  14. Without any reservations going into it, he landed a beautiful opening quad. Although he is usually critical of himself even when he watches his clean skates, Uno comments, “I feel satisfied with the jumps I put out here. It turned out better than I imagined.” These jumps are an indispensable, necessary weapon for when he moves up to the senior stage in the near future. Uno finished up with a fist pump, celebrating that cool and collected jump towards a higher level of competition.
  15.
  16. The second quad following the first jumping pass was marked underrotated; however, the other jumps were all landed cleanly. Murakami Kanako, who is also coached by Yamada Machiko, is in awe of his consistency. “He doesn’t make any mistakes, not even in practice. It’s really incredible,” said Murakami. Uno also landed a clean quad at Asian Trophy, his first competition of the season. He continues to work on improving his success rate in practice.

  18. Although Uno was unable to overtake the reigning Junior Grand Prix champion, Jin Boyang, who landed three quads in the free, the point spread was not wide. Coach Yamada said, “If you do it properly, you can still compete as equals with really good skaters.” In a competition held in his hometown, the resounding applause from the crowd pushed the 16 year-old a step forward in his career with this performance.

  23. Uno: The Smile of the Runner-Up
  24.
  25. The men’s free skate of the fourth event in the figure skating Junior Grand Prix series took place on the 14th, the last day of the competition, at Morikoro Park Skating Rink in Nagakute City. Second in the short program, Uno Shoma (16 years old, Chukyo University Chukyo High School) missed out on the win but received a high score and was the runner up. His entire face lit up in a smile as he took in the supportive cheers from his home crowd fans.
  26.
  27. Right when he finished his performance, Uno celebrated with an ardent fist pump. Although he was two points shy from winning, his expression beamed with satisfaction. He earned 150.21 points in the free skate, which combined with the short program for a total of 219.99, a new personal best by a mile.
  28.
  29. The reason behind the huge new PB was being successful in landing the jumps, the big point-getters in figure skating. This is the first season he is challenging quads, and his opening quad here was sublime. The next jumping pass was a quadruple-double combination but the quad was marked “underrotated,” but it was landed.
  30.
  31. Uno also landed his quad in his previous international competition. “I wouldn’t say I have it down, but I worked on improving the likelihood of success. Right now my triples are secure so I’m able to skate with ease.” He walks with head held high knowing a big weapon is in his grasp.
  32.
  33. Uno’s appeal lies in his sharp skating and deep expressive abilities. With that said, the season is still just beginning. “I want to keep on skating, keep on improving. I want to make sure my movements are with the music and that it flows seamlessly from beginning to end. I want more feelings and emotions to come through my skating.” The competitions will keep on coming as he works to overcome them. With eyes on the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, this 16 year-old had an ideal season starter here in his hometown.
