  1. (06:56:42 AM) Cheeseness: But! We're here to talk about The Cave
  2. (06:56:45 AM) Iiko: Got it. I had one toy like that
  3. (06:56:47 AM) Cheeseness: Who's been playing over the past week?
  4. (06:56:55 AM) brainiac744 [b8034e72@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  5. (06:57:00 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, like the labyrinth toys :D
  6. (06:57:22 AM) Iiko: I've been playing The Cave
  7. (06:57:23 AM) Syd: I still need to run through The Cave one more time to get all the endings
  8. (06:57:28 AM) ALPHATT [55ee5a4e@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  9. (06:57:41 AM) ALPHATT: Hey guys
  10. (06:57:44 AM) Cheeseness: I'm in the middle of my third run
  11. (06:57:46 AM) TheCherrieSherrie [443982d3@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  12. (06:57:48 AM) Cheeseness: Hey ALPHATT
  13. (06:57:51 AM) Cheeseness: Hi TheCherrieSherrie
  14. (06:58:01 AM) ALPHATT: chat working okay?
  15. (06:58:06 AM) Cheeseness: Seems to be
  16. (06:58:09 AM) TheCherrieSherrie: Hello
  17. (06:58:12 AM) Cheeseness: Don't chat whilst you're playing :D
  18. (06:58:18 AM) Iiko: I know it's probably blasphemy here, but can I say I didn't like it? Much?
  19. (06:58:29 AM) Cheeseness: That's fine
  20. (06:58:31 AM) ALPHATT: the cave?
  21. (06:58:36 AM) Cheeseness: We're discussing what we do and don't like about the game :)
  22. (06:58:36 AM) Iiko: Yes
  23. (06:58:43 AM) Cheeseness: I'm really enjoying it so far
  24. (06:58:55 AM) Syd: I think I'll hold off on my next playthrough until they can implement unlocked FPS. I think I'd enjoy some silky-smooth 60FPS spelunking.
  25. (06:59:10 AM) Cheeseness: But I avoided all pre-release information. The only thing I knew about it was the title and that there were seven characters
  26. (06:59:19 AM) ALPHATT: Yeah, it has issues, for example, the narrative is compromised because of the presentation, but it's a nice neat package
  27. (06:59:24 AM) ALPHATT: I love it to bits
  28. (06:59:29 AM) ALPHATT: but it's not the second coming of monkey island
  29. (06:59:46 AM) ReverendGumby [4c67eb2f@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  30. (06:59:48 AM) Iiko: I don't know if the platform-like element works
  31. (07:00:10 AM) ALPHATT: It only works if you like looking at animations, I appreciate and hate backtracking at the same time
  32. (07:00:20 AM) ALPHATT: the issue is that, the world doesn't have as much interaction as Metroid
  33. (07:00:20 AM) Cheeseness: Might be best to avoid playing music that's not from the game ^_^
  34. (07:00:34 AM) ALPHATT: so backtracking can cause these vacum areas, although it is good when you're solving puzzles
  35. (07:00:47 AM) ALPHATT: the issue is when you know the solution, just running around because you have to
  36. (07:00:51 AM) Iiko: I think Ron said the goal was to avoid walking too much, but I think it's worse than walking
  37. (07:00:59 AM) ALPHATT: there1s some hard puzzles, but as a whole, it's not that hard
  38. (07:01:12 AM) Cheeseness: I find some of the platform controls to be a little awkward
  39. (07:01:18 AM) ALPHATT: it's experimentation at the end of the day
  40. (07:01:35 AM) ALPHATT: the adventure game, is a genre that requires exceptional game design, there's nothing else to fall back on
  41. (07:01:45 AM) GrumpyGamer [GrumpyGame@hide-2D8716B5.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] entered the room.
  42. (07:01:49 AM) GameClubFan_743788 [5de8ef78@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  43. (07:01:49 AM) Cheeseness: Hey GrumpyGamer
  44. (07:01:50 AM) Syd: Hey GrumpyGamer!
  45. (07:01:52 AM) Voodoo_Lord: hooray
  46. (07:01:57 AM) GrumpyGamer: Hello!
  47. (07:02:02 AM) ALPHATT: Hey guys
  48. (07:02:03 AM) Iiko: Hello Ron!
  49. (07:02:06 AM) ***madmoose faints
  50. (07:02:11 AM) ReverendGumby: Hello all :)
  51. (07:02:11 AM) yama: I'm enjoying The Cave with a controller so much that I haven't tried any other ways to play it.
  52. (07:02:17 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Hi Ron!
  53. (07:02:37 AM) Syd: I've played every playthrough mostly with keyboard, but I've used the mouse controls on occasion as well. I haven't tried my 360 controller with it.
  54. (07:02:46 AM) GameClubFan_216039: i love the cave Ron! Sequel? :-)
  55. (07:02:50 AM) ALPHATT: Can you guys hear the mic?
  56. (07:02:58 AM) Cheeseness: You're a bit quiet, ALPHATT
  57. (07:02:59 AM) ReverendGumby: Not quite loud but clear
  58. (07:03:02 AM) brainiac744: kind of low
  59. (07:03:07 AM) ALPHATT: right, let me look at this
  60. (07:03:17 AM) ReverendGumby: Keyboard's coming through well.
  61. (07:03:18 AM) yama: It just bugs me a little that it changes the control scheme to keyboard if I use alt+enter to change from full screen mode to windowed. >.<
  62. (07:03:19 AM) Syd: Tap-a-tap-a-tap
  63. (07:03:27 AM) ReverendGumby: *thumbs up*
  64. (07:03:28 AM) brainiac744: much better
  65. (07:03:32 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, it's good
  66. (07:03:46 AM) carlfaced [5002bcd1@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  67. (07:04:17 AM) GrumpyGamer: I know the secrets.
  68. (07:04:30 AM) Cheeseness: You and your secrets
  69. (07:04:57 AM) Iiko: Ah, so there's more than one secret?
  70. (07:05:03 AM) GrumpyGamer: Needs more dashes.
  71. (07:05:34 AM) ALPHATT: indeed
  72. (07:05:41 AM) Naron [51a751f3@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  73. (07:05:46 AM) Cheeseness: I'm thinking of setting up some extra DNS records so that we can have d-o-u-b-l-e-f-i-n-e-g-a-m-e-c-l-u-b.tv
  74. (07:05:46 AM) ReverendGumby: Enjoy the zoo, alpha
  75. (07:05:58 AM) Naron: Hello people
  76. (07:06:05 AM) Cheeseness: Hi Naron, carlfaced
  77. (07:06:12 AM) ALPHATT: stand by while I work my black magic
  78. (07:06:20 AM) Tonjevic: oh man, what's this song called? My mother used to play it all the time
  79. (07:06:22 AM) carlfaced: hello
  80. (07:06:25 AM) ALPHATT: herp derp for no built in borderless windowed on the cave
  81. (07:06:27 AM) Iiko: "The very many Secrets of Monkey Island"
  82. (07:06:27 AM) yama: We've been put on hold. :O
  83. (07:06:27 AM) fightclubdoll [46a02dd2@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  84. (07:06:30 AM) GrumpyGamer: Heelo
  85. (07:06:33 AM) fightclubdoll: I'm here!!!1
  86. (07:06:35 AM) Cheeseness: Hey fightclubdoll!
  87. (07:06:37 AM) Cheeseness: You're here!
  88. (07:06:38 AM) fightclubdoll: It is I!!!!
  89. (07:06:46 AM) fightclubdoll: Here I am!!
  90. (07:06:50 AM) ReverendGumby: There you are.
  91. (07:06:58 AM) fightclubdoll: =-)
  92. (07:07:04 AM) Naron left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  93. (07:07:12 AM) Naron [51a751f3@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  94. (07:07:42 AM) fightclubdoll: I love the new side by side option.
