  1. Her head was throbbing when she woke up. There was a blinding, brain searing light shining on her. She could not move and she did not know where she was. She screwed her eyes shut against the light and sparks danced in the darkness. She slowly worked to gather her thoughts and to piece together what had happened. She had been at the bar near her apartment, there was a man there. There had been a funny, handsome, friendly man at the bar They had laughed and danced. They had drinks, lots of drinks. She remembered that much and then… nothing, a blank space where memories should have been.
  2. After a while her eyes adjusted to the light. Plain cinderblock walls, a plain white ceiling, and a plain cement floor. Directly opposite her was a red, metal, overhead door. She guessed that she was in something like a garage or maybe a storage unit. The rear half of the floor was covered by a thick, blue, plastic tarp. There was a sturdy but plain wooden chair on the tarp. There was a double set powerful flood lights placed in front of the chair. She was in the chair and dozens of feet of rough rope were expertly wrapped around her, securing her so firmly that it hurt to breath.
  3. As all of these facts dawned on her the panic and fear crashed upon her like a tsunami. She struggled as hard as she could. She screamed so loudly it hurt her ears. She screamed and struggled for what felt like ages but the ropes binding her calves to the front legs of the chair and ropes wrapped around her torso didn’t budge and if anyone heard her screams they gave no sign. As she grew exhausted from the effort she tried to force her racing thoughts into order, she knew she to try to stay calm enough to find a way out of this nightmare. That was when the door opened.
  4. The sound of the door was a cold, rolling rattle like the sound of a huge metallic spider stirring from sleep. She couldn’t see what was beyond the open door and the man shut it quickly, slamming it with enough force to make the bottom edge bounce up once upon impact. This man was not the the man from the bar the night before. This man was taller, thinner and walking with a severe limp. He was dressed all in black clothing, pants and shirt made of a strong looking, stiff fabric and covered with odd shaped pockets. They reminded her of the kind of clothes a police officer or soldier might wear. He was wearing big, gleaming black leather boots. He carried a yellow bucket in one hand and whatever was in that bucket smelled so bad that she had to fight the urge to vomit. In the other hand held a chain and the thing at the other end was a snapping turtle 150 times larger than any snapping turtle should ever be. The man began to speak as he and the turtle walked slowly towards her.
  5. “Macrochelys temminckii, commonly called the alligator snapping turtle. The largest one ever recorded weighed 249 pounds. This one is not that big. This one only weighs 206 pounds, but that’s still more than I weigh!”
  6. The man grinned widely as he set the stinking bucket on the floor. He reached in with a gloved hand and produced a large, visibly rotting fish. He dangled the fish in front of the horrifying turtle and faster than she could see the turtle”s powerful jaws closed on the rotten fish with a very loud click followed immediately by the crunch of shattering bones. The man laughed quietly and spoke again.
  7. “His name is Othello and I love him very, very much.”
  8. Then the man lifted the bucket and threw the contents at her. Several large, dead, rotting fish landed on her with a wet thud. They felt slimy and the smell was so powerful that the woman began to gag and soon covered herself in bitter vomit. The man laughed again. Then he dropped the chain.
