  4. “Is that it?” Diy asked as she pointed out the front of the shuttle, “Is that your ship?”
  5.
  6. Bardex held a hand out as if to offer it up, “That’s her, the Crimson Wraith.”
  7.
  8. She could tell he was proud of that name, even without seeing the grin on his red face. She would let him have that. Maybe the ship, a growing elongated shape on the horizon, had a long history that got it that name. The alternative was her growing suspicion that Bardex just liked bright colors.
  9.
  10. “I’m going to put her down,” Bardex said, “Relax, you’re making me nervous.”
  11.
  12. She was feeling nervous. She didn’t realize it at first, but it was true. As Diy sat back in her seat, she watched the Crimson Wraith. It was long, with one side being more like a disc, and the other a handle, like a flipped pan. The whole body was painted red and a bright orange. Whatever Bardex did, he didn’t want anyone to miss him doing it.
  13.
  14. They put the shuttle down, and Diy went to the door. Bardex took his time, grabbing his helmet, a wide-shouldered jacket, and a side bag. The door opened, and they walked over to the ship. She didn’t realize how much it was going to dwarf her. The shuttle was cramped. It was just enough space to fit the cockpit, a table connected to it, and a small bed. It didn’t even fit much on it, there was a space beneath it that held on to Bardex’s swoopbike and the containers he cared about so much.
  15.
  16. The Crimson Wraith on the other hand, was large. There was a gun beneath, tucked close to the underbelly of the pan-shaped ship. The ship held itself up with large landing struts, and a wide ramp was lowered down for them to walk up and inside.
  17.
  18. They walked up the ramp, Diy a step behind him. As they neared the top, to enter the hold of the ship, there was a woman standing there. Her arms were locked behind her back, her posture stiff. It was a human, with peach skin that had one major blemish, a wide red scar that crawled up the left of her neck before tapering off at her chin. Her eyes were a dark blue, and her hair that light blonde hue that humans seem to love so much. Diy couldn’t help but think she had already cross the woman. Her lips were pressed into a line, and her stance was stiff.
  19.
  20. “Don’t mind the buckethead,” Bardex said as he got to the top.
  21.
  22. The woman’s eyes swept over to the Zeltron, “Welcome back, Captain.”
  23.
  24. “See,” Bardex said with a shrug, “She works for me.”
  25.
  26. The woman, chilling down to her mostly black and brown attire, which was pressed neater than anything Diy had ever worn, looked back at Diy.
  27.
  28. “I see you’ve brought home company for the night,” The woman said.
  29.
  30. Bardex smirked, and looked at Diy. Diy felt a lump in her chest. She knew what those eyes meant, but it wasn’t the same. If some gamorrean looked at her like that, she would have to fight back the urge to heave up her meal. With Bardex, she could feel waves of love coming off of him. Maybe it wasn’t love, but she gave him a sheepish smile either way.
  31.
  32. “Should I prepare your quarters?” The ‘buckethead’ said with disdain.
  33.
  34. “What? No,” Bardex said as he turned to the woman, “Maddy, I got it. That furball actually had it sitting in a backroom with his trash like some kind of Toydarian hack. Go pull the cargo in, and hook the shuttle up, and I’ll get this baby ready to fly before Donda realizes we even made planetside.”
  35.
  36. Bardex snapped his fingers and practically danced his way further into the ship.
  37.
  38. Maddy, as Bardex called her, was surprised enough for her expression to lighten up.
  39.
  40. Then she made a double take at Diy, “But what about the whore, Captain?”
  41.
  42. Bardex’s voice echoed from down a corridor, “Be nice Maddy.”
  43.
  44. She let out a long sigh, and shook her head.
  45.
  46. This woman was something different. Actually, Diy knew exactly what Maddy reminded her of. Occasionally, guests from the galactic empire would stop by Nal Hutta, and it wasn’t uncommon for Spettatha to bring one in as a guest. She never knew what they were talking about. They were usually men in all gray, hair tucked under their hats, with stern expressions. While Maddy was no man, she had their demeanor, and her high collar and hat was close to the mark.
  47.
  48. Maybe it would be best to stay out of her way, at least for the time being. Diy shrunk away as best she could, keeping her eyes down, and her arms in close to her chest. She nodded to Maddy as she passed by.