  95. (07:07:46 AM) fightclubdoll: It works for me.
  96. (07:07:56 AM) ALPHATT: I've left 3ds max open, let me deal with this
  97. (07:07:58 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: Awesome! :D
  98. (07:07:59 AM) carlfaced: same here
  99. (07:08:13 AM) Cheeseness: So, last week, the interview stream cut out early, and GrumpyGamer's answers to a couple of answers were missed
  100. (07:08:25 AM) ALPHATT left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  101. (07:08:41 AM) Cheeseness: Ron, would you like to talk again about which of your games you're most proud of?
  102. (07:08:53 AM) GrumpyGamer: What platform are you playing on?
  103. (07:09:06 AM) fightclubdoll: <3 The Cave
  104. (07:09:07 AM) Cheeseness: I blieve Alphatt is playing on PC
  105. (07:09:17 AM) Cheeseness: (a PC that runs Windows)
  106. (07:09:21 AM) Syd: I think he's running the Windows version. Cheeseness was going to stream the Linux version, but ran into problems with his streaming software.
  107. (07:09:30 AM) GrumpyGamer: thanks
  108. (07:09:34 AM) fightclubdoll: No Twins this time, I see... c'est la guerre
  109. (07:09:56 AM) GameClubFan_216039 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  110. (07:10:01 AM) jeremywc [jeremywc@hide-A61C622E.dhcp.sprn.tx.charter.com] entered the room.
  111. (07:10:32 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: How many times have you played through?
  112. (07:10:40 AM) fightclubdoll: Time Traveler is my #2 fav.
  113. (07:11:01 AM) fightclubdoll: I've played through 9 1/2 times.
  114. (07:11:10 AM) Cheeseness: Syd says that the score here sounds like something from Portal 2
  115. (07:11:24 AM) Cheeseness: I agree
  116. (07:11:31 AM) Iiko: Me too
  117. (07:11:31 AM) TheCherrieSherrie: Time Traveller is fun. Although the hovering sound gets a tad annoying lol
  118. (07:11:47 AM) Syd: It is a bit similar to the title screen music for Portal 2 (one of the title screens, at least)
  119. (07:11:51 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Did you have much involvement with the game's soundtrack? Was there anything specific that you were aiming for?
  120. (07:12:26 AM) ReverendGumby: Does this score differ from the XBox version? It doesn't sound familiar.
  121. (07:12:43 AM) fightclubdoll: I even became buddies with Stephen Stanton, the voice of the Cave, not long ago. (BONUS)
  122. (07:12:46 AM) GrumpyGamer: I wanted the music to be very minimal and convoy most of the emotion though the environmental sounds.
  123. (07:13:07 AM) GrumpyGamer: Brain Min did the music and captured that really well.
  124. (07:13:16 AM) Cheeseness: Did that make you put extra emphasis on the ambient cave sounds?
  125. (07:13:37 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yeah, they had more of a focus due to that.
  126. (07:14:02 AM) fightclubdoll: Very appropriate for the environment... in a cave the sounds of movement seem amplified. (I speak from spelunking experience)
  127. (07:14:24 AM) ReverendGumby: Is "Behold: science!" quoting anything in particular?
  128. (07:14:28 AM) GrumpyGamer: Did the caves you've been into talk? I assume they all do.
  129. (07:14:29 AM) Iiko: "Behold! Science!" That reminds me of Portal too
  130. (07:14:46 AM) fightclubdoll: Of course!
  131. (07:14:49 AM) Cheeseness: :3
  132. (07:16:02 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Did you spend time in any real caves for research purposes?
  133. (07:16:18 AM) fightclubdoll: I was allowed to take some mineral specimens with me from a very kindly cave in Arizona. Laid back and cool.
  134. (07:16:20 AM) Syd: These museum exhibits are some of my favorite things in the game.
  135. (07:16:36 AM) ReverendGumby: Mmm... toast...
  136. (07:16:39 AM) yama: Syd, they are great! :D
  137. (07:16:58 AM) GrumpyGamer: HA! I'm horrible claustrophobia.
  138. (07:16:59 AM) fightclubdoll: I love the exhibits! Smurg is the best word ever.
  139. (07:17:00 AM) yama: The Smurg in particular is hilarious.
  140. (07:17:37 AM) GameClubFan_577769 [9d59fc47@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  141. (07:17:41 AM) ReverendGumby: I think they were used to open cat tins.
  142. (07:17:44 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Oh! Was that confronting? I hear that the developer of Missile Command had nightmares about nuclear holocaust whilst making that. Game developers are such tortured souls ;_;
  143. (07:17:56 AM) yama: Although, the dinosaur exhibit comes close to the Smurg in hilariousness. ;0
  144. (07:18:02 AM) GrumpyGamer: We suffer for our art.
  145. (07:18:07 AM) TheCherrieSherrie: aw, come on, the "smell like a dinosaur" exhibit is awesome too. That's something I want to see IRL here
  146. (07:18:13 AM) Cheeseness: yama: I kinda like the dinosaur better
  147. (07:18:33 AM) Tonjevic: "Over ten thousand years ago" is technically accurate...
  148. (07:18:44 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: When exploring merchanidising options, was a dinosaur exhibit perfume dispenser considered?
  149. (07:19:00 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll would buy millions
  150. (07:19:03 AM) GrumpyGamer: No, but that's a great idea.
  151. (07:19:16 AM) fightclubdoll: There are some huge open caverns not far from where I live in Virginia... I'm not sure I can see stalagmites without trying to punch them for loot. (Ah, video games) Alas I've learned there's no lava.
  152. (07:19:22 AM) Syd: Who wouldn't want to smell like a stinky old dinosaur?
  153. (07:19:29 AM) fightclubdoll: I live for Double Fine swag.
  154. (07:19:34 AM) Syd: Yay, the rangfust!
  155. (07:19:37 AM) Cheeseness: Yay!
  156. (07:19:51 AM) Cheeseness: I wish I had've nabbed some Stacking dolls whilst they were still available :(
  157. (07:19:55 AM) fightclubdoll: RANGFUST!
  158. (07:19:57 AM) Iiko: I got stuck here
  159. (07:19:59 AM) GrumpyGamer: We had to put in that beep due to Germany.
  160. (07:20:09 AM) Cheeseness: Iiko: I thnk a lot of people got stuck here :D
  161. (07:20:16 AM) Naron: GrumpyGamer: Are any of the characters in the game based on people you have read about or know?
  162. (07:20:22 AM) brainiac744 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  163. (07:20:28 AM) ReverendGumby: ...because Germans don't like historical characters?
  164. (07:20:40 AM) GrumpyGamer: He said Hitler
  165. (07:20:44 AM) ReverendGumby: Oh!
  166. (07:20:51 AM) Syd: Well, that explains it
  167. (07:20:58 AM) GrumpyGamer: But was had already recorded the dialog, so we had to beep it.
  168. (07:21:04 AM) Tonjevic: Also the german government and establishment is touchy and censorious
  169. (07:21:05 AM) GrumpyGamer: *we had
  170. (07:21:07 AM) ReverendGumby: That's hilarious.
  171. (07:21:08 AM) Tonjevic: it's kinda lame :\
  172. (07:21:30 AM) carlfaced left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  173. (07:21:34 AM) Voodoo_Lord: It reminds me of the whole swastika deal with the latest Indy videogame
  174. (07:21:40 AM) fightclubdoll: Psst, Cheeseness ...*bragging* My set of Stacking Dolls is SIGNED. (don't tell anyone)
  175. (07:21:42 AM) Voodoo_Lord: It's stupid and kinda offensive in a way
  176. (07:21:54 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: I know. You were banging on about it for ages <3
  177. (07:22:05 AM) fightclubdoll: =-D
  178. (07:22:11 AM) fightclubdoll: best swag ever
  179. (07:22:11 AM) ReverendGumby: *singing* Oil is a dinosaur.
