  1. Just like the other sections, the academic content for speaking can come from any field, but is more often from humanities and life science than from physics or geology, for example.
  2. Text
  3. - Introduces a general concept or issue, and some details or aspects of it.
  4. When you’re reading, try to identify two of something that the text discusses.
  5. Audio
  6. - Gives an example of each “thing” that was mentioned in the text, or gives two different examples of the main concept from the text, or describes a study about the topic.
  7. Response
  8. You can organize your response in a similar way to the opinion responses:
  9. 1 Introduction: Summarize what the text says (or simply state [and define] the topic)
  10. 2 Lead-in: Say what type of points the professor makes (“The professor gives two examples of verbal and nonverbal communication.”)
  11. 3 First point
  12. 4 Detail/example
  13. 5 Second point
  14. 6 Detail/example
  15. (7 Conclusion - if you have time)
  16. ---
  17. Sometimes the lecture is about a single study or experiment. In this case, the “two points” can be the method and the results of the experiment, or you could have one point for each group in the study. (Many psychological experiments include two groups: an experimental group and a control group.)
  18.
  19. For example, if they want to study a new headache relief medication:
  20. control group = patients who receive sugar pills or some other fake treatment
  21. experimental group = patients who receive the real medication they’re testing
  22. (The idea is to make sure that the only difference between the groups is the specific thing you’re testing.)
  23. ---
  24. Record your responses to the ETS Guide questions.
  25. Share the least bad one with me.
  26. ---
  27. BREAK
  28. ---
  29. Use https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20201102T1915 to find the time in your time zone that TOEFL will start on Monday. (One hour later than usual for Venezuela and Russia.)
  30. ---
  31. Writing Section: fourth and final section, two tasks
  32. 1 integrated: 3 minutes to read a text, time to listen to a lecture, 20 minutes to write about how the lecture relates to the text
  33. 2 independent: 30 minutes to answer (and support your answer to) a choice question
  34. ---
  35. Practice the professors-on-television topic and send me what you are able to write in 20 minutes.
  36. ---
  37. You can complete your response in a few more minutes after you send that to me.
  38. ---
  39. Homework: Look at the five sample responses to the integrated writing. What’s good and bad about each one? What score should each response receive out of 5?
