  1. >It’s morning; 6 a.m.
  2. >You’ve been dozing off for a few minutes, but never enough to fully fall asleep.
  3. >The lag from travel and time change has taken a toll on your body’s internal clock.
  4. >The sun peaks out from the obstructed horizon of buildings.
  5. >The city is slowly starting to spring back to life after the rain from the previous night.
  6. >There are rain drops on the window that will soon dry up and be forgotten by the citizens.
  7. >You wonder if Rarity has forgotten you; sometimes it seems so. During the middle of the night you crawled into the king sized bed with her.
  8. >She never seemed to notice. You scooted closer to her and put your arm around her, her name gently escaping your lips in the silent suite.
  9. >She never responded. You were forced to return to the chair and the blanket filled with past memories.
  10. >You pry the curtains open a little more to marvel at the urban sprawl of Manehattan once again.
  11. >It’s so vast; nearly endless it seems.
  12. >You run your fingers through your hair and massage your head.
  13. >With little sleep, your body never got a chance to recharge.
  14. >You feel drained, thin, and forgotten.
  15. >Rarity rolls over in the bed behind you. The outside light is bothering her.
  16. >You slide the curtain halfway closed for her; a small compromise for the two of you.
  17. >The room is now partially lit from the sunlight seeping through the opaque curtains. Rarity snuggles into herself and throws the blanket off of her head.
  18. >A siren blares in the distance. A pony in the city must feel dangerous in the dawn of a new day.
  19. >You slowly walk over to the bed and quietly lay in it, trying not to stir Rarity too much.
  20. >You nestle into the mattress. Rarity faces away from you, towards the wall.
  21. >You and Rarity are on opposite sides in what feels like miles and millions of mixed feelings between the two of you.
  22. >It’s times like this you think to yourself: how did things get to be like this?
  23. >Are you a bad person? Is she bored of you? You’d at least like her to say it to you instead of relentlessly making you feel it in your heart and reduce the strain on your brain.
  24. >You lay next to Rarity; hardly next to her like you’d like, but near her.
  25. >You stare at the wall too and ponder what she sees in it. Why doesn’t she look into your eyes anymore like she used to?
  26. >She must have a lot on her mind, you guess.
  27. >Rarity is still in her slumber. You’re wide awake.
  28. >It feels like lying next to an alien from another world. She seems unpredictable and difficult to read.
  29. >Maybe you’re the alien instead.
  30. >You raise your arm and go to put it around your sleeping lover, but you instead stop and hover your arm a few inches above her and retract it.
  31. >She should sleep instead.
  32. >As you pull your arm back, Rarity stirs in the bed as she awakes.
  33. >She lets out a few moans as she extends her arms to stretch.
  34. >Now is as good a time as any.
  35. >You move closer to her, pressing your body in the same shape as hers…becoming one with her.
  36. >You trace your flattened hand across the gentle curvature of her sides.
  37. Good morning…
  38. >Rarity stops stretching.
  39. >”I’ve got to go to the photo shoot today…”
  40. >For her new clothing line, the whole reason the two of you are here.
  41. I know.
  42. >You slip your hand under her arms and bring her in close to you to hold her; to feel a sense of companionship in the large suite, and the city itself.
  43. >Rarity turns her head a little to stare at the ceiling. She directs her words to you.
  44. >”Anon?”
  45. Yes?
  46. >”Are you going to come with me?”
  47. >You hadn’t thought about it. On one hand you’re immensely proud of Rarity and all her accomplishments, but on the other hand it makes you feel so out of place and strange to be in the presence of her assistants and supervisors all clad in strange designer fads.
  48. >You think a little harder at the question.
  49. No. I think I’ll just stay here.
  50. >Rarity fully rolls over to face you.
  51. >Sometimes you forget what it’s like to get lost in her ocean-hued eyes. It’s something the two of you don’t do anymore.
  52. >You slowly scoot a little closer to her and comb her mane with your fingers.
  53. You go ahead; it’s work. I’ll just stay here and find something to do.
  54. >”Are you sure? You’re welcome to tag along.”
  55. >Tag along.
  56. No, you go ahead. I don’t want to embarrass you or anything.
  57. >Your voice is gentle and sweet. It gilds the truth you feel inside. You don’t think Rarity notices though.
  58. >Rarity shuts her eyes and moves her head under yours.
  59. >You rest your chin on her mane.
  60. >”Whatever you say, Anon.”
  61. >You stop stroking her and pat her back before retracting your hand.
  62. >The two of you lay in silence for a few moments. Then, Rarity sniffs your shirt before pulling away in disgust.
  63. >She smells the cigarette smoke.
