  1. <camerongray> What is everyone's obession with DriverAgent at the moment? Looks just like the usual junk!
  2. <Aciebel> camerongray: It is though :P
  3. <IndianaJoe> username: ij8298099
  4. <camerongray> Junk? Yeah :P
  5. <IndianaJoe> password: faye21
  6. <camerongray> Rushmore: DVI is Digital, VGA is analogue - DVI has a clearer, sharper picture so use it if you can
  7. <camerongray> We are seriously advising DriverAgent now?
  8. <IndianaJoe> no, unlike the competitors, it is not junk
  9. <Aciebel> camerongray: DVI shares its quality settings with HDMI, VGA is kind of outdated
  10. <camerongray> Sure looks like it, paying for drivers?
  11. <Jman306> AFK
  12. <Aciebel> IndianaJoe: Ever seen DriverScanner by Uniblue?
  13. <IndianaJoe> yes - have seen it - and that one is junk
  14. <Aciebel> IndianaJoe: One of the harder ones to get for free, but certainly not a bad program
  15. <camerongray> Going to do what I've been planning on doing for ages - Running it on my testing laptop, see how much it tries to scare me!
  16. <Aciebel> I've been using it for a long time and it seems to have done its job pretty well though
  17. <lostcoast> http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/uniblue.com?utm_source=addon&utm_content=popup-donuts
  18. <lostcoast> very poor rep
  19. <Aciebel> lostcoast: Lol @ child safety though

  21. <guest_65> hey, any one know of any good usb to sata hard drive adapters?
  22. <lostcoast> most any are fine
  23. <guest_65> will all of them connect a tower's hard drive to a laptop fine?
  24. --> guest_85 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  25. <Aciebel> guest_89: Sorry lost track of your post, now go to "device manager"
  26. <lostcoast> if its 3.5 and 2.5 inch drive compatible you can use laptop or desktop drives over usb
  27. <guest_85> i dont get it, my video card on x4 antialiasing is 1 degree cooler than on x2 antialiasing on trackmania forever, any idea why?
  28. <Aciebel> guest_89: and see under the tab "network adapters" which ones are there
  29. <camerongray> Oh no! According to DriverAgent my testing laptop has 57% out of date drivers - I bet updating them will make it so much faster :L
  30. <guest_85> 57% faster
  31. <camerongray> lol
  32. <IndianaJoe> it's up to you if you want to update
  33. <camerongray> I wonder what the same company's "Registry Wizard" will do :P
  34. <camerongray> Good job machine is being reinstalled
  35. <guest_85> i dont get it, my video card on x4 antialiasing is 1 degree cooler than on x2 antialiasing on trackmania forever, any idea why??
  36. <IndianaJoe> regwiz is an ok product - it won't kill your system
  37. <IndianaJoe> but I don't use it myself
  38. <Aciebel> IndianaJoe: That's a good start
  39. <Quantos> That's not much of a review. 'It won't kill your system'
  40. <Aciebel> Quantos: But it's something
  41. <camerongray> Wow it's flipping out!
  42. <Aciebel> lol
  43. <camerongray> And this is a pretty much brand new install of Vista Business
  44. <IndianaJoe> I have seen similar products cause much damage
  45. <guest_89> : Aciebel there is nothing in there
  46. <camerongray> All it has installed is Chrome and DriverAgent and has only ever been used 5 times to run "Winbox" (My router's config program)
  47. <Aciebel> guest_89: excuse me?
  48. <camerongray> Oh no! 131 Problems found!
  49. <Aciebel> guest_89: How exactly are you talking to me right now, if you do not have a network adapter?
  50. <guest_89> am using another comp
  51. <Aciebel> Ah, well that makes sense
  52. <camerongray> I'm actually scared to try their "BIOS Agent Plus" :P - And this is an ancient machine!
  53. <Aciebel> camerongray: DO IT
  54. <camerongray> lol
  55. <guest_85> whats it do
  56. <camerongray> But that's one thing that would actually persist on the machine
  57. <IndianaJoe> camerongray fair comment
  58. <guest_85> whats it do?
  59. <camerongray> Actually, probably won't do anything since I'm not going to pay

  61. <Aciebel> camerongray: But will you dare click the button?
  62. <camerongray> lol
  63. <guest_85> bios updates are scary, screen froze when i did mine, but it was ok
  64. <camerongray> It's a junk laptop!
