ll work something out. In the meantime I’m trying to sell off my pendants, some books and yarn, PM me if interested!0/102. Organise my paperwork. Actually, this one hasn’t been so bad. I have trashed about half of the papers I had, and filed about half of what was left. I only have about 1 box left. I’ve been putting appointments in my iphone, and haven’t missed one!6/103. Get into a routine. Again, not so good. In fact this was bloody awful. No routine, just as much chaos. BUT, I did realise that half the problem was how my living room was arranged, so the last few days we have been moving furniture, books and toys into places that are much more convenient and efficient. It’s not finished yet, but it’s already much better.4/104. Look after myself. No comment.1/10I’m not setting new targets for February or March, I’m going to try to keep working on these ones.Overall it’s 3/10 for JanuaryCharlotte:Charlotte finally (after the longest 2.5 weeks ever) got her letter from college. She was given an unconditional offer for the professional chef diploma course!! We are still buzzing!! She immediately dropped 4 of the 9 IGCSE’s she was studying for! She’s keeping up with 5, as a back up, but knowing her offer was unconditional means she can now study for pleasure. She’s also started a 10 week Saturday course (Junior Chef Academy) at the same college, taught by the same team. She is in her element, absolutely loves it!! She looks great in her chef’s whites, and seeing her so happy makes it worth the money I’ve paid for the course! She also, finally, got the diagnosis of hypothyroidism from the paediatrician. We’ve suspected this for a while, and now she is taking tablets. Hopefully we’ll see a reduction in her symptoms very soon.Kianna:Kianna is doing a lot of work with Time4Learning without being prompted, which is very pleasing. She’s also started talking about doing some written work too, but I’m not pushing. She’s showing interest in doing the IGCSE course that C has dropped, but just taking longer (2.5 years) to do it. We’ll see. She’s still not keen on social activities without me, which is fine. She’s having some trouble with mood swings, but they seem linked to her monthly cycle, so I’m just keeping an eye on that.Matthew:Matthew is still preferring to watch telly or play computer games. He stayed at his uncle’s house last week, and I realised he’s craving time out, so I’ve enrolled him in a drama class, and looking for scouts/swimming/football/something. He had his first drama class yesterday. He was reluctant to go in at first, but when I promised him I would wait, in he went. Within 5 minutes I heard him joining in the general chaos and I knew he’d be fine! He loved it! I phoned up about swimming classes, but there’s a waiting list to get on the waiting list. They said call back in April… It was pretty much the same story for scouts and football. If anyone has any other ideas for activities he could do, let me know! I’m going to try him with some lessons this week, hopefully he’ll be more receptive.Frankie:Frankie has been pootling along her own little way. It’s amazing to watch actually. Seeing how she does activities shows how autonomy can really work in education. She loves the computer, spending a lot of time on Reading Eggs, Cbeebies and Time4Learning. This week she started reading. Just small, 3 letter words, but definitely reading. At the same time she’s started showing awareness of her surroundings, asking about street signs and what they say. I thought her language therapy groups weren’t working, but they are. She’s expressing herself more clearly, and even her pronunciations (even though that’s not explicitly part of these sessions) are getting better too.I originally called this A Quick Catch-up, but it isn’t, is it? Well done if you’ve read this far!!!

 299.
A chance conversation on twitter the other night has really changed my perspective on things. A friend wondered if me or my children might have Aspergers or ADD, and noted that some of the things I talk about and do display some classic traits of the syndromes. Now, I am quite cynical of self-diagnosis of conditions, and I also hate labels, but something definitely clicked there. I’m not saying I have any of those conditions, and I’m not going to chase a diagnosis, but it’s helped me realise I’m not alone thinking the way I do, that it’s not bad to think the way I do, and maybe it’s time to stop resisting, trying to change, and actually go with the flow and accept that this is me, this is the way I am, and I’m not like everyone else but that’s not a a bad thing! And BOOM! Things I’d been wanting to do for ages but hadn’t got round to got done! My weekend was fantastically productive. Suddenly, list making has gotten much easier! My main acheivement of the weekend is this:
 300.
 301.

 302.

 303.

 304.
Lots of printing, cutting, laminating, velcro-ing, to make a daily board for the kids to use. I love it and so do they!

 305.
And finally, after the longest 2 weeks ever, C got her letter from the college she’d applied to do her professional chef diploma. This is the most sought after course of it’s kind in the country, and last year there were 3 applicants for every place, with more expected this year. Well, she was given an unconditional offer!!! She’s on her way to fulfilling her long-standing ambition to be a chef, and I couldn’t be more proud of her!!

 306.
Onwards and upwards (till the next setback )

 330.
One of the reasons I love the internet is the social networking I have been able to do. And, since coming back to home edding, making contacts (and friends) with other home edders has been brilliant. It has, however led to me doing a lot of questioning of the things I believe about (among other things) family life and education. Most of my conversations happen on twitter, but I also read a lot of blogs too. I have come to the conclusion that in an ideal world, my family philosophy would be gentle/consensual/attachment parenting, and we would autonomously educate. If only it were an ideal world!I just don’t know how to provide/facilitate learning opportunities for my children in an autonomous way. Left to make their own choices, it’s tv or pc games all day long. I really don’t want to impose structure on them, but can’t really see any other way I also am at a loss on how to deal with challenging/naughty behaviour in a gentle/consensual way. There are a lot of fights and arguments in this household, and nothing seems to work.I feel that I am at a crossroads, but all roads are blocked. I can’t seem to manage life the way I want to, and I don’t know what to do for the best.
