  1. Unbeknownst to Masaomi Kida, Kanra had timed her appearance to meet him as he walked his daughter. He had not noticed her following them from the shadows like some predatory beast till she had pounced on them in the park. Immediately he had assumed her worst intentions because she wouldn't usually come and tease him without his friends around. But as it happened she was bored that day.
  2.
  3. It was Kanra had dragged her Masa-kun so deep into crime in the first place and now he cold never escape that life which had gotten out of hand. Without the Yellow Scarves he couldn't afford to care for a child at nearly 16 and begging a pittance from Kanra had been like getting blood out of a stone. Still he suspected - even knew - Kanra had deliberately brought what they had built together to disaster, out of envy, even having Saki's legs broken though the three of them had shared the sheets. Unforgivable.
  4.
  5. Masaomi had to return to her bed that one night against his better judgment, for her to agree to pay anything at all. She had dumped little Kanra on his parents in his own absence, to their surprise and to his. "You're not a kid anymore" he remembered she had purred that evening she took his virginity for her own reasons. As far as anyone else except Mikado knew, his little girl was really his adopted sister. No one had admitted to suspecting she was the older Kanra's daughter despite her looks, for the simple reason that she was never there. But he assumed there must have been talk. People must have seen his girlfriend was pregnant after he left, he figured, and some must have thought he dumped her for carrying his child.
  6.
  7. Kanra was the most extraordinary girl he had ever met, and yet what followed was as close to ordinary as he might hope.
  8.
  9. "If it hadn't been for you, she might not be here," she said distantly as she looked at what he had created. "When I thought of her as mine it would have been like killing a part of me." Truthfully it had been Shinra's words had that effect, before that she had of course wanted rid, like she did all her problems. Afterwards she had just followed her nature as she always did.
  10.
  11. "That's the only true kindness I've seen off of you" said Masaomi, briefly forgetting she had abandoned their child on his family when he was just 14. A trick to make him come back to her in Ikebukuro, he thought at the time. And even now at 23, Kanra was no way adult enough to raise a child. For all her sexiness she was impulsive and childish, completely self-centred and seemingly incapable of normal relationships. Regretfully he looked down at his little girl and saw himself and her mother in her. "At least she is here" he thought and briefly a sense of misguided nostalgia came over him as they walked along.
  12.
  13. "Don't you ever wish we were together? The three of us." Her claws were still in him, he knew.
  14.
  15. Masaomi was taken aback by some brief openness from the dark haired beauty. "I can't feel what you expect toward humans", she explained of herself, wanting her plaything to understand. "I couldn't bond with her if I tried." Some regret had struck Kanra and her own loneliness bit particularly deep because of Masaomi's words.
  16.
  17. Kida-kun was even more surprised to see his old flame kneel down for her two year old with her fur-lined jacket wide open. The little girl suddenly hugged her estranged mummy which Kida thought sweet. Deep inside he pondered if this was for real or if the ice maiden was after something for herself. "They're at the same level" he thought privately with a smile accross his lips, wishing his Kanra were human more often.

  21. To Masaomi's surprise the older Kanra offered her daughter ice cream like any normal mother would. He fumbled in his pockets, half expecting she would ask him to pay.
  22.
  23. Kanra had not planned to become a mum, nor was she ever concerned about doing the right thing in anyone elses eyes. But she knew she could never cope with some child she had no interest in, so it was either the Kida family and paying nothing else expensive childcare. Naturally, in public she had never even given birth.
  24.
  25. Masaomi understood this though he resented her for it. Besides, his daughter was probably safer with the leader of the Yellow Scarves than in Kanra's apartment, what with all the enemies she made. In his time with her, beneath all of her confidence, he had realised she feared people would hurt her unless she hurt them first and would shove them away soon as they wanted warmth she could not understand. Perhaps she had done the right thing, in her own twisted way.
  26.
  27. They must have looked like a normal family as they walked along that day, Kida thought. Ha!
  28.
  29. But Kanra actually did have a special fondness for her companion. It was rare for her to laugh unless it involved schadenfreude but her charming Masa-kun amused her. They had entertained one another even without sex in her apartment. She loved it when he acted up for the other girls and she could come tease him in front of them. But she did that with all the guys and over time Kida never did feel sure of her, she knew.
  30.
  31. Eventually all three of them sat on the park bench together so little Kanra could enjoy her ice cream. Her mummy had actually paid for all of them and promised more in one of those bursts of excitability Masaomi actually missed. Kanra Kida's older brother was never so generous and was quietly irked Kanra was letting their daughter stuff her face so much before mealtime. That didn't mean he wasn't enjoying the moment but as usual she pushed things a little too far with her mouth.
  32.
  33. "If she's your little sister why do you treat her like a daughter? Why is she named after me?"
  34.
  35. Suddenly the high schooler remembered why he hated Kanra. "I wish often I were a normal adult father with a normal grown up girlfriend but you are no grown up," he snarked, "and where is my normal life because of your selfishness?"
  36.
  37. "I'll take her back off you if she's such a problem."
  38.
  39. "N-n-no!" Always when Kanra turned up Masaomi expected trouble, knowing she was a girl who might do anything. She was only joking and thought the look on his face hilarious, to his relief. She loved toying with him like this but she did it to everyone. Kida usually found this fun, but not when it was about his kid.
  40.
  41. It seemed no sooner had things turned icy when Kanra taunted someone she had recognised passing by, breaking the atmosphere.
  42.
  43. Masaomi heard a familiar growl of "Ka-aan-ra!" and held his little one tightly for worry she be caught up in the crossfire. The presence of little Kanra calmed Shizuo's rage till her mother accused him of having a thing for little girls. Worse than that, she implicated Masaomi in sharing this opinion of the young man in the bartender's suit. "I-I-I..." Kida needn't have worried. Shizuo knew better, his anger firmly focused on the young woman before him.
  44.
  45. Shizuo chased Kanra off into the distance as Kida sat there with his daughter like a grown up. Just Kanra things.