  65. <camerongray> HP/Compaq NX7300 - Celeron 440, 2gb RAM, Vista Business
  66. <guest_85> i wouldnt use that for toilet paper
  67. <guest_85> wouldnt flush
  68. <camerongray> lol!
  69. <camerongray> I got it in a bunch of laptops I was refurbing
  70. <guest_85> ic
  71. <guest_85> seems not too bad tho
  72. <camerongray> Worked fine out of the box but not worth the bother cleaning and selling so I just kept it as a testing unit
  73. <camerongray> Oh, what a bonus - It fixed 30 registry errors!
  74. <camerongray> But wait! 101 remaining, OMG!, I better pay for it!
  75. <IndianaJoe> lol
  76. --> guest_15 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  77. <Aciebel> Try to run it for free 4 more times and you're done
  78. <camerongray> Well, that's highly amusing!
  79. <camerongray> I ran DriverAgent, gave loads of "out of date" drivers
  80. <camerongray> Didn't mention Modem anywher
  81. <Aciebel> you'll have another 16 toolbars then, but hey, at which cost?
  82. <camerongray> Then Windows just popped up th solution center - "You are missing the driver for your Modem, download it from the Hewlett Packard website"
  83. <camerongray> If driveragent is so good, why can't it see a modem? :P
  84. <Aciebel> Lovely, those witty popups
  85. <camerongray> This was an official Windows message
  86. <Aciebel> No Modem driver, have fun downloading it
  87. -*- camerongray explodes with laugheter spilling a drink all over his desk
  88. <camerongray> Remember when I ran DriverAgent and it said 57%?
  89. <Aciebel> Hm?
  90. <camerongray> Well, I just ran that BIOS thing, same company, but now I have 63% old drivers!
  91. <camerongray> I changed nothign!
  92. <Aciebel> Better start, before the number shoot up
  93. <Aciebel> numbers*
  94. <camerongray> lol
  95. <camerongray> Now on to uniblue
  96. <camerongray> I connected the laptop to my guest network area for a reason :P

  99. <Aciebel> iykwim
  100. -*- Aciebel pokes camerongray
  101. <camerongray> lol
  102. <camerongray> Not trying to repair it
  103. <camerongray> Just seeing how they try to scare me
  104. <Aciebel> Oh, well that changes things
  105. <Aciebel> Need some more programs that "improve your system"?
  106. <camerongray> That found the modem at least!
  107. <Aciebel> what type of modem are you using?
  108. <camerongray> Not using it, it's the internal dial up one
  109. <Aciebel> haha
  110. <Aciebel> because updating that will greatly improve your performance
  111. <IndianaJoe> camerongray I have your results - for "tiree"
  112. <camerongray> lol!
  113. <camerongray> Another reason I don't want to use it!
  114. --> HD8 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  115. <camerongray> So does it share everyone's system info with members?
  116. <IndianaJoe> DA will prioritize Hp drivers. bap will give you the latest driver
  117. <camerongray> No, but what I'm shocked about is the fact it shares MY system info with members
  118. <IndianaJoe> from hp, intel, Broadcom, etc - whatever is in your machine
  119. <Aciebel> AFK for a while
  120. <-- guest_26 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  121. <camerongray> I wasn't given any option to explicitly share my info like that
  122. <IndianaJoe> cg it doesn't share any info
  123. <camerongray> Then where did you get my hostmask?
  124. <IndianaJoe> staff
  125. <camerongray> Then that's absolutely fantastic!
  126. <camerongray> Staff that are willing to share info about customer PCs
  127. <Azander> ???
  128. <camerongray> Azander: I ran a scan with DriverAgent on my testing laptop (Going to reinstall) to see how bad it really was
  129. <camerongray> Turns out that staff members are willing to give my scan results to IndianaJoe
  130. <Azander> tikes!
  131. <Azander> Yikes
  132. <camerongray> Which IMO is ridiculous!
  133. <camerongray> I mean, it doesn't have much info but still
  134. <Azander> Staff on Mibbit are forbidden to share that info for privacy reasons :)
  135. <guest_65> hey guys, How would i make my 7200 1TB internal sata hard drive into an external one which would be able to connect to my laptop?
  136. <lostcoast> privacy on the internet ...laf
  137. <camerongray> But still, a company doing that!
  138. <camerongray> guest_65: You can get a SATA enclosure that will do that
  139. <camerongray> I mean, what it includes is my machines specs, model, OS version, hostname and a list of installed software!
  140. <camerongray> There could have easily been propriatery business software on there!
