  1. This guide will cover the following topics:
  2.
  3. -Nuclear war
  4. -Anarchy, riot
  5. -Vulcanoe eruption
  6. -Earthquakes
  7. -Conventional war
  8. -Hurricane
  9. -Flood
  10. -Alien invasion
  11. -Meteor impact
  12. -Surviving in a lawless "society"
  13. -Surviving in rural areas
  14. -Bugout bag advise
  15. -The aftermath/restarting civilization/living in a pre-industrial civilization
  16.
  17. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  18.
  19. Nuclear War:
  20.
  21. -When you know that trouble is underway, leave big cities!
  22. -Try to obtain a hand-cranked emergency radio and put it in a faraday cage before the detonation
  23.
  24. In the even of a nuclear detonation:
  25.
  26. Basics:
  27.
  28. -Avoid blast
  29. -Avoid heat
  30. -Avoid radiation
  31.
  32. First few minutes:
  33.
  34. -Head for cover
  35. -Start counting
  36. -Do not look towards the blast
  37. -Head for basement
  38. -Stay away from glass
  39. -Wait until you hear the bang, then wait another minute for the blastwave to pass over
  40.
  41. -A microwave can be used as a faraday cage and protects valuable electronic devices from the following electro-magnetic pulse
  42. -Close and lock all of your doors/windows
  43. -Check to see if your car starts
  44. -Try to stay away from open areas
  45. -If you are 30 miles from ground zero, while the wind blows at 10 miles/hour you have estimately 3 hours before fallout arrives, if the bomb is 20 kt large, at 25MT bomb, your time is cut down to 30 minutes
  46. -Pay attention to windspeed and direction
  47. -Avoid interstates/highways/main roads when fleeing
  48.
  49. !-You must stay inside about 7 days if you are in an affected area untill leaving the shelter-!
  50.
  51. --Cover all your supplies with plastic sheeting, seal the doors and windows with duct tape if you decide to stay--
  52.
  53. Rule of Threes:
  54.
  55. You cannot survive-
  56. >three minutes without air
  57. >three hours without shelter
  58. >three days without water
  59. >three weeks without food
  60.
  61. -Prepare to have half a gallon of clean, unradiated water per day per person for 10 days (or more)
  62. -All food in sealed containers is safe
  63. -Try to use different clothing for outdoors and for indoors (rubber clothing would be best suited for outdoors)
  64. -Cover all items with plastic to avoid contamination
  65. -Avoid contact with radiated objects (that includes vegetation)
  66.
  67. How to tell the approx. yield of the blast:
  68. The yield can be determined by the duration of the 'Intense Flash'
  69.
  70. 1-3 Sec = 20KT or less
  71. 3-7 Sec = 20KT to 125KT
  72. 7-10 Sec = 125KT to 250KT
  73. 10-20 Sec = 250KT to 1MT
  74. 30 Sec = 2MT
  75. 45 Sec = 25MT
  76.
  77. Origins of bombs:
  78.
  79. <20KT = Terrorist, N. Korea, Iran, Rouge state
  80. 125 to ~300KT = Russian SLBM or ICBM
  81. 3-5MT Chinese SLBM or ICBM
  82. 20+ MT = Possible russian or Probable Chinese
  83.
  84. How to tell the distance to the nuclear blast:
  85. Note the time between the flash and the bang
  86.
  87. 24 Sec = 5 Miles / 8 km
  88. 47 Sec = 10 miles / 16 km
  89. 71 Sec = 15 miles / 24 km
  90. 95 Sec = 20 miles / 32 km
  91. 119 Sec = 25 miles / 40 km
  92. 142 Sec = 30 miles / 48 km
  93. 166 Sec = 35 miles / 56 km
  94. 190 Sec = 40 miles / 64 km
  95.
  96. -Most nuclear blasts can be heard over 100 miles away
  97. -The larger the bomb, the less time the bang needs to travel (5-10 seconds variety)
  98. -If a bomb is detonating above ground level, there is incredibly less fallout, if it is detonated on the ground, the dust it raises is contaminated and being carried away by wind
  99.
  100. How to know if a bomb was an airburst or a ground-detonation:
  101.
  102. Look at the mushroom cloud. Notice the stem, if it's lighter than the cloud, or even broken, it was most likely an airburst.
  103. If the head of the cloud is very dark and the stem is very thick, it was a surface-burst.
  104.
  105. Types of Radiation:
  106.
  107. Alpha
  108. -Stopped by a sheet of paper
  109. -Only dangerous if inhaled or ingested
  110.
  111. Beta
  112. -Stopped by clothing
  113. -Dangerous if inhaled or ingested
  114. -Can burn skin
  115.
  116. Gamma
  117. -Highly penetrating
  118.
  119. -Radiation will be reduced by 1/10th at every 7 hour interval
  120. -Each .4" layer of lead will decrease the radiation by a half
  121.
  122. Halving Thicknesses of different materials:
  123.
  124. Lead: .4"
  125. Steel: 1"
  126. Concrete: 2.4"
  127. Dirt: 3.6"
  128. Water: 7.2"
  129. Wood: 11"
  130. Air: 6000"
  131.
  132. -The more shielding you have, the less radiation you will receive
  133. -Gamma rays allways moves in straight lines, so make your entrance at a 90° angle to the outside
  134.
  135. Signs and symptoms of radiation sickness:
  136.
  137. Mild exposure (1-2 Gy):
  138.
  139. Nausea and vomiting within 6 hours
  140. Weakness, fatigue within 4 weeks

  173.
  174. -To avoid a beta radiation infection and damage to the thyroid by Iodine 131, get Potassium Iodite (KI); 1 Tablet (130 mg) per day for an adult, 1/2 tablet per day for people under 18/under 150lbs, 1/4 tablet for infants dissolved in milk/water
  175. -The half-life of iodine 131 is 8 days
  176. -Try to ingest the potassium iodite before being exposed to radiation
  177.
  178. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  179.
  180. General Bugout Bag advise:
  181.