  49.
  50. “I’m Diy,” She said, “it was nice meeting you Maddy.”
  51.
  52. Maddy’s arm shot out and stopped Diy in her path.
  53.
  54. “You will call me Lieutenant Endrun,” Maddy said, “Unless I give you permission to refer to me as Lieutenant Madelen Endrun, do you understand?”
  55.
  56. Diy wanted to respond, but she didn’t understand. She looked to where Bardex vanished to, and then back at the blonde and her tightly coiled braid of hair.
  57.
  58. “But,” Diy stammered, “He called you…”
  59.
  60. “What the Captain calls me is between me and him,” Lt. Endrun said, “Do as your betters tell you, and nothing more. Is that difficult to understand?”
  61.
  62. Diy shook her head no.
  63.
  64. “Excellent,” Endrun said, “Now turn around and go collect the cargo, the Captain wants to takeoff.”
  65.
  66. Diy didn’t get to see anything but the cargo hold of the ship for the next while, as Endrun barked orders at her, and chastised her for not knowing how to operate the gravlift on cargo containers. Then she was instructed to stand and watch as Endrun docked the shuttle to the Crimson Wraith.
  67.
  68. She was hungry, tired, and she wanted to know where Bardex was.
  69.
  70. Lt. Endrun came back up the ramp, removing a pair of gloves as she walked. “You may go inside now. Tell the Captain we are ready to leave.”
  71.
  72. Diy tried not to look sad as she nodded. If she really did know Endrun’s type, that would only make her angrier. She turned and found the main corridor, a series of doors down what she assumed had to be the handle of the ship. At one point there was a ladder that headed down, and Diy could hear yelling in an alien tongue.
  73.
  74. Quick clinks rose up the ladder, and Diy gasped and took a step back. A small chalk-white head poked up, and then turned to look at her with large black eyes.
  75.
  76. “You get back down here and fix it,” Bardex yelled from below, “Or do you want to be sitting pretty when Donda arrives?”
  77.
  78. Four arms pulled the little alien up before he jumped onto the same floor as Diy. He barely came up to her stomach, and was wrapped in tight brown leather, black splotches on random parts of his otherwise white skin. He made a clicking noise at Diy, and smiled at her.
  79.
  80. “Oh,” Diy said.
  81.
  82. The Xextos said something in his own tongue, and put his bottom two arms on his waist. She didn’t need a translation to know when someone was checking her out.
  83.
  84. “Sosoda! Come on you little thief, seriously!” Bardex yelled from below. He was coming up the ladder now, and when he saw the Xextos making eyes at Diy, his whole expression went from frustrated to outright angry.
  85.
  86. His arm reached out to swipe at the Sosoda, but was dodged by one deft movement from the little guy, and in chopped up basic the Xextos replied, “No luck.”
  87.
  88. Then he ran down the corridor before disappearing through a door.
  89.
  90. “I hate that guy,” Bardex replied, “Well beautiful, you finally decided to join us inside?”
  91.
  92. She wanted to burst and tell Bardex everything about Endrun. How she was so mean, how she didn’t seem to like Diy at all, how she forced her to do Endrun’s work. Instead she realized that she was alone in the hall with Bardex, and that everything could be okay from this point.
  93.
  94. “Yes Master,” Diy said, “Lt. Endrun says we’re ready to takeoff.”
  95.
  96. Bardex lifted himself up and sat on the lip of their floor with his feet still on the ladder, “Maddy wasn’t in any real hurry today, was she? Don’t let her intimidate you, she is a real softy.”
  97.
  98. “If you say so,” Diy said, with her eyes down.
  99.
  100. Bardex stood, then looked back down the hole, “Unfortunately, I haven’t even started to warm the Wraith up. Sosoda was supposed to be keeping my ship safe, but he is about as good a mechanic as a mynock with goggles on.”
  101.
  102. Diy frowned, “Why would a mynock have…”
  103.
  104. “Don’t worry about it,” Bardex said, “You’re not here to fix hyperdrives or pilot through asteroid fields, so let me show you to a bunk.”
  105.
  106. Diy let out a sigh of relief.
  107.