  141. <guest_65> camerongray: a SATA enclosure would convert the hard drive from sata to usb in the caddy?
  142. <camerongray> guest_65: Yeah, they usually have a controller that does that
  143. <camerongray> Also get ones that do USB 3.0 and ESATA
  144. <guest_65> camerongray: could you maybe find a cheap one that is able to do USB 3.0 and SATA for a 3.5?
  145. <camerongray> Just look on amazon, something like "USB 3.0 SATA Enclosure 3.5"
  146. <lostcoast> or just buy an adapter cable
  147. <camerongray> True, depends if you want it to be external forever of just a few times
  148. <camerongray> or*
  149. <guitar_man> camerongray: he is staff as in he is DA
  150. <camerongray> guitar_man: So what? Why should staff have access to my personal info like that!
  151. <guest_65> camerongray: i've given my desktop to my brother, im keeping the hard drive but want it as an external for my laptop :)
  152. <camerongray> guest_65: Ahh, i'd get the enclosure then, keeps it safet
  153. <camerongray> safer*
  154. <camerongray> I don't normally get mad, but that has made me furious!
  155. <camerongray> IndianaJoe/guitar_man: What other info does their software give, can you get my BIOSAgentPlus report too?
  156. <-- IndianaJoe ([email protected]) has quit (Ping timeout)
  157. <guitar_man> I dunno I have never bothered to look , I just give affiliate passes , I let the user do thier own thing , I just support them if needed
  158. <guest_65> camerongray: would this be the kind of enclosure i should be looking at? http://www.amazon.co.uk/IT735U3-SATA-External-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B004LO59MK
  159. <camerongray> Yeah, that looks fine
  160. <camerongray> But what that's just shown is those users are clearly having their privacy violated
  161. <camerongray> Look at most software "Do you want to send an error report? Click here to see the info this contains, no personally identifiable info is collected" - Nothing like that from DriverAgent
  162. <camerongray> I expected DriverAgent to be bad, but that's not bad, that's dreadful!
  163. <guitar_man> in the 8 or 9 years i have been associated with DA , and as far as I know , the only info we use is the driver combo's of the machines,
  164. <camerongray> But the fact is that it sent that info out without my explicit consent
  165. <camerongray> And why would it even need that info?
  166. <-- Rushmore ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  167. <camerongray> And if that info is collected, why should "staff" give it out?
  168. --> IndianaJoe ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  169. <camerongray> IndianaJoe: So what other info is made available by DriverAgent?
  170. <camerongray> You know, just taken from my machine and put online without my explcit consent?
  171. <camerongray> My BIOS report too, I imagine that's taken
  172. <IndianaJoe> yes
  173. <camerongray> Oh goody
  174. <-- guest_15 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  175. <camerongray> Where was the message saying it would send it out?
  176. <IndianaJoe> but none of it is published
  177. <guitar_man> put online is a knee gerk
  178. <camerongray> But you could access it?
  179. <camerongray> No policies or restrictions against it?
  180. <IndianaJoe> information is used by tech support - you may have problems
  181. <camerongray> In that case I should be clearly asked if I want it sent out
  182. <camerongray> For example, my hostname, why is that there?
  183. <camerongray> Pretty sure my IP would be logged somewhere - It's not too hard to work out my pattern of hostnames from there
  184. <camerongray> The majority of my machines are accessible over the internet, being able to work out hostmasks of other machines is not good
  185. <IndianaJoe> your machine name - used by you if you have more than 1 machine linked to your account
  186. <camerongray> I didn't even use an account!
  187. <IndianaJoe> excellent
  188. <camerongray> I don't have an issue with data being collected in general, but no explicit consent?
  189. <camerongray> That's BAD
  190. <IndianaJoe> it's GOOD
  191. <camerongray> Explain why?
  192. <guest_65> how on earth is data being collected without consent a good thing?
  193. <camerongray> Why it's good for a piece of desktop software, to collect potentially personally identifiable information (Although a long shot but could be) without consent
  194. <camerongray> I wouldn't mind if it had said "Do you want to send this info to DriverAgent to help assist you if you need support"
  195. <camerongray> But nope, one click, BAM, sent
  196. <-- guest_65 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  197. <guitar_man> next click bam list of good bad drivers and download links
  198. <guitar_man> as well as any software updates
  199. <camerongray> And shared online
  200. <camerongray> It could have all been done in software
  201. <Aciebel> camerongray, FBI is now reading your results
  202. <Aciebel> They're on to you, run!
