  9.
  10. Thank you for trying this special MicroXP edition of Windows XP.
  11.
  12. With a WINDOWS folder that is only 199Mb and a CD size of just 99.9Mb,
  13. this has to be one of the smallest Windows XP installations out there.
  14.
  15. Whats more - you can use 99% of the programs you always use and up to
  16. now there is not one single report of any game not working in MicroXP.
  17.
  18. This installation takes only 5 Minutes 30 seconds.
  19.
  20. This install includes default XP drivers for Ethernet/Sound/SCSI/RAID
  21.
  22. It has all languages kept, except Chinese/Japanese/Korean.
  23.
  24. It has all keyboard layout choices kept.
  25.
  26. It also has Service Pack 3 final slipstreamed into it.
  27.
  28. LAN Networking is now possible - Use 'Map Network Drive' and just put
  29. the computer name of the computer you want to network with.
  30.
  31. Digital Cameras and Scanners can also now be used.
  32.
  33. The ISO file size is the same as in the previous release - 99.9Mb
  34.

  100.
  101. [WHAT YOU CANNOT DO]
  102.
  103. This is a greatly reduced installation of Windows XP Professional SP3
  104.
  105. Please read these notes BEFORE using this edition of Windows:
  106.
  107. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  108.
  109. - SINGLE USER ONLY
  110.
  111. You cannot add any additional users. Do not try to add more users,
  112. otherwise your main account that is used by default (Administrator)
  113. will become the new account and after logging in, you will not have
  114. any desktop theme (not even Classic) and the whole account will be
  115. ruined. You'll probably have to install Windows again because if
  116. you make a new account it replaces Administrator and tries to
  117. log you in with Default User - the problem with this is - there
  118. is no Default User anymore.
  119.
  120. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  121.
  122. - NO NATIVE SUPPORT FOR FTP SITES
  123.
  124. There is no built in support for downloading from FTP sites,
  125. try using Filezilla or WS_FTP if you need to do that. Even just
  126. Opera or Firefox can probably do it. This functionality is gone
  127. because the Application Layer Gateway service is gone, along
  128. with ALG.EXE that normally runs in Task Manager, taking up about
  129. 6Mb RAM for what amounts to no reason.
  130.
  131. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  132.
  133. - NO VISITING WINDOWS UPDATE
  134.
  135. You cannot visit Windows Update with this version of Windows
  136. because Internet Explorer is removed. You can manually download
  137. updates from Microsoft and you can also use the alternative
  138. Windiz Update website through Opera or Firefox. Because so
  139. much has been removed from this edition of Windows, you are not
  140. likely to be any more safe installing updates for Windows.
  141. NOTE: Because this edition of Windows uses a patched
  142. winlogon.exe in order to remove the oembios.bin file,
  143. you really should not update Windows anyway, in case
  144. winlogon.exe gets replaced by an update. There are more
  145. details about this in the eXPerience folder on the desktop
  146. once MicroXP is installed.
  147.
  148. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  149.
  150. - NO FAST USER SWITCHING
  151.
  152. Apart from you only being able to have the one account anyway
  153. (Administrator) the ability to do Fast User Switching is also
  154. removed.
  155.
  156. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  157.
  158. - NO PASSWORD STORAGE/AUTOCOMPLETE
  159.
  160. Windows will not save stored passwords, however, this only really
  161. applied to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, which are removed.
  162. You will be fine using Firefox or Opera web browsers and Thunderbird
  163. email client for emails. Those are self contained programs and take
  164. care of storing your passwords by themselves.
  165.
  166. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  167.
  168. - NO CD-ROM AUTOPLAY
  169.
  170. When you insert a CD that would bring up a screen to install the
  171. program contained on the CD, this does not happen in this version
  172. of Windows, you will have to explore the CD manually and run
  173. whatever file it is that runs the program's setup, usually
  174. setup.exe on the root of the CD. If the CD has a file called
  175. AUTORUN.INF then open that file and look at which .exe file
  176. is listed in AUTORUN.INF
  177.
  178. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  179.
  180. - NO SMART CARD DETECTION
  181.
  182. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  183.
  184. - NO SCHEDULED TASKS
  185.
  186. You cannot set programs, like AntiVirus or Hard Disk Defrag programs
  187. to run in the future IF they need the Scheduled Tasks service in
  188. Windows. If you are going to run those types of programs you will
  189. have to manually scan or defrag whenever it is convenient. Despite
  190. this, one program that will schedule its operations is Perfectdisk
  191. defrag, you do not need Task Scheduler for this program to run a
  192. scheduled defrag.
  193.
  194. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  195.
  196. - NO REMOTE DESKTOP
  197.
  198. There is no Remote Desktop in this version of Windows
  199. because the Terminal Services service is removed.
  200.
  201. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  202.
  203. - NO THEMES
  204.
  205. You cannot have the Luna (Blue/Olive/Silver) desktop theme in this
  206. version of Windows, the only theme you can choose is Windows
  207. Classic which it is already set to by default. You can however
  208. install Windowblinds if you want to and it will work fine,
  209. Windowblinds does not rely on the Themes service. You could even
  210. make MicroXP look like Vista with the Ironjer AeroGlass The
  211. Remix V4. Use v4 not v5 of that if you use it.
  212.
  213. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  214.
  215. - NO UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY SERVICE
  216.
  217. I always thought UPS Service delivered parcels but apparently not,
  218. if you have this type of device then it will not work on this version
  219. of Windows. A UPS is only used for emergencies like if you have
  220. a power cut - thats if you even have such a device.