  108. “I knew it,” He said, “You look even better when you relax.”
  109.
  110. She could look into those eyes forever. It was strange, she didn’t know how to explain it, but she really did feel better just by being around him. If only her mother could have met him.
  111.
  112. “Thank you, Master.”
  113.
  114. The whole ship rumbled, and Bardex looked back toward the cargo hold.
  115.
  116. A chirp went off in his pocket, and he pulled out a little black cylinder.
  117.
  118. “Captain,” Endrun said, “We have some company on the way. Now would be a good time to takeoff.”
  119.
  120. He grumbled to himself as he ran back toward the hanger. Diy followed, keeping up as best she could as they scrambled toward the open rear of the ship.
  121.
  122. As they got to the door, Endrun was walking the other way in the hall.
  123.
  124. “Where are you going?” Bardex said as their shoulders collided.
  125.
  126. “The turrets.”
  127.
  128. Bardex’s eyes went wide, and Diy felt a chill go through her whole body.
  129.
  130. “What’s going on?” She asked, “Who is coming for us?”
  131.
  132. No sooner than the words were out of her mouth could she see out the reopened rear hatch. It looked like a wheeled tank, large and armored. Flanking it were a variety of speeders, all with colorful thugs riding them into battle. Each speeder had a passenger, aiming weapons at the Crimson Wraith, and taking shots that the large ship ignored.
  133.
  134. “Okay,” Bardex said as he backed up and hit the button to raise the ramp, “Endrun’s right, time to leave, come on beautiful.”
  135.
  136. “Who are they?”
  137.
  138. “The slug realized we’re here,” Bardex said as they rushed back through the ship, then he pulled up his communicator, “Sosoda! Are you done having a tantrum yet?”
  139.
  140. A high pitched alien grunt came back over the communicator.
  141.
  142. Then the whole ship rocked, nearly knocking Diy off her feet. They were really under attack, she hadn’t even been free half a day, and this was happening again. She felt so useless, so small. All she could do is take deep breaths, and try to remember her training. Stay calm, clear the bad thoughts.
  143.
  144. “Fine!” Bardex shouted, “You’ll burn with the rest of us, you womp rat.”
  145.
  146. “Is this because of that thing you took?” Diy asked as they ran, “Why not just give it back? Then we can just leave.”
  147.
  148. Bardex stopped and turned, putting a hand on the ladder that headed down a floor, “Wow, that is just... “ He moved in wrapped an arm around Diy, pulled her chest to chest, his eyes focused down into hers. They he kissed her, his lips rough but warm. The contact was like a snap, it jolted through her body, and then left her muscles wobbling.
  149.
  150. “That Hutt would kill me regardless,” He said as he let her go. He smiled, then started to slide down, “Go tell the Xextos to prepare to leave.”
  151.
  152. Diy stood there, and brought a hand up to her lips.
  153.
  154. “Girly! Go!”
  155.
  156. She snapped to attention, “Yes, Master!”
  157.
  158. She didn’t know her way around this ship, she didn’t know which directly the Xextos went. Plus, she knew the ship was being surrounded as she ran around. Why would anyone trust her to do this? Why not just talk to the Xextos on the communicator, that was quicker.
  159.
  160. Diy went the first place she could imagine, the other end of the ship, that was where it was controlled from right?
  161.
  162. She hit the button, the door slid open, and ran into a larger room with space to sit down, and suits hanging off of the walls. Was this where they relaxed? She could see a window out ahead, it had to be the place to control the ship. She ran up, her heart beating fast, and her head fighting against the urge to go out of control.
  163.
  164. The room, three seats, and a window out to the front. No one was there, just empty seats and controls that may as well have been ancient Hutt history as far as she was concerned. Outside, she could see men setting weapons up. Others were taking shots, but they were being bounced by the ship’s shields. Then one, with a larger blaster on the back of a speeder, fired at the window. The whole ship rumbled, and Diy was thrown off of her feet.
  165.
  166. They were going to get in, they were all going to die, and there was nothing Diy could do.
  167.
  168. She sat there in the cockpit, wrapped her arms around herself, and thought about what they would do to her. Would they drag her to a new master? Would they just kill her? This time she escaped, her owner was dead, there was no way they would keep her alive, no matter what skills she had. She was damaged goods.
