  1. To assume something someone would say "Approximately 2" for instance. To declare something is 2.1 but you don't know the thousandth place, you would say 2.1X. Another example would be Pi, Pi=3.1415968- . But we don't know all of Pi yet, or ever, because Pi is infinite. Pi does not equal 3.14, Pi=3.X, Pi=3.1X, Pi=3.14X etc.