  203. <camerongray> lol
  204. <guitar_man> nope is not shared online ,
  205. <camerongray> Simply looked up what drivers I have, compared to its database, then told me what needs updated
  206. <camerongray> There is no need for it to be shared or stored anywhere
  207. <camerongray> Now, a "Share report" button would be very useful
  208. <camerongray> But it's not needed formost cases
  209. <Aciebel> inb4 share on Facebook and tell your friends which drivers need updated!
  210. <camerongray> lol!
  211. <-- cod ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: <censored> the world)
  212. <camerongray> And I'm not against data collection, remember what my job is? But something like a hostname could have been "CameronGrayPC" - BAM, personally identifiable
  213. <camerongray> We discuss this a lot at work, e.g. what's personally identifiable and what isn't - Something like a persons name is at the top of the list of "NO!"
  214. <Aciebel> is your computer's name on there?
  215. <camerongray> Yeah
  216. <camerongray> For me it's not personally identifiable "Tiree"
  217. <Aciebel> I'd question the fact of people knowing I called her Emma
  218. <camerongray> lol
  219. <Aciebel> simply because I think that's a nice name
  220. <camerongray> But from that people could work out the pattern of my other hostmasks fairly quickly
  221. <camerongray> And since most of my machines are exposed online based on hostmasks, that's not goodf
  222. <Azander> heh
  223. --> guest_28 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  224. <camerongray> And at work our machines are prefixed with the company's initials
  225. <-> guest_28 is now known as Aciebel2
  226. <camerongray> So from there you could find the company and BOOM, there's an address and phone number
  227. <guitar_man> if they could even be bothered , you are assuming they would , you are assuming they would , so wrong
  228. <Aciebel2> Yea I can figure that's also easier to get knowledge of the system being used
  229. <Azander> No.. that isn't it. I've done this argument before. It isn't that they won't, or would, it is that they CAN.
  230. <Azander> what is to stop some hacker from getting into their systems and stealing that information as well ?
  231. <Aciebel2> information can be so valuable
  232. -*- Azander has learned the HARD way :(
  233. <Aciebel2> how so?
  234. <guitar_man> can or could and do are assumptions on your part ,
  235. <Azander> some data was stolen by a hacker, they used it to get into servers I manage.
  236. <Azander> it was a nightmare for a while.
  237. <Azander> all because someone else was somewhat lax on security
  238. <guitar_man> well would be nice if an example of DA abusing the info was presented
  239. <camerongray> But the fact it's colllected is bad!
  240. <Azander> it was over a year ago, and I still keep watch for any signs of that information coming back to haunt me.
  241. <camerongray> And the fact a supposed staff member was so willing to (a) look up my data and (b) post it in a public IRC channel
  242. <Aciebel2> lol
  243. <Azander> I see camerongray on 127.0.0.5 :P
  244. <camerongray> lol
  245. <camerongray> I have access to data from massive websites, most people here have probably used them - BUt I don't go around posting info that has been collected!
  246. <camerongray> There are rules around what the data can be used for and where it must be stored, pertty sure posting in an IRC channel is against them
  247. <Hopebot> Chat rules: English only, no profanity, no discrimination, no discussions on politics/religion, no spam or flooding the channel, no advertisement or other website URLs unless addressing another users question, and no assistance with hacking, cracking, creating viruses, illegal torrents, bypassing copyright laws.
  248. <camerongray> Yet, this software is happily recommended here as a "solution"
  249. <camerongray> All it has done is collect info without consent, then try to scare me into paying $30 to fix a laptop that's not even worth that and works fine as it is
  250. <guitar_man> scare you?
  251. <camerongray> Apparantly 57% of my drivers are out of date and this will clearly cause all manner of issues with my machine
  252. <camerongray> Despite this machine running all the latest drivers from HP
  253. <camerongray> OH SNAP!
  254. <camerongray> Did you see the claim at startup?
  255. <camerongray> 10% Faster Internet Speed?
  256. <guitar_man> nope , not , it tells you that better , newer drivers etc are available
  257. <Aciebel2> WOW
  258. <Aciebel2> must have!
  259. <camerongray> So, lets see that
  260. <camerongray> Do you have a free account to test that claim with?