  180. (07:23:03 AM) fightclubdoll: The amazing Mr. Gilbert, the dreamy Lee Petty, and the legendary Tim of Legend all signed them. I <3 them so.
  181. (07:23:40 AM) yama: GrumpyGamer, you said that you take a long break from your games after they have been released. How do you feel when watching it being played by someone?
  182. (07:23:45 AM) Cheeseness: I love that people thought to build ladders in the same places
  183. (07:23:55 AM) Syd: There's "that one puzzle"
  184. (07:24:00 AM) Syd: Every adventure game has "that one puzzle
  185. (07:24:08 AM) fightclubdoll: Have I mentioned that I am crazy about the Time Traveler's level puzzles? Brings me back to Day of the Tentacle in a big way.
  186. (07:24:15 AM) Syd: I didn't get stuck on the bucket thing, but it seems that quite a few people did
  187. (07:24:18 AM) Cheeseness: "Series 1": http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0184/8464/products/Monk_box_1024x1024.jpg
  188. (07:24:41 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Buckets are the nightmare of GA players
  189. (07:24:45 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, I think that the Time Traveler is definitely vying for being my favourite (between her and the Knight)
  190. (07:24:46 AM) ReverendGumby: The rangfust is my favorite puzzle in the entire game.
  191. (07:24:48 AM) Voodoo_Lord: see hit the road and Monkey 2
  192. (07:25:41 AM) Cheeseness: What exactly does the GEOAT do?
  193. (07:25:41 AM) fightclubdoll: I love some Sam N Max, too. Naturally.
  194. (07:25:45 AM) Syd: I think the Time Traveler's area is my favorite in general
  195. (07:25:46 AM) ReverendGumby: Skeletons! <3
  196. (07:25:52 AM) Tonjevic: Cheeseness: gloats
  197. (07:25:57 AM) Cheeseness: Is he employed to sit around and be great?
  198. (07:26:05 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, the skeletons are a great touch
  199. (07:26:08 AM) fightclubdoll: pretty much
  200. (07:26:21 AM) fightclubdoll: the GEOAT gets a primo parking space
  201. (07:26:21 AM) GrumpyGamer: Those were a pain to get working right!
  202. (07:26:22 AM) Syd: One of the many perks of being the Greatest Employee of All Time™
  203. (07:26:25 AM) Cheeseness: They give a subtle reminder that your actions in the past have some level of permanence
  204. (07:27:13 AM) ReverendGumby: I had to check that the twins leave two skeletons.
  205. (07:27:27 AM) Cheeseness: Thog feels like he's based on a real person
  206. (07:28:09 AM) ReverendGumby: So, ALPHATT brought his own bucket... will he skip the rangfust puzzle?
  207. (07:28:16 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Was there any inspiration that you know of for the cloudy, glowing respawning effect?
  208. (07:28:34 AM) Cheeseness: I have no idea. Let's hope not
  209. (07:28:39 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yes, if you bring your own bucket, you can skip that puzzle.
  210. (07:28:43 AM) GameClubFan_577769 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  211. (07:28:51 AM) Cheeseness: Isn't that great? :D
  212. (07:28:55 AM) fightclubdoll: That IS great
  213. (07:29:06 AM) Cheeseness: When I first played it, I was all "What do you mean "Now"?"
  214. (07:29:14 AM) ReverendGumby: heh
  215. (07:29:27 AM) Syd: First time I played, I accidentally cheated the bucket puzzle by bringing one from an earlier section.
  216. (07:29:41 AM) Cheeseness: I did that on my second runthrough
  217. (07:29:48 AM) fightclubdoll: woah
  218. (07:30:01 AM) fightclubdoll: ...something to try for playthru 10
  219. (07:30:13 AM) Cheeseness: Aww, poor dinosaur
  220. (07:30:18 AM) Cheeseness: Nobody gets to have any love in this game ;_;
  221. (07:30:19 AM) fightclubdoll: pity
  222. (07:30:21 AM) ReverendGumby: nooooo!
  223. (07:30:27 AM) fightclubdoll: didn't suffer tho
  224. (07:30:34 AM) fightclubdoll: love-death
  225. (07:30:44 AM) Syd: I loved that death animation
  226. (07:30:46 AM) ReverendGumby: Love hurts.
  227. (07:30:51 AM) Cheeseness: The different wheel prototypes are different shapes. They appear to be getting progressively more circular. My initial thoughts were that I just had to destroy a lot until he made a real wheel >_<
  228. (07:30:53 AM) fightclubdoll: That's how I want to go.
  229. (07:30:53 AM) Iiko: That should teach you that you should always bring a bucket with you. And a sausage. Never forget a sausage.
  230. (07:31:07 AM) GameClubFan_743788 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  231. (07:31:16 AM) Syd: I tried to keep a death count while played through, but then the Scientist threw a wrench in my efforts. Hard to be precise with her.
  232. (07:31:17 AM) Cheeseness: I carried a sausage through the entire game on my first two playthroughs :D
  233. (07:31:18 AM) yama: Cheeseness, I had that same thought for a while.
  234. (07:31:34 AM) GrumpyGamer: Delicious.
  235. (07:31:44 AM) fightclubdoll: Ah my buddy the postcard... that was a fun piece to carry.
  236. (07:32:12 AM) Cheeseness: On my second runthrough the postcard disappeared when I loaded the game :(
  237. (07:32:19 AM) Syd: I had a fairly uneventful postcard run. The Twins had postcard duty since it was easy to tell that they were carrying it no matter what angle I saw them from.
  238. (07:32:24 AM) fightclubdoll: A well-traveled sausage...
  239. (07:32:42 AM) Cheeseness: I wish there was an achievement for that
  240. (07:32:53 AM) fightclubdoll: ;-)
  241. (07:32:54 AM) Cheeseness: It took me a while to get the cooked to perfection achievement
  242. (07:33:01 AM) fightclubdoll: *WINK WINK*
  243. (07:33:05 AM) Syd: Call it "Carry-out" or something like that
  244. (07:33:08 AM) Cheeseness: *NUDGE NUDGE*
  245. (07:33:22 AM) fightclubdoll: nods as good as a wink to a blind bat
  246. (07:33:25 AM) Cheeseness: More unfulfilled lvoe
  247. (07:33:30 AM) GrumpyGamer: There is an achievement for the postcard. Ot there should be.
  248. (07:33:42 AM) ReverendGumby: If only we could stop patents this easily.
  249. (07:33:42 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: Ah, you're a monty python fan too? :D
  250. (07:33:57 AM) Syd: My last playthrough was a postcard run, and it went smoothly.
  251. (07:34:04 AM) fightclubdoll: we were trying to be sly, Mr. Gilbert.
  252. (07:34:07 AM) Cheeseness: I was just saying GET ON WITH IT! to Syd earlier
  253. (07:34:08 AM) ReverendGumby: Love hurts.
  254. (07:34:24 AM) fightclubdoll: Yes, there is an achievement for it. =-)
  255. (07:34:27 AM) Cheeseness: I love the paralaxing in the backgrounds
  256. (07:34:31 AM) Cheeseness: They're great
  257. (07:34:44 AM) yama: Yah. I wonder how many layers were needed to make that. :o
  258. (07:34:58 AM) fightclubdoll: dig the thumbs up
  259. (07:35:08 AM) Syd: Now the Time Traveler can just sit around and gloat about being the Greatest Employee of All Time™. All it took was a little murder.
  260. (07:35:12 AM) fightclubdoll: take that smurg and go
  261. (07:35:34 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Are the backgrounds in layers that are blurred/artificially paralaxed, or is the geometry just that far away, do you know?
