- <camerongray> What is everyone's obession with DriverAgent at the moment? Looks just like the usual junk!
- <Aciebel> camerongray: It is though :P
- <IndianaJoe> username: ij8298099
- <camerongray> Junk? Yeah :P
- <IndianaJoe> password: faye21
- <camerongray> Rushmore: DVI is Digital, VGA is analogue - DVI has a clearer, sharper picture so use it if you can
- <camerongray> We are seriously advising DriverAgent now?
- <IndianaJoe> no, unlike the competitors, it is not junk
- <Aciebel> camerongray: DVI shares its quality settings with HDMI, VGA is kind of outdated
- <camerongray> Sure looks like it, paying for drivers?
- <Jman306> AFK
- <Aciebel> IndianaJoe: Ever seen DriverScanner by Uniblue?
- <IndianaJoe> yes - have seen it - and that one is junk
- <Aciebel> IndianaJoe: One of the harder ones to get for free, but certainly not a bad program
- <camerongray> Going to do what I've been planning on doing for ages - Running it on my testing laptop, see how much it tries to scare me!
- <Aciebel> I've been using it for a long time and it seems to have done its job pretty well though
- <lostcoast> http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/uniblue.com?utm_source=addon&utm_content=popup-donuts

- <lostcoast> most any are fine
- <guest_65> will all of them connect a tower's hard drive to a laptop fine?
- --> guest_85 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
- <Aciebel> guest_89: Sorry lost track of your post, now go to "device manager"
- <lostcoast> if its 3.5 and 2.5 inch drive compatible you can use laptop or desktop drives over usb
- <guest_85> i dont get it, my video card on x4 antialiasing is 1 degree cooler than on x2 antialiasing on trackmania forever, any idea why?
- <Aciebel> guest_89: and see under the tab "network adapters" which ones are there
- <camerongray> Oh no! According to DriverAgent my testing laptop has 57% out of date drivers - I bet updating them will make it so much faster :L
- <guest_85> 57% faster
- <camerongray> lol
- <IndianaJoe> it's up to you if you want to update
- <camerongray> I wonder what the same company's "Registry Wizard" will do :P
- <camerongray> Good job machine is being reinstalled
- <guest_85> i dont get it, my video card on x4 antialiasing is 1 degree cooler than on x2 antialiasing on trackmania forever, any idea why??
- <IndianaJoe> regwiz is an ok product - it won't kill your system
- <IndianaJoe> but I don't use it myself
- <Aciebel> IndianaJoe: That's a good start
- <Quantos> That's not much of a review. 'It won't kill your system'
- <Aciebel> Quantos: But it's something
- <camerongray> Wow it's flipping out!
- <Aciebel> lol
- <camerongray> And this is a pretty much brand new install of Vista Business
- <IndianaJoe> I have seen similar products cause much damage

- <camerongray> I'm actually scared to try their "BIOS Agent Plus" :P - And this is an ancient machine!

- <camerongray> lol
- <guest_85> whats it do
- <camerongray> But that's one thing that would actually persist on the machine

- <Aciebel> Try to run it for free 4 more times and you're done
- <camerongray> Well, that's highly amusing!
- <camerongray> I ran DriverAgent, gave loads of "out of date" drivers
- <camerongray> Didn't mention Modem anywher
- <Aciebel> you'll have another 16 toolbars then, but hey, at which cost?
- <camerongray> Then Windows just popped up th solution center - "You are missing the driver for your Modem, download it from the Hewlett Packard website"
- <camerongray> If driveragent is so good, why can't it see a modem? :P
- <Aciebel> Lovely, those witty popups

- <Aciebel> No Modem driver, have fun downloading it
- -*- camerongray explodes with laugheter spilling a drink all over his desk

