  74.
  75. A June 2012 report from the UK based
  76. advocacy group Global Witness points
  77. out that one of the problems is that
  78. legal authorities in the United States,
  79. United Kingdom and many other countries
  80. don’t hold nominee directors responsible
  81. for the conduct of the companies they
  82. front.
  83.
  84. In addition, documents setting up
  85. offshore companies often include clauses
  86. that shield nominees from financial
  87. liability if the companies get sued.

  91. ¤ Swiss Lawyers Who Help Europe’s Richest
  92. Families Park Their Wealth Offshore ::
  93.
  94. Thyssen, Sachs and Rothschild are among
  95. Switzerland’s largest law firm clients.
  96.
  97. Little did Zurich-based lawyer Peter
  98. Hafter imagine how things would turn out
  99. when he ordered a $2,700 offshore kit
  100. to create a front company in the Cook
  101. Islands on September 13, 1993. Twenty
  102. years on from that day, the fax he sent,
  103. the ensuing emails and all his business
  104. correspondence with Portcullis TrustNet
  105. in Rarotonga, the largest island in the
  106. archipelago, have been copied and passed
  107. on to journalists around the world. ...
  108.
  109. Peter Hafter also established 18 trusts
  110. in the Cook Islands for Baron Elie de
  111. Rothschild, the founder and former president
  112. of the Rothschild Bank in Zurich, who died
  113. in 2007. The famous lawyer declined to
  114. comment on this case. He also declined to
  115. explain his role in setting up companies
  116. for art patron Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza,
  117. wife of the German steel manufacturer
  118. Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen.

  122. ¤ Dutch Banking Giants Helped Clients
  123. Go Offshore ::
  124.
  125. The Dutch banks ING and ABN Amro
  126. registered dozens of companies for
  127. their clients in offshore refuges
  128. with lovely beaches and low tax rates
  129. such as the British Virgin Islands,
  130. the Cook Islands and the Malaysian
  131. island of Labuan, an investigation by
  132. Dutch newspaper Trouw and the ICIJ
  133. has found.

  138. Found in Secret Offshore Documents ::
  139.

  141.
  142. Owners of corporations registered in
  143. tax havens include some linked to regime
  144. of the late dictator, Suharto.
  145.
  146. Nine of Indonesia’s 11 richest families
  147. have found shelter in tropical tax
  148. havens, holding ownership of more than
  149. 190 offshore trusts and companies,
  150. secret records obtained by the ICIJ show.
  151.
  152. The nine families, worth an estimated
  153. $36 billion among them, are at the top
  154. of a wealthy class that dominates
  155. Indonesia’s politics and economy.
  156.
  157. Six were closely tied to the late
  158. dictator Suharto, who helped a special
  159. circle of Indonesians grow rich during
  160. his 31-year rule by granting economic
  161. fiefdoms to family and friends. ...
  162.
  163. Danang Wirdaus of Indonesian Corruption
  164. Watch said that after Indonesia’s 1998
  165. financial crisis many Indonesian tycoons
  166. moved to Singapore and Hong Kong.

  173. ¤ Leaks Reveal Secrets of Oligarchs Who
  174. Hide Cash in Offshore Tax Havens ::
  175.
  176. Millions of internal records have
  177. leaked from Britain’s offshore financial
  178. industry, exposing for the first time
  179. the identities of thousands of holders
  180. of anonymous wealth from around the world,
  181. from presidents to plutocrats, the daughter
  182. of a notorious dictator and a British
  183. millionaire accused of concealing assets
  184. from his ex-wife.
  185.
  186. The leak of 2,000,000 emails and other
  187. documents, mainly from the offshore haven
  188. of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), has
  189. the potential to cause a seismic shock
  190. worldwide to the booming offshore trade,
  191. with a former chief economist at McKinsey
  192. estimating that wealthy individuals may
  193. have as much as $32tn (£21tn) stashed
  194. in overseas havens.

  197.
  198. The names have been unearthed in a
  199. novel project by the Washington-based
  200. International Consortium of Investigative
  201. Journalists [ICIJ], in collaboration
  202. with the Guardian and other international
  203. media, who are jointly publishing their
  204. research results this week.

  209.
  210. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/apr/04/offshore-secrets-data-emails-icij
  211.
  212. The ICIJ’s exploration of offshore
  213. secrets began when a computer hard drive
  214. packed with corporate data arrived in
  215. the post. Gerard Ryle, ICIJ’s director,
  216. obtained the small black box as a result
  217. of his three-year investigation of
  218. Australia’s Firepower scandal, a case
  219. involving offshore havens and corporate
  220. fraud.
  221.
  222. The hard drive contained more than 260
  223. gigabytes, the equivalent of half a million
  224. books. Its files included 2m emails, four
  225. large databases. There were details of
  226. more than 122,000 offshore companies or
  227. trusts, and nearly 12,000 intermediaries
  228. (agents or introducers).
  229.
  230. Unlike the smaller cache of US cables and
  231. war logs passed in 2010 to WikiLeaks, the
  232. offshore data was not structured or clean,
  233. but an unsorted collation of internal memos
  234. and instructions, official documents, emails,
  235. large and small databases and spreadsheets,
  236. scanned passports and accounting ledgers.
  237.
  238. ¤ Inside the Global Offshore Money Maze ::
  239.
  240. http://www.icij.org/offshore/how-icijs-project-team-analyzed-offshore-files
  241.
  242. • Government officials and their families
  243. and associates in Azerbaijan, Russia,
  244. Canada, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand,
  245. Mongolia and other countries have embraced
  246. the use of covert companies and bank accounts.
  247.
  248. • The mega-rich use complex offshore
  249. structures to own mansions, yachts, art
  250. masterpieces and other assets, gaining
  251. tax advantages and anonymity not available
  252. to average people.
  253.
  254. • Many of the world’s top’s banks –
  255. including UBS, Clariden and Deutsche Bank
  256. – have aggressively worked to provide
  257. their customers with secrecy-cloaked
  258. companies in the British Virgin Islands
  259. and other offshore hideaways.
  260.
  261. • A well-paid industry of accountants,
  262. middlemen and other operatives has helped
  263. offshore patrons shroud their identities
  264. and business interests, providing shelter
  265. in many cases to money laundering or other
  266. misconduct.
  267.
  268. • Ponzi schemers and other large-scale
  269. fraudsters routinely use offshore havens
  270. to pull off their shell games and move
  271. their ill-gotten gains.