  169.
  170. Diy took a long breath, and sat up straight. She closed her eyes, and ran through a calming chant in her head. She drowned out the shots, the sound of the ship whirring with power, the distant sound of the turret firing and grinding treads. All she could hear then was… whimpering.
  171.
  172. Her eyes opened, and Diy looked around the cockpit. It wasn’t in here, she moved to the next room, and saw a sort of locker, next to the circular table. It shook slightly, and Diy walked over and pulled the door open.
  173.
  174. Sosoda fell out, his eyes going wide with shock.
  175.
  176. “How?” he said with a heavy accent.
  177.
  178. “Sosoda right?” She said, trying hard not to cry as the situation overwhelmed her, “Captain Bardex wants you to get ready to fly, we’re under attack.”
  179.
  180. “Not Captain,” Sosoda said as he flipped over and stood up, “Crook.”
  181.
  182. Crook? Bardex, she already had a feeling he was a thief, he came and stole from that wookiee didn’t he? She couldn’t think about that now, but something about seeing that smiling face as a criminal was hard.
  183.
  184. “It doesn’t matter,” She said, “Can you start the ship?”
  185.
  186. “Hide,” Sosoda said, “We hide, then escape.” Then he said something in his own language, and Diy could tell it would have made her cheeks burn based on the sway of his arms.
  187.
  188. He didn’t want to fight, they were doomed.
  189.
  190. “Please,” Diy said, “I just got free, I can’t run again. If you get us out of here, I’ll owe you. I promise.”
  191.
  192. Sosoda looked at her sideways, “Promise?”
  193.
  194. She was making too many promises.
  195.
  196. “Yes,” She said, a glimmer of hope in her eyes, “I promise, I will make it up to you. I know how to sing, and dance.”
  197.
  198. Sosoda smiled, and nodded, then started a string of Xextese words she couldn’t understand as he ran into the cockpit. Diy followed, and the little man’s four arms scrambled over the controls, hitting buttons and switches.
  199.
  200. She looked out front, and saw more weapons being set up.
  201.
  202. “They’re going to shoot again,” She said.
  203.
  204. A muzzle from above adjusted, and fired on a speeder. It exploded, knocking over several of the thugs and making others cramble.
  205.
  206. Sosoda shouted something, and then used a lower arm to slap Diy on the ass.
  207.
  208. She gasped, but something about this, the ridiculousness of it all, it made her giggle.
  209.
  210. “You up there Sosoda?” Bardex said over an intercom.
  211.
  212. Sosoda flipped a switch, and then pointed at her.
  213.
  214. “Oh,” She said, “We’re ready to fly captain.”
  215.
  216. “Good, punch it, I’ll keep her stable.”
  217.
  218. The Xexto shouted, hit a button, and the ship started to lift off. A large shot cleared under the ship as they lifted off. Diy yelped, and then a sudden rush of acceleration threw her into the chair just behind her. She buckled in, and the dying atmosphere of Nal Hutta started to fall away right in front of her.
  219.
  220. It was quiet as they rose into the air. For a moment, Diy let herself relax. No one was firing on them, the ship was fine, and the beauty of the stars was opening up in front of her.
  221.
  222. “Don’t cry,” Sosoda said, unhooking himself and reaching out to wipe away a tear she didn’t realize she was shedding, “We safe.”
  223.
  224. “I’m not sad,” Diy said, “I’m sort of happy, that was a terrible place.”
  225.
  226. “Yeah well it isn’t the last you’ll see of Nal Hutta,” Bardex said from behind her. She turned and he put a hand on her shoulder.
  227.
  228. Sosoda gave Bardex a look, and made a three armed motion that she had to assume was rude.
  229.
  230. “Love you two little guy,” Bardex said, “Now go hide in a hole somewhere, and try not to scrap my ship for one job.”
  231.
  232. Endrun came on over the communicator, “We have a freighter here, A four, with a group of bandits.”
  233.
  234. “Keep them busy until we can jump, Buckethead.”
  235.
  236. “Yes Captain,” She said.
  237.
  238. Bardex smiled as he started to hit different dials. “Time to get scarce until the slug dries out a little.”
  239.