- <IndianaJoe> from hp, intel, Broadcom, etc - whatever is in your machine

- <IndianaJoe> cg it doesn't share any info
- <camerongray> Then where did you get my hostmask?
- <IndianaJoe> staff
- <camerongray> Then that's absolutely fantastic!
- <camerongray> Staff that are willing to share info about customer PCs
- <Azander> ???
- <camerongray> Azander: I ran a scan with DriverAgent on my testing laptop (Going to reinstall) to see how bad it really was
- <camerongray> Turns out that staff members are willing to give my scan results to IndianaJoe
- <Azander> tikes!
- <Azander> Yikes
- <camerongray> Which IMO is ridiculous!
- <camerongray> I mean, it doesn't have much info but still
- <Azander> Staff on Mibbit are forbidden to share that info for privacy reasons :)
- <guest_65> hey guys, How would i make my 7200 1TB internal sata hard drive into an external one which would be able to connect to my laptop?
- <lostcoast> privacy on the internet ...laf
- <camerongray> But still, a company doing that!
- <camerongray> guest_65: You can get a SATA enclosure that will do that
- <camerongray> I mean, what it includes is my machines specs, model, OS version, hostname and a list of installed software!
- <camerongray> There could have easily been propriatery business software on there!
- <guest_65> camerongray: a SATA enclosure would convert the hard drive from sata to usb in the caddy?
- <camerongray> guest_65: Yeah, they usually have a controller that does that
- <camerongray> Also get ones that do USB 3.0 and ESATA
- <guest_65> camerongray: could you maybe find a cheap one that is able to do USB 3.0 and SATA for a 3.5?
- <camerongray> Just look on amazon, something like "USB 3.0 SATA Enclosure 3.5"
- <lostcoast> or just buy an adapter cable
- <camerongray> True, depends if you want it to be external forever of just a few times
- <camerongray> or*
- <guitar_man> camerongray: he is staff as in he is DA
- <camerongray> guitar_man: So what? Why should staff have access to my personal info like that!
- <guest_65> camerongray: i've given my desktop to my brother, im keeping the hard drive but want it as an external for my laptop :)
- <camerongray> guest_65: Ahh, i'd get the enclosure then, keeps it safet
- <camerongray> safer*
- <camerongray> I don't normally get mad, but that has made me furious!
- <camerongray> IndianaJoe/guitar_man: What other info does their software give, can you get my BIOSAgentPlus report too?
- <-- IndianaJoe ([email protected]) has quit (Ping timeout)
- <guitar_man> I dunno I have never bothered to look , I just give affiliate passes , I let the user do thier own thing , I just support them if needed
- <guest_65> camerongray: would this be the kind of enclosure i should be looking at? http://www.amazon.co.uk/IT735U3-SATA-External-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B004LO59MK
- <camerongray> Yeah, that looks fine
- <camerongray> But what that's just shown is those users are clearly having their privacy violated
- <camerongray> Look at most software "Do you want to send an error report? Click here to see the info this contains, no personally identifiable info is collected" - Nothing like that from DriverAgent
- <camerongray> I expected DriverAgent to be bad, but that's not bad, that's dreadful!
- <guitar_man> in the 8 or 9 years i have been associated with DA , and as far as I know , the only info we use is the driver combo's of the machines,
- <camerongray> But the fact is that it sent that info out without my explicit consent
- <camerongray> And why would it even need that info?
- <-- Rushmore ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
- <camerongray> And if that info is collected, why should "staff" give it out?