  262. (07:35:34 AM) GameClubFan_795489 [50db4f6b@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  263. (07:35:48 AM) GrumpyGamer: It's blured.
  264. (07:35:54 AM) Cheeseness: Sneaky
  265. (07:36:00 AM) GameClubFan_795489: Is this only one person playing or is this multiplayer over the internet?
  266. (07:36:06 AM) Cheeseness: Only one person playing
  267. (07:36:11 AM) GrumpyGamer: Only local co-op
  268. (07:36:13 AM) fightclubdoll: OOZ
  269. (07:36:14 AM) Cheeseness: The Cave doesn't have networked multiplayer
  270. (07:36:15 AM) Syd: Only Alphatt is playing, and it has no online co-op
  271. (07:36:25 AM) fightclubdoll: lol love that
  272. (07:36:31 AM) Cheeseness: Aww, "DEAD"
  273. (07:36:31 AM) ReverendGumby: DEAD? Noooo!
  274. (07:36:34 AM) fightclubdoll: "Dead"
  275. (07:36:35 AM) yama: Hahah. That scared me on my first playhrough!
  276. (07:36:35 AM) GameClubFan_795489: no versions have online co-op?
  277. (07:36:43 AM) Syd: Local only
  278. (07:36:50 AM) Cheeseness: Whose idea was killing one of the characters, GrumpyGamer?
  279. (07:36:50 AM) GameClubFan_795489: i see, thanks
  280. (07:37:01 AM) Syd: The way co-op works, it'd be a chaotic mess if it was online
  281. (07:37:20 AM) Cheeseness: Ha, that music was a big red herring for me
  282. (07:37:23 AM) GameClubFan_795489: i love the cave's voice
  283. (07:37:30 AM) Danaroth left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  284. (07:37:43 AM) ReverendGumby: Podcast on a reel-to-reel. :)
  285. (07:37:48 AM) GameClubFan_233924 [5eaf7478@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  286. (07:37:56 AM) GrumpyGamer: Isn't that how they are done?
  287. (07:38:08 AM) GameClubFan_795489: i bought the cave on the mac app store, since it's finally out
  288. (07:38:09 AM) Syd: It sounds like that's what a lot of them used. :P
  289. (07:38:11 AM) yama: It was interesting "cheating" the zoo by using the Knight and getting a hot dog without going through the level.
  290. (07:38:31 AM) GrumpyGamer: With the Knight?
  291. (07:38:33 AM) ReverendGumby: Syd, that's what recording in a bathroom sounds like.
  292. (07:38:38 AM) fightclubdoll: I'm hoping that there may be DLC in the future that adds new playable characters and/or trades the 3 fixed (non-character linked) levels.... any chance of either of those, GrumpyGamer?
  293. (07:38:42 AM) Cheeseness: He can shield another character from the bullets
  294. (07:38:45 AM) Cheeseness: (I think)
  295. (07:38:46 AM) GameClubFan_795489: does the cave version 1.0.0 on the mac app store have all the bugfixes the steam version has already?
  296. (07:38:50 AM) GameClubFan_233924 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  297. (07:38:51 AM) GrumpyGamer: Wow.
  298. (07:38:51 AM) yama: Jump in and out of invincibility because she shoots so slowly.
  299. (07:38:58 AM) GrumpyGamer: I did not know what would work.
  300. (07:38:58 AM) Cheeseness: Emergent gameplay win!
  301. (07:39:10 AM) Syd: Undocumented features!
  302. (07:39:20 AM) GrumpyGamer: I use The Monk to TK the hotdog.
  303. (07:39:33 AM) Lis [5eaf7478@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  304. (07:39:41 AM) Cheeseness: I just use the recording to get rid of her :(
  305. (07:39:51 AM) Cheeseness: NO CLEVER POINTS FOR ME
  306. (07:39:52 AM) Syd: The Monk and the Time Traveler can cheat quite a few puzzles.
  307. (07:40:08 AM) GrumpyGamer: You solved the puzzle like a chump.
  308. (07:40:13 AM) Cheeseness: I remember being very surprised when people started screaming about the gate being left open when I never opened the gate
  309. (07:40:28 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yeah, that's a bug. :-(
  310. (07:40:29 AM) Syd: That got me first time through as well. "I know I didn't open that gate..."
  311. (07:40:31 AM) ReverendGumby: Honk the clown!
  312. (07:40:35 AM) Cheeseness: Speaking of Chump, I very much want to play Goblins 3
  313. (07:40:38 AM) Syd: Honk its nose!
  314. (07:40:40 AM) Syd: Honk it a bunch!
  315. (07:40:42 AM) fightclubdoll: Not sure if you saw my question...
  316. (07:40:46 AM) ReverendGumby: Yes!
  317. (07:40:48 AM) Syd: Keep honking!
  318. (07:40:51 AM) Syd: More
  319. (07:40:57 AM) Cheeseness: Woo!
  320. (07:40:57 AM) Syd: Haha
  321. (07:40:58 AM) GameClubFan_795489: hahahaha
  322. (07:40:59 AM) ReverendGumby: Yay!
  323. (07:40:59 AM) TheCherrieSherrie: lol
  324. (07:41:00 AM) yama: Heheh.
  325. (07:41:05 AM) GrumpyGamer: Pervert
  326. (07:41:08 AM) fightclubdoll: Mr. Gilbert: I'm hoping that there may be DLC in the future that adds new playable characters and/or trades the 3 fixed (non-character linked) levels.... any chance of either of those, GrumpyGamer?
  327. (07:41:25 AM) GrumpyGamer: I don't know.
  328. (07:41:32 AM) fightclubdoll: Fair enough. Thank you.
  329. (07:41:34 AM) Lis: Whatever happened to the scream the hunter let out when throwing herself after the monster? That was one of the funnier bits of the game.
  330. (07:41:38 AM) GrumpyGamer: I'm still on vacation.
  331. (07:41:39 AM) Syd: Fun fact: The clown's name won't change if you keep honking with the Twins. I assume that was to avoid unfortunate implications.
  332. (07:41:50 AM) ReverendGumby: Interesting.
  333. (07:41:56 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yes
  334. (07:41:58 AM) GrumpyGamer: it was
  335. (07:42:00 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: Last week Ron told us about how he needs to take a break after a project to distance himself from it
  336. (07:42:13 AM) fightclubdoll: Yes I also tried with the Twins =-) The Twins are exceptions to a few scenarios...
  337. (07:42:23 AM) Cheeseness: Whose idea was the clown nose?
  338. (07:42:24 AM) GameClubFan_795489: It seems The Cave on the Mac App Store is selling quite well, it's in the top 10 paid and grossing
  339. (07:42:28 AM) fightclubdoll: I can understand that.
  340. (07:42:37 AM) Frodofeet [ad3c633f@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  341. (07:42:42 AM) GrumpyGamer: I haven't look at the sales numbers on the Mac App Store yet.
  342. (07:42:44 AM) Cheeseness: I want to play with the Clown, Robot and Pirate
  343. (07:42:49 AM) GrumpyGamer: More than 2. I know that.
  344. (07:43:00 AM) Cheeseness: Well. Maybe not with the clown. I think I've played with the clown enough.
  345. (07:43:08 AM) GameClubFan_795489: it's top 10! i tell you
  346. (07:43:10 AM) ReverendGumby: Ew.
  347. (07:43:11 AM) GrumpyGamer: :-)
  348. (07:43:46 AM) ReverendGumby: Must be NiCad.
  349. (07:43:56 AM) Cheeseness: Everready Eels
  350. (07:43:59 AM) fightclubdoll: When I write something personal (poetry, essays, stories) or paint... I have to get away from it afterward. In my case, I feel drained.
  351. (07:44:10 AM) GameClubFan_795489: but will we MAS owners have to wait another 30 days for the bugfixes to be approved by apple?