  221.
  222. _____________________________________________________________________
  223.
  224. [WHAT YOU CAN DO]
  225.
  226. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  227.
  228. - PROGRAMS -
  229.
  230. You can still install and run just about all the programs and games
  231. that you can run on a normal installation of XP. There is a text file
  232. in the eXPerience folder on the desktop that has a list of programs
  233. that work and includes some that don't work (not many). Even Office
  234. 2007 installs on this version of Windows
  235.
  236. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  237.
  238. - GAMES -
  239.
  240. Up to now, there has not been one single report of any game not
  241. working on MicroXP. Gaming is what this edition of Windows is all
  242. about, it gives better benchmarks than any other version of
  243. Windows I have ever tested.
  244.
  245. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  246.
  247. - LAN NETWORKING -
  248.
  249. At last - MicroXP now has the ability to browse your local network.
  250. All you need to know is the computer name of the computer you want
  251. to connect to and thats about it, just right click My Computer and
  252. choose Map Network Drive. All computers can see each other even
  253. if every computer in the network is running this MicroXP.
  254.
  255. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  256.
  257. - CAMERAS AND SCANNERS
  258.
  259. Now in MicroXP it is possible to use a digital camera (USB only,
  260. no Firewire) or a scanner. Tested and working with a Fuji FinePix
  261. 6MP camera. The Photo Printing Wizard is not included, neither
  262. is the wizard to download photos from the internet, but the rest
  263. of the functionality for cameras and scanners is as complete as
  264. in full Windows. My favourite saying: whats missing, you're not
  265. gonna miss! Print photos with Photoshop or maybe even Irfanview.
  266. Ctrl+P to print works in every single program that supports it,
  267. so its not like we ever needed the photo printing wizard, which
  268. only ever made all images I fed through it A4, even small images,
  269. so it actually did not even work, unless I skipped a button but
  270. there really are no buttons to skip in that wizard, its useless.
  271.
  272. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  273.
  274. - DIAL-UP CONNECTION -
  275.
  276. You can still use a Dial-Up connection (Broadband or old 56k modem).
  277. This is the one major flaw in other stripped out operating systems,
  278. a lot of UK users still use a modem with broadband... in this
  279. edition, RAS Dial-Up/PPPoE/DSL/ADSL connectivity is OK as well
  280. as old 56k modems. Yes, try this install on a Pentium II or even
  281. an old 486 might run it! They had 75Mhz processors and 8Mb RAM
  282. with 4Mb graphics cards.
  283.
  284. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  285.
  286. - WEB BROWSER -
  287.
  288. This installation already includes a basic web browser called
  289. Browzar that uses a few core files left from Internet
  290. Explorer. No, Internet Explorer is not included, but select
  291. files included in this installation that come from Internet
  292. Explorer are vital to running Windows. Its also Internet Explorer
  293. related files that allow you to open CHM files, which you can do
  294. in this edition of Windows. This Browzar web browser is only here
  295. so you can at least get online and download Firefox, Opera, Netscape
  296. or whatever browser you want. This not only saves space on this CD,
  297. but you get to choose what web browser you want to use and you get
  298. the latest version not an old and possibly insecure version. Flash
  299. v9.0.124.0 for Firefox and Opera is included, so Google Video and
  300. YouTube work straight away in whichever browser you install.
  301.
  302. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  303.
  304. - PASSES WGA CHECKS
  305.
  306. If you go to download for example, Windows Media Player 11 from
  307. Microsoft's downloads section, you will need to validate windows
  308. by running the GenuineCheck.exe file that Microsoft asks you to
  309. download as part of the Windows Genuine Advantage checks. Its
  310. fine to do this, don't be scared of your key being blacklisted.
  311.
  312. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  313.
  314. - WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11
  315.
  316. You can install Windows Media Player 11 in this edition of Windows.
  317. NOTE: Because the file WMPLOC.DLL is not in system32, Windows Media
  318. Player 11 will say that it could not complete setup or words to
  319. that effect. IGNORE THIS ERROR! Windows Media Player 11 is fully
  320. working after you install it and get that error, Windows Media
  321. Video type formats stream in Opera and Firefox still - so you can
  322. ignore that installation error. Just make sure if you install
  323. Windows Media Player 11 to have the Cryptographic Services
  324. service enabled. Windows Media Player 11 needs that service started
  325. to install. After installing Windows Media Player 11 you can then
  326. disable Cryptographic Services if you wish, like a lot of stuff
  327. in Windows, it doesn't really do anything important.
  328.
  329. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  330.
  331. - WMV STREAMS -
  332.
  333. Once you have installed Opera, Firefox, Netscape or the browser
  334. of your choice, as long as you install Windows Media Player 11,
  335. you can stream Windows Media Videos from websites like the BBC's
  336. News website, or anywhere that has WMV streams. This is possible
  337. because there are three DLL files added to the Windows Media
  338. Player folder in Program Files. Don't worry, theres no Windows
  339. Media Player there, it only contains the vital DLL files for
  340. streaming compatibility in Firefox and Opera if you install
  341. Windows Media Player 11. Note that you do need to install Windows
  342. Media Player 11 to view .WMV movies in web pages.
  343.
  344. * * * * * * * * * * * *
  345.
  346. - FLASH -
  347.
  348. If you install Opera or Firefox web browser(s) in this special
  349. MicroXP edition of Windows, you can go visit YouTube or Google
  350. Video without even having to install Flash Player. You can just
  351. watch the videos right away.
