  1. Find a missing child:
  2. Summary:
  3. PCs are tasked with finding a missing child, but it its actually not a child, but a young man. The man ran away with a girl from the cockroach clan, and is especting a child. The young man cant go back as the judges might execute him, and he would be forced to separate from the girl and the child. He does want to run away with her from the cockroach clan, but they will be on their own and wont be able to survive without help. PCs must choose how they wish to handle the situation.
  4. Getting the quest:
  5. The PCs are called to the office of Tasker Gruber, its a humble office that mostly holds paper and a place for 2 additional people to sit, along with the tasker's desk and chair. There is only a boarded up window due to a break-in earlier that week.
  6. Tasker Gruber tells the PCs that he needs them to find a missing child, the fee for the job seems to be worth sending them, but nothing out of the ordinary. He gives them a location for where they can find the parents, and he tells them that the child was helping out the clan's millitia in their resistance against the cockroach clan. He does suspect the child have been kidnapped, but the parents believes that he is just lost.
  7. Legwork:
  8. Speak with parents:
  9. The parents tells the PCs that their child have gone missing and they just want them to find him. They are clearly upset and not very helpful to the actual investigation, but they will give a rough description of his looks and clothes he wore when he left, and say that they last saw him helping out the clan's small millitia.
  10. Speak with clan millitia:
  11. The millitia is more helpful and forthcomming, but dont know too much. They mention that he likes to patrol alone, just over a hill from the village, a little dangerous but he could manage. They also said that there have likely been something on his mind the last few weeks, and he usually got back to the camp late, just before sundown, but he didnt really share anything with the rest of the millitia. They can however show the PCs where the usually patrolled and last place they saw him.
  12. Look at last place he was spotted:
  13. He was last seen standing watch on a hill, north of the camp. He volunteered for that duty the day he disappeared, apparently he just never came back to town, maybe set out into the wastes. If the PCs were escorted to the spot by the millitia, he will mention that he has either gotten lost, or killed by the cockroach clan.
  14. Looking around the place will reveal some trash and markings that this is a usual watchpost.
  15. From the watchpost, they see mostly mossy or sandcovered hills, but its a vast open area between, with some larger rock formations that could hide things and provide hinderance for attackers, but also cover.
  16. Inquire about events in the area:
  17. By asking around or listening to rumors, the PCs can discern that the cockroach clan have been raiding the area. The clan itself have not been hit, at least not in the last month, but travellers and traders travelling to and from the clan's camp have been attacked. This is not exactly out of the ordinary, as the cockroach clan isnt known to directly attack clan camps in open force, and might be occupied elsewhere.
  18. Track Cockroach-clan movement:
  19. There are many means to track the cockroach clan's movement, but information from the judges are the most detailed. The cockroach clan are making attacks on various parts of the protectorate, but the clan is split into several groups, and the one around the camp with the missing child have not been very active, except for hitting traders in the area, not enough to send a force of strenght compared to other locations, but the judges are considering keeping an eye on the movement, incase they are planning something big.
  20. Groundwork:
  21. The PCs should have enough information to get to work if they have done all the legwork, and might even have some theories about what happened.
  22. Kids personality:
  23. By asking around, they get a lot of general answers, but one guy in the millitia will joke that they tried to get him laid one time in justitan not too long ago, the kid ran out of the brothel as soon as he had the chance, and they all laughted at him for that.
  24. Investigating the rock formation:
  25. There is a bunch of trash around the rock formation, but after some searching, they find what looks to be a small den, just large enough for 2 adults and a straw mat. There are candles and some cloth lying around, but mostly scrap. Whomever was here have taken the most essential and left the trash behind.
  26. Looking for the local Cockroach clan:
  27. The cockroach clan is still hitting traders, so by making use of them by triangulation or by posing as traders, they can easily find the area where the cockroach clan operates, and from there, they can easily find a camp in a hill by some simple tracking.