  352. (07:44:19 AM) Syd: A high-tech battery for a rather low-tech recording device.
  353. (07:44:23 AM) fightclubdoll: did you record the elevator music?
  354. (07:44:28 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yes.
  355. (07:44:28 AM) Cheeseness: I rarely feel like I want to distance myself from stuff. I'm usually just too busy to come back to things :(
  356. (07:44:35 AM) Cheeseness: I love that elevator music
  357. (07:44:40 AM) Lis: Hopefully this becomes a series of games. "The Jungle" next :)
  358. (07:44:44 AM) Cheeseness: If there's a soundtrack, can it be entirely composed of that?
  359. (07:44:47 AM) GrumpyGamer: Steam is so much better for that stuff.
  360. (07:45:03 AM) GameClubFan_795489: f**cking apple
  361. (07:45:08 AM) Cheeseness: It's not just Apple
  362. (07:45:14 AM) yama: Does that work for recording the sound?
  363. (07:45:17 AM) Cheeseness: Console people are like that to a degree as well
  364. (07:45:34 AM) yama: I dropped the recorder and dumped the crate on to the monster.
  365. (07:45:47 AM) fightclubdoll: Telltale's The Walking Dead makes episodic games seem especially exciting.
  366. (07:46:02 AM) Iiko: I too have to get away from what I do. It's usually so bad it repels me.
  367. (07:46:03 AM) GrumpyGamer: Consoles are even worse. $10,000 to do a patch.
  368. (07:46:05 AM) fightclubdoll: I also bought all the Wallace and Grommit xbla
  369. (07:46:16 AM) ReverendGumby: GrumpyGamer: Eek!
  370. (07:46:18 AM) Cheeseness: PCs for the win
  371. (07:46:25 AM) Cheeseness: I don't know why people bother with consoles to be honest
  372. (07:46:36 AM) fightclubdoll: Why do they punish developers for trying to perfect/refine their own game?
  373. (07:46:44 AM) ReverendGumby: Cheeseness: Because I can play games sitting on my couch.
  374. (07:46:48 AM) fightclubdoll: The dev already pays for the work to make the refinements.
  375. (07:46:53 AM) Cheeseness: ReverendGumby: So can I.
  376. (07:47:01 AM) Cheeseness: That's got nothing to do with having a console :b
  377. (07:47:30 AM) GrumpyGamer: Console makers are stuck in the past.
  378. (07:47:47 AM) Cheeseness: As platforms, they feel like throwbacks to me
  379. (07:47:55 AM) Cheeseness: From an era when PC hardware was less attainable
  380. (07:47:58 AM) fightclubdoll: I don't understand why they charge for patches... I don't believe games would launch all higgledy piggledy if patches were free to devs.
  381. (07:48:03 AM) Syd: The patching process for stuff on Xbox is particularly ridiculous, from what I know.
  382. (07:48:05 AM) ReverendGumby: It's an age-old manufacturing dilemma. Make something last, or make something last long enough.
  383. (07:48:05 AM) GameClubFan_795489: do you guys like the ps4?
  384. (07:48:07 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: They just want to make oney :b
  385. (07:48:14 AM) Voodoo_Lord: about that, I always wondered why there's this voice that says that patches are free on the Xbox for devs
  386. (07:48:14 AM) Cheeseness: And money
  387. (07:48:16 AM) Cheeseness: And monkey
  388. (07:48:29 AM) fightclubdoll: I love to make monkey
  389. (07:48:33 AM) ReverendGumby: Yo, ho, yo, ho...
  390. (07:48:40 AM) GameClubFan_795489: admit it: that's herman toothrot
  391. (07:48:45 AM) Syd: It's Herman Toothro- err, the hermit!
  392. (07:48:56 AM) jeremywc left the room (quit: Connection reset by peer).
  393. (07:48:57 AM) Cheeseness: I love that the Cave tells the parrot to shut up
  394. (07:49:00 AM) fightclubdoll: It's that dude I left on Monkey Island... not really.
  395. (07:49:22 AM) Syd: I love that devious laugh from the cave. He gets so much enjoyment out of this.
  396. (07:49:24 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Do you guys mean Governor Marley? :P
  397. (07:49:33 AM) Cheeseness: Otis
  398. (07:49:40 AM) yama: I rather enjoyed the puzzles on the island. =)
  399. (07:49:40 AM) fightclubdoll: Fun Fact: Stephen Stanton (The Cave) is the SAME actor that voiced Sasha Nein. <3
  400. (07:49:41 AM) Cheeseness: Notice that there are *no* flowers on this island
  401. (07:49:44 AM) GameClubFan_795489: i love monkey island
  402. (07:49:46 AM) Cheeseness: They've all been picked
  403. (07:50:22 AM) GameClubFan_795489: the cave is like a voice in a schizophrenic's head
  404. (07:50:30 AM) GameClubFan_795489: that would be a good thesis for a college paper
  405. (07:50:35 AM) Cheeseness: That "Shut up" was a bit Shatnery too
  406. (07:50:40 AM) Iiko: Shut up
  407. (07:50:41 AM) GameClubFan_800486 [547001a7@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  408. (07:50:55 AM) fightclubdoll: One day, in my secret lab, I'll clone my very own Lee Petty with the voice of Stephen Stanton.... TMI?
  409. (07:51:05 AM) Cheeseness: The background here is fantastic too
  410. (07:51:13 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: Tales of Monkey Island indeed
  411. (07:51:41 AM) Cheeseness: All of the one handed animations are neat
  412. (07:51:48 AM) fightclubdoll: :D
  413. (07:52:02 AM) fightclubdoll: Creamed Corn!
  414. (07:52:02 AM) ReverendGumby: Corn! Take the corn!
  415. (07:52:11 AM) Syd: I cannot state enough how much I love the Knight's animations
  416. (07:52:15 AM) yama: Sorry for jumping ahead but, in my first playthrough, I thought I had failed the game at the end of the island because I really tried to be as stealthy as I could. ^^:
  417. (07:52:17 AM) Syd: Also, yes, corn is essential.
  418. (07:52:25 AM) GameClubFan_795489: so... are the hillbillys feet sounds salmon slapping on linoleum?
  419. (07:52:28 AM) fightclubdoll: He has the BEST run. (the knight)
  420. (07:52:40 AM) Cheeseness: yama: I wanted to bring him along ;_;
  421. (07:53:02 AM) yama: Cheeseness, aww. I was hoping to at least take the parrot with me. ^^:
  422. (07:53:09 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, it flies off
  423. (07:53:25 AM) Cheeseness: You should be able to put it *in* the box of crackers and make off with it
  424. (07:53:28 AM) ReverendGumby: Oh, I didn't know it let you get the pipes wrong.
  425. (07:53:29 AM) yama: The DLC will feature the parrot as a playable character!
  426. (07:53:51 AM) fightclubdoll: duck feet on wet marble? sliced ham on polished granite? ...maybe all of the above, GameClubFan_795489

  430. (07:54:07 AM) salty-horse: hey!
  431. (07:54:08 AM) Cheeseness: I had something to tell you last week, but I have no idea what it was
  432. (07:54:10 AM) Cheeseness: ;_;
  433. (07:54:12 AM) salty-horse: I forgot abou this :)
  434. (07:54:17 AM) Cheeseness: Thanks for posting in #scummvm btw :)
  435. (07:54:29 AM) salty-horse: :D
  436. (07:54:51 AM) ReverendGumby: This could take a while.

  441. (07:55:46 AM) Cheeseness: I didn't notice the ladder that went down to the dynamite on my first run
  442. (07:55:48 AM) yama: Diving under the boat there will kill you. >.<;
  443. (07:55:52 AM) Cheeseness: A bratwurst?
