  1. [0x01 What is DDoS?]
  2.
  3. Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) is a form of attack in which one or
  4. more machines disrupt a traget by exhausting it's network resources.
  5. Now that being said, DDoS is just how you can brawl online.
  6.
  7. [0x02 OMG i just go DDoS'd why?]
  8.
  9. One of the major reason you might get DDoS'd in irc is because you were
  10. either talking shit, or you just pissed off the wrong person.
  11. If you got DDoS'd right in a middle of an argument with someone on irc
  12. chances are, that person is hitting you. The best course of action is
  13. to wait until the attack stops.
  14.
  15. [0x03 I have more IPs i can use]
  16.
  17. Don't, coming from more IPs is just gonna get those DDoS'd too, just count
  18. your loses and ride it of. If you insists on coming back from different IPs
  19. that is just gonna make the global enviroment of the attack worst.
  20.
  21. [0x04 I have the logs i will turn them in to the proper authorities]
  22.
  23. OK, here i am gonna explain a little concept, most and i mean 98% of
  24. DDoS attacks fall under the cracks of investigation. Allow me to elaborate
  25. You have the logs, maybe even tcdumps, good proof you got hit. Now let
  26. me put in prospective, let's say they hit your home connection. Your ISP
  27. will be able to trace to the upstream router, maybe all the way to the IXP
  28. (Internet Exchange Point) which in turn will cost you a lot of money. After
  29. that when your ISP has to deal with another ISP to be able to continue to
  30. trace the source of the attack (unless you are paying a handsome amount of money)
  31. they will most likely drop the investigation.
  32. Now they probably dropped it long before that, since let's face it, residential
  33. isn't really that important to them.
  34. If the DDoS'd attack continues for a long time there is 1 thing that is going to happen
  35. since your ISP is not gonna spend it's own money to trace the attack and knowing
  36. you are the cause of it, they are most likely going to drop you as a client
  37. because knocking down the upstream router will affecting other clients.
  38. Hence the "ride it of" advice.
  39.
  40. [0x05 They DDoS'd my VPS not my home connection]
  41.
  42. In this case, well you are fucked, you are gonna drop, if the attacker is malicious
  43. enough, they can continue to drop you until your VPS provider drops you as a client.
  44. In this case, the tracing and reporting is even less likely, VPS providers care
  45. about making money and having 10-15 clients affected because of a single one is not ok
  46. A bit of advice, after your VPS gets null routed 3 times, start looking for a new
  47. VPS provider.
  48.
  49. [0x06 What about DDoS mitigation services]
  50.
  51. DDoS mitigation services are a legend, if someone want to drop you chances are you
  52. are going to get dropped.
  53. Now if you have enough money you could buy enough network resources to withstand the
  54. attack.
  55.
  56. [0x07 What can i do to avoid DDoS]
  57.
  58. In irc terms, stay away from EFNET.