  240. “You’re going to run?” Diy asked.
  241.
  242. “All thanks to you,” He winked at her, “My pretty green wonder.”
  243.
  244. She blushed, and shook her head, “I didn’t do anything.”
  245.
  246. Bardex smacked a panel, then tweaked a nob. “Trust me, getting Sosoda to care about anyone but himself is a feat all in itself.”
  247.
  248. The ship rumbled as two different ships came flying over them. One looked like a flying fork, and the other a large fan. Bardex grabbed a stick, adjusted it, then hit the button on it. A shot rang out, and the fan-shaped ship was clipped, before going spiraling out of control.
  249.
  250. “This is all so crazy,” She whispered.
  251.
  252. “Isn’t it exciting?” Bardex said with a laugh, “Now watch this. you’ll like it.”
  253.
  254. He pulled down a lever, and the world streaked before it. For a moment, she felt like her vision extended on for forever, while the world was stuck in time. Then in the next moment, the world, the stars, all shuddered and vanished. Then they were surrounded by a beautiful blue field.
  255.
  256. Bardex let out a sigh of relief, then smacked her on the shoulder, “Too easy, right?”
  257.
  258. “That was easy for you?” She said with a raised eyebrow.
  259.
  260. “You looked practically cool during most of it,” Bardex said, “What is your secret? Should I take a few classes in dance?”
  261.
  262. Maybe he should spend most of his life as a slave. That might do the trick. Though she couldn’t blame it on that alone, she knew she was more than just that. At least, she hoped she was more than just that.
  263.
  264. “Really, I was real nervous,” She said, “Now I’m kind of…”
  265.
  266. “Hungry?” Bardex answered for her, “Come on, I’ll whip us something up, and then you can get some rest while we’re on the way.”
  267.
  268. Diy smiled, and couldn’t suppress a short laugh. He took her hand, and they went out to the table, where Bardex pulled out some basic supplied, and made her a meal that looked like a bunch of colored blocks, but tasted better than anything she had ever tasted in her life.
  269.
  270. Bardex showed her his ‘Captain’s Quarters’, which was a room that had a desk covered in different dataslates and rolled up scrolls. His bed was there too, with a thick blanket thrown across that was splashed with unimaginable colors. In fact, the whole room was generally fun to look at, with images of distant places, and warm comforts.
  271.
  272. She sat on the edge of the bed, and waited for him there as he went to finish some stuff on the ship. Then the wait went on some time. Then she pushed herself against the wall, unsure if she was safe to sleep without his word.
  273.
  274. Then the door opened, and Diy turned only to find Endrun in the doorway.
  275.
  276. “Oh,” Diy said, pulling her knees up close to her as the woman entered the room and shut the door behind her.
  277.
  278. “Is that smell you?” Endrun said as she turned up her nose, “It is bad enough with the Xexto, but this is unique.”
  279.
  280. Diy looked down at her outfit, mostly strings of cloth, just meant to cover enough, and let the rest move as she danced. She couldn’t smell anything, but the words still stung.
  281.
  282. “I’m sorry,” She said.
  283.
  284. “That’s true,” Endrun said as she went and sat on the bed next to Diy. When Diy tried to shift away, Endrun put a bare hand on her leg and kept her in place. “Maybe it is my fault, we haven’t had a whore linger this long, I wasn’t prepared for the odor to settle.”
  285.
  286. Diy looked down, and tried to ignore the roiling pit in her stomach. “I’m not…”
  287.
  288. “I don’t remember asking you to speak,” She said.
  289.
  290. Why was she doing this? Why was she so mean? More important than that, why would Bardex have a woman like this on his ship? She was a cruel person, was this the kind of people Bardex kept around him? Was it because he was a crook? The words hurt worse than Endrun’s insults, it chipped away at something she saw in him. She didn’t want to tarnish the hero who saved her.
  291.
  292. Diy snapped back to attention when she felt Endrun’s hand sliding up her bare thigh, meeting that point of her inner thigh. Diy took a deep breath.
  293.