  444. (07:55:59 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yeah
  445. (07:56:02 AM) Cheeseness: yama: Did that lots of times >_<
  446. (07:56:04 AM) Syd: Yeah, I died from going under that boat
  447. (07:56:14 AM) Cheeseness: I totally had a sausage and the bird didn't care >:C
  448. (07:56:17 AM) Syd: Got squished between the boat and the ledge
  449. (07:56:29 AM) yama: Heheh. I'm glad I'm not the only one it happened for. ;0
  450. (07:56:32 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Love this stage, it's clearly a throwback to maniac mansion
  451. (07:56:34 AM) ReverendGumby: Someone's obsessed with Frankfurters.
  452. (07:56:37 AM) salty-horse: with the island level, took me a long time to figure out the goal is moving the boat
  453. (07:56:38 AM) fightclubdoll: Oh, Polly
  454. (07:56:53 AM) ReverendGumby: They're nice people, mind you.
  455. (07:56:55 AM) fightclubdoll: The animals actually have names... that's a fun detail.
  456. (07:57:20 AM) yama: I emptied that basin before moving the boat.
  457. (07:57:34 AM) yama: I was so scared the boat would be destroyed falling off the ledge.
  458. (07:57:35 AM) Cheeseness: Voodoo_Lord: I think you mean Zack McKracken. It's clearly paying homage to that
  459. (07:57:35 AM) Syd: Same, yama
  460. (07:57:53 AM) ReverendGumby: I SO wanted to run atop the barrel to move it.
  461. (07:57:56 AM) Syd: I had actually emptied that basin before I figured out that I had to move the boat through there
  462. (07:57:57 AM) fightclubdoll: Cheeseness, You saw the story relating the characters in The Cave to the seven deadly sins, right? Great notion.
  463. (07:58:04 AM) Syd: Yay for solving puzzles out of order
  464. (07:58:07 AM) Bratwurst [50db4f6b@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  465. (07:58:08 AM) salty-horse: if you listen closely, one the water drip sound effects is a "stock" audio, and is used in many many games. For example, Kingdom O' Magic, and the AGS game Duty and Beyond
  466. (07:58:12 AM) ReverendGumby: lol
  467. (07:58:15 AM) Cheeseness: I didn't realise that the second hook was for going up and spent *ages* trying to grapple to it from on top of that wall
  468. (07:58:32 AM) Cheeseness: fightclubdoll: Seven deadly sins *in* Plato's cave! It's genius!
  469. (07:58:49 AM) yama: I always had my Adventurer on other parts of the island so I never used the hooks. >.>
  470. (07:58:51 AM) fightclubdoll: a few times, I've had a glitch where there's no FEMUR in this level....
  471. (07:59:08 AM) Bratwurst: GrumpyGamer, are you personally offended when a reviewer gives Cave a bad review?
  472. (07:59:09 AM) fightclubdoll: it happened the 1st time I played and I was stuck for hours....
  473. (07:59:11 AM) ReverendGumby: I think that's too far apart...
  474. (07:59:22 AM) ReverendGumby: Yep.
  475. (07:59:35 AM) Syd: Not quite close enough
  476. (07:59:38 AM) GrumpyGamer: No
  477. (07:59:47 AM) Cheeseness: Reviewers have poor taste
  478. (07:59:50 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  479. (07:59:55 AM) Cheeseness: Except for me
  480. (07:59:56 AM) Voodoo_Lord: lol Cheesseness
  481. (08:00:04 AM) GrumpyGamer: Monkey Island didn't get great reviews when it came out. I always remember that.
  482. (08:00:17 AM) Bratwurst: true true
  483. (08:00:18 AM) Cheeseness: Codename: Eagle didn't get great reviews ;_;
  484. (08:00:22 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Gotta have thick skin if you wanna make into the arts
  485. (08:00:27 AM) yama: GrumpyGamer, do you also remember what people gave you bad reviews?
  486. (08:00:38 AM) Bratwurst: cult classics usually get bad intial reviews and bad box office, see Fight Club
  487. (08:00:38 AM) Cheeseness: And hunt them down?
  488. (08:00:47 AM) Iiko: He's got a list :)
  489. (08:00:49 AM) fightclubdoll: I have excellent taste. As evident by my presence here.
  490. (08:00:58 AM) Syd: Some of the poorer reviews just seemed to be because of the reviewer having unrealistic expectations.
  491. (08:01:09 AM) Cheeseness: I was here before it was cool
  492. (08:01:11 AM) Voodoo_Lord: GrumpyGamer, do you write down their address and where they work?
  493. (08:01:13 AM) fightclubdoll: I know a lot about Fight Club
  494. (08:01:32 AM) ReverendGumby: fightclubdoll: Funny that.
  495. (08:01:38 AM) Voodoo_Lord: and dolls I suppose
  496. (08:01:47 AM) GameClubFan_287721 [027e4adf@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  497. (08:01:47 AM) Voodoo_Lord: and Fight Club dolls
  498. (08:02:03 AM) Bratwurst: I also know a lot about Fight Club
  499. (08:02:08 AM) salty-horse: the volcano in the background is impressive
  500. (08:02:12 AM) Bratwurst: I even wrote a college paper on it
  501. (08:02:13 AM) Cheeseness: Man, so many first rules being broken
  502. (08:02:16 AM) Bratwurst: my BA thesis actually
  503. (08:02:18 AM) Iiko: What about Club dolls?
  504. (08:02:22 AM) GameClubFan_287721 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  505. (08:02:24 AM) fightclubdoll: I am Jill's knowledge of Fight Club
  506. (08:02:44 AM) yama: I unintentionally solved the parrot puzzle. :D
  507. (08:03:04 AM) Bratwurst: good for you, fightclubdoll
  508. (08:03:33 AM) salty-horse: the cross pipe was hard to find
  509. (08:03:53 AM) Cheeseness: You go up there for the picture though
  510. (08:03:53 AM) ReverendGumby: I appreciate that characters don't have to recover objects after dying.
  511. (08:04:16 AM) salty-horse: it's still hard to spot it :) I got stuck because of it for a good 30 minutes IIRC
  512. (08:04:20 AM) fightclubdoll: (I could have used "girl" ... but I used "doll" ..I didn't want to be mistaken for a guy all the time, that's all.)
  513. (08:04:39 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Do you feel that there's value in getting stuck (that it somehow enriches the experience of playing a game - in particular an adventure game)?
  514. (08:04:41 AM) Frodofeet left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  515. (08:04:45 AM) fightclubdoll: DOH
  516. (08:04:52 AM) fightclubdoll: quit dying!
  517. (08:04:52 AM) Voodoo_Lord: is there someone who would think "fightclubgirl" is a guy? :D
  518. (08:04:53 AM) yama: Aww. Haha.
  519. (08:04:56 AM) GameClubFan_429032 [3294b947@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  520. (08:05:03 AM) GrumpyGamer: I do. That's part of the fun, as long as the puzzle is fair.
  521. (08:05:16 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Second rule!
  522. (08:05:16 AM) salty-horse: Cheeseness, I like thinking about puzzles when away from the computer, and getting an AHA. then I can't wait to get home and try it
  523. (08:05:26 AM) GameClubFan_429032 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  524. (08:05:26 AM) Voodoo_Lord: (it was the second was it?)
  525. (08:05:29 AM) salty-horse: GrumpyGamer, have you watched the Get Lamp documentary about text adventures?
  526. (08:05:35 AM) Syd: It's satisfying to finally solve a puzzle that ends up making sense. It's annoying to solve a puzzle that makes no sense, even in retrospect.
  527. (08:05:39 AM) fightclubdoll: I mean I wanted to tag something to the end to indicate that I wasn't a guy, it just happens I used "doll"
  528. (08:05:41 AM) Cheeseness: I think there's definitely a greater reward/payoff when something forces you to stop and think
  529. (08:05:42 AM) GrumpyGamer: I have not.