  261. --> guest_59 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  262. <Aciebel2> I believe indianajoe had one
  263. <camerongray> So, before DriverAgent I get 8ms ping, 69.91mbps down and 9.88mbps up
  264. <guitar_man> and i have not seen the 10% bit , must have a look , but forinstance an older driver could cause a bottle neck that slows the ability to say d/l , correcting that potentially could open the path to the ability to d/l faster
  265. <camerongray> That's useful since it clearly shows the laptop cannot reach my full connection speed which is 100mbps
  266. <camerongray> So lets see if DriverAgent can fix that!
  267. <Aciebel2> I'm a believer
  268. <camerongray> lol
  269. <guest_59> Hello, I have a problem with my old pc(amd 1200mhz processor 900mb ram(year 2000)) we installed windows xp on it 2 years ago and now I went on it and it had constant problem and programs shutting down. I want to install mubuntu on it but i'm afraid the errors came from hardware is there a way to check my hardware?
  270. <guest_59> Like maybe my harddrive is broken or idk
  271. <guitar_man> you ever replaced the bios battery on the laptop guest_50?
  272. <guitar_man> ooops guest_59
  273. <guest_59> it's not a laptop it's a desktop
  274. <guitar_man> ok then you ever replaced it's bios battery?
  275. <guest_59> I have not replaced anything but my RAM
  276. <guest_59> other than my RAM*
  277. <guitar_man> then I suggest first off replace that battery
  278. <guitar_man> system and program crashes are often caused by the battery not maintaining bios
  279. <guest_59> ok I'll try that, just open my pc and replace the battery from my motherboard right?(i'm not a pro at this)
  280. <guitar_man> shut down , unplug mains , press main power button to drain excess current , replace battery , power on ,boot to bios , reset date etc ,
  281. <guest_59> ah ok, thank
  282. <guest_59> thanks*
  283. <guitar_man> welcomed
  284. <lostcoast> not one mention of an actual error code or anything
  285. <camerongray> So first thing I notice with DriverAgent, it's given me some Dell branded drivers
  286. <guitar_man> it should offer two d/l options
  287. <camerongray> Doesn't seem to
  288. <guitar_man> manu's and DA's
  289. <guitar_man> DA's tend to be suites as opposed to just the driver

  299. <LogicGuy> Camerongray, I'm on vista as well. :l
  300. <guitar_man> guest_30 it does not show in device manager?
  301. <guitar_man> nah never liked Vista full stop
  302. <LogicGuy> I like it
  303. <camerongray> Oh, I don't use Vista normally :P - Just using my old "testing" laptop to prove a point
  304. <LogicGuy> It's way better than a mac.
  305. <guest_30> No. The connection from my DVD drive was a PATA cable into the IDE or PCI slot. I only have one of them so I used a connector to change it to a SATA connection.
  306. <camerongray> I normally use 7/8 for Windows but I'm mostly on Linux
  307. <LogicGuy> Brb, gonna take a bathroom break.
  308. <guest_30> needed to free up that slot for a PATA drive I had.
  309. <camerongray> Vista isn't as bad as people make out, but it is very resource hungry

  362. <guest_10> I'm here to ask your opinon: Should I keep my Vostro 1510 Dell Laptop, or upgrade to a desktop?
  363. <guest_10> I'm serious right now
  364. <guest_19> Are you happy with the laptop?
  365. <guest_10> Sorry about the trolling.
  366. <guest_10> Yeah
  367. <camerongray> Well, you've lost your credibility!
  368. <guest_10> Had it for about 4 years
  369. <guest_19> Why would you consider an upgrade if you're happy with it?
  370. <guest_10> Running it on vista, but it's been giving me troubles
  371. <guest_19> Well, I think computers generally have a life of 4-5 years.
  372. <guest_10> My files like say "notepad.exe is corrupted, run chkdsk utility"
  373. <guest_19> Personally, in my experience, desktops have always been far more reliable than laptops I've owned.
  374. <guest_10> I do, but it doesnt run the chkdsk
  375. <guest_10> And my files work fine
  376. <guest_10> It's a bit wonky
  377. <guest_19> Question--if I have to purchase a new motherboard, do I need a new install of windows?
  378. <camerongray> guitar_man/IndianaJoe: So, drumroll... Is it 10% faster? Before - Ping: 8ms, 69.91mbps down and 9.88mbps up - After Ping: 7ms, 66.72mbps down and 9.87mbps up... So... DriverAgent making fake claims then?
  379. <guest_19> Nope.
  380. <camerongray> Also note this connection gets around 103mbps down on a better machine so the machine isn't even maxing out my cable connection before or after the scan!