  64. >Silently, you get up from the bed and go to the bathroom.
  65. >The bathroom itself is cavernous, almost as big as the room itself.
  66. >Marble tiles, multiple sinks, mirrors reflecting each other, and a large tiled bathtub as the centerpiece.
  67. >You undress and head to the modest shower.
  68. >Heartbroken, you turn the valves to release the water.
  69. OUCH!
  70. >You jump back from the flood of steamy water on your waist.
  71. >Sometimes you forget ponys are shorter than you.
  72. >You adjust the shower head to bring it to the highest position, but it barely covers your chest.
  73. >After awkwardly bending down to wash up, you return to the room to find Rarity ready for the day.
  74. >She’s already dressed her mane up in a bun.
  75. >You guess she’d rather be dirty than shower with you.
  76. >”Oh, Anonymous I’m terribly sorry, but the studio just called and I must be going right away. Be a dear and carry my bags to the limo?”
  77. >You look at the luggage and back at her.
  78. Sure.
  79. >You slip on some clothes and struggle to the elevator.
  80. >You and Rarity silently ride to the bottom.
  81. >There are stallions in suits, a mother and her young filly fidgeting with a toy, and a mare.
  82. >Is it the same one from last night?
  83. >You try not to stare but you do anyways.
  84. >The mare lets out a long yawn.
  85. >At the end of it you hear her voice.
  86. >It’s her.
  87. >As the elevator dings at the bottom floor, you stroll the luggage to the lobby where Rarity is greeted by the lobby staff eager to help her out.
  88. >”Anonymous, the staff can take it from here. Thanks.”
  89. >The concierge takes the bags from you and whisks it away to the front door.
  90. >Rarity is on her phone jabbering to some high-profile citizen.
  91. >You are left standing alone in the bustling lobby watching her walk away.
  92. Goodbye, I guess…
  93. >You look around you. Nobody seems to notice you.
  94. >You head back up the elevator to your room.
  95. >If you’re going to feel alone, you might as well be alone in a room.
  96. >Seems more fitting.
  97. >You sit at the foot of the mattress and turn on the t.v. and flip through the channels of pony shows.
  98. >A cooking show. Advertisements for juicers. A romance movie.
  99. >You pause your surfing and watch it for a moment.
  100. >The two lovers embrace one another and kiss.
  101. >You ascend up one channel.
  102. >Morning talk shows.
  103. >”And coming up on Good Morning Equestria, we’re very excited to have her on the program, fashion designer Rarity. If you haven’t heard her name before, soon you won’t be able to get away from it. Stick around all you young mares watching at home; her designs are going to take the country by storm.”
  104. >The mare on television flips through pictures of Rarity’s earlier designs. They’re contemporary compared to what she wants to do now. Rarity says she wants to distance herself from the old stuff and really break some new ground.
  105. >You think pants and shirts are just fine.
  106. >The talk show stops for a commercial advertising a kite flying event in the Manehattan Park in an hour.
  107. >It looks fun.
  108. >You properly dress yourself and head outside into the swirling city.
  109. >It’s not so cold today, but windy enough for kites for sure.
  110. >You wander the streets until you find the subway.
  111. >You examine the routes on the map stuck to the walls. You take the “A” train to the park.
  112. >As you squeeze into the crowded train car you notice you’re the only one standing, towering over all the colorful ponys around you.
  113. >Some stare. Others go about their business.
  114. >A pair of unicorns are speaking what sounds like French behind you and giggling.
  115. >They’re probably talking about you.
  116. >You depart the train and rise from the underground. The wind blows some browning leaves down the steps.
  117. >The air here isn’t as smoggy. The trees filter it out pretty well.
  118. >There’s a sea of people around you as you stare skyward at the kites sitting motionless above you.
  119. >There’s a group of reporters taking photographs and jotting down notes.
  120. >Everyone is in awe, even you.
  121. >You’d like to be up there too, away from this place.
  122. >Being alone is better than feeling alienated.
  123. >You look at the group of journalists again.
  124. >The blue unicorn from the hotel is there with them.
  125. >She’s talking to a young pegasus kite flyer.
  126. >The mare makes a joke as the kite pilot laughs as she joins in too.
  127. >You haven't laughed in ages it seems.
  128. >Just then, you see her waving at you.
  129. >You nervously wave back to her.
  130. >She giggles back at you and looks above again.
  131. >You look upwards again too.
  132. >Suddenly it doesn’t seem so lonely up there. At least there’s a nice person enjoying the emptiness of the sky with you.
  133. >You return to the suite to find Rarity still hasn’t returned.