  28. Confrontation:
  29. Scouting out the camp:
  30. By scouting the camp from a distance, the PCs will see a lot of cockroach clanners, an estimation of 100 people based on their dwelling and people moving around. The majority is capable of fighting, but there is likely even more people elsewhere, hitting traders and travellers.
  31. With binoculars or equivalent, the PCs can make out important locations and sentry posts. With a really good roll, they can spot the kid in the camp, walking around with a girl about the same age as he, with a large belly. They can also spot what looks to be the chieftain.
  32. By sneaking into camp, they can find most of the previous options, it is harder, but they can also confront the kid in the camp as long as they are dressed somewhat similar to a cockroach clan member.
  33. Entering the cockroach camp:
  34. If the PCs are members of the spitalians, judges or chroniclers, the fighters of the cockroach clan attacks. If the group had no judge member, these attackers can be subdued by non-lethal combat and persuaded to talk things out. If there is a judge in the party, they demand that he is executed with a sledgehammer blow to the head, with his own hammer, before they are willing to talk.
  35. If the group have none of these, the fighters will still be hostile, but not attack before the PCs have had a chance to explain why they are there.
  36. If the PCs ask for the child, they will call their chieftain, whom will be impatient. If the PCs state quickly and simply what they want, he will tell his fighters to bring the kid and hand him over. The kid will resist and yell that he cant leave without "her". If the PCs spend too long time explaining, the chieftain says that there is nothing for them here, and they should leave before he sends his fighters on them.
  37. Talking with the kid:
  38. The young man is not willing to go back to his family, not when there is a child on the way, and its his. He does not indentify as a cockroach clanner, but due to the girl's father, the chieftain, his child most certainly will be. So he will not willingly leave his girl and child behind, and if he goes back to justitan, he is likely to be executed by the judges, and as long as the chieftain has a say in the matter, the girl and child may never leave the clan. Besides, surviving on their own is not possible without help, and his parents and clan, would never accept a cockroach clanner into their midst.
  39.
  40. [plot hole: PCs might not get the results they need to reach this stage, improvisation is likely needed, or maybe they can simply fail the task, and have to make up convincing lies to "complete" it]
  41.
  42. Solution:
  43. Take the kid to his parents:
  44. The young man will resist, but if knocked unconcious or tied up, he will struggle too much to run away. The parents will be happy and pay, but the kid will not be happy. The final outcome of this solution will be uncertain for some time, but it no longer involves the PCs.
  45. Take the kid to the judges:
  46. The judges will appriciate the work from the PCs, and might get some background reward (allies, network, secrets and such), but no money. The kid is executed for treason according to the law.
  47. Leave the kid with the cockroach clan:
  48. The PCs does not get any reward and nothing really happens. But the kid will ask the PCs to tell his parents that he is dead, and give them a memento of his that they can sell in exchange for delivering the message. (its a small tech item that can be sold to the chroniclers for a small sum)
  49. Smuggle out the kid and the girl:
  50. A easy solution, but they wont survive for long, and the chieftain is deadset on getting his daughter and grandchild back. The chieftain will find them and bring them back to the clan, the kid is punished by always being bottom rank in the clan and treated like shit. (no reward)
  51. Smuggle the kid and girl out, and deal with the chieftain:
  52. The tiny family can survive for some time, but they cant go back to civilisation, so they do their best, but eventually is lost to the harsh world in borca. (no reward)
  53. Smuggle the kid and girl out, deal with the chieftain, and find a community for them to stay:
  54. The tiny family tries to keep their background secret and integrate nicely into the community and stays like this for the forseeable future. (background benefit based on what the kid and the girl can provide the PCs)
  55. Kill everyone:
  56. The PCs can report to the judges, and assist them in completely annihilating the cockroach clan, leaving no survivors. (i really dont want to encourage this approach with a reward, but i still want it to be logical, so the judges may reward the PCs with money and background benefits)
  57. Summary:
  58. - Pick up job from tasker
  59. - Talk with family and millitia
  60. - Investigate leads
  61. - Track down cockroach clan as best lead
  62. - Scout camp and confront kid
  63. - Find a solution to the situation.