  530. (08:05:54 AM) fightclubdoll: for better or worse, I'm stuck with it now.
  531. (08:05:54 AM) yama: Figuring out the solution to a puzzle when away from the game is a great feeling. :D
  532. (08:05:58 AM) Cheeseness: (and I personally love a game that challenges me)
  533. (08:06:15 AM) fightclubdoll: yama SO TRUE
  534. (08:06:19 AM) ReverendGumby: Chess wizard? Heh.
  535. (08:06:31 AM) Bratwurst: GrumpyGamer, will you ever do an AMA on Reddit? I am the creator of Monkey Island, AMA
  536. (08:06:39 AM) ReverendGumby: I'm amazed there's still dialog I haven't heard.
  537. (08:06:56 AM) fightclubdoll: As one reviewer said "The Cave sometimes makes you feel stupid... other times it lets you feel like a genius"
  538. (08:07:01 AM) GrumpyGamer: They seem like a lot of work.
  539. (08:07:03 AM) Syd: One thing I loved about the puzzle design in LucasArts adventures was that they were usually well rooted in logic, or at least the logic that the game clearly presents to the player.
  540. (08:07:03 AM) Naron: GrumpyGamer: Where do you get inspiration for your characters?
  541. (08:07:26 AM) Cheeseness: I asked Dan Connors the same question last year (was it last year?). He talked about how he waned to have games intelligently determine whether you were making progress and leave you alone, or give you a hint if it thought you were frustrated (he admitted Telltale haven't gotten there yet).
  542. (08:07:29 AM) yama: Syd, like the monkey wrench? ;)
  543. (08:07:38 AM) fightclubdoll: Hermit
  544. (08:07:42 AM) Bratwurst: Is it the same voice as Herman Toothrot in MI?
  545. (08:07:48 AM) Bratwurst: sounds similar
  546. (08:07:48 AM) salty-horse: most of the "getting stuck in games" for long periods that I can remember comes from missed items or actions I had no idea I could perform. In discworld 2, you can use a world object twice. Once by "using" it, and another by using an item on it.
  547. (08:07:50 AM) ReverendGumby: Yay classical musical references!
  548. (08:08:01 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: You could be like that president guy who answered 8 questions and that was it
  549. (08:08:06 AM) puxlit [6eaf05e9@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  550. (08:08:07 AM) Syd: That would be MI2's "That one puzzle," at least for people that aren't aware of the whole "monkey wrench" thing.
  551. (08:08:15 AM) salty-horse: Cheeseness, I thought the sam and max games had a good hint system. I turned it on only when I needed a hint, and max pointed me where I had things left to do
  552. (08:08:22 AM) fightclubdoll: do a Jedi Mind Meld
  553. (08:08:28 AM) Cheeseness: lol
  554. salamanderrake salty-horse
  555. (08:08:39 AM) Cheeseness: salty-horse: I don't like to be tempted by hints to be honest
  556. (08:08:40 AM) Bratwurst: people on Reddit would only ask Ron what the secret of Monkey Island s
  557. (08:08:50 AM) Cheeseness: If I could, I'd turn the internets off when playing a game
  558. (08:09:14 AM) Bratwurst: btw, what is the secret of monkey island?
  559. (08:09:15 AM) fightclubdoll: I like hints that misdirect sometimes... those are fun... except when they're not. lol
  560. (08:09:21 AM) Cheeseness: heh
  561. (08:09:27 AM) ReverendGumby: Cheeseness: Advantage console. :)
  562. (08:09:46 AM) Syd: It takes a bit of determination, but I usually manage to stay away from guides, even if I'm horribly stuck. It's just not satisfying to play through an adventure game using a guide.
  563. (08:09:56 AM) Cheeseness: ReverendGumby: Then I wouldn't be able to alt+tab between the game and my work. No thanks.
  564. (08:09:56 AM) Iiko: Bratwurst: you're cunning
  565. (08:10:06 AM) fightclubdoll: See Spanky Bark.... Bark Spanky Bark ....
  566. (08:10:35 AM) MetelStar [62771946@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  567. (08:10:46 AM) fightclubdoll: Don't get wet... and don't die/fall
  568. (08:10:59 AM) Cheeseness: Sit Spanky Sit
  569. (08:11:00 AM) herberck [4d026d1b@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  570. (08:11:01 AM) Cheeseness: Good dog
  571. (08:11:03 AM) Bratwurst: that's what she said
  572. (08:11:04 AM) yama: I thought I had to carry the femur with the same character that had the parrot on its shoulder. -.-;
  573. (08:11:13 AM) fightclubdoll: :D
  574. (08:11:24 AM) herberck: loool i was on twitch chat and nobody was answering and i thought wtf
  575. (08:11:25 AM) salty-horse: GrumpyGamer, MI2 had a lot of default "Nice X" descriptions when looking at things. If you had no time constraints on the project, did you intend to fill every one of those with funny descriptions? For example, I think the "Ben There, Dan That!" games have a response for every item+verb/item combination, which can provide more entertainment
  576. (08:11:28 AM) Cheeseness: yama: I did that too first time
  577. (08:11:29 AM) fightclubdoll: I *tried* to take the parrot with me
  578. (08:11:56 AM) ReverendGumby: Nice "sunset".
  579. (08:12:04 AM) Syd: BTDT's huge number of possible descriptions becomes a problem as soon as voice acting is thrown in the mix.
  580. (08:12:10 AM) fightclubdoll: beautiful cave background
  581. (08:12:11 AM) Bratwurst: a sunset and an island in a cave... wtf
  582. (08:12:17 AM) fightclubdoll: and scene
  583. (08:12:19 AM) salty-horse: MI2 had no voice acting, Syd :)
  584. (08:12:20 AM) herberck: is this using ssaa 4x? it looks really nice
  585. (08:12:26 AM) Syd: Just saying, for future adventure games.
  586. (08:12:31 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Have you played either of the Ben and Dan games? They're fans of yours, I believe :)
  587. (08:12:44 AM) Syd: MI2 probably didn't have enough space on those floppies for that many descriptions. :P
  588. (08:12:56 AM) Bratwurst: anyone played deathspank?
  589. (08:12:58 AM) fightclubdoll: They have been SO BUSY in your absence... gotta love the changes at the beginning.
  590. (08:13:00 AM) GrumpyGamer: There was no sound card that could do it.
  591. (08:13:05 AM) yama: How many floppies did MI2 come on anyway?
  592. (08:13:07 AM) salty-horse: Syd, agreed. text gives you tons of flexibility, even in terms of changing things right before shipping
  593. (08:13:22 AM) GrumpyGamer: The SoundBlaster had just come out and it could do some very limited digital audio.
  594. (08:13:37 AM) GrumpyGamer: But most people had Adlib cards.
  595. (08:13:41 AM) herberck: will The Cave also get the new amazing 60 fps technology from brtual legend?
  596. (08:13:43 AM) Lis: That clerk should have Tim Schafer's face.
  597. (08:14:02 AM) fightclubdoll: Laura from the DF gift shop
  598. (08:14:17 AM) salty-horse: that prospector sure is happy
  599. (08:14:19 AM) fightclubdoll: she's there in spirit... I feel it
  600. (08:14:20 AM) Syd: Someone (was it Nathan) from DF said that they plan on patching their other PC games (sans Iron Brigade due to the mess with GFWL) with unlocked FPS.
  601. (08:14:28 AM) GrumpyGamer: Yeah, Laura… that would have been funny.
  602. (08:14:31 AM) ReverendGumby: GrumpyGamer: I just had a PC speaker, and was thrilled to hear MUSE play music on it.