  134. >You go to the bathroom sink and run some hot water and look at your sleep-deprived eyes and stubble of facial hair.
  135. >You cup the warm water in your hands and splash it on your chin and cheeks and carefully shave your face, shedding the past and trying to become reborn anew.
  136. >Rarity used to prefer you being cleanly shaven. Now she doesn’t seem to care what you do…about anything.
  137. >You run your fingers through your hair.
  138. >If you got a haircut would she notice?
  139. >Probably not.
  140. >You return to the room and read the brochures the room packed for you.
  141. >Nothing special or especially interesting.
  142. >A few hours later, you gain an intimate knowledge on where to get the best pizza in the city in 3 different locations.
  143. >Rarity enters the room.
  144. >The bell hops help bring her bags in while you sit on the bed reading about a theater.
  145. >”Oh, Anonymous…I’m sorry I wasn’t back sooner. My agent told me I was requested for another television show! Isn’t that just marvelous?”
  146. >Seems sudden.
  147. That’s nice. When is it?
  148. >”Oh, Friday I believe. I’m not sure if I’m going to do it. I might cancel to keep up my mystique. Plus, we’d have to stay in this dreadful hotel room until Friday.”
  149. Friday? Oh.
  150. >She goes on and on about the praise she got after unveiling some of her new designs on the morning show.
  151. That’s great…I’m really happy for you.
  152. >You watch some evening news coverage of the kite flying on the bed.
  153. >Rarity watches the show too.
  154. >”Oh, kites? Hmm…seems a little boring to me. Who wants to stand outside in this wind and get their hair all messed up?”
  155. >You shrug.
  156. I liked it. It was fun.
  157. >Rarity shudders.
  158. >”Standing in that mud all day near strangers? Dreadful.”
  159. >You turn the channel and toss the remote on the bed and cross your arms.
  160. >Rarity stares at you with confusion.
  161. >You don’t know why she is…surely it’s not because she notices your lack of facial hair.
  162. >Silence as she continues to stare at you.
  163. >You look at her.
  164. What?
  165. >”Well, Anonymous, that’s what I’d like to know. What’s the matter?”
  166. I don’t know. Nothing I guess. I just don’t feel like doing anything.
  167. >Rarity huffs.
  168. >”Well, I’m going to meet some clients in the lounge to discuss some business affairs. You’re welcome to join us if you want.”
  169. >Rarity gets off the bed to shower and get ready.
  170. >Do you want to go? Not really.
  171. >But you’re hungry and you could use a drink.
  172. >In an hour, you’re in the lounge sitting with Rarity and her friends.
  173. >They laugh and make fun of the lounge patrons’ outfits.
  174. >You sit at the table in silence and sip your drink.
  175. >You look around at the makeup of hotel visitors.
  176. >They’re posh and high society types.
  177. >The stallion to your left nudges you.
  178. >”That’s some funky getup you have.”
  179. >You look down at your outfit.
  180. It’s just a t shirt and jeans.
  181. >That’s out of style?
  182. >He laughs at you.
  183. >”Exactly. Rarity, where did you find this guy?”
  184. >In your irritation you reach for your lighter and cigarettes.
  185. >You look at Rarity. You want her to see you light it.
  186. >She never looks at you.
  187. >You take a drag and turn your head to blow the smoke away.
  188. >You see the blue unicorn sitting at the bar.
  189. >She looks distraught.
  190. >A waiter passes by.
  191. Excuse me; could you give that mare over there a new glass of whatever she’s drinking?
  192. >”Certainly, sir.”
  193. >You watch the waiter retrieve the drink and present it to the unicorn. He points to you.
  194. >Her face becomes happier.
  195. >She waves to you before bringing the glass to her lips.
  196. >You smile and wave back. At least you can still make someone happy.
  197. >Rarity and her friends are becoming too noisy for you.
  198. >You turn to your girlfriend.
  199. Hey, I’m gonna go back upstairs.
  200. >She doesn’t seem to notice.
  201. Goodbye. Have fun.
  202. >You rise from the table. You put out your cigarette with force.
  203. >As you make your way to the elevator you make an effort to walk near the unicorn.
  204. >You slow your pace as you cross her path.
  205. Enjoy.
  206. >She smiles happily from one corner of her mouth.
  207. >”Thanks.”
  208. >You enter the elevator.
  209. >In the back of the room you can see Rarity and her friends laughing.
  210. >It doesn’t seem like she needs you.
  211. >The doors start to close as you look at the mare you sent the drink to.
  212. >You look into her eyes.
  213. >She raises the drink as you both smile to each other before the sliding metal obstructs your view.
  214. >You return to the room and try to fall asleep in the bed alone.