- <camerongray> IndianaJoe: So what other info is made available by DriverAgent?
- <camerongray> You know, just taken from my machine and put online without my explcit consent?
- <camerongray> My BIOS report too, I imagine that's taken
- <IndianaJoe> yes
- <camerongray> Oh goody
- <-- guest_15 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
- <camerongray> Where was the message saying it would send it out?
- <IndianaJoe> but none of it is published
- <guitar_man> put online is a knee gerk
- <camerongray> But you could access it?
- <camerongray> No policies or restrictions against it?
- <IndianaJoe> information is used by tech support - you may have problems
- <camerongray> In that case I should be clearly asked if I want it sent out
- <camerongray> For example, my hostname, why is that there?
- <camerongray> Pretty sure my IP would be logged somewhere - It's not too hard to work out my pattern of hostnames from there
- <camerongray> The majority of my machines are accessible over the internet, being able to work out hostmasks of other machines is not good
- <IndianaJoe> your machine name - used by you if you have more than 1 machine linked to your account
- <camerongray> I didn't even use an account!
- <IndianaJoe> excellent
- <camerongray> I don't have an issue with data being collected in general, but no explicit consent?
- <camerongray> That's BAD
- <IndianaJoe> it's GOOD
- <camerongray> Explain why?
- <guest_65> how on earth is data being collected without consent a good thing?
- <camerongray> Why it's good for a piece of desktop software, to collect potentially personally identifiable information (Although a long shot but could be) without consent
- <camerongray> I wouldn't mind if it had said "Do you want to send this info to DriverAgent to help assist you if you need support"
- <camerongray> But nope, one click, BAM, sent
- <-- guest_65 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
- <guitar_man> next click bam list of good bad drivers and download links
- <guitar_man> as well as any software updates
- <camerongray> And shared online
- <camerongray> It could have all been done in software
- <Aciebel> camerongray, FBI is now reading your results
- <Aciebel> They're on to you, run!
- <camerongray> lol
- <guitar_man> nope is not shared online ,
- <camerongray> Simply looked up what drivers I have, compared to its database, then told me what needs updated
- <camerongray> There is no need for it to be shared or stored anywhere
- <camerongray> Now, a "Share report" button would be very useful
- <camerongray> But it's not needed formost cases
- <Aciebel> inb4 share on Facebook and tell your friends which drivers need updated!
- <camerongray> lol!
- <-- cod ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: <censored> the world)
- <camerongray> And I'm not against data collection, remember what my job is? But something like a hostname could have been "CameronGrayPC" - BAM, personally identifiable
- <camerongray> We discuss this a lot at work, e.g. what's personally identifiable and what isn't - Something like a persons name is at the top of the list of "NO!"
- <Aciebel> is your computer's name on there?
- <camerongray> Yeah
- <camerongray> For me it's not personally identifiable "Tiree"
- <Aciebel> I'd question the fact of people knowing I called her Emma
- <camerongray> lol
- <Aciebel> simply because I think that's a nice name
- <camerongray> But from that people could work out the pattern of my other hostmasks fairly quickly
- <camerongray> And since most of my machines are exposed online based on hostmasks, that's not goodf
- <Azander> heh
- --> guest_28 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
- <camerongray> And at work our machines are prefixed with the company's initials
- <-> guest_28 is now known as Aciebel2
- <camerongray> So from there you could find the company and BOOM, there's an address and phone number
- <guitar_man> if they could even be bothered , you are assuming they would , you are assuming they would , so wrong
- <Aciebel2> Yea I can figure that's also easier to get knowledge of the system being used
- <Azander> No.. that isn't it. I've done this argument before. It isn't that they won't, or would, it is that they CAN.
- <Azander> what is to stop some hacker from getting into their systems and stealing that information as well ?
- <Aciebel2> information can be so valuable
- -*- Azander has learned the HARD way :(
- <Aciebel2> how so?
- <guitar_man> can or could and do are assumptions on your part ,
- <Azander> some data was stolen by a hacker, they used it to get into servers I manage.
- <Azander> it was a nightmare for a while.
- <Azander> all because someone else was somewhat lax on security
- <guitar_man> well would be nice if an example of DA abusing the info was presented
- <camerongray> But the fact it's colllected is bad!
- <Azander> it was over a year ago, and I still keep watch for any signs of that information coming back to haunt me.
- <camerongray> And the fact a supposed staff member was so willing to (a) look up my data and (b) post it in a public IRC channel
- <Aciebel2> lol
- <Azander> I see camerongray on 127.0.0.5 :P
- <camerongray> lol
- <camerongray> I have access to data from massive websites, most people here have probably used them - BUt I don't go around posting info that has been collected!
- <camerongray> There are rules around what the data can be used for and where it must be stored, pertty sure posting in an IRC channel is against them
- <Hopebot> Chat rules: English only, no profanity, no discrimination, no discussions on politics/religion, no spam or flooding the channel, no advertisement or other website URLs unless addressing another users question, and no assistance with hacking, cracking, creating viruses, illegal torrents, bypassing copyright laws.
- <camerongray> Yet, this software is happily recommended here as a "solution"
- <camerongray> All it has done is collect info without consent, then try to scare me into paying $30 to fix a laptop that's not even worth that and works fine as it is
- <guitar_man> scare you?
- <camerongray> Apparantly 57% of my drivers are out of date and this will clearly cause all manner of issues with my machine
- <camerongray> Despite this machine running all the latest drivers from HP
- <camerongray> OH SNAP!
- <camerongray> Did you see the claim at startup?
- <camerongray> 10% Faster Internet Speed?
- <guitar_man> nope , not , it tells you that better , newer drivers etc are available
- <Aciebel2> WOW
- <Aciebel2> must have!
- <camerongray> So, lets see that
- <camerongray> Do you have a free account to test that claim with?
- --> guest_59 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
- <Aciebel2> I believe indianajoe had one
- <camerongray> So, before DriverAgent I get 8ms ping, 69.91mbps down and 9.88mbps up
- <guitar_man> and i have not seen the 10% bit , must have a look , but forinstance an older driver could cause a bottle neck that slows the ability to say d/l , correcting that potentially could open the path to the ability to d/l faster
- <camerongray> That's useful since it clearly shows the laptop cannot reach my full connection speed which is 100mbps
- <camerongray> So lets see if DriverAgent can fix that!
- <Aciebel2> I'm a believer
- <camerongray> lol

- <camerongray> guitar_man/IndianaJoe: So, drumroll... Is it 10% faster? Before - Ping: 8ms, 69.91mbps down and 9.88mbps up - After Ping: 7ms, 66.72mbps down and 9.87mbps up... So... DriverAgent making fake claims then?
- <guest_19> Nope.
- <camerongray> Also note this connection gets around 103mbps down on a better machine so the machine isn't even maxing out my cable connection before or after the scan!