  603. (08:14:33 AM) yama: The way music is handled in MI2 still amazes me to this day.
  604. (08:14:43 AM) GrumpyGamer: iMuse was amazing.
  605. (08:14:50 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah
  606. (08:14:52 AM) GameClubFan_815976 [574a48fe@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  607. (08:15:00 AM) herberck: Im playing Monkey Island 2 special edition at the moment and the puzzles are way too hard for me lol
  608. (08:15:01 AM) Cheeseness: It seemed to be handled with love and care for the special edition of Monkey 2 as well
  609. (08:15:15 AM) fightclubdoll: I still feel badly about the crystal beast... maybe it's the way the Cave rubbed it in "the last of a dying species"
  610. (08:15:16 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: When you came up with SCUMM, did you expect that people would still be working with/on it 25 years later?
  611. (08:15:16 AM) salty-horse: CMI's pirate song was also impressive
  612. (08:15:28 AM) Cheeseness: (I think we have one or two ScummVM people in here)
  613. (08:15:29 AM) GrumpyGamer: Reviewers would bitch about the puzzles in MI if it was relased today.
  614. (08:15:47 AM) fightclubdoll: TRUE
  615. (08:15:50 AM) GrumpyGamer: No, it was just to get Maniac Mansion done without getting fired.
  616. (08:15:52 AM) ReverendGumby: Who makes a game for reviewers?
  617. (08:15:53 AM) salty-horse: Cheeseness, no one is working "with it" really as far as I'm aware
  618. (08:15:57 AM) yama: Heh heh. People have no patience today.
  619. (08:15:58 AM) Voodoo_Lord: oh god fucking true
  620. salamanderrake salty-horse
  621. (08:16:14 AM) Voodoo_Lord: Damn spoonfeeding
  622. (08:16:28 AM) Syd: Now for the ending. There's two endings for each character, but it's not obvious that there's a good ending.
  623. (08:16:28 AM) Cheeseness: salty-horse: I was meaning more from the perspective of maintaining/tweaking the ScummVM engine
  624. (08:16:31 AM) fightclubdoll: Bad naughty Knight
  625. (08:16:34 AM) MetelStar: You know, I've been thinking... the clerk seems to be rather fine with the spelunkers stealing from others... I think that man is in fact The Cave's representation of...
  626. (08:16:38 AM) MetelStar: The mummified remains of Abraham Lincoln.
  627. (08:17:05 AM) fightclubdoll: Rod Sterling should suddenly appear to tell the Knight now naughty he was.
  628. (08:17:14 AM) Syd: I had seen some reviewers upset about the "downer endings" for The Cave, completely unaware that they had the option to get a better ending.
  629. (08:17:14 AM) fightclubdoll: Don't do it!
  630. (08:17:22 AM) ReverendGumby: Will they never learn?
  631. (08:17:24 AM) fightclubdoll: Bad bad Explorer
  632. (08:17:36 AM) salty-horse: how come the knight is so scared if he can turn invincible?
  633. (08:17:37 AM) fightclubdoll: Alas....
  634. (08:17:37 AM) yama: Syd, I found out about that with a first-time character after I had brought a second-time one through with a second bad ending. >.<
  635. (08:17:46 AM) Lis: I "stole" a complete set of the cave figurines yesterday.
  636. (08:17:51 AM) fightclubdoll: Make the last one do the the right thing
  637. (08:17:53 AM) Lis: True story.
  638. (08:18:03 AM) herberck: i hope there will be DLC for this game with 6 new characters or so or 3 if thats too much
  639. (08:18:04 AM) fightclubdoll: GIVE IT BACK!!!! TIME TRAVELER
  640. (08:18:10 AM) Voodoo_Lord: GrumpyGamer, thinking about MI, a question returned to mind from long ago... why was LeChuck's coat blue in the bonedance scene?
  641. (08:18:10 AM) fightclubdoll: YES
  642. (08:18:22 AM) Syd: The time traveler at least had some second thoughts
  643. (08:18:24 AM) Cheeseness: Woo!
  644. (08:18:25 AM) Syd: Good time traveler
  645. (08:18:29 AM) Voodoo_Lord: yeah, I'd like to see the witch
  646. (08:18:30 AM) Cheeseness: Time Traveler <3
  647. (08:18:32 AM) GrumpyGamer: Why are their quotes around "stole"?
  648. (08:18:35 AM) ReverendGumby: What was the price tag? "Eternal damnation?"
  649. (08:18:38 AM) fightclubdoll: cue choir
  650. (08:18:42 AM) fightclubdoll: YAY
  651. (08:18:43 AM) GrumpyGamer: The Witch was a great character.
  652. (08:18:54 AM) Cheeseness: Alright everybody, if you could take three game designers into The Cave, who would they be?
  653. (08:18:55 AM) herberck: put her in :)
  654. (08:19:09 AM) fightclubdoll: I smell DLC .. *nudge nudge*
  655. (08:19:20 AM) Lis: well. It's a long story. Let's say a got some through work.
  656. (08:19:23 AM) Syd: Tim, Ron, and Dave. Heh.
  657. (08:19:25 AM) herberck: this game is very awesome
  658. (08:19:36 AM) Syd: Take the original Monkey Island trio in there
  659. (08:19:40 AM) salty-horse: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/129351/the-cave
  660. (08:19:49 AM) fightclubdoll: SHE MADE IT! :)
  661. (08:20:05 AM) herberck: oh no is it over?
  662. (08:20:09 AM) herberck: i just tuned in and now its ending?!
  663. (08:20:13 AM) herberck: another run please
  664. (08:20:38 AM) yama: I was expecting funny one-liners after the credits. ;_;
  665. (08:20:41 AM) salty-horse: there's a "(that's me)" missing after "there is no hiding from .. the cave"
  666. (08:20:43 AM) fightclubdoll: THEN, the ones that chose "badly" will be there in the next playthru... at least their BONES will be muahahaha
  667. (08:20:47 AM) Cheeseness: I'd consider taking Terry Cavanagh, Porpentine and umm umm Steve Purcel
  668. (08:20:47 AM) Voodoo_Lord: GrumpyGamer, is there some art of her? I'd like to see what she was supposed to be like. A kind of gothic character?
  669. (08:21:10 AM) GrumpyGamer: There is. Maybe I'll post it on my site tomorrow.
  670. (08:21:15 AM) Cheeseness: Syd: Somehow I had a feeling you'd suggest that
  671. (08:21:17 AM) Syd: Ooh, neat
  672. (08:21:19 AM) Bratwurst: michael wood is online
  673. (08:21:19 AM) Cheeseness: GrumpyGamer: Ooooooh, awesome :D
  674. (08:21:22 AM) Syd: :D
  675. (08:21:23 AM) Voodoo_Lord: cool, thanks!
  676. (08:21:24 AM) GrumpyGamer: She didn't get out of concept phase.
  677. (08:21:25 AM) yama: Yay! I'd like to see it, too.
  678. (08:21:31 AM) herberck: Hey Ron what do you think of Roger Ebert?
  679. (08:21:32 AM) fightclubdoll: Remember the critic from Gloria's mind in Psychonauts? I'd like to take him through The Cave
  680. (08:21:44 AM) Cheeseness: For anybody who doesn't know (shame on you), GrumpyGamer's website is http://grumpygamer.com/
  681. (08:21:47 AM) Syd: He'd complain. Constantly.
  682. (08:22:04 AM) Syd: And he'd tell the Cave that he's a bad narrator.
  683. (08:22:05 AM) GrumpyGamer: Thanks for play that guys!
  684. (08:22:10 AM) ReverendGumby: "chickpea"?
  685. (08:22:16 AM) Syd: Thanks for joining us, GrumpyGamer!
  686. (08:22:20 AM) Cheeseness: Thanks for making awesome games, GrumpyGamer :D
