  53. The Abel-Line project was an attempt to artificially develop a sure-fire Evangelion pilot, in order to not have to rely on trying to harvest Children from the population. In the 'creating a functional pilot sense,' it worked.
  54.
  55. In the 'creating a fully functional replacement for Children' sense, it was an abject failure. The initial batch of genderless clones, uncreatively dubbed 'Alpha-One' were a catastrophe, with less than half of the ten specimens even surviving the development process.
  56.
  57. Of the remaining three, one died during 'birth' after it took its first breath. It was later discovered it had a fatal allergy to nitrogen.
  58.
  59. Another had brittle bones, haemophilia, and thin, almost translucent skin. It died weeks after birth, suffering fatal hemorrhaging due to a wrinkle in its bassinet's blanket. The last surviving specimen, designated Alpha 1.6, 'only' suffers from oversensitive nerves, a weakened immune system, and a lack of muscle and bone density. Compared to the fatal defects in its 'siblings,' Specimen Six is spectacularly fortunate.
  60.
  61. Specimen Six's genetic structure was analyzed and copied, to be used as a template for any future work on the Abel-Line project, with the intent to gradually improve each batch by picking the strongest specimen and building the next one off of that clone.
  62.
  63. Then the budget got cut, and further progress became impossible. Frustrated scientists decided to continue with the project as best they could, which resulted in them just making more copies of Specimen Six. When the Angels showed up, the semi-functional failure answered the call to the entry plug, figuring that even if it isn't perfect, it might as well try to fulfill its purpose.
  64.
  65. Personality-wise, Alpha is weirdly charming, if only because he is naïve and rather oblivious. He's lived in the labs his entire life, and is all too aware of what he is, which gives him a rather alien outlook on mortality. He can communicate reasonably enough, but he's still distinctly unnerving to deal with until you get used to him.