  294. “He doesn’t care about you,” Endrun began, “You know that right? I would be surprised if he even remembered your name. You’re just the beautiful toy he brought on board. He likes your black freckles, and that colorful mark on your face. He likes the way your breasts squeeze together, and that embarrassing outfit you wear. But as soon as he gets bored, you’re going to be sitting in a port, selling yourself to a slimeball twi’lek that needs new talent.”
  295.
  296. She couldn’t hold back the tears. She sniffled once, and then they streaked down her face as she tried to understand what she ever did to this woman.
  297.
  298. Endrun grabbed her leg with her other hand, which had a black glove on it. She pulled Diy’s knees apart, and then Endrun’s bare fingers slipped under her dress, and touched her private place.
  299.
  300. Diy sat up straight, unsure what to expect. The fingers were cold, mechanical. It reminded her of an examination she got when she was first becoming a woman. Diy felt her cheeks get hot, and pulled her hands together.
  301.
  302. Then Endrun’s fingers were gone, and she pulled them up to her nose. She took a sniff, and her face crinkled up.
  303.
  304. “You’re disgusting, do you know that?”
  305.
  306. Diy sobbed, “Yes.”
  307.
  308. “Don’t worry, I’ll fix this.”
  309.
  310. Diy looked at the woman, she couldn’t hide the confusion in her eyes.
  311.
  312. “For now, sleep.” Endrun said as she put on her other glove, “Tomorrow, I will make sure you’re clean, and we can get you some clothing so you can pretend you aren’t a bantha in heat.”
  313.
  314. “Yes,” Diy said, “Thank you Ma... Lieutenant Endrun.”
  315.
  316. Endrun put her hands behind her back, and a grin crossed her lips before vanishing.
  317.
  318. “You’re welcome. With that attitude, you’ll do better than the others.”
  319.
  320. She started toward the door, and Diy found she couldn’t avoid one question that was getting to her.
  321.
  322. “Wait,” She said, “Where is Bardex?”
  323.
  324. “The captain is sleep in the cockpit, enjoy your empty bed.”
  325.
  326. The door closed, and Diy let out a breath she didn’t realized was caught in her throat. So she was alone. Like Endrun said, the captain didn’t even remember that she was in his bed. He had fallen asleep somewhere, probably doing things more important than her.
  327.
  328. Did he remember her name? Was she just some girl he thought he could take advantage of? She took him as a master, would she ever tell him no?
  329.
  330. She tried to lay down, and relax. The thoughts danced around in her head, mixed with Endrun’s strange ‘help’. She couldn’t go to sleep.
  331.
  332. So she picked up the blanket on the bed, and left the room. The ship lights were dimmed, and she wandered toward the cockpit. She could hear snoring. When she got there, she saw one of the chairs reclined, and Bardex laying in it, with a hand behind his back and the other across his chest.
  333.
  334. He looked so peaceful, happy even. The room had dancing colors from their trip through hyperspace. It was even more beautiful than the inside of his room. No wonder he fell asleep here.
  335.
  336. Diy took the blanket, and laid it across him. Bardex snorted and shifted, but stayed sleep. She felt a chill. Endrun was right, she needed a change of clothes.
  337.
  338. It made her wonder how much more Endrun was right about.
  339.
  340. Diy yawned, and pulled up the blanket. She tried to climb into the chair on top of him, but Bardex snapped awake.
  341.
  342. “I didn’t do it!” He said as he looked around. She almost fell back out of the chair as he tried to sit up. “Whoa there beautiful, why you up?”
  343.
  344. She didn’t know where to go. She was sitting in his lap, her weight laid on him, in the middle of the night. He looked a little surprised, but not all that concerned.
  345.
  346. “I was cold,” Diy whispered.
  347.
  348. Bardex looked outside the ship, and then back at Diy. Then he let out a short laugh, and wrapped his arm around her shoulder to pull her down against him.
  349.
  350. “Come on,” He said, “I know what your problem is. You just need a better locale, like me. Don’t worry, with you here, this is the prettiest view on the ship.”
  351.
  352. Despite the compliment, he closed his eyes, and went right back to sleep. Diy laid her head against his chest, and looked up at the man’s red face, blue light swimming across the surface. She felt exhausted too, and here alongside him, she couldn’t fight the urge to pass out. So she closed her eyes, and tried to push her worries into tomorrow.
